Large and detailed exhibition; there is no part about WWII, it is just cut as if Catalonia was not part of Spain and there was no war action. It is history, there is nothing to be ashamed of. It is a shame the museum opted to skip it. Nice building and good view from a terrace

The museum is light from it’s type and the staff are very helpful. The ticket is so affordable for 6€. They give you a badge to stick on your jacket to be identified as the museum visitor as a hospitable sign from them. It starts from the early ages until now. I really liked how they focused on representing all the important events and incidents. May be the real historical monuments are not enough for such a museum but if you’re interested in history it’ll give you what you aim for. Thank you. 💙

This museum is not very touristic (that’s why the entrance fee costs only 6€). It is nicely set up, but it is more appropriate for local school kids, to learn the history of their area in an easy and interesting way.

Very detailed museum focused on early days of Catalonia. With themed installations. I don’t know why they stop story at 79. At least 92 Olympics are worth to mention, Barcelona got so many changes for this

Terrific museum to get an overview of the history of Catalonia. Really well laid out. Good mix of original artefacts, models, and reconstructions. A number of hands-on exhibits, sounds, and even smells! The free audio guide points out significant events, and there's a huge amount of written information too. The staff are delightful. You need a good couple of hours, but there's a restaurant to recover in!

The museum is in a popular location. are 2 floors of permanent exhibition and one with temporary. Did not have time for temporary one and from the permanent one the first floor was nicer and more interesting, the second one was too heavy and lots of political message. Cheap ticket.

Very nice museum, quiet and maybe a bit dark. And finally ending up having a cocktail on the rooftop. The view is amazing. We sat at the bar on the side where all highlights are mentioned on the railing.

Loved this museum! Went with my 4 y/o and he loved how interactive the main exposition is. We were able to try pieces of armor, mount a horse, lift how heavy a real armor was, and most importantly for a kid his age, push MANY buttons. Not everything is translated in English, but the free audio guide on the website was super interesting and there was a few languages available.

This museum is a gem. Give it 2 or 3 hours of your time. The only negative I would offer as a criticism is one that applies to many modern Archeological Museum e.g. the lighting is too dim. This museum is a peaceful oasis in a noisy, graffiti-laden, polluted city.

Given this much history, no surprise it’s huge. Includes excellent English translations. Great location. Take a break at 1881 rooftop resto upstairs overlooking the harbor. Artistically done while still accurate and thorough.

Generally a good local history museum that does its work in documenting & introducing the region's history. However there's still a couple of things worth mentioning. The ancient-medieval parts are fantastic, despite not that rich in the collection & display of original artifacts they do provide rich, well-organized, and well-curated information on the political, social and cultural development of Catalonia, with informative maps & graphs & models & interactive parts that help their audiences quickly immerse into the narrative and get a complete understanding of the contents. The modern parts, however, are relatively awkward due to a more dull and curt writing/translation style of the information as well as a lack of depths & contexts. Really wish this part could get some improvement so the museum would be a perfect destination for history lovers who wish to learn more about the fascinating and colorful past of Catalonia without the disturbance of tourist crowds!

Certainly deserves a five star - what a brilliant museum if you are interested in the history of Catalonia. Lots of little interactive exhibits to explore, English explainations throughout. There's also an interesting temporary exhibition showing at the moment (August) about dress making and design through time. Brilliant tiny gallery space for children to interact. Absolutely loved it. Up stairs on the top floor there's a terrace with fantastic views, restaurant is a bit on the expensive side for me, but I would recommend the view on it's own!

Nice building, but not things were functioning on a Sunday as other places may do. Very nice view from the terrace bar, but only serves alcoholic drinks and limited soft drinks. The exhibitions cost under 10E per visitor, and the displays are in both Spanish and English, but maybe not worth the money.

A very nice museum explaining the rich history of Catalunya. It is in deed a time travel as we go downstairs to learn more about the roman empire and all their extended domains. The layers of different constructions show how in each era the dominant power bilt over the destroyed buildings of the former power. Interesting to see the role of religion imduring the ages. Recommended, especially if one wants to avoid the crowds of tourists in the area.

This is actually an excellent museum. €6 for entry to the permanent exhibits. Tells you the Catalonia story from the stone age to the modern era. It has nice exhibits and is well laid out. Ease of locker rooms and toilets. Some interactive displays which will entertain kids and adults alike. Felt I understand Catalan and Barcelona better now. I would have given 5 stars if the museum is catered for foreign tourists. Not everyone can free read Catalan or Spanish. Only 50% of descriptions have English. Would be nice to have some seats in the display area. I spent 2 hours here and i wish that I could sit and look at the displays. Overall very worth the while going just like the Barcelona historical museum which focus mainly on the Roman era ruins.

GREAT museum, lots of information. Plaques in front of exhibits are in catalan, español, and english, but captions for a lot of photos/objects in the exhibit are in catalan only (see photos). There is a free audioguide with entry (accessible via your own phone/device on their website) that is available in several languages, but it summarizes a lot of the information rather than actually going through everything. That said being fluent in English & Spanish I didn’t find it difficult to determine what the photo captions in Catalan said from the plaque descriptions and other context. The museum has a lot of interactive exhibits and would be great for students or other young people. I am a history buff so I spent several hours there and could have easily spent a full day there, but it is a lot of reading (even if you only speak English/Spanish and are only reading the plaques). Exhibits cover from prehistory through to a modern day exhibit (claiming to cover until 2007 but much of it is still very relevant). There is a restaurant/café upstairs (one or both open depending on what time you go) which was good but slightly overpriced, as museum restaurants tend to be. We ate some tapas at the rooftop terrace, which had very very loud music playing and most seats in the shade were already taken when we arrived, so this may not be a good option for everyone. I am not sure if you could leave to get food and reenter, but you do receive a ticket and a sticker upon purchase, so I suspect you could reenter. Entry was 6,50€ for regular exhibits and temporary exhibits, and all employees I came across spoke English and Spanish (and probably Catalan but as I don’t speak it I can’t testify to that).

(Translated by Google) Since I was little I have loved visiting the museum. As a lover of history, I still visit it, it has a permanent exhibition that tells the history of Catalonia from prehistory to the present. With large explanatory panels and elements of the times that you can manipulate (try on an armor, for example), as well as assemblies with very well made mannequins and dresses following the patterns of the time they represent. Ideal for children, as it is very interactive, and for anyone who wants to know more, or in greater depth, the history of Catalonia.

It is a must if you want to learn about the Catalonia history, very interesting info from prehistoric times till today. There are two floors in the museum (accessible with wheelchairs also), try not to miss the second one (18th century - today). Reasonable pricing.

  • 4/5 Heather H. 2 years ago on Google
Very thorough history of Catalonia- from the beginning of time to current day. It explains the importance of preserving Catalonian history with a very moving explanation of it's past. I recommend flying through the 1st floor (excessive prehistoric exhibition- too long and why I didn't rate 5 stars) and taking your time in the 3rd floor (modern day) to get to the heart of the story.

If I could I would give it 6 years. It was one of the best museums I have been to. There are ways you can interact with the expositions and music you can play from the period you are looking at. I didn't expect it at all. The price is 4.50 euros for an adult and 3.50 for a student if you have an ISIC card. It was amazing and I would visit it again.

The permanent exhibit of the Catalonian history museum was closed. Instead of informing visitors before entering the queue they waited till the end to tell us, leaving only a photographic exhibition available to us and prolonging the queue quite unnecessarily.. Exhibits had no English text but left foreign guests reading a full wiki page via a QR code. I will read the page at home and never visit this museum again.

I went on Saturday after 3pm and it is FREE. Very good museum and I would highly recommend to visit it if you get a chance. You can download the app and bring your headphones for a free audioguide. Also there's a singer singing some nice songs and a nice cafe outside where you sit down and have a breathtaking view and enjoy the songs.

This museum is so great. It is so detailed and there's so much to learn and absorve, I was there for about 2 hours but I could've easily spent more time inside. The audioguide is free, you can use your phone to access it but remember to take your headphones. I really recommend this place to History geeks like myself.

A very interesting look in the history of a country that ultimately got screwed by their neighbours, the persistence of Catalan culture and the revival of modern Catalanism. It is definitely something to visit though be prepared to spend many hours to give it your full focus. I hope with the lessons presented in this museum that Catalonia is never again supressed and embraced in full.

This museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and culture of Catalonia. With exhibits ranging from prehistoric times to modern-day Catalonia, the museum offers a comprehensive overview of the region's history. We visited this museum on our last day in Barcelona and it was fascinating to discover how Barcelona was before its current identity of Iberian and Catalonian. Barcino was the name before Barcelona. Catalonia declares itself culturally unique in Spain, and protests have occurred even in recent years against the independence of the county.

A fascinating museum which is beautifully laid out and has very interesting exhibits. I especially enjoyed the recent history but thought that the 'ending' was a bit weak (has nothing happened in the last 30+ years?). The cost is very reasonable and the audio guide (on phone with free wifi) kept the pace up.

  • 5/5 Lawrence D. 4 months ago on Google
A large and excellent museum on Catalonia through all ages from 1100 or so. Everything in 3 languages. Over 3 floors. Well presented sequence of displays explaining Catalonia relationships with Spain, connection to the Moors right through to Spanish Civil war and Franco. High quality models, pictures and artefacts. Plenty for kids to push and pull touch and smell. Outstanding value for a few Euro.
