Working here took a serious toll on my mental and physical health. 0 stars. + 1 star for the incredible First Nations and PoC staff that are truly the heart of this institution.

Located on Sydney’s iconic Circular Quay, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia offers a wide range of exhibitions and events. It’s more suitable for people who are more interested in modern art. Amazing coffee shop on rooftop with astonishing views over opera house, harbour bridge, and circular quay. Free entry and easy access by public transport.

This place is my haven in Sydney. The art is always interesting, well displayed with engaged and informative staff. The cafe has the best location in Sydney with stunning views of the harbour and great food at very reasonable prices. Never been busy either when I’ve been here; go figure. I come here nearly every time I visit Sydney. A hidden treasure and a great way to spend our tax dollars.

Recommended by a friend - I arrived pretty early for a meeting nearby and had time to kill. Free entry and a pretty extensive selection of modern art and installations. A few sections were closed off. Security staff were very active asking us to keep our backpacks facing 'front' ... Well worth the time spent and it was good to see the bark paintings and other multidimensional presentations. Easily accessed - a few minutes walk from Central Station.

An enjoyable experience where calmness and tranquility, meshes well with visually appealing regional art. The second floor exhibits were free to peruse and helped me gain an appreciation of Australian artists. I'm glad I found this place, as it was a great escape.

An alternative to art. It is contemporary art. It won't be to everyone's tastes. If the Museum doors are open then open your mind and enter. Pictures featured are from the Yoko Ono solo Sydney show plus other pieces from the museum's other free entry floors.

I saw an excellent exhibition of works by contemporary Australian artists and particularly enjoyed those done by artists of the First Nation. I got a free guided tour which was very useful in understanding the background of the artists and their histories. Very beautiful work!

MCA is an inspiring place to visit when in Sydney, it offers thought provoking art installations and exhibitions. A powerful place of connection with talented artists. Friendly staff clean amenities, situated in The Rocks —Sydney’s artistic icon. Spend a few hours or the whole day there’s much to see and plenty of food and beverages to quench the afternoon appetite. When in Sydney we always visit the MCA and the SAG. Highly recommended 10/10!

Worth a quick visit if you’re in the neighborhood. Not the best art museum in Sydney, but that’s just my opinion. You may love the artwork there. The cafe on the top floor has awesome views of the harbor. The glass elevator is also a fun ride.

An interesting and fun museum. Cool modern art, with a mix of canvas, sculpture and audio/visual works. Entrance is free (donation boxes abound), and you can easily spend more than an hour perusing the various pieces over the three levels. When you're done (or need a break) head to the top floor cafe for commanding views over Sydney Harbour.

The entry for the Museum of Contemporary Art was free, which I really appreciated! Next to that, the museum has a lovely lookout, with a café, where you can see both the Opera and the Harbour Bridge. The expositions are over a couple of floors and focused on different social themes. One of them was about feminist art, very interesting approach and lots of new information!

Really loved this museum! Free entry and so much good stuff to see! I spend a couple hours here exploring and saw a good amount - everything was so lovely and thought provoking. Lots of care put into the labels with lovely little child friendly notes too, and there also was advertised a free guided tour if I remember correctly. The rooftop cafe was bustling and looked lovely but I just visited for the view - it was so lovely I can see why so many people mentioned it! Would definitely recommend if you’re in the area

Great free activity to go and visit. I almost wasn’t going to go, but I am glad I did. There were so many interesting exhibits. They have the largest bark painting collection. The art showing the pain aboriginals have gone through was so moving and informative.

Nice place to visit on a hot day in Sydney. Lots of unusual art. However, I would recommend seeing a special collection and paying for it over just visiting the museum for general art expos. Staff were friendly and welcoming.

Quiet place for the artistic folks to enjoy the various art pieces. There are four levels inside the building, with lift available for easy access. There is a cafe on the 4th floor which has great view of the harbour and the iconic Sydney landmarks. Free entrance just steps away from Circular Quay. Good to spend half an hour to stroll through the halls.

I've always loved this Museum. This is my first time in the building next to the Old MCA. Went to see Doug Aitken and enjoyed his exhibitions and others also. Nice staff. Easy to wander and enjoy. Cafe has the best views. Pretty happy with it.

I was disappointed honestly. I came with the impression and expectation to view many pieces arts displayed across different era in history given the size of the two building combined. However, the exhibition is only limited to two floors (and it isn't complete floor). The collection is theme based and I did not find anything that is uniquely Sydney or Australian from the museum sadly.

Modern art museum located centrally in the iconic Sydney harbour. Free entry with lots of interesting art pieces spanding over 5 levels. Must visit the cafe on the upper level with paranomic views of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. Considering the views and the location the cafe is excellently priced as well.

Fun day out visiting MCA. It's always a pleasure to take in the rooftop Cafe or restaurant Graze while there.

  • 5/5 Stephen S. 4 years ago on Google
The MCA is a Sydney treasure. No wonder it is one of the most visited contemporary art museums in the world! This wonderful Art Deco building houses an amazing collection of contemporary art, from paintings to photography, sculptures, installation art, and more. We never walk out and not have a spirited conversation about a particular piece of art we have just seen. It’s engaging, thoughtful and, sometimes, provocative – as a contemporary art museum should be!

  • 5/5 tanja 4 years ago on Google
I love this art gallery. I have been a few times now and every time I see some really good art. My favourite piece which has been there every time is a wall of driftwood where every piece somehow naturally looks exactly like an animal. I think last time I went there was no description to even say that this was the purpose so maybe it was just random driftwood and to me all driftwood looks somehow exactly like an animal. Another thing that is great about this gallery is the children's comments on some of the artworks and all of them are extremely funny.

  • 5/5 Joshua L. 4 years ago on Google
Great place. The exhibitions I choose to go and pay for are always good. Location is great as well as it is near The Rocks, Circular Quay Station and Sydney Opera House. One tip about this place is, if you’re going to be visiting this museum often, it’s best to get a membership, you’ll get access to a year’s worth of events. One hack is that if you have recently bought a paid entry to an exhibition, show your paid ticket to get the price off your membership!

  • 1/5 Wendy O. 3 years ago on Google
Was disappointed to visit this gallery. Nothing amusing to explore. A waste of my time. It was a 'one time' place to visit and good to know what's inside the gallery, not recommending to friends.

  • 5/5 Angela H. 4 years ago on Google
As per usual, the Museum of contemporary art pushes the boundaries and challenges what audiences, art critics and the general public understand about what makes art. There are several levels, elevator access, a cafe on the rooftop with nice harbour views and friendly staff and security. Definitely recommend if you're an avid art fan or just curious to learn more!

Nifty museum with a lot of great free exhibitions. I also paid for the Cornelia Parker exhibition, and it was a great overview of her work. The free guided tour was good for learning interesting details about some of the pieces and pointing out themes across the works.

  • 5/5 Daniel B. 4 years ago on Google
Great free exhibits and fun stuff for kids in the creative space. Beautiful views. Also, a fantastic function centre if you need a venue. My work did a function for circa 350 people and the space was huge and worked really well. Cracking views of the bridge and opera house make a big impact with the antendees!

  • 5/5 Jason B. 4 years ago on Google
Always something interesting alongside the permanent exhibits. Food and drink options as well as a very well stocked gift shop round out the offering. If you're going to be a regular visitor, I'd suggest a membership as it will pay for itself afte a few paid exhibits.

Look it's a good gallery... but it doesn't have a lot of space, nor a huge number of artworks on display in general. Also there's no real indication of when certain flies are open it closed, so there have been times when practically everything is closed but we only found out by checking of every floor ourselves. On a good day this place is fantastic, but as a repeat visitor it's fine, but not the best in the area

The MCA is a building smack bang in the middle of The Rocks / Circular Quay - the building is beautiful and the location stunning with plenty of places for a meal or drinks in the area. The museum isn’t very large so can be explored in a couple of hours or less. I saw the Lindy Lee: Moon in a Dew Drop exhibition and it is well worth the visit as it has some really cool works. Entry is free but donations are appreciated. Entrance is via George Street only, exhibit on harbour side. Parking available at the Overseas Passenger terminal next door or easy transport links via ferry, train, light rail and buses as Circular Quay is a main transport hub.

This gallery is one of my favourites. It is intimate enough so a visit doesn't seem overwhelming and it usually has an awesome exhibition to see. I went to the Lindy Lee Moon in a Dew Drop exhibition and loved it! The space is great and the location fabulous! Right next to the Rocks.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney is a feast for the eye and a festival for the mind deep in the central area of the city! It's free of charge to visit and there's a plethora of carefully crafted and curated art on display in it, encompassed by the vivid vibes in the city. It's clean, both outside and inside, and its amenities are also very well equipped and maintained, with staffs stationed there to provide good service at all times to enhance your experience here. Due to its strategic location in the city and its cutting-edge and one-of-a-kind architecture, it could be spotted fairly easily as it stands out among the rest round the Circular Quay. On top of that, it's accessible via several modes of transportation, most notably by train to the nearby Circular Quay Station, by ferry to the wharfs of the Quay, and by buses. However, though, do note that you could only enter the Museum through its entrance facing George Street. In overall, the Museum is a good place for you to enjoy yourself in the pool of creativity by the Quay and it's really worth a visit when you're out and about in the core of Sydney!

An amazing place to browse if you get the chance! Some time-limited exhibitions may require entry fees, but the free exhibitions are worth the visit. The store in particular was the highlight of our visit, as they stock merchandise and card games from The School of Life! The staff here are very friendly and welcoming, plus knowledgeable about the exhibitions.

The Museum of Contemporary Art is a showcase for Australian and international contemporary art, with a rotating permanent collection and temporary exhibitions. Aboriginal art features prominently. The art deco original building has had a modern space grafted on to it, the highlight of which is the rooftop cafe with stunning views. There are free guided tours daily, in several languages.

The cafe has stunning views over the harbour provided there are no cruise ships(none during COVID), food and service are pretty good and the shop has some interesting novelties. The art, well, let's just say I'd prefer a baroque still life, a Rembrandt, a Frans Hals or a child's crayon drawings.

One of the best museums in Sydney where the entrance is free, while art works and professionalism of staffs seem to be the top level. This museum is a public opened, walking in distance, and welcoming place for travelers, local commuters, and even bystanders. Recommended.

Very beautiful art collections here, interpretation up to the mind of the viewer in most cases. There are 4 floors of galleries, the top most hosting a Cafe with an incredible view point of the harbour. It does have elevator services which allow wheelchair access to all floors, and gender fluid bathrooms. The gift store is also quite quaint and sells interesting bobbles.

From a venue perspective: If you want a quintessentially Sydney venue, this is one of the few legitimately awesome ones. The night orchestrates itself. Food is on point. Accessibility is as you can expect at an established place like this. Sydney parking is Sydney parking though.

I like the diversity of mediums displayed at this museum. What impressed me the most was the staff. We asked about one of the paid event there and the staff asked for our preference and helped us decide if it's worth paying for. The museum is 5 minutes walk to the Rock Market and 5 minutes walk from Circular Quay train station and wharf where you can get a ferry to go to Manly Beach. It's a spacious museum so you have plenty of space to relax and enjoy the arts.

For our daytrip, we decided to explore the Museum of Contemporary Arts near Circular Quay. The gallery entrance is free. They had lockers where you can safekeep your backpacks and not be bothered while you view the art pieces. Located on the 4th floor roofdeck is the MCA Cafe. We ordered 1. Pork Belly Roll 4/5 2. Fish and Chips 4/5 3. Lavender and Rose Mocktails 5/5 I highly recommend checking this place out for tourists who just want to enjoy sydney without spending too much.
