Located right on "Main" Street in downtown Ames, The Great Plains Sauce and Dough Company is the best pizza in Ames, period. Best pizza in Iowa. It's as good (better) than any pizza anywhere in the U.S. Locally owned, they've been around since 1979. Their award winning pizza is second to none! I got a thick Denver crust, Buffalo. Medium size (14"). Might seem kinda small, but this pizza weighed 4lbs!! So delicious, but why the honey? Thick crust Denver crust is a fresh made wheat crust. The crust itself is delicious. Eat your slice up to the crust, then put honey on the crust. This pizza has a delicious dessert built in!😃

We ordered delivery from here thinking that we would try a different local place for a stay at home date night! Needless to say that we were not impressed - we ordered a Sam’s Crust with black olives and Canadian bacon - the only thing you could taste was the bacon. The dough had absolutely no flavor and the sauce tasted exactly like the can of tomato paste I buy from the store. After reading through a few other reviews we learned that many others dip their pizza in honey?! Can’t say I’ve ever heard of doing that but if that was the standard for the pizza then we should have been provided honey as a side. After two slices we had to let the pizza go… and thus our date night money…rip.

Best pizza place in Iowa in my opinion. Great pizza, great service, comfy ambience and very affordable prices. Dinner for two was $18 plus leftovers! and free refills for soda too. The Denver thick crust is fantastic, and dont forget to add honey on the crust. Pizzas are very big so make sure you get a small for two people unless you're starving. Overall fantastic dining experience, with a great location on main street. Highly recommend!

I was seriously surprised by this place. I like to consider myself a pizza enthusiast if not even a pizza aficionado, but I've never run across this style of pizza before. The crust was a thick, dense, whole wheat bread topped with standard red sauce and mozzarella. But we were told by the excellent staff that the crust was meant to be dipped in honey! Honey bears were on each table and we tepidly tasted them. AMAZING! Clean restaurant, unbelievably helpful staff. Loved it.

This was my first visit. You have to place your order at the counter and return to the counter to pick your pizza up. It has a fun atmosphere. The people working there were friendly and helpful. The pizza is a cut above all of the common national chains. We ordered thick crust. I liked the crust. There was plenty of cheese. While I don't live in Ames, I would definitely eat here again and would recommend this place to my friends and family.

Pretty mid tier pizza. The best thing that can be said is that it is a real pizza with real handmade dough and real cheese. However the dough was incredibly dense and bland, both the whole wheat and white crusts. Plus there was no sort of crust glaze to make the bland crust taste more lively. The sauce was the saddest part tasting like tomato sauce straight out of the can with zero seasonings to speak of. There was an adequate amount of cheese but it felt like too much given that they only use mozzarela with no other cheeses mixed in to break up the stringy dense layer of cheese. All the components of a good pizza are there but there is no seasoning or flavor added to it which makes the steep price they charge unreasonable.

We have 4 kids. Makes you really appreciate the luxury of being served at a table. Fun place of your kids are older. Order and pickup at the counter. The crust wasn't anything over any other pizza joint we've tried. But the people were great and cheerful! Also, way to go with the whole dipping crust in honey!

One of my all time favorites of anywhere in the world. I moved to Ames on my 3rd birthday and have great memories of my mom picking me up from preschool before my sister in kindergarten got out, and going on our secret pizza run. To this day I always put honey on my pizza because of the habit instilled within by Great Planes. There's really no other way! Now I live in Virginia but always make sure to stop and relive the memory when coming back to visit family.

Great Plains Sauce & Dough is definitely a happy place for me. I have had pizza all over the United States, GP has my favorite. Friendly service and unique atmosphere are good ingredients for a great experience.

Super cute place, smelled great when we walked in, I think we should have gotten just a regular thin crust pizza. We got the Denver Crust, when I tell you this thing is heavy, I'm not exaggerating when I say that the large cheese pizza we got weighed every bit of 5lbs. It was good, loved the cheese, just a lot of crust.

Today, we had a large 10 custom pizza plus extras delivery order for a meeting. The entire order and every pizza was correct, on time, and delicious. Couldn't of asked for better service or a nicer delivery person having to lug in our large order. I hope management sees this and appreciates the great service and staff. Thank you!

Not sure there's much I can say that others haven't said already so I'll just restate the obvious- this place is phenomenal. Amazing pizza! Cool atmosphere! A must try if you haven't already. I'm not a huge wheat lover so I wasn't a fan of the thick wheat crust, but we also got a thick white crust and that was right up my alley. Can't wait to go back!

Got the Prarie special on the thick Denver crust. This is a whole wheat version of the bready crusts mi mama used to make for my birthday, with the pepperoni in a smiley face cuz she's an artist like that. But this one tasted more, herb-y? And they got the oven figured out to make it have a crust and still be chewy The Prarie special is your standard humble pie lineup of pep, mild sausage, onions and peppers, doused in a generous helping of very stretchy mozz. Grease level was adequate without pooling like a Casey's. Do wish they had a spicy sausage option.

Been visiting Great Plains since I was a freshman at ISU in 1988. It’s the best pizza I ever had. Get the thick crust wheat. Do not order extra cheese. Love the atmosphere and great service

Good pizza, totally unacceptable wait times. When ordering the staff should advise you how long of a wait it will probably be for you to get your pizza. We arrived at about 4:45 on a Wednesday afternoon and ordered a single pizza. It literally took 1 hour and 8 minutes before it came out for us. Really? If we had been told upfront the wait was going to be that long we would have just said thanks, we'll come back another time. Instead, we had the joy of sitting at a table for more than an hour with nothing but our drinks. Very frustrating.

Love the lunch option to buy per slice. We have a larger family and don't always agree on toppings. Everyone gets what they want and the pocket book is happy too! Staff was very friendly and happy to answer any questions. Will definitely be back!

There is a reason they’ve been voted best of Story county pizza year after year. It’s because their pizza is amazing. Everyone goes here for their wheat thick crust…but honestly try their thin crust, it is AMAZING!!

Great Plains is my favorite pizza place. I always get the Denver style crust. Anytime I'm in Iowa, I make sure to stop by here at least twice. I only wish I could franchise this place out to the West Coast so I could eat it anytime.

My favorite is the thin Denver (wheat) crust. My kids have love the thick crust and dipping it in the honey. Stop in for a lunch slice of the day. Cinnamon roll sticks a hidden gem.

It is a very good pizza place in downtown Ames. They have a classy ambiance depicting their long old heritage and all the awards and appreciations they have received so far. Their pizzas are really good, fresh and served piping hot.

Ordered late on our way down the night before a football game. Was ready and warm upon pickup and staff was very friendly Ordered the following night for delivery, gave us a 90 minute timeline, showed up shortly after the timeline, delivery gal was great very nice and apologetic- pizza was still delicious with just a bit of reheating.. Very well done - we love Great Plains!

Our family eats here often. Great pizza and a crust you won't find anywhere else. We have gotten food for dine in and delivery and either way it's fresh and delicious. Great place for lunch when you can buy pizza by the slice. Don't forget to grab one of their homemade cookies!

All I can say is that Great Plains Sauce & Dough Pizza is some of the best pie we've had. EVAH. Been here a few times, but first time for a review. As with many of my reviews, I try to pick something about our dish that sets it aside from similar entre at any other (pizza) restaurant in town. In this case, it's the crust. Great Plains offers a variety of styles, and we like the "Denver" medium with 3 toppings, Canadian Bacon, Sausage, Pepperoni. (picture) Yep, we took half of it home for supper tomorrow. Here's where I knock 1, maybe 1.5 stars off my overall rating for Great Plains. THE RESTROOMS. They're down one flight on narrow stairs, then left turn to the 2 rooms. The restrooms themselves were clean, but I felt bad for this guy who looked to be in his late 70's who was walking up the steps as I got up from my booth. He was with his wife, who was helping him, and I wished I'd seen him go DOWN the steps so I could have helped him come back up. Now, I realize this is an old building and pbly little or no room for renovation. But what ya think Great Plains?

Visiting Ames and saw this place had a ton of great reviews so had high hopes. Honestly, I've had better frozen pizza from the grocery store. The Crust is extremely bland. It tasted like the ones I had in the pizza lunchables as a kid. The taco pizza was especially disappointing. I didn't realize the honey on the tables was for the crust so maybe that would have helped? The cheese and toppings were good, but man was the crust oddly bad. I'm guessing this place was an institution that has just lost it's quality overtime. The inside ambience is cool though!

First time was amazing, but they haven’t been able to replicate that experience. Last pizza barely had any sauce and the dough tasted like alcohol or some type of cleaning agent.

An Ames institution for as long as I can remember. The pizza is filling, particularly if you get the tradional, thicker crust; some people don't like this crust as much as other kinds. The seating area is interesting, and has multiple levels.

Wonderful pizza with an Iowan spin. Hearty crusts and great cheese. Six different crust choices that are all amazing. 3 thin crust and 3 thick crusts. Pizza by the slice from 11-2 mon-sat makes it a lunch spot for me.

My favorite pizza ever, particularly the thick Denver crust! Some people LOVE the thick Denver wheat crust and some people dislike it with a passion. To me it’s the best pizza I’ve ever had..especially dipping the crust in honey. My wife doesn’t like it so much. The thin crust will be good for anyone. Great atmosphere. Great service. Anytime I’m in Ames I try to hit up Great Plains.
