The Australian Museum is a heritage-listed museum located in the heart of Sydney CBDt, New South Wales, Australia. It is the oldest museum in Australia, with a diverse collections such as Nature, Culture, and Wildlife. Access is easy via public transport. 2 hours is enough for a typical visit and more you need if interested to investigate deep. A lot of interesting options for children. Highly recommended.

Went specifically for the Lego exhibit and became members. It's a fantastic museum of Natural history and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. There seems to be a great deal more exhibits from our last visit pre COVID and it's lovely to be back to explore and see new. Members lounge was also a great way to rest before we entered the Lego exhibit. Good coffee/hot chocolate machine and lots of variety of teas. Highly recommend.

The museum has some genuinely rare and special exhibits. It's collection of preserved Australian birds is impressive, for example. I'm not a fan of its occasional mixing of natural history with anthropological objects, but this approach isn't taken too often thankfully. The building is a fine venue for an intriguing and worthwhile series of collections.

Exhibition: RAMSES And The Gold Of The Pharaohs Pros: We were fascinated and delighted at the way it was set out. The staff were so helpful and friendly and smiling. Quite rare to see nowadays and it made the whole experience even better. The videos, the educational aspects, the layouts and the artifacts themselves were absolutely fascinating and perfectly done. VR Experience: AMAZING it is well worth the extra dollars to go and experience this. We had looked forward to this for quite a while, but we're a bit skeptical about how it was going to be set out. We were definitely impressed! The gift shop had some beautiful items in it too. Make sure you take some extra cash so that you can buy something to take home to remind you of this great experience Getting there: We parked out on the street but it would probably be advisable to get there via public transport as parking could be difficult. Trains and buses are very close to the venue. The museum itself is such a beautiful place. We can't wait to go back there to see another exhibition. Highly recommended it! Oh! I did the pros but, I forgot the cons... The truth is I can't really find any. The only thing that I could say is that there doesn't seem to be that many food or drink options there and parking is not the best. But the whole experience was a 10 out of 10 for me

I love the museum. Only drawback was the Egyptian exhibition. I can understand why they limited the numbers. However, this didn't stop a crowd of people trying to cut into the queue ahead of me! I had purchased the ticket for the required time. Once inside, the exhibition didn't didn't disappoint! Lots of very interesting artefacts and historical facts. It was very busy inside and unfortunately a few rude patrons crowded some exhibitions right up to the glass making it near impossible to see them without waiting extra time for them to move on. Crowds aside, it was still an enjoyable experience I highly recommend everyone to visit the museum.

My husband & I caught the train to Town Hall station to get to the Australian Museum & found it a very easy 7-8 min walk, through a beautiful park. We hadn't visited for probably 10+ years and recent renovations are of the highest standard. The exhibits such as the Dinosaurs, were World Class and we enjoyed every second of the 2hours there. Although have to say, the Cafe was way too noisy with all the young children & school kids playing in and around the venue. Our 2nd favourite exhibit, is the current Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year 2021! We would highly recommend this also free display & I will not add any photos (apart from the entrance to it) in respect of the Artists, as my photos do none of them justice 10/10 📸

Australian Museum has always been a family favourite, with so many wonderful displays and interactive features. The little children run around from huge dinosaur displays, to sit down science experiments. There's definitely a full day of exploring to be done here, best advice is be early and expect a long day.

Free entrance except for the shark display. It's an interesting place if you're into wildlife and nature. All of the exhibits here had descriptions and some even had touch and feel features. Especially loved the dino exhibit.

Went for the Ramses Exhibition, which I would recommend buying a ticket online for, as it we waited 2.5hrs (our fault entirely). The exhibition was great! Too busy, and they probably should’ve put the artefacts higher up along with the text so more people could see them when crowding was happening, but it was an amazing collection.

Very informative museum. A bit disappointed on the dinosaur exhibit as the place was too dark to even read some of the info. I had to brighten the phone settings. The place is well maintained and clean. Staff at each exhibit is present to provide more info. Staff were all smile and frienly. Cafe at the second floor, great food selections and coffee. Lots of table. Shops at the entrance, lots of stuff for kids to buy.

It was a wonderful experience. We went for the Rameses Egypt exhibition and everything was amazing. The artifacts, information and pictures were all very nice. The museum in general, was so massive that we did not get to see everything in one day. Therefore we'll definitely come here again.

Truly enjoyed the 'Unsettled' exhibition on how the First Nation peoples lived in this continent for about 30,000 years. You will also learn about the recent history of Australia including the massacre. I strongly recommend this powerful exhibition. There is also the best photographer of the year exhibition - The Australian Geographic Nature. That was fascinating too!

The Australian National museum is a great place to visit during the holidays or on the weekend. There was no wait time and you can buy tickets at the front desk on the day of. They are able to provide sunflower disability lanyards that mean that you are able to exit the exhibit and come back in at any time. The exhibits were very interesting and you were able to interact with some. Overall a lovely place to visit with family, friends or just on your own.

Fantastic museum with plenty to do. We visited during the showing of Ramses II and had a look around at the other areas afterwards. We loved seeing all the Australian birds and the dinosaur a section as well. There is a fun area for the kids to play and to have something to eat. Heaps of toilet facilities. Wheelchair and pram friendly. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Great day outing at the Australian Museum. Perfect activity to keep family entertained especially now the general entry is free. The museum has recently been renovated. There is also a free Australian Geographic photo exhibition currently (Jan 2021) at the museum. The restaurant on Level 4 is a great place to stop for lunch also. Restaurant is called “No 1 William”. Great views and you can reserve a table online also.

Absolutely loved the visit! Such an amazing collection. Worth every minute spent and admiring everything. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Would love to go back again someday as it would take you easy 3-4 hours to see everything in the museum. The birds section was something that I would like to spend more and more time into. Absolutely love this museum. The Sharks exhibition is 100% worth the money and has some great interactive displays as well as being hugely informative. The other exhibits were great, our favourite was Wild Planet. The cafe was nice. It was clean and the food was tasty, definitely Sydney prices but not ridiculous. The staff in the gift shop were particularly lovely and took great care to wrap the crystals we purchased. This was a birthday treat for both me and my child and it was everything we wanted, will definitely be revisiting when there are any new exhibits. Also as a queer person I really loved the Pride Sharks ❤️🏳️‍🌈🦈

I enjoyed Australian Museum especially Minerals. But most people would like to see the dinosaurs. There seems a natural history museum. And there are some spaces for kids and parents. But if you are looking forward to see some paintings, don’t go.

I was hoping to find out some history about Australia, the first fleet, Captain Cook, the life of the convicts, the interaction with the first nation, ... I was very disappointed by the museum... There is a room with dinosaurs... an autopsy of a T-Rex... lying there with his legs cut off... pretty traumatic for kids if you ask me... There is a room with birds of Australia... There is a room 'Surviving Australia' where they tell you you do not really have to be scared of the Australian wildlife... There is a stuffed Wallaby... a few artefacts... Did I learn ANYTHING new from this museum... no... nothing... If this is the Australian Museum, I pity Australia... There is such a rich and colourful history... you will not learn anything about it here... Give it a miss unless you need the toilet or need to shelter from the rain...

We even get to see the autopsy of a T.rex... How cool is that!!

Grand museum with a lot of themes. This 4 story building (only 2 story of exhibition, the rest of them either don't exist or serve food) is a must go for the local or the tourists who want to learn the Australian history. There are a room of collection, a hall about the natives, a grand hall of Australian wide life on the land, a room for the sea creatures, a room for the sky creatures, a room for creatures in the past, and more. I think it is a great place to spend a day, at least half a day if you are in a rush.

The Australian museum has something for everyone. It is an unique structure in itself with multiple levels catering to birds/aviary, history of Pacific Islanders and Aboriginals. The dinosaur exhibition is amusing and so informative. Loved by kids and grow ups alike. Plan your day as it takes 3 to 4 hours if you go visit all of it. Car park isn’t available so one has to park at Wilsons or Secure car park nearby. After the museum, head to St. Mary’s Cathedral and then to Hyde park for a casual walk. Plan to cover couple of spots to make the most of your outing. Cheers!

One of the best Museum you can visit in not only in Australia but in the World. Huge collection of birds, animals look like real. You will be wondering by the number of different animals/Birds living in Australia. Highly recommend. Must go place.

Great experience! I went specially to visit the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition, with Robert Irwin's works. The exhibition was so beautiful and high-quality and some of the photographs really truly touched my heart and transported me to incredible places. I recommend reading the photographers' comments with each photograph, rather than simply scanning and moving on. We had time to visit the 'Wild Places' exhibition before the museum closed, which showcased lots of animals and even a huge skeleton (of a whale?) suspended from the ceiling. It's really interesting to find out about all of these animals and to see them up close. Will be back for the dinosaur exhibition and more!

The newly renovated Australian Museum is beautiful. Lovely marble staircases contrasting with the historic sandstone building. Great play area for children and next to the cafe. The "Unsettled" exhibition about First Nation Peoples is a huge learning curve and not to be missed. The Innovations exhibition, "Spark" shows a better side of Australia.

Beautiful museum with great exhibits. We saw the unsettled exhibition and found it to be highly informative and positively confronting. Every school group and person who wants to learn about our shared history should make the time to visit.

Great place to visit, lots of interesting things to see and enjoy. I think children will enjoy the WILD PLANET exhibit. Got a chance to learn about Aboriginal history through the UNSETTLED exhibition.

We had a nice walk around. Lots to see, kids were loving the dinosaurs 😄 We are at the cafe which was reasonably priced.

As Australian as it gets. Many stuffed animals kangaroos, crocodile, snakes, spiders... dinosaurs. The building is beautiful and very convenient to move around. There is a small cafe inside next to a children's playground.

This museum is free entry. Best place if you are not sure where to take your kids during weekend. Many different things to explore and learn. Interactive with your kids here.

I always look forward to visiting the Australian Museum which is 5 minutes walk from where we stay when we come to Sydney. Each time I tell myself I should visit more often. It is always so impressive. This time we had a specific goal - experience the Unsettled exhibition. It took us over 1.5 hours and was truly emotive. The exhibition can be visited until January 27. I plan to bring my grandchildren during the summer holidays. I could not recommend this highly enough!

My son just loves this museum. I am super excited for the new interactive section thats coming.

Couldn't get through it all in the time we allocated, but everything we saw was amazing, informative and well laid out. Definitely looking forward to going back

  • 5/5 Lucy B. 2 years ago on Google
Fantastic experience! Wonderful staff wonderful informant and displays! We loved it so much we went twice, second time was on the weekend and the kids where a bit hectic. Ran over some feet and almost ran over some kids in my wheelchair. Unsure if we missed a sign, but both times we had to drive around the block to find accessible street parking. That would be my only let down for the place. The lack of parking.

  • 5/5 Craig K. 2 years ago on Google
Really amazed by the quality and how well everything is presented. This Museum was closed for renovations and you can see that they really thought about the new layout. You can learn so much about Australia but also other cultures and animals, it's a good blend of many topics but not overwhelming. It's a comfortable visit for a few hours and the kind place you would easily revisit to find more detail. Give yourself enough and equal time to make sure you see each of the main sections. That said maybe pick the main thing you want to see first, for example Dinosaurs. I'm definitely keen to go again! There is a cafe, drinking fountains, friendly staff and clean toilets.

The Long Gallery's 200 Treasures Collection is impressively diverse. Kids and adults alike thoroughly enjoy the dinosaur exhibits - humongous specimens indeed and ohh, those teeth..

  • 5/5 CAO X. 2 years ago on Google
many animals and art crafts to see, two hours is enough for a visit, good place to take the children. The traffic is also convenient.

Went specifically for the brickman expo. Great interactive experience which was thoroughly enjoyed by child and adult alike. The ticketing desk on the other hand could have been a bit more courteous and informative.

The Australian Museum is in the heart of Sydney CBD and from my understanding is quite old and heritage listed. We hadn’t visited before and had specifically come to show the kids the Brickman Jurassic World Lego display. We were not disappointed! The staff at the museum were helpful and friendly, bar one who seemed to be having a bad day. Overall we had a fun day and the adults had just as much fun, if not more, than the kids.

  • 2/5 Mat N. 1 year ago on Google
I think the name is larger than what you actually see inside. It is small in terms or size (despite the fact it was renovated recently) and has little bearing on Australia's history or natural beauty. The instructions and pieces presentations are a little somehow unclear, I would like to see the standard chronicle presentation we have seen in other museums. Indigenous Corner is pretty small and contains a lot of inaccurate information and missing historical gaps (especially during colonization), therefore it doesn't truly cover the stuff I was hoping to hear and see.

Very good place for kids to learn about Australia. It’s new and beautiful 🤩 free entry! Very good for talking kids to there very often to learn from time to time and without financial concern(pay tickets).

  • 4/5 Malenkaya-J. L. 1 year ago on Google
The Jurassic Park Lego Exhibition was nice to look around in. Shame that there was no internet connection around the area of the shop, made it difficult to do internet banking if you're wanting to buy something though. Recommended to definitely buy tickets in advance before you go see it as the lines can be a long wait to reach the Lego Gates.

Great place to take the kids these holidays and the best part about it is it’s free!!! There is a shark exhibition on at the moment which you DO have to pay extra for but the rest of the museum has plenty to see for no extra charge. The dinosaur section isn’t too big but it’s definitely enough to keep the kids entertained for a couple of hours at least. There is a cafe inside and a souvenir store too. If going by train get off at Museum station and follow the signs.

Awesome museum and very educational. I visited to see the dinosaur and the mineral exhibits but thoroughly enjoyed the rest. The autopsy of a T-Rex was a fascinating and creative way of showing our understanding of how dinosaurs looked. The wildlife exhibit was also enjoyable and the First Nations exhibitions were verge insightful.

Location of the museum is very good. Museum is not that big that I imagined but it was good enough for me. Many different sections in the museum and I was discovering museum about 1.5h. Museum was very clean and I dont have anything to complain about. Museum had free entrance.

Ohhh they have T. Rex fossil😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍and you get pet it💕💕shush dont tell anybody i told you so. Epic place, the skeletons are marvelous the show is endless and you get to see animals like giraffes and hippopotamus at their natural full size with their real bones. Its really worth the vis and getting to the jurassic area is another story you get to caress that rough bones and their eggs. Many other things. Also the cultural items displayed there are very cool and nice. Its really worth your visit

Wow, what a venue and the collections are stunning! We were there for Bilas: Body Adornment from Papua New Guinea and were not disappointed. Some of the most beautiful, intricate and detailed headdresses were on display showcasing the extraordinary diversity of plumage to be found there and indeed, anywhere in the world! Well worth the time spent there and I'd see it again. Great job on the curation!

Really good and educational place for kids. I felt this place is really as same as the one in UK. nothing is very unique and special but so many contents are in tuis museum. From animals to dinosaur, kid can see how it looks like and can even also learn a culture/custom of human being too. I can strongly recommend this place for family visitors.

Great place to visit if you have some time to kill in the city! Our baby loved crawling around in the kids area, and the displays were super interesting to learn some cool facts about Australia!

Great museum at the side of Hyde Park. Free admission when I visited. Large collection of Australian specimens, minerals, historical treasures and dinosaurs. Oldest museum of Australia, well conserved and with an extremely nice staff. Highly recommended!

It's a free entry which and can visit all the exhibition areas, which is a plus plus. There's one food stall and a big area for eateries or rest. I'm lucky enough to watch a performance organised by the Museum as well. Definitely a recommend place of visit

  • 5/5 Morgan B. 7 months ago on Google
We were pleasantly surprised to see free admission and so we did an optional donation to them instead. The exhibits gave a neat insight into various parts of Australia. The building is very nice and they have a Cafe for coffee and small snacks

Bilas Living Culture is must see. It is incredible. Papua New Guinea indigenous tribal images. Natural elements used with head pieces and body paint to blend in with their surroundings is just incredible and beautiful. It's on all through September.

Great way to spend a rainy day like we did. Plenty to see and keep occupied. Loved the interactive elements to the museum. The dinosaur section was impressive. Best of all free!! Would recommend to a couple of hours.

An interesting visit, especially seeing the many taxidermy animals and dinosaur reconstructions. Worth a visit if you’re in the area. It’s free!

Great museum to spend several hours. very interesting exhibitions which are changing over time, so maybe also with a second visit when coming to Sydney another time We spent like 2,5 - 3 hours in, and passed some exhibitions rather quickly without reading a lot of the notes so definitely take your time I can not speak about the prices because the museum was free of entryfee for some reason on that day

I visited the museum during the lapse they were installing a new display and therefore, a big section was closed, but was able to see great history and nature expos. All for free and in a great location in the city business district. I didn't pay to see the permanent collection, but it seems like there is need to book in advance for special displays.

The Ramses: Gold of the Pharaohs exhibition that has just opened at the museum is simply stunning. A wide selection of Pharonic treasures has been curated from immense stone statuary to tiny, delicate items of jewellery. All displaying the astonishing craftsmanship of the artisans three thousand years ago. The audio and video accounts of the Pharaohs, particularly Ramses are vivid and engrossing. A particularly interesting section is devoted to the lives of wives and daughters. Very highly recommended.

Great museum! Have been here a few times for different exhibitions over the years. Ramses & the Gold of the Pharaohs was by far the best and most interesting. A must see!

  • 5/5 Keith N. 4 months ago on Google
Ramses is a very impressive exhibition. There were plenty of guides around to help with questions and good use of videos & signs to explain the exhibits. General admission is free, but definitely buy tickets in advance for big exhibits like Ramses.

I would recommend anyone, who is visiting Sydney, must check this place. It’s free to enter and you can enter into the treasure of Australian culture and heritage. They arrange exhibitions time to time, which you might have to book online. Kids zone is fantastic. If you have a kid, they will love it. Moreover, there is little food places inside the museum in two floors- selling coffee and limited food items like cupcakes, sandwiches. They have a gift shop at the entrance, where you can buy souvenirs for yourself or for your loved ones.
