Mishkal Masjid is an almost 700-year old mosque that graces the skyline of the Kuttichira locality in Kozhikode. It was built by a wealthy Muslim merchant of the area in the earlier half of the fourteenth century. The Muslim population of the region have contributed greatly to the culture, architecture and the vibrant economy of the area over the centuries The Portugese had tried to burn down the mosque when they first came to India. It was partially damaged, and the partially ruined mosque was renovated under the Zamorin's aegis, the original 5-storey structure was reduced to a 4-storeyed one & was reopened in 1578-79. Like many Muslim structures in Kerala of that period, this mosque has neither domes nor minarets and relies heavily on timber, laterite & sloping tiled roofs.

Standing tall for almost 700 years, Mishkal Masjid graces the skyline of Kuttichira in Kozhikode. Constructed in the early 14th century by a wealthy Muslim merchant from the region, this historic mosque holds a significant place in the area's culture, architecture, and vibrant economy, thanks to the contributions of the Muslim population over the centuries. The mosque faced adversity during the arrival of the Portuguese in India, as they attempted to burn it down. While it suffered partial damage, the mosque underwent renovation under the Zamorin's patronage. The original five-storey structure was transformed into a four-storeyed one, and in 1578-79, it proudly reopened its doors. In keeping with the architectural style of Muslim structures in Kerala during that era, Mishkal Mosque forgoes domes and minarets. Instead, it embraces the use of timber, laterite, and sloping tiled roofs, creating a distinctive and elegant appearance.

Mishkal Masjid is a place of prayer for Muslims. Mosques are usually covered buildings, but can be any place where prayers (salah) are performed, including outdoor courtyards. The first mosques were simple places of prayer for Muslims, and may have been open spaces rather than buildings. In the first stage of Islamic architecture, 650-750 CE, early mosques comprised open and closed covered spaces enclosed by walls, often with minarets from which calls to prayer were issued.Mosque buildings typically contain an ornamental niche set into the wall that indicates the direction of Mecca and ablution facilities. The pulpit , from which the Friday sermon is delivered, was in earlier times characteristic of the central city mosque, but has since become common in smaller mosques. Mosques typically have segregated spaces for men and women. This basic pattern of organization has assumed different forms depending on the region, period and denomination.

The Mishkal Mosque, built in the 14th century, takes its name from its builder, Nakhuda Mithqal, who was a merchant from Yemen and had trade relations with Malabar. It is situated in Kuttichira, within the city limits. Instead of the Saracen architecture that is generally employed for the construction of mosques in the state, the Mishkal Mosque follows an architecture that is more of a temple. It is a structure that conveys the harmony and secular culture that this city has shown for centuries.

One of the oldest mosques in India is about 800 years old , it's described in the book of a famous traveller Ibnu Batuta, this mosque was built by a Yamani trader Na khuda Miskal and it is called Miskal masjid. The five storied building was attacked by the Portuguese and re-constructed with the help of Samuthiri (king of Kozhikkod) and it was reduced to a 4 floor building. It is an architectural wonder that survived more than 800 years !! Mainly teak wood is used for the construction of the mosque , it's a wonderful example of Kerala style of construction

A beautiful excerpt from history. Constructed around 750 years back, this historical monument is situated near Kuttichira. This mosque is still used by people. Around the mosque, one can spot numerous old traditional houses and this place would be ideal for someone who has an interest towards history. The mosque was once partly destroyed by the foreign imperial powers and it was a Zamorin king who helped restore the building. It's a must visit place in Calicut

Beautiful mosque with a unique design unlike any other masjid I have visited. It is only open at prayer times, so it is not really practical to visit the inside unless you wish to pray (men only). You can walk around the grounds at any time and it is really worth doing for the peaceful surroundings and such interesting architecture.

It was rebuilt in 1578/79 after the 1510 arson and now has four stories.Typical for similar medieval mosques in Kerala, it has no cupolas and minarets and heavily employs timber.A large tank known as the Kuttichira tank is attached to the mosque. Mishkal Mosque in Kuttichira is one of the oldest mosques in Kozhikode. This four-storeyed structure supported by wooden pillars proudly proclaims the architectural splendour of yesteryears. In 1510, the Portuguese burnt down some parts of it, but the charred portions still remain. The mosque is named after the rich trader who built it.

The place is so calm and relaxing and live at the same time. There's a beautiful pond infront of the mosque. Sitting arrangements have been given near the pond.
