Excellent venue on a rainy day! Wonderful exhibits of Alick Tipoti's art and stories of immigrants. Quite an amazing experience to explore the ships outside. Don't be shy to ask volunteers about history of each ship, they're happy to share their knowledge and fun facts.. Museum has a lot to offer, and I can't wait to visit again soon.

A great museum that I have taken my kids to a number of times over the years. Has awesome number of ships you can get on and explore. There’s a few old time large sail ships, a modern(ish) naval destroyer and even a submarine you can board too. The actual inside of the museum shows the history of Australian maritime over the years. There are plenty of staff around to help and to inform. It is a great day out with kids, young and old!

I visited the Maritime Museum with general admission, which limited me to the free areas, but I must say it was a delightful experience. The museum was not only informative but also a lot of fun. A highlight of our visit was meeting David, the model maker, who was truly excellent. He went out of his way to explain many things to the kids and was friendly throughout. David's engaging explanations kept both kids and adults entertained, making our visit truly enjoyable. We had a great time exploring the museum!

Excellent museum! Excellent! A real battle ship, submarine and some special ships are waiting for us to visit. We can even go into the ship to know more about the operation, daily life of sailor and much more! Besides, the volunteers are very nice and rich in knowledge. Even my wife who doesn't like war and battle ship finally gave very positive comment. Come enjoy here!

I served aboard the Attack Class Patrol Boat, HMAS Advance. Having suffered from PTSD in relation to an incident on this Ship, it was my therepy to go there to provide photos that this Museum didn't have, from the early 80's. Advance was normally closed but the lovely curator, who has lovingly looked after "my ship, tok us for a tour and I was able to take a photo of tge same position as my old one!

The Maritime Museum at Sydney's Darling Harbor is truly impressive. Exhibits are beautifully curated, and the chance to explore boats and even a submarine is unique. Whether with kids or a partner, it promises a memorable outing. A must-visit for history and sea enthusiasts alike.

The outdoor displays of real military marine vessels makes this museum stand out. The ships appear to be in great condition and there is knowledge staff onboard each vessel to offer visitors information and answer questions you may have. I also liked looking at related marine exhibits inside. While I was there, there was a marine photography display and it had some amazing National Geographic level photos. Just amazing. I only wish I could take a photo as good as they have. Plan to spend at least one hour here. Note if you are tall or suffer from confined spaces then going into the submarine may not be such a good idea. It is cramped inside and if you are taller than 5 ft 6 then you will likely hit your head on something. If you like my reviews, photos or videos then climb on board and batten down the like hatch and sail off for a great voyage.

If you come to Sydney, this is definitely one of the places to look for. Lots of history inside it and the experience in the submarine was unique. One lady that asks for the yellow cards before entering the submarine was rude to me because I had it in my pocket but that won't make me change my overall experience.

A great maritime museum with a range of vessels to board and explore including a replica of the Captain Cook's endeavour, and a submarine. Lots of interesting information and volunteers available to share additional info, like how to evacuate a sub. The museum also has an impressive indoor display to keep most people interested. My photos show some of the fantastic artworks. I also went to see the annual wildlife photography display as it is always impressive.

Fantastic museum, loved the fact they all volunteers here are ex sea fares and go through all the details explaining everything. The sail ship which is still sea worthy was just amazing. The museum too was amazing... All marine/maritime facts. Plus the photo exhibition.. must go if you love ships

My travel friend is ex navy so had to visit. We toured all ships berthed at the museum, which was very interesting. The displays in the museum were very informative also. You need to allow 2-3 hours to tour.

Such a great experience to explore the ships from inside! Kids loved it very much😍 My personal favourite is underwater ship, the real ship that was in use and it has so many interesting things to see. Good amenities for visiting with young kids. Must visit place!

I would like to thank the kind, responsible and professional staffs here. When my mobile phone unfortunately and desperately fell into a small bottomless gap in the submarine, they tried to get beneath the dusty deck and miraculously found it. They are heroes. The ship exhibitions here are indeed amazing, but keep your phone in your pocket, especially in the submarine!

It was definitely worth the visit to this museum, I especially loved the photography Exhibition as I am a huge photography buff. The ships were wonderful also. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go into the submarine as I found it a bit too constricting but would very much recommend for the more versatile. Enjoyed going onto the HMS Vampire though. The exhibits in the main museum was fantastic. A must see for Sydney locals and tourists alike.

We had an extraordinary experience there. The day that we visited the museum was a public holiday and we had been waiting 30 min to get to the submarine. It was worthy to wait that long queue. Staff and volunteers are friendly and they were passionate about their job. They knew all the stuff about the vessel that they were representing, if you want to know more just ask the crew.

A very good museum that tells story of the maritime history of Australia. Your admission price includes tours of historic ships and navy vessels. We enjoyed the exhibits so much that we stayed for 7 hours - we still didn’t have enough time spare to see some of the items. We’ll be back! We travelled to the museum via the light rail which stops across the road. After paying our entry of $35 each we received a stamp on our hand, and we were able to come & go as often as we liked. We ate lunch at the Darling Harbour shopping centre - you’ll find the door to the shopping centre located about 150 metres in front of the museum’s front door. Staff are great. Some staff are volunteers, and we found them very knowledgeable. There’s an excellent bookstore at the museum.

The price of admission is abhorrent for what you get. The entire exhibition can be seen at a leisurely pace in under half an hour. I've been to FREE museums that take twice as long to see most of it. Absolutely nothing was standout apart from the "sea monsters" exhibition which is a personal interest. But otherwise I'd say to maybe skip out on the maritime museum and find something else to do while in the area.

I only viewed the free galleries of the museum, and was very impressed. I spent about 3 hours reading and watching as much as I could and I probably only covered half of what was in the free galleries. Everything was very well laid out and clearly documented, so I learned a lot. I would love to go back and see everything else that time didn't allow me to see on my first visit.

Friendly and informative Staffs, last enter at 15:10 for the boats but the museum building close at 17:00. Avoid weekends and public holidays as there will be so many kids and waits

(Translated by Google) This partially open-air museum is located next to the 1899-old Pyrmont Bridge and opposite Madame Tussades Wax Museum. ✅It is very easy to find the Australian National Maritime Museum, when from the Pyrmont Bridge, you can see many ships, large and small boats anchored in the bay, such as warships, submarines, fishing boats ... origin in many countries, including the version of the boat used by British captain James Cook in his journey to find Australia. ✅However, an artifact on display on the bay has made us focus the most with the symbol "VN, KG, 1062A, ĐC". The boat originated from Vietnam, while the word KG was explained as Kien Giang. ✅ This boat belonged to Vietnamese immigrants in 1977, carrying 31 people, when it arrived on Darwin's coast in northern Australia, the boat stalled and was saved ashore. The Vietnamese family stayed in Australia, and in 1988 handed the boat over to the museum to display as a relic of Australia's immigration history. “✅Many Vietnamese tourists come to visit the museum and learn about this boat. The boat's owner is now dead. This boat is a part of the Vietnamese history and past in Australia and it is impossible to find a second boat like this here.

One of the must see places in the heart of Sydney CBD. Located in on of the most beautiful and pristine locations with amazing views of the Sydney Harbour. Exiting place for ocean and maritime lovers. Wealth of knowledge on modern Australian history. Lots of adventure for kids as well as adults having been able to go inside naval ship, submarine pirate ship and many more. Definitely recommend for anyone who visit Sydney.

Great museum for all ages. We attended their monthly "mini mariners " program aimed for children. Reasonably priced and the ladies who run it are knowledgeable and extremely enthusiastic which is so nice to see. Props to the lovely young short but energetic lady who really gets into character for Tim the turtle.

Just fantastic. The staff and especially the volunteers were all great. We had our 6 year old with us and he just loved going all over the ships and the boat. A special thanks to Bill the volunteer who showed us around the Sub. Really interesting. Value is just perfect. The inside museum was also well worth a walk around. We spent 5 hours all day and the time just shot past.

Brilliant! Better than expected, there are multiple levels with lots of information. The submarine is $8 extra to go on board but worthwhile as it is a guided tour. The ‘Map It’ area for kids is really fun and they enjoyed that part.

Great way to kill a few hours in Sydney CBD. $25 for an 'all access' adult ticket, which allowed you to board and explore all 4 ships and the exhibits. When I went, the wildlife photography exhibition was on, which is well worth a look. Plenty so see there. If you have a backpack, you have to check it into the cloakroom. There's information on maritime history across a few different cultures, which was great. Only wish I had more time there before I had to go to the airport.

Located on the Casino side of our beautiful Sydney Darling Harbour, I highly recommend a visit at this museum. The staff and volunteers are very kind, funny and knowledgeable. I came a bit too late (1 hour before the museum closed) but the kind staff put my name in the “Blue Book” so we can come back for free another time. Even with only 1 hour, I manage to see the submarine and destroyer and the Wildlife Photographer of the year exhibition. Love the on-going Photography exhibition and sculpture here. The highlight for me was seeing the submarine and the destroyer! I will definitely come back soon!

So cool to board a old sailing ship, submarine, and battleship!! The docents monitoring the ships inside are very knowledgeable and with the old sailing ships have been with the ships for over a decade - both ships still occasionally go on voyages. Allow for ample time to visit all the ships. The submarine has narrow corridors so it's somewhat single file through the ship, but you can explore the others at your leisure. It wasn't too crowded on the weekday afternoon that we went. Ask lots of questions!

A great place to spend a day with the family, or by yourself. It is jam packed with information and in fun ways it has been presented. I've been a few times, with years between my visits, and I always learn amazing facts. The staff are always ready to help and explain, and share their own interpretation. The location couldn't be better, easy to get there and move around the exhibits. There is a Cafe with lots of tasty treats. Something for everyone. The entry price is a bargain for what you receive.

The museum is nice with plenty of history in it, the Navy ship and Submarine are great for the kids to explore however more modern Naval ships would be nicer. The old Tall ships are great to explore too but the exhibits inside the museum leave a lot to be desired, there are very few if at all any interactive exhibits for kids and not much in the way of the Royal Australian Navy which is really disappointing considering its called the Australian National Maritime Museum when Australia has a deep naval history. There is barely anything on Captain Cook or the first fleet our history should be celebrated for how far we've come as a country and where we are going with new exhibits rotating every couple of years. Also the Cafe at the Australian National Maritime Museum is possibly THE WORST Cafe I have ever been to! I had the American cheese burger brought out to me and the bun was rock hard, the cheese was completely burnt and the salad was terrible, as were my chips which I barely received any either not even my kids ate their chips and the Cafe is very expensive!

There were enough things to experience for hours. However, it will be more interesting to people who care about the history and development of maritime technology. You are not going to see high-tech stuff from the navy nor the very old systems of Aboriginal people. Side note: There was a considerable wait time to see the submarine but the time spent in the submarine was very short.

  • 5/5 Anna L. 3 months ago on Google • 6 reviews New
Great for the boys (6 and 3yrs). Wait for the submarine was long so we skipped it - too hard to wait in line so long with little kids. But otherwise all good. Buy a ticket online to save the entry queue. We went during the Summer school holidays so water play area was great. So was the Octopus Garden fun darkened area inside - the boys had fun chasing light-show crabs in the game they had set up, and jumping on the mountain of pebble-looking floor cushions. They loved checking out the open ships.

Great place to take the kids, fun and educational. Our family spent a good few hours here, Sea Monsters section was awesome! Our booked session for the Wild Life Photography ran late so we were offered a free session to use for next time. Much appreciated and very thoughtful decision from management. We were also quite impressed at the various check points through out the museum. The staff here really make sure that they count ppl in and out so the max number of ppl won't be breached. We can see handsanitiser stations, everywhere,?? toilets and facilities are being regularly maintained too. Thank you to the all staff for doing such an amazing job! Keeping a high standard on hygiene and enforcing guidelines has made things a lot easier and safer for us customers to come in and show our support. We'll be back ?

Went to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition. Beautiful photos and really liked the new electronic display format instead of actual prints as in past years. Found the room layout a little cramped. For the size of images people standing looking at an image on one side would be blocking people trying to look at an image directly behind them. Maybe a consideration for future shows off this nature.

If you like old ships, or kinda modern warships this place is awesome! They have excellent exhibits for kids and adults. We went to the sea monsters show which paired well with the exhibit of the same name. But the highlight for me was without a doubt The Endeavor. (Translated by Google) It is a very interesting museum, with artwork outside and inside the museum. It has a part that you can visit for free, which is extensive and takes you a good time to visit. There is a part of the war and immigration: the fight to bring Japanese wives and their children to Australia by Australian soldiers. There are many stories about immigrants (who came by sea). Also, inside the museum is the sailing ship in which an Australian woman went around the world alone. It will take at least two days to see the entire museum. Honestly had a blast in the museum! Their collection was amazing! Everything from the early colonisation of Australia, to sea creatures of the past, to the history of the Royal Australian Navy! But their jewel in the crown has got to be their awesome collection of historical ships! The Destroyer and Submarine were fantastic to explore, and the tour guides were very knowledgeable in sharing their stories and experiences with us. Finally, the gift shop has so much cool toys/gifts/merch in it too! Totally worth the cost of entry, and 3 hours of my saturday!

Great to take kids as there's usually something new to see. It's not all boats and submarines and they often include stories as most ancestors arrived by sea and Australia's history is attached to sea. We got to see a massive Yacht formerly owned by Commonwealth Bank head in early 1900s. Beautiful boat that has been fully restored by the Museum boss.

This place is pretty amazing. I visited on 17 October 2020 when the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition was on and unfortunately due to COVID, the submarine and lower decks of the ships were closed. This did not stop me from thoroughly enjoying the museum. The staff are very friendly and there are lots of things that I did not know about our past (Did you know a sailor was allowed 4 gallons of beer as a daily allowance...). Walking on the HMAS Vampire reminded me of Pearl Harbour in Hawaii. I also enjoyed the illustrations on the walls outside the bathroom on the HMAS Vampire...

(Translated by Google) You can see the inside of the submarines and cruisers that were actually used. There are few opportunities like this, so I definitely want you to go there. It is designed with various wisdom so that you can live as comfortably as possible on the ship. It's a hotel except that it's closed and stuffy with a toilet, a shower, and a kitchen. By the way, journalists who saw Japanese cruisers are famous for saying that we were not making a battleship, but a hotelship, and we can certainly feel that it is a hotelship (laughs). Shame that they had to shut a few of the areas due to Gov. WHS practices e.g. the submarine and tours of the lower decks. Definitely can spend a whole day with the family here! Lovely views of the Sydney.

Superb exhibits at the moment, but is nearly always the case. Love the tactile features of the Sea Monsters exhibit. Also happy to see hand sanitiser on each touchable display. It was lovely and quiet, good for me, not so good for the museum. I could spend hours hear wandering the docks looking at the boats and other maritime history pieces.

  • 5/5 Fernando S. 3 years ago on Google
The museum is great, the exhibits are fascinating (if you're into the sea and everything above and below the water) the staff are warm and friendly. Even the poor guy looking after the young kids at the lab. The cafe however; was fantastic. Really good quality burger, fish and chips, and salad. Not sure why I was so surprised or why I expected something else. The food was not just great, but we'll priced for the quality as well. We will be back to visit the exhibits that were closed due to covid restrictions, and will definitely finish at the cafe! :-)

The structure of the exhibition is not very clear to me. However, good that parts of the exhibition is free, visiting the decks of some ships cost 25 AUD. Haven’t done that yet. Especially visiting the submarine must be great, but this is closed due to Covid restrictions.

ANMM is a must experience place of interest located in the world class Darling Harbour Sydney. The galleries full of maritime arts take you back in time of Australian Navies valour and sacrifices, the exploring voyages of humans and our respects towards mother ocean. The fashion design using sea wastes is worth noting. It's thrilling to be on board some of the warships and sails(replica). The video clips on warships and submarine were added bonus. Overall, it's an amazing experience.

Nice dip into the world of the Australian Navy . There are three ships that can be boarded . Toddlers loved the visits to the ships (luckily they met minimum height requirement) however the museum itself held little interest for them. Most likely due to their age. Access to their outdoor area to access the tables and chairs is tricky.

The Australian National Maritime Museum defiantly a great afternoon to spend with the family, from old war ships, to a submarine to explore or the old world Viking ship to board & play dress up. Certainly a place we'll be back to on a regular visit.

An easy walk from the hotels in the area, such as the Sofitel Darling Harbour that I was staying at. Like many museums, there are guest exhibits from time to time, and when I visited they had an exhibit on award winning photography. That said, the main focus of the museum, as the name suggests, is maritime-based exhibits. Plenty to see, including many different restored boats that still float. There's even a helicopter suspended from the ceiling, quite impressive to stand underneath and next to it. Well worth a visit if you are in the area, and quite well priced for the amount of content you get as well!

This is a lovely museum! So much real history to see, the ships are simply great to see. There is a bit of a wait for the submarine, but you can skip the queue for the HMS Vampire! and the old replicas are also quite the attraction. Hard to imagine sailing months on end on these ships! Well worth the visit! Great for kids! I am not sure if its always on, but during school break, they had a craft area setup beside the cafe. The kids loved it!

Loved being able to walk onto the boats and look inside, although the submarine was a bit tight getting in and awkward getting around, a little more instruction and forewarning for this would’ve been nice. The museum itself was huge, and photography area was a true highlight. The rest of the museum was a little drab, but that’s personal taste, was still interesting to see and worth the $25 to fill in the day. We’re happy we went.

Superb Maritime Museum that allows you to explore an entire Navy vessel, a submarine and even an entire replica of Captain Cooks legendary ship called the Endeavour. Even if you don't have much interest in ships, you'll definitely learn something new about them. I highly recommend a visit. The included museum is interesting as well and definitely worth a visit as well.

The Australian National Maritime Museum is a treasure trove for ship enthusiasts of all ages! From old-time large sail ships to a modern naval destroyer, a submarine, and even a replica of Captain Cook's legendary ship, the Endeavour, there's an impressive collection of vessels to explore. The museum offers a captivating showcase of Australian maritime history, with knowledgeable staff available to provide information and assistance. It's a perfect day out for families with kids, as well as for those who are young at heart. Even if you're not particularly interested in ships, you'll still learn something new and fascinating during your visit. The museum itself is worth exploring, with exhibits featuring nautical artifacts, art exploring the sea, and insights into marine conservation. The museum boasts two floors of amazing displays, including old maps, navigating equipment, exciting stories, and captivating artifacts. Special exhibits, like the National Geographic Wildlife Photographer of the Year, are also on display and are sure to capture the imagination of kids. The location is convenient, just across the walking bridge from many restaurants and shops at Darling Harbour, making it a perfect day out with plenty of dining options. Keep in mind that wait times may be longer on weekends, school holidays, or public holidays, but the experience is well worth the price of admission. With five ships to explore and a wealth of exhibits to discover, it's a must-visit for anyone interested in maritime history and culture. Highly recommended for families and anyone looking for an enriching outing!

We loved going through the Endeavor replica. It’s fascinating to see how these ships functioned and what life we like onboard a sailing ship in mid-1700. We also went through the submarine. That was incredible! 60 men living in that tiny tube underwater for 7 weeks at a time.

When we bought tickets the staff member had a bit of a sassy tone telling us the museum closed in 45 minutes and the ships had “well and truly closed”. All useful information (that we already knew) just not passed on in a friendly or positive way. We had little ones with us and 45 minutes can feel like an eternity some days. Having said that, the museum itself and the Lego exhibition was really well done and I could definitely spend a lot more time there on a future visit.

We had very nice time here, it is a great immersive experience for us weather it’s the HMAS Onslow or the vampire, they both bringing us fabulous memories. I would recommend this museum to you, and it’s a great place for family trip with kids as well.

An interesting museum with lots to see. Inside, there are a few floors venting the galleries. These have information about the maritime history of Australia. There is lift and/or ramp access to all galleries, the wharve, and the viewing platform. Outside, there are different ships you can explore, including a copy of the Endeavor and HMAS Onslow. The staff were enthusiastic and happy to chat. There is no wheelchair access to the vessels. There are toilets that were reasonably clean. This includes toilets for people with a disability on the ground and lower floors. There was also a gift shop and cafe. The cafe was wheelchair accessible. There are wheelchairs available for hire, but you are advised to book in advance. Carers get free access, though proof of position must be presented at ticket purchase. Audio-induction loops are also offered. There is free entry to the permanent galleries, but you have to pay for special exhibits.

Stylish museum in Darling Harbour. We explored the inside of a submarine and a destroyer. You can experience how small the inside is, etc. Everywhere we went, they were kind and explained the inside in detail. You can learn a lot of history at the museum. And it is great that you can take pictures with your camera or phone everywhere.

So much more to see than we realised and entry was reasonably priced. They had great school holiday programs (weaving, lego, sensory) and it wasnt too crowded for holiday time either. Be prepared to sqeeze through small spaces and steep ladders if you want to explore the submarine and ships. We could check in luggage while we visited, and the gift shop had something for everyone. Absolutely loved visiting and would visit again!

A modern maritime museum with some captivating exhibits — highlights include a submarine walkthrough, battleship tour, and a SUPER widescreen education theatre. A fun, somewhat brief, voyage through seafaring wonders! ⚓

A great place to spend a few hours, especially with kids. There are 4 different ships on the water that one can go on and explore, including a submarine - HMAS Onslow. In the actual museum, the exhibits are detailed

Hands down one of the best museums I've ever visited! The boat ride through Sydney harbour alone was worth the ticket price. Seeing the boats and hearing all the great information from the volunteers made the visit truly epic. I sincerely recommend paying it a visit!
