One of our best hikes we've done. It's challenging and demanding but the view is worth every step! You have to be fit to do this hike. Make sure to reach the summit before sunrise as the colours are amazing! It's gets really cold on the summit so make sure to take some warm clothes and jackets. We've done it twice and if we have the change we would do it again. 100% recommend

This was on my bucket list of regional mountains to summit and I finally succeeded after an earlier attempt in 2009 was curtailed because the volcano was active. This was a HARD hike and one needs to be reasonably fit. It takes about 6 hours of steady hiking to reach the crater rim (mine was at Sembalun) to camp for the night. We set off for the summit at 1.15am. The summit trail (about 4 hours) comprises 3 stages. The uphill descent from the campsite is soft gravel and volcanic ash, a precursor to the final brutal stage. This wasn't so bad as there are big rocks and trees to hang on to. The next stage was firmer ground and not as steep as you walk along a ridge line. The final stage was steep and soft gravel where you take 3 steps forward and slide 2 steps back. Very demoralising but it can be overcome. The views from the summit were spectacular, do try to arrive before sunrise (around 5.45am). Please enjoy my photos of the scenes from the campsites and summit. 10/10 will recommend but NOT suitable for the very young, unfit or disabled.

The most Amazing experience. It was a tough climb for me but extremely rewarding. Words and pictures cannot express the beauty of the place. Having my evening meal above the clouds at 2600mts will be a memory forever. If Rinjani is on your mind do not hesitate to do it. It's a life experience that you will never forget.

This is not an easy hike, don't take it lightly! Yes, you have a guide as it's mandatory (even though I don't think someone will stop you if you want to go alone, compared to Batur or other mountains in Indonesia) but he will not carry you down the mountain, not does anyone warn you how demanding this hike is. Keep in mind that you climb and descent 2700 m in more or less 24 hours and that above 3000 m the lack of oxygen will get to you. The last hundred meters are a mental battle as you ascent really slowly, one step at a time. We were the fastest group that morning and we could see everyone struggling and only few people reaching the top. Had it been a windy day I'm pretty sure we would have turned back as we weren't properly equiped, the temperature easily gets below 0 and nobody warns you about this (it's pretty obvious given the altitude but we've seen people that have never hiked before so I thought it was worth mentioning). Warnings aside, the mountain is very beautiful and the view from the top breathtaking. Unfortunately it is full of trash, I've never seen so much trash on a mountain and the guides and porters keep saying that it the local's people fault. However, they don't do anything to clean the place and I'm afraid they also contribute, even if they claim they take all the trash down. It's such a shame that such an amazing place visited by so many tourists, both local and foreigners is in such bad shape. Also, the tour companies charge a fortune for what they offer and I really wish there was a way that the money we pay be used to conserve this beautiful natural park.

This was an unplanned adventure. Joined the trek the night before. Had originally signed up for a 2 nights and 3 days trek thinking that I will take my time reaching to the summit. Turned out that was a fundamental misunderstanding on my part - you reach the summit next morning, just like everyone else, but then you have 2 additional days of trekking to get to the lake in the valley and then back up. After getting to the peak I decided I had enough of the mountain and came back the next day. Beautiful views of lake, valley, and crater. Cooks made decent lunch and dinner along the way. Overnight stay at the base camp was memorable, although I barely slept. Thankfully didn’t have to use toilet because toilet at base camp was really just a hole in ground surrounded by a tent. Descent from the mountain was just as treacherous as going up, with ankle deep loose gravel and thick layer of mud most of the way.

Absolutely beautiful and comically difficult to summit. Really the only downsides are watching the porters heroically carrying 30+kg loads on wooden planks in their shoulders while making sub-minimum wages and the sheer amount of rubbish and toilet paper left behind by visitors. Please bring warm clothes and your sleeping bag to the summit, pack out your trash and tip your guide and porters generously (they deserve it!)

It has been 3 years since our last "serious" volcano trek, so we knew we would suffer. Well, it was hell, especially the part before the summit (the "E"path) . Is it worth the pain? A 1000 times. We were lucky to have great weather, no wind, so conditions were optimal, we did great pictures, our guides Fatan and Heri and our porter Cana, are Supermen, supercool, and super cool. This park is a national treasure, and Indonesians are so lucky to have such beauty at home. That brings me to the second part of the review, which is the trash problem. Although there are rules and systems telling people to bring back their trash (which some dutifully do, like our guides ), there are countless others who don't give a sh_t about it. Every campsite has mounts of trashes spread around. You can't walk without seeing plastic cups here and there. The lake campsite is especially bad, with the edges of water littered with plastic half burnt (cup noodles, plastic glass, wrapping). There is not a single spot along the trek, that is pristine. Why can't there be some rangers, stationed on site, to enforce that people keep the area clean? We hear that some people are banned because they don't being back their trash , but for 10 people that are banned, you have 1000 people who escape . When we were at the lake, the tent beside us was roasting fishes on some fire lit with plastic trash. Of course the black smoke was blowing in our direction. Nobody seem to care. It's a national treasure, a world unique park . People who throw any trash should be ashamed of doing so. Well, my anger is that big because it's such a splendid wild site, with views that you can't have anywhere else in the world. My eyes are watering when I think about this carpet of clouds lingering below the summit, or the mist covering the surrounding peaks and suddenly disappearing at the Sembalun camp site when it's sunset. All this pain in my legs are forgotten. Only great pictures and memories are remembered.

Exceptional trek from tetebatu, with a good part starting in the jungle (cooler trek as there is shade compared to the other side to the north). You need to plan to sleep one night so that you can climb a short section only in the morning from the last camp before seeing the sunrise at the top. The wind can bring a lot of clouds or make them disappear in a short time. An exceptional lake at the summit.

The hike to the rim is worth the effort, not necessarily hard, but just long since you have to climb 2000 meters up from the starting point in Senaru. Plan 6 hours for going up and 4 hours for going down and take lots of water if you want to do it by yourself. Alternatively you can book a tour with an overnight stay at the summit. Bring warm cloth then since it is gonna be cold during night. Prices force there 1n2d tour should be somewhere between 1.2 and 1.5 million including guides, food, and accommodation in a tent at the summit.

Rinjani was an awesome experience! Warm & friendly locals to stunning vistas, great food and wonderful memories! Highly recommend the hiking company we went with Lombok Trekker! Their emphasis on safety and camping gear as well as great guides & porters made us feel safe and comfortable throughout the climb.

Such a magnificent mountain with a challenging trek, coupled with beautiful views - definitely a gem of Indonesia & a must visit for nature lovers. Recommended for individuals with good endurance & generally strong legs. I tried Sembalun - Torean route & highly recommend it!

Probably the most challenging hiking I have ever done in my life. Due to the Earthquake happened in 2018, the trail to the summit is closed for repair. Currently you can only hike up the the crater rim. I would definitely recommend any natural lover to vist this national part. But make sure you are physically fit.

Amazing and beautiful place.. Need lot effort to get summit. Hope when baby Ana grow up come here again with all her sisters 💕 Hiking here with Baby Ana and mommy August 2022. From Sembalun and down to Torean. 4 days 3 nights. Thanks to God save me and my family. Get to the top at 11 am, cloudy above the top. But clearly below. So we can get good spot. When way down, the mist is up to make condition cool. Alhamdulillah

This was amazing. The Rinjani is an easy to reach volcano. With 2000m up to the rim at about 2700m, with 10km, it takes only 2 days for such a beautiful place. Surrounded by the ocean, the view is amazing, with top of the class sunset/sunrise. The volcano by itself is magical, with the new volcano inside with the lake, and the summit above them. A must if you visit in Lombok.

If you don't have proper hiking gear or warm clothing, please do not go. I am avid hiker and this was a challenge even with proper gear. Cold nights. Sleeping on the rocky mountain ground in a tent. Early morning. Long days of treking. But... if you have everything... Go for it! The landscape is beautiful but there is a lot of trash everywhere.

The peak is totally worth the effort, it’s not easy to reach it, if you are not in decent physical shape you will suffer or take very long. The camp is very dirty though.

Worth the HARD effort to reach the summit..this is not a simple Sunday morning hike and a lot of people fail to reach the top..you need to be determined to make it and a good level of fitness is needed, especially for the final push where you will be sliding backwards in the loose gravel fairly regularly...I made it to the top in 2hrs 45mins so it was freezing (wind-chill) up there waiting for the sunrise

  • 5/5 LK O. 1 year ago on Google
A really beautiful hike on a amazing trail. This should be in the list of mountains to hike for every serious hiker. Went there in August which is dry season. The ground is dry and some parts are quite loose and slippery. It is definitely colder during dry season so be prepared to stay warm at base camp and crater rim campsite.

Majestic mountain, scenic view via Senaru and Sembalun. Worth the effort to summit. I was so lucky, hiking Rinjani during pandemic. It was empty, good weather, full moon. Couldn't describe the gratitude of the Great summit! Beautiful beyond measure.

The Mount Rinjani trek is 100% worth the time and effort to complete. The ascent and descent are undoubtedly difficult, don't go with the intention of finding it easy because you'll be fooling yourself. I'd say taking hiking poles are essential to getting to the top personally, the weather can get treacherous up there. If I'd recommend just 1 tip it would be to bandage tape your little toe and big toe up to help the rubbing against the inside of your shoe. This should help alleviate the pain and blisters. The sense of achievement from completing this epic hike is out of this world.. I was the only one out of my group of 10 to complete it, because of the strong winds.. mind over matter and you'll get there. Good luck!!

Rinjani Park is nature in its best. Be ready for some epic effort as the climb to the top is not for the faint hearted! We did the 4 days 3 nights option with trekking down the to the lake and up to the caldera on the other side after scaling the Rinjani peak. Would have been more enjoyable to do an express trek to the top and back which is doable in 2 days and 1 night! Then chill in Lombok or the Gillis:)

  • 3/5 Javier Mas A. 6 months ago on Google
The trek is hard, the summit is crazy hard because the terrain is veeeery sandy, so it's like you're walking up a very steep dune for 3h (I'd skip it). The mountain is beautiful but it's sadly ruined to some extent because of the amount of trash left by everyone that goes through there. The lake is in a deplorable state. It needs to change. The conditions the porters are in are not decent for human beings. They carry so much stuff that could somehow be stored in the camping sites. A change is needed.

  • 5/5 Randy D. 4 years ago on Google
Beautiful mountain, the landscape of the route mostly consist of grassy plain. The temperature on the mountain is high, so it's better to bring additional water. There are highly amount of monkeys on the camping site, therefore it's better to bring a porter or guide to keep safe your tent while trying summit.
