Hands down one of the best vegan restaurants I’ve been to in Sydney, serving very authentic, cruelty-free Mexican food. We went for one of their banquet options which was excellent value for money. The vegan seafood tacos we’re mind-blowing and every single dish was fresh, well presented and simply delicious. 100% recommend, this will be my new go to place in Newtown.

King St by any other name remains the vegan artery of Sydney and while Calle Rey is far from the vegan mile it's worth the trek. I've been here before pre Covid and it was lovely. So sadly I only have some gross photos of takeaway. The food is amazing and I'm not that big a fan of Mexican. The seafood tacos, while on the pricey end, were fresh and and delicious. The burritos were really really good. Flavourful, Ricey beaney and in the case of the mushroom really rich with this beautiful mole. The churros travelled really well. Crunchy and sugary. The chocolate could've been better. Be back in person for some Margies

Such a lovely place. Cute decor, sweet/friendly/helpful staff and yummy vegan food. They do a 7 course meal for $28/pp. The cocktails were also yummola!!! I wish there was an option to eat something aside the set menu though. There were a few things I'd love to have more of and some things I'd love to have less of. The portion sizes were also a bit small. My friend and I definitely left hungry and needed a post dinner snack! Would be keen to come back if the menu was more than just the set menu. But yummy nonetheless.

We ordered the Japanese fusion set menu. Every dish on the set menu was fried, including the sushi roll (?) which left us feeling very oily afterwards.

First time visit but my sister is a regular. I'm a recently converted "flexitarian" and the vegan spread here is so delicious and full of flavour you forget it is entirely plant based. The 7 course degustation set menu at $28pp represents excellent value. You are full at the end of it without feeling uncomfortable as you often can with so many courses. Stand out were the 2 taco dishes "'calamari" and "prawn". Staff very friendly and super attentive. Take advantage of their happy hour. Will be back with friends and spread the word.

Amazing that this place is gluten free and vegan! The prawns were amazing and the maki rolls were too! Buffalo chicken wings are also great! Customer service is not the best though. We ordered churros that a waiter was walking around and didn’t know which table it belonged to and went to the kitchen, and finally got to our table but gave us all individual napkins first. By this time our churros had gotten cold and the ice cream melted… also this place would be amazing if they composted their food waste /scraps

Great service and nice tacos. Had the "Taco Experience" to taste every taco along and enjoyed this. Other reviews talked about small serving sizes which left them hungry, so we ordered sticky cauliflower wings on top of this. We really regretted this as it ended up being way to much food (contrary to what everyone else is saying). I personally found some tacos to be a little too saucy but still enjoyable. Overall would still recommend if you're a taco lover!

This was my first experience at a Vegan Restaurant and I am so impressed! The textures and flavours of the food were absolutely incredible and I would not have known that it was Vegan if I hadn't been told. Not only is it Vegan but also 100% Gluten Free. It made such a nice change to be able to just eat everything without checking if it was gf first. We ate: - Smoked "Chicken" Nachos - Watermelon "Tuna" Tartare - Buffalo Cauliflower Wings - Passion Fruit Ebi Furai (Crispy "Prawns") - Maki Furai - California Roll Taco - Taco Mushrooms Adobo - Caramel & Chocolate Churros We drank: - Cholopolitan - Pisco Sour My favourite dishes were the Buffalo Cauliflower Wings, the Passion Fruit Ebi Furai, the Maki Furai and the Churros and I could have drank the Cholopolitans all night long! If you are out here, you should definately try their 1. Buffalo Cauliflower Wings 2. Smoked Chiken Taco 3. Rest..... Buffalo wings is a must try, I can't stress enough. Also, if you are ordering any of the Piscoritas, those are huge glasses. Holding it is a challenge. The staff will tell you beforehand. The taste is worth the struggle thou. Will definately revisit.

still wondering how they could make these vegan and gluten-free dishes taste so good! 🥹 i was lucky enough to be invited to this spectacular media event at calle rey in newtown!! had a wonderful time even on a monday night ☺️ im not a big drinker and pretty lightweight you could say.. but their drinks are too easy to down 😭 do get their “cholopolitan” you won’t regret 😋 my favs were definitely the buffalo cauliflower wings hands down and the watermelon tuna tartare! enjoyed the maki furai as well.. caramel & chocolate churros are also the perfect dessert to end the meal! dishes: > smoked chicken nachos > watermelon tuna tartare ✅ > buffalo cauliflower wings ✅ > passionfruit ebi furai > maki furai 🌟 > california roll taco > taco mushroom adobo taco > smoked chicken taco > caramel & chocolate churros 🌟 drinks: > cholopolitan - pisco, cranberry juice, fresh lime juice, triple sec, fresh passionfruit pulp ✅ > pisco sour - pisco, fresh lime, foamer, bitters > pisco espresso - pisco, espresso, carob syrup

Best vegan hotspot in Sydney! 15-20 minute walk from the Newtown train station. Love the cocktails and vegan dishes. The service was great! Highly recommended 🥰❤️

Amazing food, good ambience and friendly staff. We had a tasting banquet with plenty tasty options. Only negative was they only do equal split bills and not according to items an individual specifies

Don’t know if we didn’t order the right things but was expecting a bit more. Was not the biggest fan of the smoked chicken tacos but passion fruit ebi furai and maki furai were nicer. The cocktails were on the stronger side.

I had been meaning to go here for years and I finally found time to make a reservation and I’m so glad I did! The food and drinks were delicious! I had the fish tacos and I was honestly shocked they were plant based. The staff were so friendly and helpful as well. My friends and I all loved it and I hope I can go back!

I am glad to find this place in Sydney. They unquestionably serve the best vegan food I've ever had. One dish you must try is the deep-fried cauliflower wing; it has an a very flavorful "BBQ taste," and I'm addicted to it. They also offer a $5 Taco Tuesday, and I tried the "prawn" taco, which was fantastic. It's also a perfect spot for night out , especially for their cocktails

Delicious fusion of Asian / Mexican (probably more Asian). All vegan and gluten free. Spicy Margarita was not a favourite, but the food was amazing. Portion sizes are bigger than expected.

I love everything from the pisco sour to the amazing churros desert. We had the set menu and it was delicious , the corn was my husband favorite. For me the cauliflower couldn’t be any better, perfect texture, flavors and portions. The chef and the staff welcoming and professionals. Best vegan place ever !!

Excellent, accommodating service, tasty vegan food. Tuesday unlimited tacos is a good deal if you're hungry. Couldn't make it all the way through. As a non-vegan, very impressed with the tacos, super tasty, if a bit saucy on occasion.

Tasty plant based food. The servings were generous. We had the tasting menu and there was a lot of food.

  • 1/5 Branna 2 years ago on Google
The service was ok but the food was just plain awful. It was so bland. There was nothing special about any of it at all. The staff were nice enough and the place looked nice so we gave it a try but to be honest it was just really disappointing. Slightly overpriced for vegetarian food too. Conveniently located near public transport and street parking nearby

I have been trying new plant based cuisine and Mexican hasn't been that much of a positive experience especially I got introduced to the bland version at traditional Mexican restaurants. I never thought people can make it tasty. I went to Bad hombres last weekend and it was disappointing too. Just not on par when the flavoursome vegan food I can make at home and it really lacks the umami I was craving. Then when I got stuck heading to another popular vegan venue in Newtown, I found this place that I meant to go. The place was filled with large groups as if there was some events there, then I found out they have ALL YOU CAN EAT Tacos on Tuesdays and Wednesday. Boy, was it popular and happening! I'm a petite girl so All you can eat is just asking for indigestion and sleepless nights, but judging the price of $15 for 2 tacos, I can see why it would seems cheap for those who can down 10 plus tacos. I do think it is quite expensive especially they didn't taste that amazing. I asked for the best popular options and I was not disappointed. The eggplant tacos was hands down HEAVENLY. Yes I did pay regular price for that but it was worth it. I can cook so I know good food when I taste one. The quesadillas was alright, the cheese at bad hombres was far better. Though it didn't have all those dipping sauce, pineapples to go with it. And there are 4 pieces here! There is cheese mushrooms and beans in the quesadillas. Being all vegan and all gluten free is just perfect for me. I have to say Tacos at Calle Rey is gonna be my new vegan fast food craving spots. If only I can make this at home, I gotta come back and try more of them to 'study' it more, so many more to try. Friendly staff, nice vibe, less busier than the other end of vegan mile that's always in traffic jam at night. Latest menu with updated price as of March 2022

Enjoyed a fabulous 6 course set menu. My favourites were the bbq corn on the cob, cauliflower, the ‘prawn’ taco and the chocolate brownie. It was absolutely delicious and entirely vegan. I highly recommend Calle Rey

This place is amazing, it's only $28 per person for a banquet tasting which left us full and very satisfied. If you get a large cocktail just beware it's actually HUGE, not complaining though. Everything tasted great too, coming back for sure

Food is so delicious! Now one of my favourite vegan places to go! Super yummy and nice rocker vibes inside!

Hilariously oversized lageritas with vodka cruisers instead of beer really set the tone. Fun drinks aside, thank goodness the kitchen serves up delicious vegan food. You wouldn’t know it from the pictures, and you’d have a tough time figuring out how everything is plant based. Particularly liked the “prawn” tacos.

👍 Best restaurant for South Indian dishes. Worth a try of Biryani. Tried Tandoori Soya today and it was the best I ever had here. Egg65 Biryani was so tasty. Crispy Baby corn was bad seemed like it was not fresh. You should not let your standards drop.
