The hostel is the worst I’ve ever stayed in. The price is definitely not worth it and it wasn’t possible to stay more than one night. At first it seemed fine because the staff at the reception was quite friendly but when we went upstairs to our room the temperature in there was about 30 degrees C and it smelled like a restaurant kitchen. Later on we were also surprised by cockroaches in our room. In addition to that only one bathroom on 4 floors was close to being clean and the window in our room was broken and “fixed” with plastic bags. Our roommates were also really weird and one of them offered us to taste HIS protein and we just didn’t feel comfortable at all. When we tried to get our money back they weren’t understanding at all so we didn’t even get our money back.

The staff were lovely and the people friendly, but that was the only upside. The cheap room prices do not make up for the level of dirt and grime in the bathrooms, toilet and bedrooms. There was mold on the ceiling in the bathrooms due to inadequate ventilation and drainage, and one of the toilets didn’t have a flush button (you had to reach down into the cistern to press it, which I refused to do). I didn’t go upstairs to the kitchen because I figured it would also be filthy, and I couldn’t bring myself to shower in the disgusting bathrooms. I ended up checking out a day early. I’ve stayed in lots of hostels before, and this is definitely one of the worst. I feel bad for the staff, they obviously aren’t paid enough and you would need a much bigger crew to keep that place regularly cleaned. Whoever owns the hostel should be ashamed of how badly they’re running the place. On my way out I even overheard a guy on the phone saying ‘I can’t live like this anymore’. Staying at Sydney Backpackers is definitely a last resort.

Very much different if u stay in backpackers in Japan. I’ve stay in a room of 7bed up and down a total of 14 people in one room and woman and man are in same room. People in my room are all nice but I guess some of them already stayed there for a long time that’s why the room become cluttered and it needs to be clean. They have room lockers but u must have your own locked to use it. The Shower room and toilet are always wet, as expected for a room of 14 people. TV room, kitchen and laundry as expected not clean and the fridge is full on.. As for staff their are nice, I felt bad coz I know it’s hard to maintain a place if you have a full on people.

Definitely the worst hostel I have ever stayed at. Better to just lay down outside at any railway station. That would surely be safer, less noisier and a lot cleaner.

Do not recommend to anyone no matter how desperate you are. We booked our room in advance for 4 nights but ended up getting kicked out on the morning of the 3rd day, told that we hadn't booked it and that someone was already going to come into our room to stay and lied about being over booked even though we had already booked it and just got kicked out! Not only that but the beds were disgusting with red stains all over and the bathrooms were unsanitary with a very run down look, as well as the staff and guests being very loud in the middle of the night. The vibe of the place was very stetchy as well as them needing to scan our passports to get our room. 0/5

WORST HOSTEL EVER! Do not stay here. This is honestly the worst hostel i've ever stayed in. I got a volunteer job here in exchange for accommodation. I started on a trial shift to see how I liked it and soon realised I would not be able to stand another night here. The only thing this place has going for it is the location. However, if you want basic sanitation, you won't find it here. Bathrooms are disgusting and old. Broken taps, toilets and shower doors are just the beginning. The rooms are tiny and the windows block out no sound whatsoever. The wifi doesn't work at all so be prepared to use all your data. Staff are extremely unhelpful and rude. When I told the manager I decided to leave and didn't want the job, he told me he would tell all other partner hostel's not to hire me because I was unreliable. This place shouldn't even be allowed to call themselves a hostel, especially for the price and what you receive. Please save your money and go somewhere else!

Don’t stay here. Splash out and spend $30 more on something slightly less dank. Subpar experience from the start. No parking anywhere. Key card repeatedly wouldn’t work. Room was like a cellar, stained sheets and got bitten by mites all night. No air conditioning and the windows opened out onto a dirty dark alley full of people swearing and yelling until 4am. Don’t let anything fall on the bathroom floors or you’ll have to burn it. Got charged twice for our stay -$ 54 through the booking site and then $72 when we got there- instead of just being charged the $20 “ key deposit” on arrival. Luckily the staff today were far more helpful and refunded the extra $72 that should never have been charged. Whole place is very unappealing. Can’t recommend

As others have said, the location is very good. However, the bathrooms are dirty and literally always wet and on the ground (even just the toilets??) We couldn't even get warm water for a shower on our floor. The wifi doesn't work at all. They clean the bathrooms with bleach and it literally ruined our sweaters and dark colored shirts. We got NO compensation at all. Not happy with this hostel.

Please don’t stay here, we had stayed in there for one night and it was a disaster!! Bedbugs and mites infested, my partner is still trying to recover from the mites. It was very creepy, the bathrooms are dirty and small, and looked like something out of a horror movie!! The building itself is creepy and we felt unsafe the whole time, it had a really bad vibe about the whole place.

For a few $ more you can stay somewhere fair, clean and most importantly SAFE. Strange place really, location is great, I lived and worked there for a few months and for the most part it was okay I met some good friends there. But there were a lot of downsides. Overall cleanliness was average. I had 2 brand new bags of groceries thrown out because management failed to assign my name to a room on the check sheet. Management also pick and choose who to bend the rules and policies for, be prepared for the managers and their selected friends to sit and watch you on CCTV at reception with no regard for GDPR, recording the CCTV with their phones and sending the footage around between themselves. Also a lot of strange characters allowed to stay in the hostel (druggies, alcoholics) despite it being ‘against policy’, because they’re ‘friends’ of management. I actually got kicked out myself for getting into a fight with one of the other guests who was touching a few of the females inappropriately at a party. The ‘night warden/security’ ignored the multiple complaints from the girls. Fair enough fighting is against policy however one of the managers friends have just been allowed back in despite being in trouble for fighting a few weeks prior - doesn’t come as a surprise. For me I felt safe personally, but I wouldn’t feel it was safe for my sister or my girlfriend to stay there alone.

if i could give this place zero stars, i would. it rained tonight and now the ceiling in our room is leaking in three different places (including right over one of the six beds) and we have had to use cups and bins to try and keep the water from contaminating everything. and, i say CONTAMINATING, because the water literally is yellow and looks like pee. the bathrooms are absolutely the disgusting, the taps are barely even attached to the sinks. you can’t even shower here unless you PAY $7 for a towel, which i honestly wouldn’t even want to use just looking at the state of cleanliness of every other aspect of the place. my duvet was so full of random people’s hair that i literally couldn’t use it because it was so disgusting. so on top of having water dripping on top of me all night, i’m freezing cold because their “hygienic linen pack” is genuinely the least clean i’ve EVER experienced at a hostel. i genuinely would not recommend this place at all. we’re supposed to be staying here another night but i literally don’t think we’ll be able to

    * Filthy bathrooms. All of them were not well attended. There were chunks of hairs at bath drains, etc. * Tiny bathrooms. If your body size are average or above, don’t book here. You won’t be able to close the doors if you get in. Well yes it is still possible if you use great finesse but it is awkward and silly. * The staff are not always friendly. * This is not a “welcome no matter your age” place. I think there is a sign in the ground floor saying by policy they don’t have to take people over 30 years old. Not the exact words. Might be 35 as well.

Stayed in this hostel for 3 weeks. It is perfectly located at Town Hall for easy access anywhere in Sydney. Staff is incredibly nice and helpfull. They are working hard to improve the hostel and it shows. Great vibes, feels like home. Will definitely come back!

It's a good location and it's cheap. But I had a remarkable interaction with the young British woman at reception when checking out: Me (clearly in a rush): Just checking out thanks. Her: Okay, your key deposit was paid by C/C, I'll refund onto the card. Me: It was paid by cash. But fine whatever. H: Computer says laid by card, therefore it was paid by card. M: 100% it was cash. But I don't care I'm in a rush. Just refund it on card. H: Have patience with me while I check. [Minutes go by] It says paid by card. M: Like I said, don't care, I don't want to miss my flight. H: I have to refund how it was paid, you're adamant it was paid by cash so I can't refund onto the card. M: Then give me cash I don't care. H: But the computer says it was paid by card. M: I don't care about this at all. I don't want to miss my flight. [takes back credit card. Leaves]. And that ladies and gentlemen is thd story of how Sydney Backpackers came to owe me $20.

This hostel is old but still keeps it clean. They are trying to do some art on old walls to make them more beautiful. The receptionist is very friendly. Their bed is very comfortable, but there are yellow stains on the wall in some rooms, looks not very good. If they can fix it , that will be better. The kitchen area and shower room also are clean too. It's an economic price hostel but still can be better.

Dirty bathrooms, dirty kitchen, housekeeping cleaning for 1 hour at 11 pm so we had to wait to use the bathrooms for going to sleep, they clean the rooms really bad. Reception good attention. Good location for vacations.

Stay as far away as possible from this hostel. It is not just DIRTY, it is unlivable and overpriced. I had the luck that the reception lady made an error and gave me a 50% discount, which was the only reason I stayed but to be honest it is not even worth half the price. The bathrooms are horribly disguting, the location is nosy and the beds are uncomfortable. I was afraid I would get a disease while living here. I would not reccommend it to anyone. Please dont give this place any money.

Basically, you get what you pay for. Super convinient location but alley way was so loud with foot traffic and cars throughout the night we could barely sleep. Toilets blocked up and big wait times for showers. Staff were great though.

  • 3/5 georgia h. 11 months ago on Google
Staff were helpful and approachable. Rooms were dirty and very compact but for the price it is hard to complain. The bathrooms were the dirtiest part of the hostel but very much usable. Kitchen was nice and clean, rooftop was a nice positive and the burgers and tacos were lovely and free 😍. Would recommend staying here if you aren’t to bothered about cleanliness but like a good bargain.

At the start when I came it was falsely advertised that guests are between 18-35 Yet most of the guests were old creepy men. The hostel has a very depressing vibe and feels like prison. Most patrons here have lived a while and act like they are soulless. The first room I went into had insane aggressive people who slept and turned the lights of at 7pm. The hostel toilets are very dirty on the first and second floor but maintained on 3rd and 4th floor. Also the Hostel had really horrible smell and has no air conditioning so It felt like I was melting. The staff is not really helpful and feels like dead and soulless as well. I had booked here for 1 week but I got out in 2 days and can not imagine living any further in this hostel. Wakeup hostel is like a heaven compared to this.

It's much dirtier than the official photos. The building itself is quite old and the elevator is quite slow moving But the location is nice. I don't recommend it.

Newcomers please read the reviews before booking your stay. The staff are here and trained to steal your money. Especially Naomi who acts nice but is as fake as fake can be. She will say: "Once you've checked out and continued your tour elsewhere (how convenient) we will refund your credit card". Doesn't take a genius to work out this is a scam. Disgusting. Mold and cockroach everywhere.

Excellent value, great location and friendly people. It’s not 5 star but you’re not paying 5 star. Excellent value for money. Comfy bed, good size kitchen, plenty of toilets and showers. Back in a couple of weeks.

I stayed at sydney backpackers for 1 week and was NOT DISSAPOINTED! Naomi, gabi and khrei, the friendly staff of this hostel assisted me into a clean and safe room with very friendly people. For 25 dollars a night I could never be disappointed, I made some great mates along the way and was able to live cheap. It was definately worth the stay and highly recommend staying at the sydney backpackers hostel.

My shoes and my underwear was stolen. Low standard of living. Even midnight so noisy inside and outside. Many cockroaches. Dirty… It’s good for travelers who just want to save money. And you can go middle of city by walking. Thanks.

For an affordable hostel the beds are surprisingly comfy. Friendly and helpful reception with a decent atmosphere. Nice view from the rooftop and plenty of facilities available.

It gets the job done, but the maintenance is terrible. Looking at the old pictures on the site it's remarkable how far it's come. The bathrooms/showers were kinda rough and the bunkroom was like 30°C+. Linens overflowing, card reader down, dirty in general. But like I said it got the job done.

  • 1/5 Luke W. 2 years ago on Google
Location is good. Staff is useless. Facilities unclean and rundown. Definitely needs a renovation, or at least a handyman. Broken sinks, leaky taps, smelly toilets, falling plaster, mould in bathrooms, exposed electricity wires, etc Also tends to draw the wrong crowd. Avoid.

Very dirty. Very noisy. We have to pay a $20 deposit for the key to the room, to be reimbursed for the $20 we have to send an email with our bank information. 2 months later and 5 emails later, they still haven't refunded me. They don't respond to emails

I booked for 7 days, I ESCAPE after 2 days.. TERRIBLE, cockroaches everywhere, dirty, smelly and expensive place, better to spend 10$ more per night and go to a safer place. incompetent managers, who ask to leave good reviews to all guests .. now I understand why .. I would not recommend it even to my worst enemy ..

I have never stayed in a hostel before, I usually do an Airbnb for holidays but thought I’d save a few bucks by choosing a hostel stay for 3-4 days. I was surprised how clean the place was, really good staff members and very helpful. The location is in the heart of Sydney CBD so best place for someone wanting to explore the city!

  • 1/5 Andreas M. 1 year ago on Google
Only had to kill a couple of roaches and the air conditioning was just barely louder than a leaf blower + the receptionist was kinda nice. Would give 5 stars if I could!

  • 4/5 Λŋŋa 3 years ago on Google
chose the hostel because they promoted to have early check-ins, so I chose my check-in for 7am but I had to wait until 9. After a night in the bus, which is not the comfiest way to travel I was tired and exhausted and accordingly angry. BUT after I told the terribly nice woman at the reception about the misunderstanding she promised me to troubleshoot,so she gave me a free upgrade. About the hostel: Contrary to expectations my room is clean and also the bathroom is quite okay. For the price it's definately worth it and I would come back for a check-in after 2pm...

Stay was okay. It did become more pricy within a few weeks. Hardworking, studious and polite society beware. False rumours and gossip can be virally communicated. Reputations and talents destroyed or damaged. The hostel or accommodation may be okay to stay but the location and the people living in the vicinity can be horrific for the unsuspecting victim. Hence, hostel is okay to stay when compared to sleeping out on the street with a sleeping bag but maybe not the suburban area.

  • 1/5 Moe A. 1 year ago on Google
The rooms were small, smelly and very dim (lack of natural light). The blond receptionist was very impatient but the brunette girl at the night shift and all the men were very approachable. There are people who clean the washroom but with the number of people staying in is not enough. There was a key deposit of $20, they said they will give it back after I leave. It was always loud and you cannot sleep well!

  • 1/5 Andrew R. 1 year ago on Google
Their policy is to require credit card details. Read the reviews and I wouldn't blame anyone if they were planning to stay here and shivering in their boots. They will scam and steal your money.

  • 1/5 Dana A. 1 year ago on Google
The worst hostel I have ever been to !! I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go there! Nothing is good ! The toilets are disgusting the rooms bad , people party until 5 am and it’s so loud, an awful experience, it’s just absolutely horrible

  • 4/5 Hobart D. 1 year ago on Google
Paid $90 or so a night for a 14 person dorm during Mardi Gras which is understandable given how busy Sydney is, but I still think it is almost unethical to charge that much for a hostel like this. That said, it’s a decent hostel. Plenty of bathrooms, good staff and beds, decent kitchen. It didn’t seem particularly dirty. Really no different to other mainstream hostels in syd and I would stay again

I recently stayed at Sydney Backpacker and had a wonderful experience! The hostel is centrally located with easy access to public transportation and attractions. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the facilities were mostly clean. I especially enjoyed the social atmosphere and met some great fellow travelers during my stay. Additionally, the event manager is wonderful and organizes fantastic activities for guests. Overall, I highly recommend Sydney Backpacker for anyone looking for a budget-friendly and enjoyable accommodation option in Sydney.

Opted for a long stay at Sydney Backpackers after initially booking a 4 night stay. Good hostel, location and atmosphere, the staff are always friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious, have individual lockers and are constantly kept clean by the staff. The hostel itself is very social, with themed nights, a cinema room and events :)

This hostel is amazing. In such a great location with everything you need right on your doorstep. The light rail/underground is a 2 min walk round the corner. Also some great bars and places to eat a short walk away. The hostel itself is sociable and there’s a free event every night from free bbq’s to movie nights. Kiki and her team are also amazing and go above and beyond to keep the place tidy. They try their best to help you out wherever they can. Would 100% recommend staying here
