Well, what can I say about Mother Chu's. We've been joyfully eating here since 99 when I was 6. Having been to vegetarian restaurants of differing cuisines all over Sydney, I can safely say that Mother Chu's (Taiwanese), quite easily, provides the highest quality of food that there is. The service provided by Sophie, Umi and Henry is friendly and impeccable. The variety on offer, with over 100 mains to choose from, is unmatched. The portion sizes are generous and their price points very fair. Their mango, raspberry and passionfruit home-made soy ice cream is divine as well as the rest of the dessert menu. Personally, I love the way they cook their veggies Al dente, so they provide some crunch and texture to the dish. If you get the chance to pre-order the Peking duk, do it. It's an occasion that will never disappoint. Mother Chu's especially shines with bigger groups so you can order plenty of dishes and dip your chopsticks into each one! Mother Chu's is an absolute institution for all vegetarians in Sydney. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

I really enjoyed lunch here! This little restaurant has some lovely offerings. The salt and pepper tofu is a little bland but I’d highly recommended the crispy gluten in chilli sauce. Staff are pleasant and kind and the prices are very reasonable. I look forward to going back.

Conveniently located a few minutes' walk from Town Hall Station and Museum Station. One of the few veg*n F&Bs opened at night and pretty crowded each time I visited. Chinese (specifically Taiwanese) allium-free, alchohol-free, and MSG-free vegetarian restaurant; almost all vegan except for a few dishes with honey. Hope they can convert to becoming fully vegan! The entrees were a bit of a hit or miss for me, but the main dishes I tried were great (not oily either). The menu was huge, some of which contained soy or seitan mock meats, and some of which featured tofu and tempeh. Gluten-free options were also labelled.

“We are a family and what we love is that we don’t simply ‘serve’ our customers we take care of them like they are our family”! This is from the daughter of Mother Chu - who sadly passed away a few years ago. Mother Chu used to sit at a table in the corner and read a book when we went there many years ago. Now her daughters sit at the table and read their iPads. (When I say daughter - picture your mum or older). An amazing vegetarian restaurant, warm atmosphere and the absolute best meals I’ve had in Sydney! Please do visit. Not a large space, simple seating and beautiful food!

Had been planning to come here for a while and finally came here for dinner in a weekday. It wasn’t super busy but yes there were few people dining in. Staff and service is pleasant. Food was delicious, tons of variety to choose from. Everything we ordered was unique in itself and tasty. The noodles were not dry as they usually are in other places. I will definitely come here again and will tell my friends too about this little gem.

Wide selection of vegetarian meals. Not cheap, but not too expensive. Really tasty. With some surprising meat substitutes. It’s a very simple restaurant. The staff are really sweet.

This is my first visit to this place. We had the sweet and sour tofu, and claypot egg plant. The sweet and sour tofu is amazing, and the egg plant is perfectly cooked so it wasn't too hard or soggy. The service is very friendly and customers turnaround are relatively quick. Price wise it is on the upper end side compared to non-vegetarian based dish, but if you're after a good vegetarian meal this is a great place! Definitely coming back.

Best vegetarian restaurant I’ve tried in Sydney! Very much recommend the charsiu Bao, eggplant with black bean sauce, and the coconut clay pot. The wait was a little long (30-40min)

Standard, reliable, delicious, healthy Chinese cuisine. Extensive menu. Very friendly staff. Good space between tables, front door kept ajar for air circulation. Everything is delicious and nicely presented. Soups are per person, so one can enjoy the wonton and another can choose hot and sour(about $7/serve). Lots of gluten, tofu, crispy rolls, and some breaded fried specialties for those who like the American style dishes. Hot pots, noodles, stir fries. I had an order of spring rolls which came crisp with just enough sweet sauce, and a lovely garnish of shredded lettuce, cucumber and carrot. The wonton soup was perfectly seasoned and flavourful, the wontons like little tortellini and bits of carrot shred and bok choy spears. I had the Kung Po gluten which came with red capsicums, zucchini chunks and onion (or the white parts of bok choy). Not too sweet, and the chilies soft and not very spicy. Bite into the chili carefully! The steamed rice is a P erfect portion for one. The pot of tea I ordered was Oolong of good quality. Most fishes range between A$18-24, and are ample portion for 1-2 persons. Surcharges for credit card (minimum A$20), and holidays. Take away containers .50 cents. Considering how many Asian restaurants close between December 20-January 4, it was just a delight to find them open on December 28, serving home-style comfort foods in a calm and serene environment. Covid decimated the foodservice industry, fortunately the decades of quality food, availability of take out and delivery kept one of the CBD’s reliable dining outlets going. It’s not fancy, just simple tasty fare served with a smile by people who truly thrive on feeding the hungry a product that they are proud of. I will return again with my veggie friends.

Ordered takeout: steamed dim sum(7AUD for 3), crispy tofu(20AUD), and cashew fried rice(15AUD). Dim sum is a let down, the filling is mushy, they must have used food processor instead of mincing by hand. When I’m paying 20 bucks for a dish, I have certain expectation to its portion and its taste, especially for weekday lunch. They use small boxes for main course, and small soup container for dim sum. Their takeout menu calls appetizer “entree”. The “special sauce” in crispy tofu isn’t anything special, it’s really 榨菜(pickled veggie) mixed with soya sauce. What makes crispy tofu even less appetizing is their obsession with coriander. Don’t they know that it tastes like soap to certain people? Why not use a more inclusive plant? Fried rice uses frozen pea&corn&carrot. Even if they use fresh pea&corn&carrot, the portion is laughable at this price. I’d happily accept 8 dollars for what it is, but at double the price? Ridiculous. Daylight robbery. Now come to think about the nuts, I wouldn’t be surprised if they used store bought roasted cashew and just add them last minute.

Amazing. From the cosy and home like ambience to the warm and friendly staff, I am glad to have been recommended this place myself and I would recommend it to anyone looking for good food that just also happens to be vegetarian. Honestly speaking, if I had food like this everyday. I would have no trouble being fully vegetarian. The experience has been great and it really is a place I always want to go back to.

Mother chu is our favourite restaurant. Staff is friendly and everything is so delicious. The only complaint we have is it is closed on Sundays. Many times we go out on Sunday and want to go to mother chu. Apart from that food and staff amazing!

The food here is AMAZING, it exceeded my already high expectations! The service was incredible too and surprisingly attentive given that a) there were five other tables with patrons, who ALSO received this same level of service, and b) the standards for service in Sydney are pretty low, and the service I received + witnessed would be high even in my home country so doubly so in Sydney! Do be warned that this place does get quite packed at dinner time - I tried to come for dinner previously but the restaurant was full (and for good reason, the food is to die for!!). I tried coming again just after lunch (about 1pm) so I had much more luck getting a table. The menu is HUGE and FULLY vegan despite the name!

Found this place by a accident. Loved it. Great vegan restaurant (well vegetarian as a couple of things contained honey.) The menu was so huge it was difficult to decide what to get. The staff were very robotic but the service is good!

Cozy place in the middle of Sydney, even if you're a meat-eater this place till not disappoint. Very professional staff and super friendly. They appear at the table exactly when you need them to. Quick service. You get the starters a couple minutes after you order and not long after you finish, the main course arrives. Many many options on the menu. I'd recommend order something with sauce because that sauce is incredible.

A long overdue visit to this vegetarian restaurant. Plenty of choises from the menu but decided to go with chef's special - stuffed Lotus root with basil sauce. Delivered steamy hot . Food was delicious. It took roughly 15 min for the food to arrive but understandable as it was a hot dish. Customer service was good too.

I had a fried dish called Honey Gluten with Walnuts something. It was quite good; despite not being too big on sweet things. Also had one of the appetisers. Will be back to try out more of their dishes edit: 2nd visit, this time tried the Fried Tofu with Pepper and Salt. A little bit too salty for some, but not for me. Still good.

What can I say, but that it feels like a home. Eating at here feels like visiting family and the care they put in their cooking shows. Everything has always been great with flavours that treat the ingredients with such respect. Definitely a place to try out and eye opening how they manage flavour packed healthy cooking.

Popped in to Mother Chu's for lunch today, and it was terrific! The menu is long, I just picked the first thing that caught my eye: tempeh with veggies, walnuts, and cashews. It was all tasty, and the tempeh especially had a really enjoyable texture, not mushy. Really lovely staff too. If there are any fellow Austinites reading this who miss Veggie Heaven: prioritize a meal at Mother Chu's!!

No frills, budget friendly restaurant but the menu is so extensive that it's quite overwhelming. We may have ordered wrong but none of the dishes were outstanding. There were also several of the items on the menu which were unavailable to our disappointment. Between the three of us, we shared the Taiwan style eggplant with basil and coriander (good but very strong basil flavour), fried crispy noodles with vegetables and mushrooms (the best out of the others), mapo tofu with noodles (this was very average, not spicy and not like a proper mapo tofu) and crispy tofu with mushroom and broccoli (not bad). Getting the attention of staff to take our order was slow but the food came out quickly.

A veganised yet authentic Chinese food. What a pleasure to be able to choose everything from the extensive menu as vegetarians. All of the creations are realised and served in the most simple way, which is always the best. A little gateway from the fancy surroundings. And they are delicious! Simple ingredients and tasty. Furthermore, what a pleasure to be served by these kind and cute women in a homely atmosphere. All of it for a very faire price. Recommend ✨

Awesome vegetarian food. Been here twice so far, both times were magnificent. The lady was always very accommodating. We came in after a long walk and was feeling hot. She saw us and turned on the aircon. Beautiful service! This is why this restaurant is always busy.

I'm not a vegetarian but I thought I'd give it a go. Absolutely delicious. I cannot figure out how Mother Chu's made "not seafood" taste better than real seafood and there was no stuffing around with shells. The portion sizes were enormous for the price paid. I was asked "sorry do you not like this part?" "Its awesome I just can't eat any more!" Happy staff. Happy customers. Highly recommend.

The food was delicious but this place as a 3-8cm slanted step which I couldn't get my power wheelchair over. I got there early and was waiting for a friend and the staff ignored me until my able bodied friend showed up, went inside and then t a staff member sits us in one of the 2 outdoor tables which were wobbly and the street it's next to the restaurant was *loud*. Like no conversation loud. I really loved the food. Honestly it was great but I don't know why it's marked as wheelchair accessible when it definitely is not accessible. It's such a shame bc is be back every few weeks when I need to be nearby (especially since Bodhi shut down) and I just can't go by myself bc the staff don't acknowledge me

This is one of my favourite Chinese vegetarian restaurants in the whole world. I have been frequenting this place for the last 28 years. The quality remains high all these years. Mother Chu used to sit the corner and smiles at all the customers, sadly she passed away about 5 years back, she was in her mid-90s. Her daughter is fantastic and has been running this place efficiently all these years. Service is great. The best part of the food is they don't overdo the mushrooms or mock meat. They actually use vegetables and churn out brilliant dishes. Try their sizzling stuffed lotus root. One of the best spring rolls. I love their crispy tofu as well. I always visit this place whenever I come to Sydney.

I cannot say enough about this place and the wonderful and kind staff. The food is superb, as fresh as can be and superb spices and portions. I lean towards their specialties but one cannot go wrong. Most of all the staff are wonderfully kind - they may be a family - and took great care of everyone there. Wait a little long but fun people watching and good conversation with the “mother.”

Taiwanese Vegetarian cuisine. Our family has been coming here for 27 years - we believe it is the best Asian food we've ever tried, the best food in Sydney and it is the food I would eat on death row - I mean that seriously. I would highly recommend the Wanton Soup, Moss Soup, Crispy Bean Curd, Crispy Gluten, Salt and Pepper Tofu, any of the eggplant dishes and the Miso Tofu starter. The staff are kind and funny, and the prices are reasonable. Go.

Absolute gem of a place. We had 4 different dishes and they were all unique and very much enjoyed by everyone. It has a real homely atmosphere and feels like you are eating out of someone's home kitchen. The steady flow of people on a Tuesday night showed that we were not the only ones to enjoy the place. No food photos, it all went too fast! No bar or byo here but the tea is so good to complete the experience.

First time went here with a friend, the vegetarian food here is really nice! I am not vegan myself but I really like their foods! Not like other western style vegetarian that consist mostly on tofu-based dish that resulted in tasteless, bland, textureless food that everyone hates. The place really packed and busy, also a bit of waiting time but it's still worth the try. Just a bit of warning that some of the food is lil bit too salty, need to tell the waitress to give a note to the chef when ordering

Tasty vegan fare (a four out of five).... but... for it's budget fitout and ambiance, relatively expensive. We also felt some of the staff seemed a bit disinterested.

Cosy place with delicious vegetarian dishes. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Enjoyed the chefs selection (there was this yam dish and egg plant dish) and ginger tea (a must try!). Marked down on the atmosphere cos we were seated at a position where the sun shone directly into our eyes and there were no other available seats. However, the staff were extremely apologetic about it.

Absolutely the most amazing vegan Chines meal I have ever had. The fake meat actually tasted like fake meat. The customer service was incredible. They gave us free chocolate brownies after our meal. Could not recommend enough! I'll be coming back with more friends to enjoy.

This is one of my all time favourite restaurants that I have been frequenting for over a decade. The family running the restaurant are always wonderful and sweet to deal with and the food is FANTASTIC! I highly recommend the crispy gluten, and any of the honey glazed options (they'll kill any honey chicken craving you might have). There are plenty of equally delicious gluten free options too.

  • 5/5 Margaret M. 1 year ago on Google
We have known about this place for many years but never went in as we were on our way to another favourite restaurant. But what can i say! I am so glad we decided to go to Mother Chus this time and my only regret is we didn’t go years ago! They have the best asian food i have ever tasted. The sauces are rich and full of flavour unlike other places where they water it down. We loved every dish and if you crave honey chicken just get the honey gluten balls, they are to die for! And i have finally found a black bean dish worth eating, such a tasty sauce. So many delicious dishes without a hint of animal products. What more could you ask for. And last but not least the owners are very nice and helpful. So much attention is put into the quality of the dishes you can see that.Well worth the visit.

Simple vegetarian options that resembled homemade Chinese dishes but with meat replacement options. After a while all of the dishes started to taste pretty similar as they all use similar sauces and ingredients. Highly recommend the mushroom stir fry as it was the only dish that did not use the soy strips or tempur.

Mother Chu’s restaurant is an absolute must visit for all, not just veggie/vegans. Wide range of dishes on the menu, large portions, full of flavour and really good prices. The service here was also excellent. Would recommend the seaweed salad, sweet and sour, crispy aubergine, and BBQ bao buns. Also took my partner (who is Chinese) here, and really enjoyed the food.

I visited this place recently for dinner. The food here is absolutely delicious. I do eat meat normally, but the choices of vegetables and gluten that they use instead are great. The food was served piping hot and the drinks were nice too. The only issue I had was management. They probably need to hire more staff. Moreover, we ordered 7-8 dishes, and it wasn't ideal to get one dish served at a time, esp when in a group. I would've appreciated all food be served at similar times, so there was no waiting.

The food was okay tasting however since the portions were small and the dishes were overpriced, it was just not worth it. On top of that the customer service was bad and rude! The waitress would walk away mid way through asking for sauces or forget that we ordered water so we would have to ask 2-3 times in order to get the sauces and water we had asked for. Also found a hair in one of our dishes. DO NOT RECOMMEND!

👍 Best restaurant for South Indian dishes. Worth a try of Biryani. Tried Tandoori Soya today and it was the best I ever had here. Egg65 Biryani was so tasty. Crispy Baby corn was bad seemed like it was not fresh. You should not let your standards drop.
