Do not choose this hostel, thought it would be the best place as it’s right in the city centre however the staff and the way the hostel was run felt more like being in school having been told what to do with surveillance from the reception and other workers all the time. The kitchen closing between 2pm-3pm is ridiculous as this is just a convenient time to still make food. As well as that the kitchen is supposed to close at 10pm, however the cleaners will remove hobs around 9pm to ensure you don’t start cooking even though there is still an hour left. The staff never get off your back about the most minor issues and definitely speak about you to not just other staff but other guests which is entirely unprofessional. The girl with the tattoo on her hand likes to bully and even with a private room they use their special key to come in even if told not to come in which is an entire invasion of privacy. The only exception of this hostel is the manager Mo who is very respectful and kind to the guests. Besides that, as mentioned before it’s as if you’re child in a boarding school with the staff as teachers. If you’re looking to have a chill and nice time this is not the place to stay.

Would never stop here again. Management definitely prefer the longer term guests and also share confidential information throughout the hostel in order to create tension and atmosphere. There’s nothing really positive about our stay here that I could draw upon. The surveillance from reception 24/7 and constant reminders about the cleanliness of the kitchen felt more like harassment. People here have clearly become to comfortable in the ability to create drama in what suited their agenda. Especially the reception staff who no back bone and always have to resort to “higher authority”. A place would not stay if you paid me.

I understand that we need to be mindful and follow the rules in a time of a pandemic but this hostel is taking it to the extreme in my opinion. I'm constantly being watched by staff and asked to put my mask on after I take a sip of my coffee. There's one staff member constantly patrolling the common areas to catch people breaking covid rules. If you want to be extra covid safe than this is the hostel for you. There are other hostels I've stayed at that don't completely kill the vibe and where you can still enjoy socialising whilst being mindful of covid.

I stayed in a double bed ensuite room by myself. The room was quiet and clean. The location was perfect- it could not have been closer to Central Station. I liked the supplied power-board, so I could charge all my devices. I also liked the 24 hour check-in. My only suggestion would be some clothes hangers, but I made do by hanging my clothes over the high luggage rack. Personally I think this room would be too small for two people, but it’s great for a solo traveller on a budget.

DO NOT BOOK - if you want to sleep. The noisiest and most uncomfortable rooms. Cleaning staff slam a vacuum into your door every morning at 9am. The club in the basement of the hotel shakes the whole building until 3am and the paper thin walls and heavy doors mean you hear everyone and everything. On top of the noise the rooms have the most pathetic excuse for blinds. Most likely made using tracing paper. The rooms are flooded with light at 5am. We took the bedsheets over and hung them over the window - this did little to stop the light. We stayed in a private room rather than a dorm and on arrival we had shower gel, shampoo etc. we stayed for 7 nights and between three of us needed extra supplies. Reception denied any knowledge of these products being supplied and told us to go to the chemist to get more. Only two very slow and unreliable lifts for 8 floors. The coffee bar in the hotel also take an age to take and make your order and on two occasions completely forgot my drink. A few good points… Most of the staff are very friendly and the location is perfect. Next door to central station and plenty of places worth a visit are within walking distance. The hotel does offer activities (but there is always a slight catch - between careful)

Overall a good experience, however, it felt like more of a hotel and less of a hostel. They host events everyday, which is great. But the lobby and kitchen set up does not promote a super social atmosphere. On top of that most of the travelers were all I'm groups so meeting people was not as easy as some other Hostels. The hostel is large so tons of people (can be a good and a bad thing depending how you look at it), clean, and provide tour options. So it has its perks, but I possibly would look elsewhere for my next stay and focus on somewhere smaller with a better hostel atmosphere

Incredible place and experience! Location was fantastic being right next to central station and just a short walk into the CBD and to the harbour! Staff were lovely and happy to help out with anything! We stayed in a private room as there was a group of us travelling and it honestly had everything we needed! We had no issues with noisiness during our stay other than the occasional bump on the walls or a train horn from the station. Facilities were clean and showers had great heat and water pressure which was greatly appreciated especially it being winter! Wake Up had so many events that you could join in on each day and the side bar underneath the building was incredible for meeting new people and having fun! Good security at night which, as a group of girls travelling, was very appreciated and good to see. Overall would 100% stay here again next time I am in Sydney!

I have stayed at over 50 hostels worldwide and Wake Up Hostels is doing it the RIGHT WAY! This is the hostel you want to stay at. It’s large, clean, organized, great staff, very secure, and has a lot of amenities like an onsite cafe, kitchen, laundry, bar, vending machines, gym passes, and a co-working space. There are activities everyday and people actually show up for them! I did the free beach walking tour with like 50 people…50 people!! The dorms themselves are clean and have lockers. It’s also very secure, your room key only works for the front door, the floor your room is on, and your room. There’s always someone at the front desk ready to help! You’ll definitely meet some friends at this hostel if you are open and willing to. You won’t regret staying here.

I really enjoy my stay, it's a clean environment, good kitchen ( just not enough space sometimes in the fridges) and great social activities! Also free entrance for the sidebar and fun events. Siebe and Johnny are the nicest employees!

Stayed here for 3 weeks. Great hostel, the best part is all the social events they have such as free wine Wednesday, pub crawl on Sundays, and beer pong tournament on Saturdays. It’s a great way to drink and meet people. Rooms are loud but it’s a party hostel with 10 person rooms and there’s a club downstairs so what else can you expect

Very clean and comfortable hostel. Beds were super comfy. Staff was very friendly. Location was great. However it is a huge hostel, so the kitchens were always overrun with people, and it was a bit challenging to meet people. Very young crowd also. But overall it’s a great home base for exploring beautiful Sydney!!

My wife and I stayed here for a week this month and it was fantastic. Right across the street from the main train station and a block from trams and buses so you can get everywhere w/o using a cab or Uber. There is a great cafe on site that opens at 7AM with coffee, drinks, and breakfast for purchase. Super helpful staff available 24/7 and lots of activities going on included a Friday Downtown walking tour and Wednesday Coast Walk to Bondi, both free. Bar / nightclub on lower level with a fun social vibe. Most guests here are under 30 so if you feel more comfortable with an older crowd this may not be the place for you - the nightclub crowd can carry on until after midnight. We are both 60+ and totally enjoyed this place even though we were twice the age of the average guest! Good on ya, Wake Up!!

This is a great hostel and perfect for the solo traveler or if you are on a budget. Very close walking distance to and from central train station and Haymarket light rail. The rooms are really nice and kept clean, well maintained. I was in a four bed mixed dorm, so the smaller the dorm room is, the more cosy it is. There are lockers for each person available, but you will need to speak to the staff at reception and they are friendly and helpful. The bathrooms and showers are also nice and well maintained. The service is really good, staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. You will have to pay deposit for towels if you require but most of it is refundable after you check out. However, this place, rooms and service is really good and the price is well suited for budget travellers or if you want to mix with other travellers. I would recommend a visit to this place.

Positive: Room was spacious. Mattress comfortable. Nice vibe in the room and some good social events. Location is great for public transport. The bar downstairs isn't great but it's a start for finding friends. Negative: Kitchen was a bit hectic and there was not enough space to put my food in the fridge or the cupboards. My dorm room was on the 7th floor and windows could not open and it was WAY TOO HOT in the morning, whatever air vent system there is, it doesn't do much. Overall: A pleasant experience, not much to complain about

Loved my stay here! Great location and so good for people travelling solo like myself as is a social hostel. Has a basement bar/club which you couldn’t hear from your room. Beds are comfy and hostel is clean throughout. Good kitchen facilities. Would definitely stay again and recommend.

MARINA MARINA MARINA!!! Wow what a wonderful service from that amazing human!!! She did more than you can ask for and I really appreciate you for that! She helped me all 3 times to extend my stay in fully booked backpacker and she worked her magic and find all ways something! Only thing you can get from her is the biggest smile kindest face and 110% quality and professionalism! Thank you so so much! She could run this place with closed eyes! I stayed here a week and all workers where absolutely amazing and very friendly from the downstairs operators to cleaner staff or whoever wears Wake Up uniform Thanks all of you for your kindness, quality and welcoming attitude!

Wonderful location to start with. Right opposite Central Station grand concourse and Murray's Bus office. Loved the ease of check-in and the details provided. Very vibrant surroundings and people. Right next to all the 24/7 eateries plus anything you would need at night time. Loved the neat clean rooms and washrooms, along with a laundry. Nice place on the 1st floor to get your food and eat with others, and the ground floor is always milling with people who love to strike a conversation with you. Shall be coming back for more for sure!

Probably the best hostel I’ve ever stayed. Clean, the room and the bathrooms, large rooms, not noisy, good location, and also heaps of activities like the bar, walk tours and pizza night on Monday. Staff was lovely as well, gave me a place to leave my luggage during the day after I check out and happy to help and explain everything. Highly recommend

I really enjoyed the time I had in the hostel. You are able to meet new people and get new friends. Especially the activities which the staff organized were great to connect with new people. Everyone from the staff did a great job and especially Linda was one of my favourites. If you are searching for a great time I can totally recommend this hostel

This hostel had everything I needed, the reception was helpful and nice. It’s easy to meet people with many events. Cons: 8 bed dorm can get loud at night. $10 laundry is expensive so I’d avoid that. The washrooms were not cleaned very often, which was a bit unpleasant. And there was no compost for food waste. Other than that I had a great time

Tidy Hostel, well kept & maintained, only things that were negative were the noise from the above floors is pretty bad, sound proofing problems/wooden floorboards just gotta hope they people above you aint animals, theres no aircon or fans & the windows dont open, so in summer prepare to melt & have the worse sleep, I went an bought my own fan, Staff are nice, I was in a room that went from 350 a week to like 760 a week, if I was going to pay that much might as well rent a hotel, the showers are horrible lol alright if you are 5ft tall, close to the wall an angle straight down onto your feet stupid design.

Excellent spot in an extremely central location. I only stayed a night during transit but the room was immaculately clean, staff very friendly and there's a nightclub underneath that was pumping, although I had an early flight. Quick train to/from the airport, station is right across the road.

stayed here 3 days. lots of events happening each night. free tours during the days. if you forget a towel u can hire one for $15 and you get $10 back. bathrooms are clean, water pressure is good and water nice and hot. mattress in room is very comfortable and pillow is great. rooms are big. lockers are about 60cm high (so not too big) location is very good.

A very good hostel ideally located in the city centre and right beside Central station so it is easy to get anywhere. Rooms and bathrooms are clean and tidy. It’s a very big hostel and only one lift was working my entire stay (I was there on and off for 3 weeks), so it was time consuming going up and down floors which was annoying but could not be helped. The kitchen is tiny and very busy but it’s not necessary to cook with so many food places near by. Staff were lovely and helpful.

Amazing hostel with a bar and cafe downstairs. You have everything you need at Wake Up! and the staff are great. Especially, Eve on front desk. She was so helpful to me. Thank you, Eve! The only reason I can't give 5* is because the windows in the rooms don't open and there is no air circulation... so it gets very stuffy. Also, the sanitary bin in the women's toilets was full to the brim for 2+ days. Please consider cleaning them more often.

Very conveniently located with trams and trains available within about a 5-10min walk away. Hostel also hosts many social events, great for making friends while on exchange or even just a short holiday! Bathrooms are shared but are clean and big with hair dryers available too.

Stayed here for 3 days. Room was small but clean. Toilets and showers were very clean and spacious. Located right across from Central station. The blinds in our room didn't really block out the sun and as a result woke up consistently at 6am due to the room being so bright. But not a big issue.

we stayed in the "penthouse" with a group of friends. this place has great staff, is super accommodating, very friendly! Close to the station, easily accessible, great for an overnight stay after a night of celebrations! Very clean rooms AND shared bathroom. the bathroom is the cleanest shared-bathroom i have ever used and i am a frequent traveller (Australia and overseas)! Free breakfast the next day was AMAZING!

This hostel is in the perfect location, there is a nightclub downstairs and a cafe. Staff are friendly and helpful. It's a good hostel to start off with as it's a great place to meet people and make friends. There is always drinking events on level 1 and you can get vouchers for the nightclub downstairs.

Wake Up! Sydney’s location was perfect for us because we used public transportation to get around. All lines go to Central Station. We found adequate food options in the area, restaurants, supermarkets and convenience stores. The rooms & restrooms were clean. The staff was helpful. The price was right.

Clean rooms, fun day time activities. Kitchen and eating area are both closed at 10pm, too early for a hostel. Side bar in the basement is a night club after 9pm every night, not good if you want to talk to anyone but if you just want to dance it's ok.

I booked this hostel cause it was highly rated but it was definitely my worst hostel experience (my 13th hostel as a solo traveller). The first room I was assigned was an absolute disaster. Peoples stuff was strewn everywhere, there was garbage and people were eating in the room. Though this isn’t necessarily cause the hostel is bad, the fact that they don’t ensure their quests are following good etiquette speaks volumes. I asked to change rooms and they were very accommodating. The second room was significantly cleaner but still the messiest room I’ve stayed in. It wouldn’t surprise me if the old shopping bags in one corner of the room are from an old guest and they just never throw them out, thinking they belong to a current guest. Even in my new “cleaner” room I found a cockroach in my clothes the next morning which was gnarly. The bar in the basement is also far too loud. You can barely hold a conversation cause the music is so loud. Even with six floors between the bar and my room, I could still hear the music and feel the floors shake. The doors to the rooms are loud and the walls are thin. I still slept fine, but would not recommend if you’re sensitive to noises and vibrations.

One of the best hostels I've ever had! Great location close to central station, Chinatown, shops and the whole city center! We loved the room, quiet, comfortable and plenty of windows! Also had a great cleaning service in the common areas, bathrooms were always clean and tidy. Plenty of activities everyday! Coffee shop was good, great food and great service! Thanks guys will highly recommend!

Best Hostel in Sydney. I really enjoyed my stay here, especially the Sidebar, the Cafe and of course the staff were great. I even made a new friend, Francesco a staff who was very welcoming.

I really enjoyed my stay at Wake up, bathrooms were very clean, so was the kitchen (they have people regularly go to tidy it up). Kitchen is closed everyday from 2-3pm and 10pm-6am. The room was okay, the pillow was a bit too low for me but it’s just a personal preference. Towel rental is possible (10$ deposit) and 20$ deposit for the key. Every floor except for floor 1 has a laundry room, vending machine on ground floor sells small bags of laundry powder (enough for one load) for 1$ (20 cents surcharge if you pay with card). Nice cafe and bar in the hostel, they offer some free activities like guided walks and pizza/cheese and wine nights. Very nice vibes, I’ll definitely go back there if I go to Sydney again!

I had an excellent stay from beginning to end. Upon check-in, I was greeted with a smile and friendly conversation, and had the activities, facilities and key card explained to me. When I checked out, I received a friendly farewell and was asked if I needed my bags to be stored. I was pleasantly surprised with the condition of my private double room, complete with desk and television. However, the windows were unable to be opened to allow air circulation, and I could not locate an air conditioner. It was lucky therefore that I was staying during the colder months, so this didn't bother me, but I hate to think how stuffy and hot the room would become during Summer. Furthermore, the foam mattress was uncomfortable, the walls paper thin, and loud noises from the street could be easily heard, and sometimes made it difficult to get to sleep. This is to be expected though from a hostel, and I was happy to overlook this. I am looking forward to choosing Wake Up Sydney when I next travel, because there is no other place where I'd rather Wake Up. Thank you for such a lovely stay.

Best location, very nice staff. I accidentally placed a booking on a wrong day, about a week before my trip. Called their reception and even that was midnight, they kindly switched the room for me without extra charges. When i actually spend the night, their customer services are really good. Nice, friendly staffs with a lot activities for you to try during your stay (most of them are cheap or even free). Highly recommended

I made an excellent choice by staying at Wake up hostel! Great location where you can reach all you need in the surrounding areas. Also rooms and toilets are clean. Finally, the daily dynamics are pretty nice. (The only thing they should improve is the kitchen, but even with that iys a great hostel).

Very social environment from the lobby to the rooms, and the staff go above and beyond to hold various events and themed parties often making it super easy to meet new folks. For an expensive city like Sydney it's pretty good and I would stay here again, but adding something like curtains to the beds would make the whole experience better. Helpful staff.

A great hostel and the perfect base for a trip to Sydney. It is located right across the street from the central station and there are multiple metro and tram stations nearby. A great place to meet new people and see a lot of Sydney, for example by joining the offered tours from the hostel itself. The rooms are clean and equipped with everything you need. The cafe and bar of the hostel are great too. Through the bar being so close, it would be necessary to clean the bathrooms more often though, specifically in evening and night times. All in all a good place to stay and explore the city.

I stayed at Wake Up Sydney Central for 2 weeks and had a great time! I solo traveled there and got my own room which had a TV, bathroom, great view and was really clean. The staff were really engaging and I meet so many friends that I wouldn’t of otherwise met if I didn’t stay in a hostel like this one. Every night there’s free activities during the day and at night so there’s lots to do without having to spend much. My first day I went to the cafe in the hostel and Rachel was my barista. She was so lovely to me and invited me out that night to an event at the hostel bar and had so much fun! Grateful for her and Mathilde for making my wake up experience so great!

One of the best Hostels I have stayed in. Wake Up Sydney is right in the heart of Sydney and brilliantly managed and staffed by knowledgeable, polite and helpful staff . My room, a private en-suite, while small was clean and had everything I needed including a TV. The basement bar was a bonus. I would happily return. Also serves some of the best coffee in Sydney

Stayed in a four-bed all female room. It was a bit small but it had lockers and each bed had a lamp and a charging point, although for one bottom bunk neither worked. No aircon and unable to open the window, so the only way for fresh air was opening the door for a bit. Other than that it was a very pleasant place. Clean bathroom and clean common room, which looked inviting. Showers were spacious, kitchen a bit small for the amount of people. Lobby looked really nice, staff was friendly, hostel has it's own bar and cafe. It might be a bit rough for a sensitive sleeper as some of the club/bar music could still be heard on the fifth floor. Great hostel for young, party people.

My sister and I stayed 4 nights in a 4 bed room. All visitors are kind and want to make friends. The kitchen gets pretty crowded at times but is usually decently clean. The hostels had good night life and free guided tours which was a good way to see the city. More guides are definitely needed for the tours as we lost our guide half way as it was such a large group. So we had to find our own way. Met great people, the location was wonderful. The second time we stayed unfortunately our keys and door were having issues, we had to go up and down with different options they thought would fix our door over 4 times. On the fifth time finally one of the front desk staff came to help us out and we figured it out.

Great location. It was right next to the train station. Very easy to get to and from the airport. The staff were super friendly. I was able to check in early which was great. This location had elevators which was also a bonus cause when I stayed at wake up in bondi it was difficult to haul my suitcase up 6 flights of stairs. Vending machines for drinks/snacks awesome. Great place to meet other travelers/new friends. Showers were good, lots of space in there I Didn’t feel to crammed. Lots of activities they offered which was another bonus. I will definitely stay here if I come back

Awesome stay in Sydney! The location is incredibly convenience. Staffs are kind and willing to share information. It's super fun to cook in the shared kitchen. But you have to bring your own seasoning, Which is not provided by hotel. The bar in the basement is a little bit loud in night. All in all, it's still awesome and I will recommend my friend to visit.

  • 5/5 Libby O. 10 months ago on Google
10/10 recommend. Amazing location, staff are super friendly and helpful, facilities are awesome and new. It’s all kept really clean and the common areas are huge. They also have free activities every day to join in on so nice and easy to meet people and a cafe and bar but it’s not loud at night. Stayed in a double room wich was perfect, but the dorms are also awesome. I really recommend staying here in Sydney.

Great staff and facilities available. Very Clean bathrooms and showers. Rooms tidy and beds comfy. Other travellers very friendly. Don't for get to bring a towel otherwise $5 + $10 for deposit. Lots of cool mostly free or cheap activities to do with other people staying there. Great Location right next to the central train station, buses and light rail. Highly recommend for new travellers or first time hostel users like I was.
