وقتی صحن عتیق(انقلاب) در دوره صفوی و با طرح «شیخ بهایی» ساخته شد، «ملا محسن فیض کاشانی» که حکیم، فیلسوف، عارف و شاعر آن دوره بود، پیشنهاد داد برای کسانی که به هردلیل نمی توانند وارد حرم مطهر شوند و کنار ضریح بایستند، فضایی طراحی شود که بتوانند در نزدیک ترین فاصله از ضریح مطهر، بایستند وبتوانند ضریح امام رضا (ع) را ببینند و زیارتنامه بخوانند. بنابراین پنجره‌ای فولادی در محلی که مشرف به ضریح مطهر بود نصب شد و از آن به بعد به «پنجره فولاد» معروف شد. یکی از نکات قابل توجه درباره پنجره فولاد این است که پنجره نصب شده از دوره صفویه، پنجره فعلی حرم مطهر نیست و پنجره فولاد فعلی، سومین پنجره فولاد نصب شده در حرم مطهر است. پنجره فولاد اول، تا زمان حکومت ناصرالدین شاه قاجار در صحن انقلاب وجود داشت. پنجره فولاد پنجره‌ای از جنس فولاد که در نزدیک‌ترین مکان به ضریح در صحن انقلاب کنونی (کهنه و عتیق سابق) در حرم امام رضا(ع) نصب شده است. نخستین بار این پنجره در سال ۸۱۷ق به‌دستور شاهرخ تیموری، فرزند و جانشین تیمور گورکانی، نصب شد. هدف از نصب این پنجره این بود افرادی که عذر دارند بتوانند ضریح را از پنجره‌های مشبک ببینند و زیارت‌نامه بخوانند؛ اما پس از مدتی به سبب شفای بیماران و حاجت گرفتن افراد، به محلی برای رجوع همه زائران تبدیل شد. در دوره قاجاریه و با دستور ناصرالدین شاه، پنجره جدیدی از جنس برنز برای این محل در نظر گرفته شد. پس از انقلاب اسلامی ایران نیز پنجره فولاد قبلی با پنجره‌ای از جنس برنز و روکش طلا تعویض شد. برای حرم دیگر ائمه و امام‌زاده‌ها همچون امام علی(ع)، امام حسین(ع) و حضرت معصومه(س) نیز پنجره فولاد ساخته شده است.
