Randomly walked in here when the trains at Newtown were cancelled to kill some time. Wow. What an amazing experience. Arcade games from back in the day and some really awesome pin ball machines. The pin ball machines even have drink holders on them so you can rest your beer while racking up the points. What a great time. Highly recommended for some beers and fun.

This bar has an amazing vibe and appeals to all ages. The selection of games was very well thoughtout, they had all the names that would come to mind even if you weren't born in the 80s. It's quite big as well, there are several rooms on both floors full of machines. The staff are friendly, the deal is that you buy a beer along with some coins. Each game is $1. They even have a Mega drive with Sonic the Hedgehog at one of the tables. My only suggestion would be about having some more convenient places to put your beer while playing the games. That said many people just hang out at the tables around the bright lights and sound of the machines . Had a really amazing time. It's a great place to take your friends to see something totally different, definitely recommended.

Amazing place, and fantastic game themed cocktails. Bring along your dollar coins for the arcade machines or chill with friends with the plethora of board games provided. Fun retro atmosphere feels more like a friends house party in their garage, googly recommended experience. Bookings are essential for groups.

This bar was amazing. They had a good selection of craft beers either in bottle or on tap, almost made cocktails. Then the games. This is so amazing. Nothing goes better to together than gaming and drinks. They have old school arcades, consoles, board or cards games. Pizza is provided by a shop a couple of doors down and is delicious. Highly recommended.

No place like this in the City! Friendly staff, come with friends, have a drink of your choice and chat in an 80's themed bar! Two floors of Retro Arcade games and Pinballs to play, or pick-up a board game like Risk and beat your mate. Has a menu, but they also are cool with ordering Pizza from next door and bringing it in. Definitely coming back to this bar.

Went here last night (Thurs 9th Nov) with a few mates from work. Had a blast. Bloke behind the bar (Matt?) was super helpful. He helped us with our tab, dishing out beers, coins, and good chat super quick. A great effort from him considering the place was busy and was just him behind the bar. Great vibe. Will be back.

A very friendly and welcoming place. Wide selection of 80s and 90s arcade machines spread over two floors. Good selection of beers and spirits. Bar staff and patrons are friendly and are always up for a chat and to share their knowledge/skills on the retro video games. Iโ€™m not local to the area, but to me itโ€™s worth the 30 minute journey there. Basically, I think there are two ways to think of this place: either an arcade where you can enjoy a couple of beers; or a bar where you can have the occasional bout on Street Fighter II. Either way, itโ€™s a great place.

How fun is this?! 1989 is an arcade bar in Newtown, located on the Main Street. Itโ€™s got cocktails from your fave zooper doopers, all the way to cocopopsโ€ฆ!! With 37 arcade games including pinball, street fighter and Tetris. What we ordered! * Boozey cocopops ๐Ÿฅฃ * Boozey Zooper dooper ๐ŸงŠ We had an amazing night out! Highly recommend if youโ€™re looking to elevate your next games night to a whole new level ๐ŸŽฎ

Have always loved 1989 for casual nights out with friends, but most recently hosted a work function where we hired the whole venue and it was a roaring success. Cannot speak highly enough of how straight forward and easy it was to arrange the event, including upfront pricing with no hidden extras. Ben at 1989 was also so accommodating when it came to specific needs for our group, covid postponements and all the rest and on the night the staff were fantastic. If you're looking for a party venue, 1989 is a great option!

If your an old school gamer, this bar has plenty to keep you entertained. If pinball and arcade machines are not your style, there are loads of board games and even a selection of n64 games to play for free. The beer is not bad either.

Outstanding place! My only regret is that it took me so long to come here. Great games, good choice of drinks, and a great happy hour! Great options for what to play, lots of retro vibes.

Got there little after 8.30pm on a Friday night - surprisingly wasn't too crowded. Arcade Machines didn't have lines, so didn't have to wait to play the games we wanted to try. Make sure to bring $1 coins as that's how you operate to play the machines, otherwise you can easily exchange at the bar. There wasn't much hot food on the menu, so the staff were kind enough to let us bring pizza from next door to eat!! I'll definitely be back to try out the board games and spend more time trying to beat the high scores to some of my favourite arcade machines.

Fantastic place to check out. We went on the club day where we could play everything for $20 (besides pinball machines) and it was so fun. Played a heap of point blank and Galaga. Great time.

The cocktails here are amazing. They have a great range of arcade games, old school pinball machines and board games. Good music. Great atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.

Great venue. Can be a little warm in the summer. They have a decent selection of drinks and games. All the games are free, so that makes this place fantastic. The upstairs has a few golden oldies, Definitely visit with a bunch of friends.

Good beer selection and prices. Very nostalgic vibe and cool games. It's possible to just get coins paying by card at the bar and play as much or as little as you'd like.

This place would have been good if there was only the nice bartender on. One of them ruined it for the place. Not sure of his name, but one of the bartenders had an attitude like i have never seen before. At the end of the day, if you donโ€™t like your job, please quit and go somewhere else where you donโ€™t have to interact with people. My friends and I all had the same experience, the guy rolled his eyes at us while we were ordering our drinks and made unnecessary comments under his breath which included swearing. This is unacceptable behaviour, especially when the card machine is being thrown at you. The other bartender actually apologised to me about his behaviour, and knowing that this is probably a regular thing. I would recommend having a chat to your staff, and pulling them into line. So disappointing.

One of my favourite bars in Sydney. The beers are on point as are the games. Great staff and events. All in on the theme and itโ€™s done really well. Canโ€™t recommend highly enough.

Awesome place, awesome vibe, chill staff. I don't even drink, but there's plenty to do with all the arcades there. You can do it will jamming out to your favourite 80s and 90s songs.

It's a really awesome bar, such a great experience. Great atmosphere and great drinks. Just wish the front desk had some more coins for us to change.

THIS BAR WAS SO COOL! I love it so much!!! You can have drinks and then play video gamesโ€ฆ. super chill and relaxed!!! Also the staff were pretty nice! One of them recommended us one drop lemonade which was very good :) Iโ€™ll definitely come back soon!!!

This place rocks. Bar staff are dope, games are sick and the vibe is on point. Be aware though, there may be uni students studying science that really try and steal your girl. Don't be disheartened by this though, they're uni students. They have as much game as a centennial park quidditch team. Instead, play Goldeneye Co-op and prove your dominance.

Super cool vibe with all the classic must have machines on top of some new pinball spins. Staff were awesome and friendly and cocktails not too bad either. Dropped in on an unexpected gem of a comedy night on Wednesdays too which was awesome also.

Really sad to give this a one star rating. The machines and games were a lot of fun and the vibe is great but the overall experience was tainted by the incredibly rude staff. Never felt such appalling service in Newtown. A group of us came by to celebrate a birthday and one staff member in particular treated us very poorly and with a negative attitude the entire night. There was no warmth or real care for any of the customers. A real shame that this used to be one of my favourites.

Such a cool bar and vibe! Games are great and takes you back in time. Drinks are great too! Will definitely be coming back and recommend to all :)

Cool vibe, but really poor service. Ordered drinks for our group with a bowl of chips. When we asked one of the staff about our bowl of chips he replied โ€œis there something you expect me to do about it?โ€ Given we had brought a group of friends from overseas to the bar, itโ€™s really disappointing that they had this kind of experience.

This bar has a really cool vibe and I love the old school arcade games here but the experience was tainted by rude staff and bad service. I ordered six cocktails at the bar which seemed like a massive burden and we also copped attitude from the guy that brought out our food. Haven't been to many places that have made me feel this unwelcome so I personally won't be back.
