AVOID AT ALL COSTS. When I arrived at the hostel, there was no one at the reception. So I called and called again and again. After 20 minutes someone calls me back and I start the check in via the phone, the person tells me that actually the room I had selected is not available (twin room with private bathroom), and that the solution is that they can put me in a 4-person dorm without anyone there and with a shared bathroom or that they can refund me (it was already 3pm, I couldn’t have cancelled and found an affordable alternative so late in the day). Thus, I respond that I don’t really have a choice since it’s already late, but I ask for a compensation since I paid quite some money and am not receiving anything that I ask, the person answers that he has to see with the management but that he doesn’t think there will be any compensation… How is that normal? On top of that, the bathrooms hadn’t been cleaned in a long time and were full of mold! The bedroom wasn’t clean as well and had cockroaches inside!

My stay at the Village Surry Hills was awful. This place is really falling appart. Too many things to say about basic non existing or non working equipments. It was the only reason why my stay in Sydney was not as good as I expected unfortunately. To avoid as much as possible.

THE PICTURES ARE NOT ACCURATE. THIS PLACE IS DISGUSTING. filthy, NO ventilation in the room (vent is painted over) cockroach baits on window, BEDS WERE SURELY NOT CLEANED. everything is musty. filthy. it smelt absolutely disgusting. the downstairs shared bathroom is the most disgusting mouldy room i’ve seen in my life. i booked 3 nights on booking.com - the photos looked fine - BUT THEY ARE STAGED! THE PHOTOS ARE NOTHING LIKE THE ACTUAL STATE OF THE ACCOMODATION i left within the hour… i don’t have money to spare…..but this was too horrendous to even sleep in. don’t bother. trust me.

I arrived and almost immediately left. I've stayed in hostels all over, but this was by far the dirtiest I've seen. I felt unsafe staying there, even in an all female room. The other guests made me feel ver uncomfortable. The hostel did not look like it did in the photos, there was no reception to check me in when I arrived, there is no parking anywhere near it and no elevator. I couldn't get passed how dirty it was and how unsafe I felt there, so I left and stayed in a hotel.

There are no staff here. Check in is a nightmare everything is done through apps that don't work and trap you without assistance. It's like a dystopian nightmare. Also so Unclean and beds are broken.

The worst place you would ever want to stay the night at. Fungus everywhere especially on the sheets matters and pillows. Disgusting smell in the room. I had to where mask all night. Couldn't sleep because the other person was snoring most of the time. No soap in the toilet that was supposed to be shared with other people. That is the last thing you want to miss during this pandemic.

I didn't get off to a great start here on my first night with inconsiderate folks howling like banshees in the night and it was as if I had checked into a zoo! However, Melody and the team are doing a great thing here and have looked after me well. The rooms are comfortable enough and the howling stopped after the first night thankfully. It's been nice to have an ensuite bathroom and was lucky enough to get the single bed in the room which saved me climbing up a bunkbed. The facilities are really good with fully equipped kitchen and really pleasant outdoor seating area. The location is really handy as well and it is next to a park with an outdoor pool which I didn't get around to using but is cool nonetheless. Melody is very warm and nothing is an issue for her as are the rest of the team and that is what made the difference to my stay here. The cleaners and other staff behind the scenes are also doing a great job. I noticed they take photos after completing tasks and as an eye witness they are doing a great job that doesn't need photographic evidence. So thank you to the whole team at The Village for having me.

Don't punish yourself by staying here. If it was possible to leave zero stars I would have, this has got to be the dirtiest hostel I've ever been in, the walls in the room and around the hostel were broken, there was sick and got knows what else over multiple of the share toilets, there was mould and dirt everywhere, the hallways smelled like people smoking in the rooms. And upon arrival we were stuck waiting in reception for 20 minutes and noone ever answers the phone number left for when noone is in the office. And when we asked at reception for the bags we had left in the "safe" storage room the bloke said oh you don't need a key it's open. Thank god we only stayed one night.

Wish I could give a zero star rating. All advertised facilities are fictitious and the staff are positively hostile. (That's on the unlikely chance that they're there at all.) TV room shuts at 9 pm if it has actually been opened at all. If you have fun like a normal person you will be evicted. Steer clear unless you don't like fun, meeting other people or music.

I've been staying at this hostel for about a month now, so I believe It's time to express my honest opinion about it. Overall I think the facilities are a bit worn out, kitchen utensils are old and the knives are not sharp making it hard to cut anything, lightning in the garden is lacking, especially in the ping pong table, which I enjoy playing daily. I've been to a few rooms so from my perspective they're pretty well maintained, the cleaning staff is very professional and friendly! They have free pancakes and barbecue once a week, which is a very good opportunity to socialize. Overall a decent hostel for the price and very well located, would've given 3-4 stars however I must give a special shout out to 2 of the receptionists, Paula and Gabriel, they have been absolute gems! Both of them sorted every little inconvenience I and my roommates have had so far. I perceive both as very professional and friendly individuals, always keeping high standards when it comes to customer service and going out of their way to make sure all the guests are happy! That being said, if you come to Sydney, definitely give this hostel a go, you won't regret it!

I have paid an enormous price for 3 nights to spend NYE in Sydney in this hostel and the experience was definitely not worth the price. For the positive, clean and spacious kitchen, individual bathroom in each dorm, good location… that’s it. For the negative, dirty bathroom with no shelf to leave your clothes and products, extremely noisy fans, sun wakes you up at 7 because the curtains are almost useless, and the most annoying point, the kitchen seemed to be out of power at 8 pm one evening, no plug was working so I couldn’t use the microwave, the toaster or the kettle, and all of the gas stoves didn’t work either. I tried to call the hostel 7 times but they were on the line, I knocked at the reception which was obviously closed and I finally sent them a message via the Goki app and I got an answer an hour later. For the price I paid, I would have excepted a way faster answer. With the money this hostel is making during Christmas and NYE this is such an inacceptable experience.

My partner and I booked this place and after walking in and being treated poorly my staff upon arrival we left and booked another hotel. Upon entry the place smelled of mould and just stale air which already was disconcerting. When reaching the reception desk we were forced to get the receptionists attention and even then where treated horribly. We were wanting to check in at the time we had indicted with them we would only to be told we couldn't check in and being told our room isn't ready without even asking for names or any details. Worse experience and we left with all stuff went elsewhere.

at first I stayed in a room with 3 more people, who unfortunately didn't obey the rules and made noise until late. with the help of the reception staff (Julietta and another Frenchwoman who I don't remember her name) I managed to upgrade and went to another room.. the rooms are organized.. the cleaning is done almost daily, the people who they work at the hostel are friendly and are willing to help whenever they can, very polite…compared to the other hostels I stayed at this one is very good… unfortunately the negative part is due to the noise and mess that other travelers make.. maybe if had better control coming from the staff working at the hostel would be better! thanks again to julietta and the other french receptionist.. they helped me a lot when i needed it…

First of all, according to the building you are, you will not have signal. Also, be carefull, this hostel is very (too) strict. Drinking alcohol is not allowed. The TV room closes early (10-10:30pm). It is also very easy to be kicked out and you won't have a decent notice, no second chance. It is customary to give you notice the night before for the next morning, even on a Sunday night. It also happens that you get fired the D-day for the evening. The reasons given are often exaggerated: having stayed too long in the TV room, having had a glass of wine several nights. You will also be monitored by cameras. Be careful not to bring anyone from outside. Otherwise, the security guard will not hesitate to enter your room at 4am with a flash to wake you up. You will be excluded, of course, with lies and extrapolation of your actions. A little dishonest... Otherwise, the cleaning is well done and the outside areas are nice. The location is not that bad.

My second time to be in a hostel. The previous hostel i was with provided a towel for a $2 fee. I arrived at this hostel as early a 11am. I know its too early to check in but I offered the check in agent to take my info so that she (Paula) don't need to do it when I come back at around 6pm after i go for a day to Manly beach. She said that its too early to check in. She was kind enough to let me leave my backpack though. I came back at past 5pm and they were in the middle of shift changing. Counting coins and more coins. It took me more than 30mins waiting for them to be done and get checked in. They were apologetic though.. that after your long day, its annoying. They could have been more productive. The system to open the door is a little bit high tech. You need to Download an app called GOKI Not mentioned on their emails and on the website. NO TOWEL I was in a shared room and if you don't have a towel, you mind your own problem! They don't provide. They don't care. Initially, when I was checking in, I asked if i can rent a towel. Pauline told me to come as she was cheking in few other people behind me. I came back at around 8pm. The gentleman on the check in told me that they don't provide towels for shared accomodation. (Pauline was beside him. She was the one who told me to comeback) I told him that I am looking to rent. And he told me that they don't do it unless you are i a private room. I was told initially to come back to rent one.. and now its 8pm.. this gentleman is telling me to go buy, "its only 3$" that i have to have my own towel and they don't provide. No towels. How would you take a shower? Maybe use you sheets and pillow cases?!! 😳 It's good that I only booked one day for this hostel. Very disappointing experience. Very bad customer service

I've been staying in a 4 bedroom and it has a great space and the best thing of the room is having a private toilet. The atmosphere of the hostel is amazing, you can really make good friends here and have a good time chilling in the resting areas. I really wish to thanks Paula and Gabriel for their great work and hospitality with me and my friends, they are always ready to help and also very friendly with everybody.

I've been in the village two months. Rooms: some are very big, others small, some have a bathroom, some don't. It's a bit random but some rooms are very good. The rooms are almost always clean. Kitchen: it's cleaned regularly. There's space for food and good pots and pan and plenty of cutlery. No oven though. The fridges are definitely too small which makes them hard to clean and are often a bit dirty and a smelly but not more than the average hostel. Staff: I understand why some people complain, they might not be super friendly, but if you are respectful with the staff, they will be nice to you. Just remember they have to deal with a lot of crazy people. Washing machines are honestly the worst thing. 5 dollars wash and 5 dry. The washing machine sometimes leaves clothes dirtier than before and the dryer sometimes takes two times to get clothes actually dry. They just try to profit as much because they know people are lazy and won't go outside the hostel to clean Thier clothes Location: Perfect. Close to central, the park outside the hostel is nice, there are pull up bars and basketball hoops. It's not far from Paddy's market, Woolworths is ten minutes walk. Cons: sometimes big groups of students come in the hostel and the staff will ask you to move room and it's quite boring. Overall it's a good place, not noisy at night. Sometimes there's many backpackers, other times there's nobody and it's quite boring. Most guests are friendly and I made quite a few friends.

The price is good but the place is not. Despite you have a low price a minimum of maintenance is mandatory. When we entry to the room the toilet was dirty and there were plenty of cockroaches. Mould in the mattress. The duvet was also with mould and plenty of stains. We don’t recommend the place.

Unfortunately, we did not have good experience here. I'm not one to leave bad reviews often but I thought this may help someone else. 1- We arrived at midday and were told that check in was at 2 pm, so we agreed to leave the bags and return. When we returned at 2:15 pm, we were told the room was still not ready because there was no linen and were asked to wait. We waited until 3:15 and decided to go to reception again... after a short wait, we were told we could check in. When we went to the property (there are two separate buildings), the staff there told us the room wasn't ready and asked us to wait again. After 20 minutes, we decided to go find the room, as no one had come find us. It was very frustrating because there were no signs showing where the room was, so we had to ask people around as signs only showed rooms 1-44 and there was a whole separate set of rooms with no signage... -When we finally found the room and it was "ready", we discovered that they'd given us a room with one double bed as opposed to two twin beds. I went to explain the situation at reception and showed Agoda's voucher stating that we'd booked a "standard room" (not double) and selected the twin beds option. The staff said they never received such request (I had a copy of the voucher) and advised they were fully booked and couldn't do anything about. Since it was so last minute and given the cost of accommodation in Sydney, we were left with no option but to share the bed for four days. We requested a spare foldable bed but were told that was not an option either. -Over the course of our four-day stay, we saw and killed at least 4/5 cockroaches in the room. -There are many working holiday backpackers living in the hostel, so there is a lot of noise and chaos around all the time, including group drinking and conversations until 4 am which can be heard from the rooms. Overall, it felt very chaotic and poorly managed, which is disappointing since the hostel is well-located and the premises could be good if well kept. I wouldn't return or recommend it to others.

I've been staying in Backpackers in Oz for about 4 years now and this was one of the worst experiences I've had. The room was a mess, I had to step on a box one metre away from the bed to climb on the bunk. The English people in my room were drunk and loud, came in and out of the room all night, slamming doors, lights on, and talking and singing on top of it. The girl at the reception was very apologetic. I understand it's a hostel, but this was too much. These beds go for 50$ a night. 50$ (!), not 15$ - which is how much is really worth. I don't recommend.

I arrived here with a four night booking on 26 November. I handed my passport over to check in and was quickly told that I was too old to stay there. The first time in life I was refused accomodations. The receptionist said there was nothing she could do. The manager came in and said it is the rules of the hostel. She refused to show them. In fact she even refused to look at my booking which I made via Expedia. I told there was no mention of any 18-35 restriction. Totally incompetent and a brush off attitude from the get go.They said I would get a refund.. I didn't get it so I had to call Expedia and they made them give a refund. So folks avoid this place run by careless staff. After this fiasco I went to the Village Hostels website and this HUGELY RESTRICTIVE policy is nowhere PROMINENTLY only a tiny lettered mention very far into the booking process.

My overall stay at the Village has been pretty alright. Staff is helpful and tries to resolve issues as quick as they could, whilst they do as much as they could to manage an influx of tourists and backpackers everyday, sometimes, we, as guests, should also try to keep the property clean with less mess around. Also, I found rooms not so very clean, but can’t complain too much with this price in Surry Hills.

Last minute booking due to a flight cancellation. Location was good & staff were helpful and friendly. Amenities were okay, bathrooms weren’t super clean but to be expected in a hostel. The dorm room was clean and had A/C. I would have given a higher rating if not for the price. $200 for one night in a shared dorm with 6 people is extremely overpriced in my opinion.

Rooms are nice and not too cramped, air con is a blessing, kitchen is big and there’s nice outdoor areas to sit and work. Good mix of chilled and social, great hostel considering it’s a lot cheaper than most others - Big shout out to Mèlodie on the front desk! She’s so helpful anytime I have an issue with anything and even went out of her way to rearrange my booking when I wanted to change room!

I had a decent stay at this hostel in Sydney. The location was convenient, and the staff member Esma was exceptionally friendly and helpful. However, the facilities were somewhat dated, and the cleanliness could have been better. Overall, a satisfactory experience but room for improvement.

Had a really nice experience staying at Village. The staff here were friendly and helpful. Bea was very kind and even offered to help with my suitcase up many flights of stairs. It’s got lots of social areas so it’s easy to meet new people and 2 kitchens so plenty of space for cooking. Def recommend this place.

Got locked out of my room, the card stopped working. The bathrooms were gross, mouldy grout, handles missing on cupboards in bathroom. Fridges smelt like off food. The only positive was that it was close to where I had to be the next day a d I met 2 nice people who I chatted with most of my stay, just one night there.

I went to see the place today at noon. I wanted to meet him before staying ... he is not as cute as it looks in the photos they publish. It is old and not very neat .. I could not know much about the place because the woman who attended me said to come back when I wanted to stay .. It was when I explained that I wanted to see the place .. and I asked if she could please show me the kitchen on laundry..something..spaces in common. she didn't seem very happy with what I requested.

I wouldn’t even give this place 1 star, however i would strongly recommend not staying here if you are looking for cheap accomodation. my friend and I had just finished a 9 hour drive from victoria and when we got to the venue they had cancelled our booking and not informed us of this. we then had to book another place to stay, as we were stranded in sydney on our own. When we contacted them the next morning the lady we spoke to was rude and continued to blame us that we didn’t call and provide them with any information about our booking. I advised that we had called when we initially left victoria to let them know that we were going to check in late, and whoever we spoke to said that was fine and did not ask for further details. She did not let me speak to anybody else as I had asked to speak to management. She advised that she was the only person that we could speak to and continued to say that it was our fault. Rude Lady and discusting service!

If you want to ruin your stay in Australia, this really is the place to do it! Where to start ? The French staff (Emre) is catastrophically professional, he tried several times to hit on me with very inappropriate sexist comments, I felt followed by this person and I was afraid to cross him, really be careful! The rooms are small and if you like good company cockroaches and mice will be there. Really to flee

The WORST hostel we have ever stayed in. The staff are no where to be found. I’m not even sure the ‘Manager’ Diego is real! After staying here I got Bed Bugs. Clarified by medical professionals. I have contacted reception 4 times, called twice emailed a handful of times and still no response. No one wanted to give me a fresh bed. I had to find a new bed in the hostel with clean bedding to make sure I got no more bites. Would recommend you never stayed here and saved your money on a place to stay and then medication you have to buy! Also so unsociable!

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT F@CKIN STAY!!!!! Can’t give zero stars but i would if i could Seriously disgusting hostel rooms, filthy dirty bathrooms and toilets shared by Way too many people. Pigeons on the kitchen table (and not in a Nice Disney movie kind of Way). Was supposed to stay for 6 night but after the first night i booked another place to stay. As a female traveller This place isn’t safe. The men are extremely wierd, either from drugs og just kind of incel like. The receptionist was very helpful and understanding about the situation but I get the feeling that nothing Will change. S Do yourself a favor and Spend your Money elsewhere.

I recently stayed at the village and had few issues with its infrastructure, but these were more than made up for by the exceptional customer service provided by Paula and Gabriel. Firstly, the kitchen was not well-equipped, with a lack of tables and cooking utensils which made it challenging to prepare meals. This was particularly frustrating during peak times when the kitchen was crowded. The pingpong table, which was located outside under a roof, was also problematic, as it didn't have any lights, making it impossible to play after dark. Furthermore, when it rained, water dripped through the roof, making the common area unusable during wet weather. Despite these issues, Paula and Gabriel, were incredible. They were warm, friendly, and went above and beyond to make sure that my stay was enjoyable. They provided me with plenty of information about the hostel and the surrounding area, and were always on hand to answer any questions I had. Their exceptional customer service really made me feel welcome and at home.

They saved my nights and gave me the best time in Sydney. Cool and chill place to relax. The people was so nice with me. Open and clean areas, friendly staff (Paula is incredible!!!), daily room cleaning. Many transport options around, the big park front of hostel, bringing more air fresh. Thanks a lot guys. Miss you so much ❤️

Great hostel! We even had a shower and toilet in our 12 person dorm. Too expensive, in my opinion, although I am new in town. I shouldn't be paying $38/night or $266/week to live in a room with other ppl. Plenty of rooms in share houses in town for same price. Great kitchen. And the whole hostel is clean and well organized. Amazing staff. Shout out to Janet who is super nice, hard working, and always happy to talk about rugby ❤️. Vinaka Janet! Also thank you to the lovely Kay at reception, who always had time for my questions and shameless compliments. Last but not least, Paula was a true gem who never sleeps it seems as she is always working and happy to help you with anything you might want. The staff would be the reason for my return. They truly make the experience.

This place is wonderful! Between the location, rooms, and common areas, I’d rate this as one of the top hostels in Sydney. The staff are also exceptional. Gabriel helped me immensely with local recommendations, and really made me feel welcome! Thanks for a wonderful stay! ❤️

Great atmosphere: The inner court, on the left building, is phenomenal and makes connecting with others easy. My 4 bed room was great also with a comfortably-sized shower. Cleanliness was a-ok for a hostel. Staff was very professional and reacted to any disturbances with the corrected measures, to which I attribute the fact that creeps and troublemakers are no issue here. I hope this is kept up. Should not be overdone though as individuals should be allowed in my view to express themselves with only the most critical constraints. So, thanks for a great stay at Paula & the other team members.

This place Is up there with one of the worst places I have stayed at. On arrival (after asking for early check in due to work) I had to check in online, no issue with having too but it's a long process, after checking in I had to download an app for the room keys (while the app is easy to use) its really bad if your phone is flat cause you can't access rooms and building's. But I couldn't get access to the keys and access to the buldings, and thus I was left waiting for reception or where it was for 15 minutes (tried calling to find out where reception was with no answer) when I finally found out where it was it was in the building 2 doors down with no external sign to say where it was. On arrival to reception there was no one there and when someone did arrive, the staff member was helpful. Got the early check in (30 minutes later) then finally got in the room. Really tiny room barely room between the 2 bunk beds in the room and the storage boxes under the bed are a terrible idea as they are load in the middle of the night to pull out as well as being heavy after loading your bags in it. The room was dirty, window cracked, room was smelly, bathrooms dirty, with mould on the walls, broken shower heads in some of the showers. No toilet paper in toilets and sinks dirty. Beds are rusty so was worried the bed would break. Balcony near room has signs all over it stating no smoking and yet people do. If you check out late they charge you $10. They don't even give the guests a sheet, you only get a fitted sheet and a quilt and cover with a pillow and cover. Room cold no spare quilts or covers. I would never ever stay in the place ever again.

A great Hostel at a good location close to public transport. Google navigation took me to the backdoor though, and i almost missed the checkin time and could have ended up on the street for that day though, they should get that corrected, so if you book the main entrance is just opposit to the park. It is occupied by alot of young travellers, but they treated the place very nice. There could be done more regarding cleaning. When so many people (12) is staying in one place they need to focus more on that.

About average for a hostel. Not outstandingly good, not outstandingly bad. !!! Big kudos for the clean beds. I often get allergy issues, even in 3-star hotels. !!! Unfortunately the hostel is on a major road, meaning I woke up early from traffic noise and had trouble falling asleep. There are also a few things in disrepair (one shower-head is broken, no WiFi in the lounge room, ...)

the receptionist is really aggressive and behaves as if she is doing you a favor not as if she is providing you with a service. no one helps to check in and some customers have to pay in other hostels or sleep on the street waiting to be served. the lady is a total Karen, it is definitely not a place recommended for tourists when there are others where they are totally friendly. someone should report the receptionist to the police for verbal assault

honestly loved this hostel. all the staff i interacted with were very helpful and professional, and the other guests were generally kind and welcoming. our private double room had lockers and a mini fridge which was phenomenal honestly. it’s also very close to public transport stations which was awesome. great place.

Good hostel with nice communal vibes. The hostel is split between two buildings and the side I was in good for hanging around and meeting people over $7 wine. No bar on site but Staff were great, free events all week like BBQ and salsa classes. Reception staff were great especially Kim! Housekeeping staff actually cleaned the room everyday. Would come again

A smooth and highly pleasant costumer service experience huge Thanks to Melody from the front desk. After my checkout day I couldn’t find my keys and backpack for days so I decided to go back to the hostel and check it. Melody was super helpful and took me up to the room and allowed me to have a look with her. And Yess! It was still at the exact spot on the ground where I left it days ago with my keys. 🥳
