Stayed
overnight
in
a
psychiatric
ward
voluntarily
some
years
ago,
but
they
checked
me
out
at
8am
the
next
morning
even
though
i
was
not
coping
well.
The
nurse
tried
to
give
me
one
of
my
pills
and
I
threw
up
so
she
took
it
away
and
said,
"Oh
well
if
you're
vomiting
I
won't
give
you
your
pill
then!";
a
man
came
with
breakfast
then
I
got
told
in
one
of
those
uppity
tones
to
by
that
same
nurse
before,
"Get
moving
now".
I
asked
if
I
had
another
attack
at
home
if
I
could
come
back
and
the
nurse
said,
"Well
you
could
but
we
don't
really
do
that;
we
don't
encourage
helplessness".
Was
told
by
doctors
there
my
sickness
was
"'not
organic
so
must
be
psychological".
Well
it
wasn't.
I
was
diagnosed
with
damage
to
my
left
labyrinth
by
a
ear/balance
specialist
at
the
St
Vincents
Hospital
which
i
would
highly
recommend
the
'Hearing
&
Balance
Centre'.
When
I
stayed
at
the
USpace
mental
health
clinic
I
was
refused
my
Ventolin
puffer
and
was
always
last
on
the
doctors'
list
because
they
believed
and
arrogantly
told
me
everything
was
all
in
my
head
and
it
was
anxiety.
I
kept
telling
the
staff
and
doctor
that
it
was
hard
to
breathe
but
they
palmed
me
off.
Staff
would
sit
down
with
me
when
i
was
feeling
particularly
bad
and
tell
me,
"Have
you
ever
thought
of
getting
a
puppy?
you
just
need
to
get
a
puppy"
(when
I
get
home,
to
calm
me
down).
When
I
got
home
and
went
to
the
doctor,
x-rays
showed
I
had
a
lung
infection.
So
all
that
time
I
was
walking
around
with
a
lung
infection
while
they
were
telling
me
it
was
all
anxiety
and
in
my
head.
Another
time
I
sought
help
from
a
doctor
at
St
Vincents
for
mental
health
and
was
told
to
'just
go
and
do
volunteer
work,
do
cleaning
for
the
elderly,
you
don't
need
to
come
here'.
I
would
never
go
to
St
Vincents
Darlinghurst
for
mental
health
treatment
ever
again.
However
this
hospital
did
save
a
family
member's
life
when
she
had
heart
problems
otherwise
she
would
not
be
alive
today,
and
have
been
very
helpful
to
other
family
members'
physical
problems,
so
I
would
say
in
a
physical
emergency
they
would
be
just
as
good
as
other
hospitals
and
are
useful
for
that.
Mental
health
wise?
with
rude
and
arrogant
staff
and
psychiatrists,
getting
help
or
getting
better
you're
much
better
off
going
to
the
Prince
Of
Wales
hospital
who
actually
seem
to
not
treat
patients
like
a
burden
and
take
the
time
to
listen
and
care.
