Top line: the dirtiest hostel with the worst amenities in Australia but friendly staff. We have been travelling the East Coast over the past couple months and this was also our 3rd hostel in Sydney and I can honestly say it's the worst one we've been in. The place stunk upon arrival, covered up by car air fresheners!? There was no air con in our room, which felt like a sauna and the pillows were flat as pancakes. We had to create comfort by using our clothes/towels. We found many a cockroach dead and alive, which was dealt quickly by the hostel but there definitely is an infestation as I haven't experienced this in any other place we've stayed in... Onto the amenities: there was one working shower in the B side for the entirety of our stay. This was filthy - probably due to the amount of people using it. The toilets were awful, with flies in the hand wash. The kitchen was so tiny for the amount of people that lived there and very dirty. Someone had written on the mesh on the kitchen window 'Clean me' a few times as it was pure dust and grease. There was also only one washer and tumble dryer in the hostel, forcing us to use the laundrette next door which was very busy. For the price we paid we have certainly stayed in much nicer places. The location is great but it is the rougher end of town.

From the moment we arrived the whole hostel has a weird smell to it. Reaching our room we found 4 dead cockroaches around the bin and under the beds, which i admit is great that they were dead, not great that they hadn’t been cleaned away. Following this we found a live one and let the staff know. They quickly agreed to sort it the following morning which was great! They used a non toxic spray on the carpet around the walls and we soon realised this is where the gross smell was coming from (despite every effort being made to cover this up with sickly sweet car airfreshners in every single room, bathroom and common area). On top if this there is no air-con, just a tiny fan on the wall so the room was unbearably hot all the time, the door didn’t lock from the inside, the pillows made two of us ill (we were fine once we ditched them) the soap in the bathroom was full of dead flies because it didn’t have a lid, the kitchen was dirty and rusty and someone had written ‘clean me’ about 4 times in the window mesh. The one time i used the tv room i had to brush a whole biscuit packet of crumbs off before i could sit down on the sofa. Stayed in a lot of hostels in Oz, and this is one of the worst. ...Location is pretty good but there are better bangs for your buck elsewhere.

Cockroach ridden hostel that time forgot. Feels like it has never had a decent clean and has a constant musty/chemical odour that seeps into any clothes left hanging in the room. It appears they try to cover up this odour with car air fresheners instead of finding whatever is causing the smell and changing the carpets?! We found multiple cockroaches in our room on the first day, and in fairness reception quickly arranged to have the carpet sprayed the following day. However we still saw cockroaches around the building over the days following. My friend and I couldn’t sleep on the pillows because I would get an itchy throat and cough every night. And I would always experience an extremely sore throat, finding it difficult to swallow whenever I spent an extended period in the room. And I cannot even bring myself to photograph the back of the curtain in our room. Plus the tiny fans in the room left us sweltering in the night and hot, bothered and sweaty come morning. The only upside is that the reception staff are nice and try to help, but there’s only so much they can do when the building is like this. One day there was only 1 working shower serving 3 floors so I had to leave the building to shower and get ready at the gym 1/2 a mile away. When I came back there were still people waiting to go in. The soap dispensers had no lids on them so flies and moths would repeatedly land inside them and (this is hilarious) instead of emptying the soap or fixing a lid, they’d just pour more soap on top of the flies! The tiny kitchen was filthy. From the sticky utensils to the lower metal section holding all the pots and pans which was so rusty I actually mistook it for wood to the grubby mesh window cover protecting the kitchen from the roof outside which had faint letters reading “clean clean clean”. We were ready to leave on the very first day and had other accommodation been available over the NY period, we would have left immediately. I’ve stayed in some questionable places over the years, I’m not afraid of a little back to basics living but this was off the charts disgusting and is not what you expect from a hostel no matter where in the world you are. I’m so shocked this place is still running and feel sorry for the staff who I imagine have to deal with endless complaints. Just a vile few days. I think this place should be gutted, doused with bleach and refitted before people are allowed to stay here.

Small cosy hostel in the heart of Sydney. The room rate is very reasonable priced for the location. The hostel is in a older historical building. The rooms and common areas bl are clean and the staff is very friendly and helpful. They also have free pizza night and on weekends they offer free pancake breakfast. Definitely can recommend.

Just an awful place to stay !! If the price is so low it's because it 's terrible ! The kitchen is ridiculously small for a hostel of this size and just disgusting. We never cooked there because it was always dirty and sticky. The bathrooms are really dirty as well. Now to the rooms... I don't know if the worst part of it was the smell, the lack of cleanliness or the mattresses which kills your whole body because of the springs !! Also there is no nice place to chill or to eat. On the pictures you have the feeling that there is a nice rooftop but actually it is just a path between the 2 buildings. The tv room, the only place to eat and chill is always dirty as well. Backpackers, avoid this terrible place !!!

Location location location. No, it’s not the Hilton but bargain for Sydney city location. Bruce the Manager & Mark the night manager are nice guys to deal with. Old building so floors are a bit squeky. Food left in Kitchen goes missing sometimes. Nice open court area to hang out.

Don’t go to this hostel for stay! ATTENTION !🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵The infrastructure of this hostel is extremely old and nasty even has a smell of mould in corridors and rooms. The Manager of this Backpacker Hostel is a racist and he is awfully impatient. Since it is my first time visiting Australia, I asked only two questions about security and cleanliness, he was rude to me saying: ”Do you want to stay or go!?” And forced me to leave their place and didn’t give my deposit back! The manager is a rascal! I’m going to report him to the police! The rooms are very small, one person snore and other can NOT fall sleep!

The hotel staff were friendly and I was given a quiet room in a central city location. Unfortunately, the room was dirty and not up to the $95s I paid for a "deluxe room". The shower had someone else's hair covering the drain and there was no soap of any kind provided. The bathroom really needed a deep scrub and the water smelt funny. The hot water would suddenly go freezing cold and then boiling hot. The beds were squeaky and old. This place definitely needs a renovation and is generally in need of better keeping! One of the poorer hostels I've stayed at but I did aleast I felt safe.

Really good location for a small price. Everything gets cleaned regularly and the owner is a very nice and helpful guy

One of the cheapest places to stay in Sydney, conveniently located right next to Central Station. It could do a little upkeep, as it’s a little rough around the edges, but makes up for it with its excellent central location and friendly and helpful staff. Luggage may be stored until 8pm after checking out. My A$35/night private room (shared toilet and bath) which I booked through Agoda was just the right size with a view overlooking the main street and train line. Highly recommended for budget travelers! 👍👍

As a backpacker staying there in the start of covid I'm not even going to mention how run down this place is, just going to mention how evil the staff were throwing people to the street, don't stay there, they don't deserve your money

Great location near central station and walking distance to the CBD Staff were friendly at check-in and helpful. Room was clean, had a locker, just had to use my own lock. Got some slices of pizza on Wednesday night for free, and pancakes on the weekend. Will stay again.

Best stay in Sydney. Cheap, very clean,. Within walking distance from Paddy's Market and China Town. And I had hip replacement. This was our third stay.

Absolutely do not stay here. I stayed here a couple of years ago and had the worst experience of my life. Allow long-term customers to boolly newcomers. Politely like an adult at 11:30 am I asked someone in my room in which I had just moved into if they would please consider using headphones. She’d had her videos playing for the last two hours. She said loudly “you’re the only one that has ever had an issue, no!!”. I said nothing further and emailed management to speak to her, saying I don’t like conflict. She left the room, came back, and aggressively accused me of being “very annoying” because I spoke to her at 11:30 am and woke a guy up. I said that “but your videos woke me up, and you’ve been playing them for two hours...?”. She then told me no one else had an issue and I was being annoying by having my bags “everywhere”. My bags were exactly in place in the locker and shelf. She then talked over me relentlessly, repeatedly saying that I was “annoying” for waking a guy up at 11:30 am, despite her waking me up with her music. She continued to be loud, talk over me and demand I leave. The reception staff asked me to move rooms because they wouldn’t believe the woman was like that - which is a clear case of discrimination and gaslighting: you’re new, so it can’t be her. I asked why her bullying was being rewarded. Then management Rebecca came. I can see Rebecca is extremely problematic, she threatened to rip out the throat of another guest and kick her out: Jasmine, below and the owner has simply dismissed it. Rebecca immediately sided with the bully and said I had been “patronising”, and then said that her inappropriate behaviour was acceptable because I was “patronising”, she said that by speaking I would’ve woken the other guy up at 11:30 am but paradoxically it is okay for the other backpacker to have her music and video going for two hours at 11:30 am. Apparently a normal speaking voice of one line at 11:30 am is unacceptable but two hours of videos at 9:30 am is perfectly fine. She said other people in the room denied she had been aggressive to me, but no one else was in the room at that time except myself and a Japanese gentleman, who spoke no English and was unable to follow what happened. When I asked how I was being patronising, the manager said “like you are being now”, and that I was “irate”. Wow such a ridiculous tactic. I said how is questioning you “patronising”, I’m understandably upset and, in fact, your accusations to me are extremely patronising. She immediately said “no, no you’re just saying that” I said “no you definitely are”, as SHE was definitely projecting. She then said a normal person would ask - and she bizarrely gestured in a begging way with her arms curled into her body apologetically, looking up and saying “sorry!” and looking embarrassed for asking. When I asked her if she was saying I wasn’t normal, she immediately denied it, even though that’s literally quoting her. She said I was “twisting her words”, when it was a direct quote. When I asked to how it’s okay to play videos but not okay to speak, she became edgy and started demanding I leave. She then turned and accused me of breaking a power point. I said “it was already dangling like that?!”. When I looked shocked at the accusation, she immediately started saying “leave in 20 minutes or else I’ll call the police”. I was like <why is she threatening the police>? She continued to threaten the police. This woman was very nasty rude bullying and gas lighting me repeatedly when I questioned her accusations and just a nasty piece of work. The place is problematic, they had one shower recess for several dorms and it absolutely stunk, one or two toilets that stunk, the kitchenette had tiny refrigerators that won’t close properly and they were tiny cockroaches crawling everywhere. Like other reviewers I did hear rats, there was no air conditioning, no lives and the place is old and rundown. A few of power points that were there were extremely unsafe with loose wires dangling everywhere. Wi-Fi was terrible.

It's not a 5 star hotel. It has extremely affordable rooms. 5 min walk to train station train station. Friendly staff. Definately one of the best hostels I've been to in Sydney.
