This was my first stay in a hostel. I had only experienced hotels and capsule hotels before, so I had no idea what kind of place a hostel was. But the result was very good! Maybe it was a good thing that I chose YHA. I had no problems with the showers, toilets, kitchen, lounge, lockers, etc. In addition, I even made friends in my room! I talked to people I had never met before, shared experiences, and sometimes went out somewhere. This was a new experience for me and very valuable. The staff was very attentive when we had problems and this is a very good hostel. Thank you very much!😊

We had a bad experience but was saved by two great staff who refunded our money. Their parking isn’t available. They hadn’t told us this so we ended up walking a block with all our luggage. Once we got there the staff that were on at the time were very odd and quite judgmental but they gave us our room. Later that night we went to get into bed and realised there was blood on the sheets and that the lock had been damaged on the door. We went downstairs and talked to the same people- they changed the sheet with the blood but said they didn’t have spares for the ones the blood sheets had been touching. They were very dismissive about the issue. Eventually we decided to go and stay somewhere else. When we went downstairs there were different staff (a lovely lady with brown hair in a bun and a nice gentleman with a beard- thank you both) I told them what happened and they were so kind and helpful. They gave us a refund and were absolutely wonderful. While the experience wasn’t great, and we were fairly creeped out about finding blood we would like to commend the two staff at the end for their amazing work.

Has all the amenities and the rooms are ok, but this is possibly the worst kitchen area I’ve seen in my 4 weeks travelling Aus so far. Every sink is filled with dirty dishes, every drying rack is filled with unclean attempts of washing up, bins are overflowing, drying towels are soaking and they smell, plus the fridges stink with food bags labelled as checking out 2 months ago. I appreciate the state of the kitchen is more to do with guests than the hostel, but the hostel should take action and responsibility. If the kitchen is really dirty and there’s no space to even wash up, more people will add to the mess as it becomes the norm. If the kitchen is spotless there’s less chance of someone leaving their dirty pan on the side. The hostel should clean up more often or get tighter on people not washing up. As a side note - I’ve never seen such a dirty clean pile of plates and cutlery before. The quality of washing up is never high in hostels but here it’s something else!

Absolutely horrendous experience. Because I had stayed for 14 days before. They cancelled my stay on the day before at saturday afternoon. When I went to the front desk was when they explained that I couldn't stay for longer than 14 days in 90 days, even though I know many that did. No refund on a Saturday and no customer support left me stranded in a pretty booked Sydney. Thanks for nothing.

The Bad - The check-in process was rather very labored. They require you to provide identity and then they take a photo of your face with their webcams supposedly to use facial recognition in their building to keep a track of your movements (I felt that this was an invasion of my privacy). The keycards that were provided did not work for our room had to be reissued. Additionally you're only allowed to use the bathrooms on your specific floor and not only that they're keyed to your assigned gender so good luck if you identify as anything but binary or you muddle up your keycard with your travel companions. The room was very drab it was clean enough, but the cupboards didn't close properly and there was only 2 power outlets for 4 people so good luck charging your devices. The good - The common areas were quite nice and there was a nice atmosphere to the place so that was nice, the location is amazing as it's right in front of central station so provides very convenient transport options to almost everywhere. Chinatown is also a stones throw away out the door and to your right plenty of food and drink everywhere you turn at all hours of the day. But to be honest with you the staff really let this place down as they weren't very friendly and didn't understand the gravity of the concerns I had or just didn't know how to listen and be empathetic. All in all, the place is a far cry from the YHA at The Rocks, if you get the chance book there instead it's well worth it for a similar price.

This place is perfect for everyone regardless short or long stays. Located beside Central station, it makes the commute accessible and if you are here for concerts, it is directly accessible from the stadium. Front desk staff were friendly too and I have no complaints over my room mates

YHA Sydney Central was my first hostel experience and it was the best I've had. I loved the view I got during my stay here (Central Station's tower clock). The hostel is conveniently located in the central with Haymarket Station just right across the hostel's entrance door and Central Station being 5 minutes walk (if not lesser). Check in and check out were hassle free. Volunteers and housekeepers manage the hostel's cleanliness well (bathroom, kitchen). Although I encountered an issue on my second stay here, I was assisted with great care by front desk staff (a lady and a guy) during wee hours. Didn't catch their names, but I appreciate it so much! I'd recommend this hostel than the others in the area simply for the safety and overall cleanliness.

Great hostel with a lot of shared facilities that offer a lot of possibilities such as shared huge fridges, co-working spaces, a pool, chill areas, nice lookout on the city etc. Our room was minimalistic but more than enough for the cheap price. The staff is friendly and all shared rooms are properly cleaned on a daily basis. We would definitely choose this amazing hostel again!

This hostel is definitely the best in the city that I've been to with working AC, proper showers, and close proximity to clubs and shops in the heart of downtown. There's often 200 guests and it is easy to make friends. Next door is the central train station that makes everything accessible, especially the airport. Will at YHA made my experience 10x better

Place is loud, badly ventilated, expensive. My room had a very very loud snorer, so I asked to move, they let me, I went to this other room and it smelt off. I then got a reaction from one of the beds I chose to sleep on, I found that behind it looked like it had never been cleaned, ever. My nose was running and throat was dry from that, eyes watering. I then move to another bed in the same room because cbf moving rooms again. I pull the sheets up on me ready for sleep and what do you know they smell like vomit. Absolutely disgusting.. i asked for a refund, they gave it, but I feel like they should have done more here. Showers were mouldy too, same with the common area lounge chairs on lvl 1. Every single one of them had mould or intense decay and a smell. Yuck

The location is perfect to commute and approachable to everywhere in sydney. It's really good chance to meet and get along worldwide mates as well. The cafeteria is so spacious and fresh that you guys can cook conveniently. Except that, there are movie theater, co-work and laundry rooms each of even numbers' levels And the safety is thorough, still I recommend that personal stuffs are better to put in the locker. Better safe than sorry :)

The room and ensuite was clean, and in good repair. Bathroom was set up to accommodate wheelchairs/limited mobility etc. The staff were helpful and friendly. Will definitely stay again and recommend it as above expectations for the price point. Also the kebab shop next door is awesome.

The hostel is in a really great location and the staff are helpful and friendly. There are lots of facilities to use during your stay, a cinema room, a pool and a co-working space, laundry etc. The room I was staying in was REALLY dark, the light was super dim and my bedside light didn’t work. Overall it’s a good place to stay for the amount it costs.

Atmosphere is meh. Not a lot of interaction between people. You see a lot of groups of one certain language. I think thats a downside of big hostels. Wouldnt recommend for solo travellers. The rest is good. Friendly staff, clean rooms. Bathrooms could be cleaner though.

Great location. Possibly the cheapest location for a stay in Sydney. The building felt safe. No problems with theft. There were many bedbugs. Horrible, but it’s what you get for the price. Sheets were stained with blood and other strange stain. Loud music was heard from other rooms during late night.

It is literally disgusting. There is hair all over the showers. Dirty, period-stained undies left in the bathrooms. Beds without any linen or bedding. Stains all over the beds and walls. Hair all over the beds. Dirt all over the floors. Third story windows without any safety bars or fly screens. And to top it all off we asked staff nicely if they would be able to clean the bathrooms so we could actually shower and they said no it’s not their job and that they only clean the bathrooms every 3 months! I think that’s just revolting and unsanitary. Would rather die than have to stay here again.

Friendly helpful staff, good kitchens, and unbeatable location. It's clean, decor a bit dated but that's what keeps it affordable. Clean bright eating area. There was a slight issue with rates at booking, however this was swiftly resolved by management. Will be back, thank you.

Never see you again! I slept at YHA hostels all along the east coast and was very satisfied. But in Sydney I ended up showing what the company thinks about customer loyalty. Because of the Taylor Swift concert they simply charged 100% and I paid $120 for an 8 bed room. When I asked, the staff at the counter just said very cheeky offer and demand 🤮 Where I come from, that's not how they treat customers!!!

Had a great stay at hostel. The location was great and the staff were amazing. Rudy and Karl were super helpful at the front desk. They gave great recommendations and helped point me in the right direction for events and things to do! Everything was clean and orderly. Some small improvements: it would be nice to have shampoo dispensers for showers, outlets for the bunk beds and also the Breakfast could used some trays. 100% would stay again special thanks to rudy and karl!

A fantastic hostel right beside central station. Rooms are clean, and they don't over crowd the dorms. Staff are friendly and helpful. The building has a good layout, although I think the kitchen is a little small. It's a bit expensive, but so is all of Sydney (and all of Australia), unfortunately.

I have the most amazing experience in this hostel. It's perfect for people arriving to Sydney, because it's located near everything you'll need. The rooms are big and the beds comfortable. The lockers were a bit uncomfortable though, they have a plug in the inner wall that is difficult to reach with your devices once you store your things. The amenities of the hostel were always shiny clean. The terrace is an amazing place! The kitchens are big, full of fridges and storage places. Also the cinema was a lovely place to stay in rainy afternoons. The staff was the best, they were very helpful. I would (I will) go again to this hostel!

Perfect hostel for staying in Sydney city centre. The room was clean and bed was comfy. The bathrooms aren’t spotless but weren’t unusable either. Really spacious kitchen and common area that was well maintained during our stay.

Good value hostel. It's very big so don't expect a super social experience. There is still a nice atmosphere though. Some of the facilities like the movie room and quotes sauna were closed and the pool is cold, but otherwise the facilities were nice.

Great hostel in central Sydney. I went for a 4 bed female dorm, which was really reasonably priced compared to other hostels. It was clean, nice and quiet and the hostel is really well located. Great for access to Chinatown for the Friday night market - worth a trip!

Big shout out to Karl and Alex working at YHA Sydney central! They made our stay really comfortable and safe ❤️ When we checked in, we were slightly skeptical but Alex and Karl provided so much assurance to us and we’re extremely helpful in clarifying any doubts we had ❤️ Initially, We weren’t comfortable in the first room we were put in, hence we requested for a shift in rooms after and it was done immediately without any fuss. In terms of cleanliness, I feel like the bedsheets/duvet should be changed after checking out as I noticed housekeeping not changing the duvets. Also weren’t comfortable on how the male housekeepers could come in freely into the all women bedrooms as there were instances where we would be changing etc. The toilets were cleaner than I expected but don’t expect hotel level of standard. Overall, it was a good stay and loved loved LOVED the events at the bar downstairs! And LOVED the convenience of the location, everything is nearby (Central station, Chinatown, etc.)

Location is great, staff are nice, only downside is the walls are quite thin - you can hear doors shutting, people walking up and down the corridor etc all night.

The hostel is nice, central location, lots of space for lounging, good facilities (pool, cinema room) although I didn’t use them. The hostel overall was good. Dorm room was big. Had large communal areas but only had seating around the outside meaning there was a big space in the middle which was useless and not enough seats for people to sit down in the evenings. It’s very classic inner city style hostel where you had to use you keycard for everything. Couldn’t use the lift and get onto your floor without a keycard so I’m not sure why it’s necessary to put keycard locks on all the bathrooms on your floor too. Showers were good, had changing space cubicle with the showers which was nice. My real issue with this place was a big one for me. No room available to put my bag before check in or after checkout. You had to Pay per hour to use a locker!! I had to change my plans whist here as I wasn’t willing to carry 27kg around whilst I saw the city. For such a well known hostel chain, there’s no point providing these extra/ nicer facilities if you can’t even provide the basics… as all other hostels do. Not to mention 20mins after checkout I wanted to use the toilet - I was sent to the cafe next door who turned me away for not being a paying customer! You can’t even go to the toilet after checking out despite having stayed there multiple nights!! Disgraceful service. All other hostels I have been to allow you to use all their facilities all day after checkout apart from your dorm room. What a rubbish way to end my time at this hostel.

Excellent location, directly opposite Central station. Only hostel I found in Sydney that would accept over 35's in dorms. Great reception and house staff. Comfy beds. Excellent showers. Everything very clean. Huge lockers in rooms. Way less expensive than others similar. Great cafe attached. Light rail right outside the door. Win, win, win.

Stay at Stoke Beach House people. Better value for the same money. www.stokebeachhouse.com.au Stoke Beach House is a modern and up to date hostel that also suffered massive losses during the Corona Virus ... not to mention every other business all over the globe. Stoke Beach House have a fully equipped kitchen (oven included and utensils for guests to eat with), a walk in cool room with cameras both inside and out so food doesn't go missing, in fact, cameras cover all areas of the hostel, breakfast (with eggs, juices, fruit, breads, cereals, hot chocolate, coffee and tea) every day, movie room (bean bags, projector screen with Netflix etc), a Bar with pool table and BBQ area, bike and surfboard hire, yoga, daily activities, 30 seconds from the beach right in the hub of Manly and a short ferry ride into the city. Their rooms have comfortable mattresses that don't jab your ribs with springs, dorm room beds with curtains for privacy, bathroom comes with rainfall shower heads, and the hostel is cleaned by employed cleaners. Reception staff are lovely as are the guests. In terms of value, there is no comparison.

Great location across the road from central station as well as light rail and busses both stopping directly outside the front door. Premises are super secure with key card necessary to access any floors, rooms or facilities. Staff are excellent and you will meet plenty of like-minded people during your stay. Highly recommended 👍

Staff were friendly and very helpful. Location is convenient, but bring earplugs! Tram right outside (positive or negative depending on your view) and very thin walls. The room was SO STUFFY, could barely breath and so hot, felt kinda lightheaded. It'd be nice if they could install a mesh over the windows or something just so guests can atleast open them. It got cooler at night so I survived but damn, not even a fan (reception said they have a large order of them coming in but don't know when, was there Nov 2023 for ref). Also I think the pics can be deceiving, Didn't know we'd have to make our own beds which after a long, hot day and in said stuffy rooms is not pleasant. I didn't like how you have to use your room card to get into the bathrooms and elevators but I can guess why, I think there's probably a better way to go about it though. Speaking of the bathrooms, they were fine. Shower water pressure a little low and toilets were kinda cramped in the womens bathroom on my floor. They have a hair dryer in there though. They have separate locker storage that can fit quite a large suitcase or bag (I don't think you have to be a guest to use it but not sure). It's all automated and in multiple languages. $4 upfront for first 3 hours, you pay extra when you come back if it goes over. (An extra $2 I think for the next 3 hours, the pricing was kinda confusing but still relatively cheap.) Breakfast is $12 (ask reception for a ticket) to select from your usual buffet style set ups, cereals, juice, bread, etc or a cafe in the same building, kinda expensive though.)

I booked to stay a few weeks ago for 5 nights. The only way I could book and pay in advance was to book a ‘non refundable’ room. (Same price regardless) I checked in and went to my room to find the bedding was disgusting. I then changed it myself. There was someone in my room who said very inappropriate things to me and had unpredictable behaviour. I woke up at 1am to find that this person was looking at everyone while they slept which made me feel very uncomfortable and unsafe in this room. I checked out after staying for 1 night instead of 5 and the hostel staff asked me why and I explained. They then guessed who it was in an 6 bed dorm who was behaving in this way and they were correct which to me - says they knew there was an issue. The staff just apologised and said I couldn’t have a refund. There was no offer to move rooms or resolve the situation just an apology. I emailed the manager to ask if I could have a refund due to the fact that my leaving was because of a health and safety issue and feeling unsafe in the room. They emailed back to say that they take customer safety very seriously but they have a strict refund policy and they wouldn’t give me a refund but they do wish they could have resolved it differently. I find it wild that their refund policy outweighs safeguarding their customers. I would not recommend staying here if you are traveling alone as I ended up paying double for a week of accommodation. As I had to book an alternative hostel for the week.

Nice cheap option in a fantastic location. Only downside was the rooms didn't seem well insulated or the air-conditioning was on quite low and it was freezing at night.

  • 1/5 Luciana F. 2 years ago on Google
Very bad treatment by staff people, in a derogatory way, if the person who works there does not like to deal with backpackers workers, they should look for another job! It differs a lot from others yha, I always choose yha because they are friendly, my best experience in Australia is living in yha that's why when I came to Sydney I chose them but right now I'm will leave also with the despite that I’m already pay for today ! If you meet this person and it's unpleasant like me but you need to be in the area there is another hostel on the corner!

  • 3/5 Esha F. 2 years ago on Google
Great location. Friendly, helpful staff. Cool amenities, culture & community. As it is a backpackers, Yha isn’t the cleanest or fanciest of places to stay. Rooms are small & simple with obvious signs of usage over the years. A certain unpleasant smell wafts through the hallway on level 8. The bathrooms are not the cleanest. Overall good place to stay - for price & location! Roftop pool and cinema is a cool bonus

There is a huge difference between a private room with shared bath, and a private room with ensuite (which comes with electric kettle and TV). Kitchen is not so well equipped -- you may want to bring your cutting knife, pots & pans if you are planning to cook meals. Overall, very nice staff and comfortable stay.

Good cheap overnight accommodation when you come in from one train at night, and your next train isn't until morning. Best part, is that it be down the elevator and across the street from Sydney Central Train Station.

Only the kitchen space stopped me from giving it a 5 and that's picking holes really. For the numbers of the hostel it made the kitchens seem a bit small and could've been maintained a bit better but it is a hostel after all. Staff were super friendly and helpful, we were upgraded from a dorm to an ensuite double by Jennifer who had realised we weren't booked into the same dorm although travelling together. Thanks Jennifer!! The room was more like a wee hotel room complete with a TV if you're into that. Loads of common space to mingle and rooftop is a pretty cool hangout spot. Well done 👍

I spent one year in this hostel during the covid lockdown, it is a very comfortable place to stay that balances social spaces with having a quiet spot for yourself very well. The kitchens are a good size and I rarely even had to wait before I could start cooking. The facilities are regularly cleaned and well maintained. The staff are also really professional and very friendly. From my experience I couldn't recommend a better hostel in Sydney.

Pros. 1. Location 2. Kitchen/dining a+ 3. Many of the dorm rooms are very large size 4. Nice rooftop area Cons. 1.Expensive compared to other Aus Yha's price has droped since Covid but still up there 2. Reception staff can be hit or miss. High staff turnover so I guess this is understandable 3. Air con is always on but rarely felt 4. Secure locker room unrealistic prices

It was clean, comfortable and warm, but I had 1 unfortunate incident that entailed a missing item, unfortunately, but that's not managements problem, I was a little naive because I've never used a a dorm room before. But otherwise it's a 10 out 10 experience.

Communal spaces are fantastic. Massive kitchens with plenty of space to fit your food, both in the fridge and in cubby holes. Heaps of places to sit in the dining room area and lounge area. Rooms are large, but no plugs by your bed, only in the very back of the lockers. Bathrooms are pretty grim too, which is a shame compared to the rest of the hostel. Not the best place if you are just landing in Sydney as there isn’t any social events and people do keep to themselves. Staff are really lovely too.

"Beds" seemed to be nothing more than a 4" piece of foam rubber on a fairly rigid steel frame. Might be 'suitable' for one popular backpackers activity, but that's not a comfortable night's sleep. Road, traffic and internal noise didn't help either. Location is great, room facilities are fine, bed (and bedding - pillows in particular) sub-standard.

Used as a way to reduce lodging costs during Sydney vacation. The location is perfect and very convenient to hop on rail to all. The front desk staff was very kind. The ottomans and carpet in the room were filthy. Common areas need additional cleaning. The InCafe was delicious and convenient. I appreciate the stay, but will shop for a different place when returning.

I'd like to say best things for YHA. It is mostly dormitory so maybe is hard to sleep of course, but this place is well managed by all the staffs. Is clean, well equipped, and nicely located. It is not easy to find somewhere clean and easily accessible especially with the amount of budget. So much thanks. Staffs are really friendly and caring - I was having super hard pain and Tash helped me a lot to make an appointment with doctor in nearest place and time. Thanks a lot.

A perfect location for anything you may want to do in Sydney and beyond. So close to Chinatown and Darling Harbour, with many more places within an easy walking distance, such as Hyde Park, Pitt Street mall and circular Quay (or you can always use the light rail if you prefer not to walk). Buses to the eastern suburbs and more popular destinations super close too. My partner and I stayed in a private room with our own ensuite, and the room was extremely clean and tidy. Beautiful colourful art, and a tv, kettle, tea and coffee. It was nice to have towels provided, too. Amazing for the price of the room! There is a rooftop pool and terrace, which was lovely and. Great place to overlook the city and watch the sunset. There are lockers available for guests who arrive early or wish to explore the city after check out, which are priced well and means you don't need to drag your stuff about while you explore. Everything really was amazing, but the best part was the warm welcome we received from the beautiful Carmen who checked us in. She was so incredibly sweet and helpful, she really made the whole experience so wonderful. Thank you so much for Carmen for making our return to Sydney so exciting and special. We will absolutely return for another stay soon 🙂

I have zero photos of this place, but a couple of years back, I went to this place on a camp and I generally forgot to write a review. The rooms kinda sucked, the roof was mouldy and the room smelt kinda funky. Having no bathroom inside the room was just crazy as well. Service was pretty good, staff were friendly and yeah. Location is in the city centre where everything is, what else do I have to say. I don't know what it's like now, however, I do hope they can have a good look at their rooms to check for things such as mould for example.
