I booked this on AirBnb, the room was very rudimentary but it was all I needed and very good value, especially considering the location. My stay was a very pleasant one. I was only in town for one evening on business, I was a little out of sorts having been travelling and as soon as I arrived I was greeted with an incredibly warm smile from a woman at reception called Josefina. They kindly let me store my bags for an hour or two as I'd arrived early. On my return I was greeted by another equally friendly and genuinely engaged staff member called Dylan. The staff here made me feel very safe and right at home. A pleasant experience all round.

A plus sized backpackers hostel was a brilliant idea however I was disappointed to find out that I was the only morbidly obese person inside the hostel upon arrival. It was mostly skinny Europeans. Still a good time though. Note to any plus sized backpackers though: don't sleep on the top bunks! I learned the hard way.

Wifi works great, cheap rooms they don't discriminate (some hostels only accept people from overseas/tourist) but this one let me an Aussie stay. As long as you're under 40 you can get a mixed dorm (if over the limit you can get a private room I think.) 2 min walk from central station. Has showers, kitchen, tv, powerplugs what more can you want? I stayed on a Monday so was a bit quite but I enjoyed my short stay. -Erika V

Honestly, the only good thing about this place is the location. You’ll easily be able to walk everywhere to take public transit. Aside from location this place is disappointing. The staff isn’t friendly and they seem irritated any time you ask them a question. The kitchen is always a mess because people don’t know how to clean up after themselves. One evening we found our bag of refrigerated food left out on the counter when we know we put it back in the fridge that morning. People here are not respectful. I would not come back here at all. Sad to say because I’ve stayed in plenty of hostels and this was by far the worst one.

Awesome place!! They have private hotel type rooms and dorm type of accommodation. Stayed there multiple times and it was always clean and friendly. Free breakfast in the morning of toast and jams, tea and coffee. It doesn’t feel like regular over used backpacker accomodation, but more boutique environment. The location is unbeatable, with all modes of transportation at your fingertips. Very close to museums, parks, entertainment areas and Oxford st. It was always amazing to stay at Big Hostel.

Stayed here 9 nights, only saw the bathrooms get cleaned once and the room twice, the bathrooms are not only unisex but also always stink and do not look hygienic!! There was cockroaches in my friends locker and also next to my other friends bed, they don’t seem to clear out belongings after people check out either as I had people checking out my room each morning with a lot of belongings still being left there! They clearly never wash the blankets they give you as there is literally a note on the locker to use your flat sheet beneath your blanket because ‘do you really want the blanket on your skin from the last person…ew’ so it’s safe to say I never used it as that is gross that they don’t wash them The room didn’t seem to have air con so it was a sweat box in my room Kitchen seemed small and kinda unequipped so never used it and bathrooms like mentioned are dirty Only good thing was the common area which had a tv you could use and the staff were nice but I wouldn’t stay again in a hurry

This one is not a Hostel, this one is home :) I spent so much time here and it really felt as I was staying in the warmest, coziest and most welcoming place in Sydney. The staff in here are so friendly and helpful, they will always look after the people who stay here. The common area (kitchen, living and dinning room) is the perfect spot to socialize and interact with the backpackers and make some good friends. It is just one big place where you can gather around with the peeps and just have fun. Be open to meet people, that's the key! Rooms are very nice and comfortable, sometimes they might be a bit cold, but don't worry, go downstairs and ask for an extra blanket and problem solved! I will miss my family here, if I ever come back to Sydney, I will always come back home. Thanks to every single person I met in the hostel, I had the best time :) may we meet again my friends

The Manager and all the other staff are always willing to help everyone . The vibe in the hostel is super good and everyone always respect each other . Rooms kitchen and bathrooms are always cleaned and organized daily by the the amazing staff . The location is right in the city . Walking distance to Town hall just 10 min . The hostel has a very nice Roof Top as well . If you are looking for a place to stay in the center this is the place !!! Ciao .☺️☺️☺️ Grazie guys 😁

Room: 1 bed in an 8-bed Female dorm Pros: - Super great location! Just a few meters from Sydney Central station and the light rail stop - The room & the floor is surprisingly quiet, all guests respect each other - Ladies toilet/shower is clean and not smelly. It's great because I'm very fussy about toilet condition. Cons: - The bunk bed is old and not sturdy. I got the top bed and I was so worried I will disturb the lady on the lower bed every time I climbed the bed ladder because it made a lot of sound. - The pillow was very thin and old. And I think they never washed the throw/blanket because it was already on the bed when I arrived (they gave us fresh linens on arrival) and looked like someone used the blanket previously

I’ve stayed in plenty of hostels around the world and in Australia. I can look past the noisy guests, the bugs in the bathroom and the cliquey atmosphere. It was actually a decent enough stay. The cleaning staff actually tried their best. I had to swap rooms, fine. It’s happened before and I understand. At check in I was told that I have to call a number to have my bags put in the storage room if I need to leave early on room swap day and someone from reception will just come down to assist me. At 8.30am I did and the person answering the call suggested I leave $7500 worth of equipment at the door just so he can put it in the back room later. Totally disrespectful, don’t tell me to call the number if no one was going to help me. I could have made other arrangements.

$174 for one night single room en suite no breakfast. Ripped off. Faulty toilet roll holder. No remote for TV. I thought chair was going to break underneath me. Mattress was like a blob of jelly so I lost sleep. Air conditioning was too loud outside the room. Fridges should be for guests only not for staff to keep grog which took up space. Couldn't find a small space for my stuff. Credit card fee may have been charged but not advertised. Sign about credit card fee should be made visible upon check in and also online. Location is the only good thing about this Hostel. Don't stay here it isn't worth the money. People mucking around in small Kitchen also guy playing with scissors making the Kitchen unsafe. One large knife was completely blunt.

Josefina and Kamilo at the reception were really great and helped us for little things we needed. The atmosphere in the hostel is nice, with a little partying going on if you want it but also calm in the rooms 😊 It's super clean and tidy! The kitchen is very well equipped too! Overall I think it's one of the best hostels I've been to 😃

Stayed here for over a week and overall would NOT recommend at all. The cleanliness was ok but the (unisex) bathrooms really need updating. Female travellers felt uncomfortable as the shower and toilet doors have large gaps in where you can easily see through. One lock on the shower didn’t even work. The staff were not welcoming or friendly and gave little information about the hostel, facilities, activities etc. The staff were unhelpful and barely at reception. The whole hostel has a “clique” atmosphere (which the staff are in) with mostly long term stays. I was not aware of the times staff clean the kitchen daily as there are no signs or communication. When packing my food away to check out at 11am, a staff member came into the kitchen and shouted at a few of us that it was “bullshit” we were using the kitchen at this time, despite only giving a 10 minute warning sign which you can only see outside of the kitchen! Really unprofessional and rude. Seems odd to clean the kitchen at checkout time. The beds and mattresses are really old so make so much noise. The lockers are metal which again make too much noise. I stayed in two different rooms and they both smelt off, on one night, myself and the others in the dorm were even woken up at midnight as the hostel has double booked a bed! The overall atmosphere was really “off” and unfriendly, including the multiple signs that are really condescending! There is also a breakfast advertised which just doesn’t exist so needs taking off the website as this is false advertisement!

Overall good experience, staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Facilities are clean. Definitely good value for money and I enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a nice place to stay, I would recommend it for the budgeters out there that need a night somewhere clean.

Worst hostel i have been at so far. The receptionist wad rude and disrespectful. A small guy with a calvity. I asked him why they needed to take my CB digits, and rather than explaining, he got mad at me and told me straight away that he could cancel the reservation now. I also notice that he talked very bad to the customers before me. I calmed down the situation, went to the room, i saw that it was small with almost no window, i saw that the place has 0 to offer, and overpriced (55 dollar for a shared room) so i decided to get that refund that he mentioned. The dude kept not smiling, said that i threatened him and played the victim. Just don't do this job if it is to be so unpolite and nasty, just go work in some construction site where you wont have to be polite and smile. I prefered to sleep in my car where i would sleep better, than to be disrespected by some depressed nasty receptionist. it is just 4 walls and small beds.

Had a great stay here. Went for a private room as last minute the price was good. The room was tidy with everything you need. Nice bed and an en-suite bathroom with really good shower etc. The staff went out of their way and helped me out to organise a suitcase being delivered, which was really helpful for me. We could also leave our bags in secure lockers while we went out for the day after checking out. Overall it was great, thank you!

Great location for a good price. Room was good and the lockers big enough. It was really social because the hostel organized events almost every day. They gave good recomendations what to do in Sydney. Kitchen was really really dirty. But that's the guests fault and not the hostels. There was no socket near my bed. Bit all things considered it was a nice stay and met great people. Would recommend.

Stayed here first night. Unfortunately it was a 4 male share room with two bunks. I roll in my sleep every half roll felt like bed was going to tip. Price on room was too much for a share room. 50.00 per night. No privacy, no choice on bed when put into a room with 2 already in bed, Elavator was out of service. Don't get me rong. I'd stay there again if I did not have a choice. Good staff service at desk and night crew. Unfortunately I was locked out of room as I grabbed wrong card in the dark out of the bag.

My review is based on staying in Private Room 108. Room: -Run down -Dark -Window cannot be opened -Stagnant smell in the room -Good water pressure for shower and gets hot quickly -Bed is somewhat comfy -Ensuite needs a refurb and more storage space for things Communal Kitchen: -Needs a deep clean -Icky and gross Reception; -Some staff are friendly and helpful Location: -Good and close to various things in Sydney

Good rooms, lots of space inside.  The bathrooms are clean. Gently and friendly staff. There are every day activities organize by the hostell like barbeque on the rooftop, event in near clubs, the excursion to the Blue Mountain. I joined to the last one. A staff person (David) took us to visit the best places in Blue mountain area. It is a very good service, because the other private tours are more expensive.

If you are looking for a hostel, with good rooms, close to city /central station and very good staff-look no further. It is a hostel, so if you’re not used to that you will consider it basic. Get over yourself and realise why great value it is. There’s an range of rooms from dorm to double en-suite, good Wi-Fi and staff that are so attentive they even say hi when off duty and bump into you on the street.

  • 1/5 K A. 5 months ago on Google
The cleaner old woman who is wearing glasses is rude and unkind. She discriminates guests. I felt uncomfortable all of the time while she is working. Reception staff are all helpful, so it was pity she is there. Unfortunately, it was my worst experience with hostel in Australia.

One of the better hostels I stayed in. The common areas are not that big but there are also not that much people staying in the hostel. Helpful and friendly staff. The cheapest laundry room I have seen so far.

For a backpackers I gave it 4 stars. Rooms are fine, quiet, warm in winter, decent bedding and clean. I got my own room with ensuite, just had to overnight in the city for a meeting tomorrow, so it’s cheap and convenient, near Central and heaps of eateries. I’d stay here again 👍

Stayed three nights in Feb. Location is convenient and staff is helpful. Station is close and many tourist spot are around. Historical buildings, museum, harbour, opera house, shopping area, business district, cafe and restaurants etc. Walking around those places under beautiful weather is great experience. If you like walking, here is good option because i didn’t need public transport except airport train.

  • 4/5 Dirk M. 4 years ago on Google
We stayed there in a 4 bed room with private bathroom. The room was basic, there were locker in the room, a small TV at wall and 2 bunk beds, but that was all we needed. The bathroom was clean and also had the shower. Before the window there was a bug sign, so we couldn't see anything through it. The common area and kitchen was quite busy during the prime times and there were always people around to which you could talk. The staff was very helpful, raven in the night when we arrived at 0:30 am.

I've been in this hostel 4 months and it felt like home. Such a lovely place. Incredibly nice staff. The manager helen takes care of everything, a good rooftop and kitchen is mostly clean, and offers everything you need. And most important! Really quiet! The reception is always there if you have a problem and finds a way for a solution. Would always come back and would suggests to anyone. Thank you for everything!

Broken noisy aircon that feels like you’re sleeping outside only more noisy. What a rip off. This feels more like a public hospital than a private room. If I get sick from sleeping under a turbine you better believe everyone else gets sick too…

Good hostel with good price and good location. Friendly staff, spacious private room with own bathroom. Our bedroom was located next to the elevator so at some time it was a big noisy. The kitchen and common area is definitely to small for the hostel

Staff were really friendly and helpful. The hostel even tho it has a lot residents it was always clean and well kept. Good size living room to just hang and read or watch TV. Medium size kitchen with no freezer 🤔 and a small terrace. A good place overall to spend some time in Sydney. Thanks again!

We booked 4-Bed Ensuite for a family, we checked in late at 11pm, we were shocked that they arranged us into 2 different bedrooms (2 beds each rooom), that was not what we booked for, the reception said he can't do much because the Hostel is full. Second day, the reception did try to contact other 2 tenants if they can move to different rooms. The Italian and Turkey backpackers are nice, they are happy to move out so we are family can stay together, thank you very much. Third day, the reception rang me at 10.30am, informed us to check out to a different room, "upgrade us to a family room". I was angry because we were at Olympic Park and not able come back to hostel to move out our stuff. At the end, we moved to a family room after completed our events. I would rate one or two star for the mistake, but all the receptions are friendly and attitude are good, they try to solve the problem. Cleanliess - good Air Conditioning - good Drinking water provided Hot water shower

Absolutely the best hostel I've been to Australia so far! The common room is intimate and encourages people talking to each other, facilitated by excellent staff such as Salvo and others, the whole hostel is clean with comfy beds and the location is absolutely ideal. If I'm staying in Sydney and Big Hostel has availability, I'm staying here every time, no questions asked.

Comfortable bed and the room for couples is fine, they need to improve the bathroom tho or clean it properly because it has mould. It's a good place to stay short time. Our room was facing the street, so bit noisy

Big Hostel is in a really great location in the city, with bus and train routes nearby and great value of money. Staffs were friendly. I booked 4-beds dorm for female but they found that it has already full. So, they changed the room without any charge. Room was fairly good sized and totally fine. The bathroom was pretty clean and it already has everything you need such as toiletries and hair dryer. Common space has a lot of potential as well. However, the entrance room and common room were both not very well kept, from the floors to the couches to the stale, sweaty smell of the whole area. The kitchen was messy from the the overflowing dry food storage with no room for anyone to put or find anything, to the fridges which had even less space and wreaked of rotting food which likely came from the depths of someone’s bag long forgotten and never removed.

  • 2/5 Raven B. 1 year ago on Google
Pros: Big Hostel was in a really great location in the city, with bus and train routes nearby, and walking distance to Chinatown and Surry Hills, and even up to the harbor if you’re okay walking 25-30 minutes. Staff was friendly enough, had fairly minimal interaction though. Room was fairly good sized and totally fine. Common space has a lot of potential as well… Cons: The entrance room and common room were both not very well kept, from the floors to the couches to the stale, sweaty smell of the whole area. The kitchen was unfathomably rough, from the the overflowing dry food storage with no room for anyone to put or find anything, to the fridges which had even less space and wreaked of rotting food which likely came from the depths of someone’s bag long forgotten and never removed. The surfaces weren’t terrible, but both sinks were full of dirty dishes at pretty much all times which just continued the dirty cycle of people not doing their own dishes and drying them to put away I guess. Rooftop could be a nice touch however the ground was covered with cigarette ash etc. to the point where bare feet were turned black after walking around the area, and it just didn’t have a feel of a place that invited you to stay and hangout. Finally, despite there being plenty of people staying and a couple staff on site throughout the day, it felt very antisocial as far as any sort of offerings or social oriented activities that are often a part of each day at hostels. Not sure if it was just hard hit by COVID and is lacking staff and some new energy to clean the place up, but personally for the price I wouldn’t stay again unless some changes/updates were made as the space itself has so much potential.

Awesome staff, location, and room. Will coming back next time get a chance to visit here in Sydney. The best hostel I ever stayed so far when it comes to price and service.

  • 2/5 Klaas V. 1 year ago on Google
Rooms are quite big but nog ventilated as the airconditioning does not work. The beds are very old and shaky. It is clean but everything is old and outdated, everywhere there is something broken. Staff was very friendly. One of the cheaper hostels in Sydney but not worth the money in my view.

  • 1/5 Mase V. 1 year ago on Google
Very rude and condescending receptionist refused to allow me to book a room due to no other reason than not understanding my voice. (Very tired after travelling for 25 hours) And while I tried to work out the dates of my potential stay, was told: “You know what, we’re full, find somewhere else.” despite saying that 2 room types were available previously. Such a shame as the location and facilities seemed really good. Let down by shocking attitude and service at the front desk…

Really friendly staff who tried to be helpful but the bathroom was extremely dirty. Maybe the shared bunk rooms had better upkeep but I had a shared bathroom with a private room and the shared bathroom was not kept clean. The shower head was broken so water sprayed everywhere and the floor was consistently wet (the shower was an open shower). There was Q-tips and hair on the floor. The kitchen was dirty with cooked food left by guests sitting there, the kitchen and the fridge smelled extremely bad. A guest was coughing onto the water filter while getting water. And the room was extremely stuffy and hot and you can’t adjust room temperature. There were also strange guests and people who were clearly staying long term. I regularly stay at hostels, generally private rooms in hostels, and this is the worst I have seen. I ended up checking out early and going somewhere else.

It's a great place for short stays. The double ensuite, although in a hostel where people might think a quality stay is not possible, it gave me the privacy, space and a good sleep I needed. The location is amazing. I came to see Bruno Mars, and this place is walking distance from the Allianz Stadium. The 7-11 at the corner two blocks away is very handy too. The price is unreal. For the enjoyment I got, it's totally worth every penny. Staff here is friendly and helpful too.

The hostel it self is really cool. The shower’s temperature and water pressure was A+. Also Harry at the reception is cool too. As a smoker, having rooftop patio helped me a lot.
