As
a
first
time
mother
I
had
such
an
awful
experience
at
the
Mater
from:
1.
Entering
the
birthing
suites
-
where
the
staff
were
jaded
and
rude
towards
husbands
and
partners
(literally
throwing
compression
socks
at
my
husband
saying
‘be
useful’).
2.
Rudeness
towards
men
-
the
midwives
would
make
snarky
comments
to
my
husband
and
other
husbands
saying
they
are
all
unhelpful
and
lazy.
One
night,
when
asking
a
mid-wife
to
assist
me,
the
mid-wife
said
‘why
is
hubby
sleeping?
He
should
be
helping.
I
bet
he
can
hear
me
and
is
pretending
to
sleep’
.
2.
Unhelpful
and
Unavailable
midwives
-
when
pressing
the
button
for
assistance
-
no
one
would
attend
the
room
for
an
hour
at
least
on
every
occasion.
We
observed
the
midwives
were
going
around
admitting
and
discharging
patients,
but
not
actually
providing
or
focusing
on
midwifery.
This
was
very
upsetting
for
me
as
a
first
time
mother.
my
husband
and
I
felt
we
were
just
left
in
a
room
to
figure
it
out
for
ourselves
despite
paying
to
be
in
a
private
hospital;
where
there
should
be
assistance
and
resources.
Also
I
asked
to
feed
my
baby
formula
as
I
was
worried
about
my
supply.
I
decided
myself
to
combine
feed
until
my
supply
came
through.
The
mid-wife
became
very
hostile
telling
me
they
do
not
encourage
this.
She
left
the
room
and
then
returned
throwing
the
formula
and
a
consent
form
onto
my
bedside
table.
When
asking
what
I
should
do,
she
said
‘it’s
on
the
form’.
I
had
to
read
to
confirm
the
formula
quantity
and
frequency
as
the
staff
were
not
being
helpful.
Also
as
I
was
combine
feeding
I
asked
to
see
the
lactation
consultant
(another
service
allegedly
provided
by
the
Mater).
The
midwife
told
me
the
consultant
will
see
me
when
she
has
time.
in
the
meantime,
she
spoke
with
the
consultant
herself
and
was
told
everything
I’m
doing
is
fine.
I
never
spoke
to
or
saw
the
consultant
once
during
my
admission.
3.
Politics
amongst
staff
members
-
when
we
received
any
advice
from
a
midwife
on
breastfeeding/swaddling,
another
midwife
would
later
see
what
we
were
doing
and
ask
‘who
taught
you
that?’
and
then
told
us
not
to
follow
that
advice.
4.
Confusion
with
classes
-
we
wanted
to
bathe
our
newborn
and
attended
the
room
where
the
bathing
class
was
to
take
place.
When
arriving,
on
two
seperate
occasions,
we
were
informed
the
class
was
cancelled
as
the
mothercraft
was
not
available
due
to
COVID.
A
mid-wife
said
she
would
assist
with
a
one-on-one
bath
and
to
buzz
her
when
we
were
ready
in
our
room.
When
buzzing
the
mid-wife,
a
lady
attended
the
room
after
some
time,
angrily
informing
us
she’s
the
mother
craft.
She
told
us
to
call
the
appropriate
number
to
book
the
bath
(strange
as
there
was
a
designated
class
time
which
didn’t
go
ahead
twice),
further
delaying
bubs
first
bath.
5.
Cleaners
-
the
cleaners
came
on
only
2
occasions
during
our
stay.
Bins
were
overflowing
with
dirty
diapers
etc.
when
asking
staff
to
call
the
cleaners,
nothing
was
done
about
the
issue.
6.
Expensive
Parking
-
unlike
other
hospitals,
there
was
no
daily
rate
or
set
fee
for
parking
during
a
patients
admission.
The
parking
was
ridiculously
expensive
(over
$400!).
We
had
such
an
awful
experience
as
first
time
parents
that
we
asked
to
leave
a
day
early.
I
would
not
recommend
the
Mater
as
none
of
the
services
you
would
expect
were
provided
during
our
admission.
other
couples
appeared
to
have
the
same
experience
abs
just
wanted
to
get
out
of
there.
