Highly recommended. A must to do in Sydney. You need 3-4 hours to explore all sections. The Industrial Revolution and Space sections are far beyond words. Specific section for children and all people interested in science to do some scientific funny experiments.A unique museum full of history and adventure. The Powerhouse Museum is the major branch of the Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences in Sydney. Located in Harris St with easy access via public transport. No admission fee with nice staff.

It has a lot to keep you amused especially if you are into engineering, science or art. Also good place for kids and food lovers. I am personally into engineering and enjoyed seeing how airplane and train engines work, my friends were into arts and culture and they had a good time too.

There are some great sections, and then there are some not so much. Kids may enjoy the exhibits on space and old trams, trains. Entry is free, and there are school tours often here. Guidance on exhibits can be better, and a map with the recommended path can help. A nice experience for may be 2 hours. Interactive sections on science, space, and old steam engines will keep kids happy.

Just a few minutes walk from light rail station. The staff at the entrance was nice and reminded you to get the map from the table. The locomotives displayed on level 3 (Exit/Entrance ) are very eye-catching. Let's know the history of transportation in NSW. The Space section is also interesting, especially the feeling of zero gravity and driving a rocket. The experiment section is good for kids to experience science. There is also a large area for displaying historical relics and contemporary art where more staff stand by. They can answer your questions about the exhibits. It does not display the exhibits chronologically. I'm not sure about the theme of this museum. It also displays drag queen and fashion.

Stumbled across this museum on a walk. I had great fun exploring it. There are tonnes of interesting exhibits, including trains, fashion, furniture, planes, science, space, and music. It is a great place to bring children. Entry is free. The museum is fully disability accessible. There are accessible toilets. There are wheelchairs for hire, but these are limited, so it is best to call in advance.

Itโ€™s a free activity so you can only gain by coming here. Plenty to see for everyone from fashion and LGBT to the original train and trams. The 1001 items exhibit in the heart of the building was my personal favourite. Lots of connected rooms with different colours and themes based on the random trinkets on display โ€˜Twas a rainy day when we went so this was great to hide in for a few hours.

Great to visit and learn something. I hadn't been since I was a kid. I look forward to visiting again. Entry was free and there's a nice souvenir shop which has unique items relating to the exhibition on display.

The powerhouse museum is worth visiting for the museum itself more than what it is showing. The way the exhibitions are presented is wonderful. The lighting, the separations, the sounds... everything has been very well thought of. However, after leaving the museum its hard to feel like you have learnt something valuable. Maybe I was hoping for a deeper meaning but I got to see a lot of beautiful things.

Suddenly having a day off on a rainy weekday meant I had a chance to see some exhibitions I already wanted to see - the Eucalyptus exhibit and the Microcars. The staff in the foyer were pleasant and helpful. The (free) exhibitions were varied and I found them all pretty interesting. I liked the interactivity with some of the exhibitions (the Experimentation Lab, the Steam exhibition, and the Space one). Printed guides to read were handy. The shop has lovely but pricey souvenirs, and a few small items set me back over $100. I didn't try the cafรฉ but other visitors seemed to enjoy it. Will definitely return at some point to see new and revisit permanent exhibits.

Admission is free right now. They have a video introducing things in the museum and that was nice. The mini car section and steam engine sections were pretty cool.

Kids will love it. So much for kids to learn and see and for free. Quite during weekdays. Can spend 2-3 hours here easily. Must visit while in Sydney if you have kids. Also a nice playground not far outside from the museum.

Great museum especially for kids. The science section would keep them busy for a fair while. Has some really good exhibits as well such as the steam engine and clock. Area is very accessible from haymarket.

Don't want to be at work right now. Rather be at this museum. You can spend all day in the ikea-like bathroom display. Koala exhibit was confusing. Would go back with Emily. 10/10

Had a lovely Saturday morning. We came here to see the Iranian art exhibition. Well presented display with pieces from 1800s to 1900s. The admission was free. Staff was covid19 safe offering free masks to people. There was a parking offer for people too on Thomas St. Lovely staff. Good museum to spend a couple of hours.

I enjoyed the museum; however, I was disappointed overall. I walked in; there is no reception - no personnel, so no welcome, and no map; you are left to your own devices. It later turned out there was an A4 paper map on a white-painted table, but I overlooked it. The first thing you see is the locomotive and carriages - this is great. However, the museum signage is virtually non-existent so it is easy to miss an entire gallery. For example, I walked downstairs and from a landing saw some stationary steam engines - I thought they looked interesting so proceeded downstairs and found myself in a "kids fun zone thing" - where were the engines? I'd missed the 'turn-off' as there was no signage. As per most 'designer modern museums', the lighting is appalling. Please DON'T paint the ceiling black and then have spot lights! If you are an exhibition space your job is to show off what you have; don't put things in the dark! Paint everything white and have proper lighting! There is no thematic interpretation - some humans demonstrating and interpreting the exhibits would be good. There is quite a lot of empty space in the museum - this is because of the original building's design; however, this isn't interpreted in any way shape or form. Tell me about why the building was built, what was the original purpose, light and interpret the gantry cranes. Whilst I was there a large part of the museum appeared to be taken up with fabrics and textiles. This was of no interest to me - I was expecting machines and industry in a 'Powerhouse'. The historic beam engine was very difficult to see up close and photograph. The museum shop was a joke. It looked like a posh designer had been engaged and filled it with designer apparel and arty books. There were no souvenirs - nothing purchased. Seen it. I have no need to see it again. ๐Ÿค”โ˜น๏ธ

It's amazing display of a museum. So many things to see from its different eras of products. There are four levels of buildings to see. Don't worry, they provide escalators and lifts! Toilets and shop including cafe (try their orange cake!) To visit this museum by bus 501 from Central or just walk from Chinatown (paddy's market). Note : come now before they will renovate it on next February. Free of charge.

Hooray, it's here to stay. Just had a guided tour and it was great to see the exhibits you used to be able to just wander around and see, but currently due to the now not happening site relocation and social distancing is not possible. Hopefully now they are not relocating business as usual won't be too far off.

If i knew that half the exhibits would be missing & the rest " temporarily unavailable" I would'nt have brought the family. Having worked in museums for 20 yrs I have to say moving the Power house is an absolute waste of public money not to mention all the damage & loss of the exhibits in the process! Build a 2nd museum YES but not on the rubble of historic Willow grove..

Steam locomotive is the permanent highligh here, entertaining event for engineering ignorant like myself. Not a lot of people even for a Sunday afternoon. Covid-19 prevention 6 star here with cleaners constantly cleaning the elevators and wherever spots are frequently touched. Spent an hour here on this free museum. Recommended.

I love how tickets are free of charge now, there's a lot to discover there. Incredible technology use on one of the exhibits, would recommend. Due to covid bookings are required and the exhibitions can get boring so stick with a 2 hour booking. Easy to find in the middle of the city. At the moment I'm just adding characters to reach 200 so I can upgrade or something.

This is one of my favourite museums. I love the eclectic range of curated items - from haute couture to trains to parts of spacecraft. My wife and I went there for a timed entry two hour session. It was so interesting that we ended up booking a second (back to back) two hour session so that we could continue checking things out. Also included in each timed entry session is an optional guided tour, which we did, and I highly recommend doing.

Some really great history here though overall experience is a bit uneven. Some of the exhibits are so detailed and informative while some others just feel as if they are filling up space. The exhibits on modern art and on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were brilliant. Entry is free as they are sprucing up the place so a good time to go have a look

Nice collection of valuable things to the human history. The motor section gives nice insights about the introduction of different kind of motor vehicles into the mankind. The steam section provides lovely visuals of the introduction of steam into people's life and how it transformed the things forever. The machines section is really fascinating with collection of the beginning of computer to the telephones and various other important inventions. At the entrance itself, the guitar section fulfills the aesthetic hunger.

Itโ€™s like walking through a book. Free entry as well! You could spend hours in a single section. We spent 3.5 hours and barely covered a fifth. There is so much to explore and learn about. For a family with kids itโ€™s probably best to come with a mission in mind, for example to explore the space section on the back of research at home/school about space. Not just roaming about. The experimentation space for kids (and the big kids) on the bottom floor has a good range of elements (electricity, electromagnetism, physics, etc.). Having said that, lighting could be better, and the signage next to the exhibits could be bigger, perhaps with a barcode linking to a site that has more information. Telstra coverage inside was quite good. Plenty of sanitisation stations. And the bathrooms are clean and well kept. We will be returning soon for further exploration.

Absolutely loved it. Every single thing is simply adorable and when you get to the Experiments , you'll get so childish with all the stuffs over there. I mostly enjoyed Playing the Thermening and playing the Siren while generating electricity (I must have annoyed a lot of people that day ๐Ÿ˜…). Also, you don't wanna miss the Old Steam engine vibes too along with the music when the Horn is pushed ๐Ÿคฃ. I would recommend visiting the Experiments at first and then explore around.

A great institution in Ultimo, a short walk from Haymarket and Chinatown with easy public transport access or a 15 minute walk from Central Station. FREE entry (2022) A welcome escape from the humid summer weather into an amazing huge space with air-conditioning. Lots of interesting things to see for young and old. There is a special area for kids on level 1 where they can enjoy hands-on displays and learn. Cafe and gift shop available for a short break.

A must visit place in Sydney. I was so amazed at seeing actual machines and replicas. A good place to bring kids to learn. There are interactive exhibits where you can try by yourself and see how the machines are working. Specially loved the design area and plasma ball. Space area is wonderful. Zero gravity experience is must to have, even though I was dizzy afterwards. First exhibit you see is the very first Locomotive engine of whole Australia. Itโ€™s very rare to see a countryโ€™s first Locomotive engine.

Really fun and interactive exhibits. Staff are super helpful and lovely. The Gucci exhibit was a great exhibit which provided an insight into various campaigns from the past- very interesting if you enjoy fashion. August 2023: Another great visit to this museum which has new and interesting shows including fashion, space technology, drawing, contemporary installations, Pacific art and a new upcoming show that looks spectacular from the viewpoint, 1001 remarkable objects. Early 2023: Amazing museum and so much to discover. The clay and Zampatti fashion exhibitions were spectacular. The fashion was outer worldly. The space and transportation shows were very impressive too.

We visited the Powerhouse Museum (Darling) on January 2, 2024. Because Sydney is a very walkable city, we walked there after we finished visiting another museum. This one in Darling is near Chinatown / Paddy Haymarket. The cost was free which made it even better! The museum was amazing. I loved the various exhibits with a focus on steam engines. It was fascinating how the use of steam powered so many things from a printing press, to a fire engine. They also had various instruments on exhibit as well. We met a wonderful employee that provided in-depth information. If you love technology from the past, you must visit! I also encourage anyone with children to visit too. They had a cool exhibit for the kids.

A must see before they close for a 3year renovation as of Feb 2024! An AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL experience with something for EVERYONE! Electricity, steam power, space, fashion, history and PRIDE! Clean, beautifully presented exhibitions, fully accessible, lots of quiet low light areas too if your from a Nuro-Spicey family. We were lucky enough to see the volunteer steam engine master come in and start up all the steam powered equipment. He even stopped to chat to us after as we were following him around quietly in awe of how he went about starting each machine. A fine art these days! Absolutely a must see if you are in Sydney and entry was free at the time we went too.

It will close soon (5-Feb-24) for 3 years for major renovations. Not much exhibitions to see. But it is free for now. A good place to take young kids to take a look. And enjoy the outing in nearby areas and dine in haymarket for good food.

Fun for the whole family, you will enjoy a rich self guided tour that will blow your mind, from evolution of the steam engine and the industrial revolution to the dawn of the space age and a special exhibition about aboriginal arts and artifacts, unfortunately but understandably many hands on activities are unavailable and your visit time is currently restricted to two hours which is very short given the large amount of artifacts on show but will still be two hours well spent

To remember us how the humans have got to now this museum has a lot of interesting things to show. In general, way finding signages in a more clear coherent way maybe through a map could have been done better, like something that could explain how things relate to each other or a better map or networks that visualise quantitative information.

I went as a farewell visit to see the amazing collection of large objects before the museum was to be sold off to developers. Sadly we couldn't get into the main hall, despite having a guide. But the good news is that the NSW Liberal government has now decided to not close the museum in Ultimo and break up its collection. I have loved this museum since I first visited it as a child at the old site.

Wondeful museum, so great it was saved from clousre for short sighted politicial opportunism. It's currently free entry so even better time to visit. The use of the turbine halls for displaying large aircraft and spacecraft is an inspired repurposing of an old power house. Exhibition program is always interesting. But seems that this place suffers from a lack of proper funding.

I absolutely loved my visit. I had a 10:00 to 12:00 time and was shocked when the time was up. I could have stayed longer with no trouble. The exhibits were good and the steam engine section totally blew me away. There were working engines actually powered by steam!!! I highly recommend a visit here. Do not miss it if you visit Sydney.

I had a great time visiting Powerhouse Museum with my three year old son. Huge collection, good accessibility by all modes of public transport and it's entirety free. Hope NSW government does not proceed with relocating it to Parramatta. The only downside is that many museum items designed to be interactive with option of switching , turning and tweaking are not functioning at the moment for some reason.

Museum: lots of different exhibitions and informative displays. Only suggestion would be to have a better flow between exhibition spaces. Great place to educate yourself on history, the present and the future. There is a gift shop, cafe and toilets located inside. Price: so worth it! There is free entry - only need to scan QR code and enter some personal details (due to COVID) Audience: this museum is for EVERYONE, from young to old. Come as a family, come with friends or come by yourself! Location: 13min walk from Central train station Customer Service: friendly staff at entry and inside the museum.

Located near Sydney central station, this museum is a must visit. Easily accessible from tram stop, entry is free for all. The staff is very helpful and will guide you when you enter. There are total 4 floors and there is so much to see. One floor has history of steam engines and locomotive history of Australia. There is also experiment section for kids to know and learn science. There is a lab to experience 'no gravity feeling' which is awesome.

  • 1/5 chris s. 2 years ago on Google
Awful experience, over designed spaces lead to it feeling empty and wasteful. Take the elevator to the 4th floor and waste your time walking around empty exhibits; follow the ramp down to the main floor to walk into a staff member saying you canโ€™t continue this way because there is a some undisclosed photo op happening. You are told you need to take your toddler back up all the ramps and take the elevator back to get around. When asked why there wouldnโ€™t be a sign they saidโ€the event coordinator wanted no signs postedโ€. There are also no signs posted on where the toilets are I guess itโ€™s more visually appealing to not post any. I wouldnโ€™t recommend this museums to children under 4 years old as anything they can interact with is placed at adult interaction level.

  • 5/5 Kevin W. 2 years ago on Google
Completely reimagined experience since the upgrade. Itโ€™s now more of a beautiful museum and less of an interactive science space. Could easily spend a day here. The eucalyptus exhibit is amazing, make sure you explore all the โ€œhiddenโ€ spaces.

Would only recommend if the weather isnโ€™t great out. Disappointing that so many of the key exhibits were closed to private parties. Didnโ€™t think to check online prior to showing up so make sure you see what is currently open on the day you plan on going.

Free entry, nothing special that needs a dedicated visit there but we were out nearby and wanted to take a little walk to walk off our lunch. Good place to kill time for a family with young kids but nothing really interest us. Still giving it a 4stars as its free and canโ€™t really complain about it.

Although I have such fond memories of the Powerhouse Museum as a kid, now as an adult, I didn't really enjoy the museum as much as I remembered. The exhibitions that were interesting have been there for decades (the interactive lab and the space exhibition) but overall it felt like a hodgepodge of different exhibitions without a clear thread or cohesive narrative. It was also difficult to navigate. Staff were super friendly and helpful though.

  • 5/5 Kat W. 1 year ago on Google
Huge museum jam packed with plenty of various exhibitions. Family friendly (inc. pram friendly) and wheelchair friendly. Street parking is available depending how busy the area is. The best part of the museum is the aviation section - lots for the kids to look at.

Love love love this museum!! My kids had a blast experience here, they didn't want to leave!! So many things to see and try! Many cool science experiment displays, so much better than in Wollongong one. Even for us adults, it was a fun experience! The best part: it's free!!

The Powerhouse Museum in Sydney is an absolute delight! A treasure trove of innovation and creativity, it offers captivating exhibits that cater to all ages. From historical artifacts to cutting-edge technology, this museum showcases the marvels of human ingenuity. The facilities are well-maintained, and the cafรฉ offers a welcome break. A must-visit destination in Sydney for a day of discovery and inspiration!

It's quite an interesting museum, I specially loved the interactive science expo and the Space one. The entry is free so that's always appreciated. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is due to the number of closed expos, I believe they were under maintenance but still such a shame :( If you have a few extra days in Sydney, do give it a go :)

Great place to visit with kids. This place has a lot of this to offer. From space information, science experiments and visual arts. Kids loved it. Surprised that it is free. However I found the staff very rude. Talking in the rude way with kids while stopping them to climb on the train while they can put sign to let people know. Parking at near by Novotel hotel is available at the cost of 20$ flat on weekends which can reduce to 17$ if ticket gets authenticated at the museum reception. Except this it worth a visit

Interesting stuff to see. Recommend to take kids to this place, they'll have fun and learn about how the technology evolved in the last century. There is a lego room which can keep kids entertained for sometime and take a break, also the experimental items are engaging and amusing. Could be a good plan for a weekend.

Been here twice - first in 2017 and second in 2023. While there was a decline in the amount of exhibits, they also removed the entrance fee I suppose to compensate. Still worth the visit especially if you like looking at cool collections, learning with interactive exhibits, and just generally visiting museums with random knick knacks, science facts, and AHRT. I believe this is an extension of an arts and science museum, so it's a good mix of both.

The museum was very interesting and I would recommend having a look at what displays they have up before going. For the main exhibit, children under 17 had free access and they also had sunflower disability lanyards at the front desk. It is a short walk from central station and has lifts for easy access within the building.

While in Sydney, we booked into see the Atmospheric Memory exhibition. There is something in this exhibition to interest everyone. While the first four rooms focused on the concept, have the time to look through any of the other exhibits theory, the last two rooms are where you will spend most of your time. It is an interesting concept as to how the sounds and movements we make distort/leave an impression in the atmosphere. This is a paid exhibit and was well worth it. Unfortunately, we didn't have the time to look through any other exhibits,
