One can feel Great ambience and peace in this temple by visiting the temple early in morning. It gives us that positive fresh vibes of the rising sun. This Vadakkunnathan Temple is one of the oldest and largest temples of Kerala. It is situated in Thrissur, an important religious town of the state. It is considered to be the first among the 108 Shiva temples established by Parashuram (avatar of vishnu) in Kerala. This temple is more than 1000 years old. The priciding diety (lord Shiva) looks like different than the common Shiva idol. The Shiva idol is tall and covered with a golden harams. Has seperate shrines for Lords Krishna, Ayyapa amond others. The dress code for men is they need to remove their shirts and also kids below 1 year are not allowed inside this temple. There is a vast area for parking here. Outside the temple there is a big ground where there was a exhibition when I visited last week. Must visit temple in thrissur, easy to reach from thrissur railway station(1km). Opposite to this temple there is another big temple for bhagavthi amman to visit as well.

The renowned Vadakkumnathan temple is one of the oldest temples in Kerala. Situated in the heart of Thrissur town, it is admired for its unique architectural structure, made purely in wood and stone. Situated in a nine-acre walled patch of green, it received the ‘Award of Excellence’ at the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

Vadakkunnathan Temple Vadakkunnathan Temple, also known as Thenkailasam and Vrishabha Chalam, is one of the largest and ancient Shiva temples in Kerala and India. It is located in the heart of Thrissur city, is a classic example of the Kerala style of architecture. Vadakkunnathan temple is surrounded by a massive stone wall enclosing an area of nearly 9 acres (36,000 m2). Inside this fortification, there are four gopurams each facing north, the temple theatre, known as koothambalam, has no parallel to cite anywhere else in the world. The four magnificent gateways called gopurams and the lofty masonry wall around the temple quadrangle are also imposing pieces of craftsmanship and skill in South, east and west directions. Deities of the sacred shrines are Lord Paramashiva, Parvathy, Sankaranarayana, Ganapathy, Sri Rama and Sri Krishna. The Vadakkumnathan temple is renowned for its murals paintings and carvings. The central shrines and Koothambalam shows perfect example of design and sculpture in wood. Myth shows that Parasurama constructed this temple. The vast area in and around the temple is the location of 'Thrissur Pooram', the superb temple spectacle in Kerala in Medam April - May which attracts lakhs of people. But the pooram is celebrated by mainly other two temples and the deity; the Vadakkunnathan is not taking part in the festival or in the Procession. The main attraction of the pooram is the Elanjitharamelam, and Kudamattam. Photo By Viswas Menon (c) Viswas Menon Write up compiled by Viswas Menon

Sri vadakkunnathan temple ..the centre of attraction and pilgrimage..the abode of Sri vadakkunnathan or Lord Shiva. Thrissur or ThriShivaperur gets its name from the Lord Shiva. The temple is one of the 108 Shiva temples established by Parasurama. The temple complex is around 9 acres and occupies on a small hillock.Situated in the city centre with the popular swaraj ground circumferencing it, is this temple where the famous Thrissur pooram takes place annually. Depicting several mural paintings from the Mahabharata on its walls, the temple has been constructed in typical Kerala style of architecture. The four gopurams face the four cardinal directions . The main diety is a Shiva lingam which is not visible due to the layers of ghee poured during the abhishekam. Subdieties of many gods and goddesses and nagas occupy the complex. The chief festivals include Maha Shivarathri, Aanayoottu and the famous Thrissur pooram. Around 20 Tuskers line up amidst huge pomp and show, with the melam or orchestra, during the pooram festival. Lord Vadakkunatha , goddess Paramekkavil devi and Thiruvambadi Krishna meet during the festival.kudamattom or the Changing of colorfully designed umbrellas is a mesmerising , must- see element of pooram.

Thrissur district in Kerala is known for its rich culture and heritage. Being the place that hosts Thrissur Pooram, the festival of festivals, Thrissur also has many other reasons to be proud of. Several unique attractions like Vadakkunnathan Temple, Punnathur Kotta (Palace of elephants) and Kalamandalam make the district one of the culturally strong places in Kerala. Vadakkunnathan Temple, or Vadakkumnathan Temple, in Thrissur is one of the most popular temples in Kerala. It is believed to be the first Shiva temple built by Lord Parasurama who is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This temple is however one of the UNESCO recognised heritage sites. The temple is also known as Thenkailasam or Vrishabhachalam. The temple is built in typical Kerala style architecture, located on a hillock in the heart of Thrissur city. Standing tall in the centre of 9 acres of land, the temple doesn't fail to grab attention of the passers-by. There are 4 gateways called gopurams to the temple facing East, West, North and South respectively.Vadakkumnathan Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva at city of Thrissur, of Kerala state in India. This temple is a classical example of the architectural style of Kerala and has one monumental tower on each of the four sides in addition to a kuttambalam. In the year 2012 the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has recommended 14 sites, including Vadakkumnathan Temple and palaces, from Kerala to include in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The temple is also the first one among the 108 Shiva Temples in ancient Kerala, established by Parasurama.Legends regarding the origins of the Vadakkumnathan Temple are briefly narrated in the Brahmanda Purana and these legends are referenced in some other works as well. Though these accounts differ with respect to certain details, they are all in agreement regarding the central theme that the temple was founded by Parashurama. According to lore, Parashurama exterminated Kshatriyas in twenty-one cycles. In order to cleanse himself of the negative karma of these deeds he performed a yajna at the end of which he gave away all the land to Brahmins as dakshina. He wanted to retire to a new land to perform meditative penance (tapasya) and thus requested the Lord of the oceans Varuna to bring forth a new piece of land from the waters.According to another version, some sages approached him at the end of the yajna and requested him to give them some secluded land. Parashurama then requested Varuna on their behalf. Varuna gave him a winnow (surpa) and asked him to hurl it into the sea; as he did so, a large area of land was brought from the sea; this region of land that arose from the sea become Kerala. It was then known by the name "Surparaka", from the word, "Surpa" meaning winnow. According to some other accounts, Varuna asked Parashurama to hurl his axe into the sea. Parashurama now wanted to consecrate this new land. So he went to Mount Kailasa to his guru, Lord Shiva and requested him to take abode in Kerala and thereby bless the region. Shri Shiva accompanied by his wife Parvati, his sons Ganesha and Subrahmanya and his parashadas went along with Parashurama, to oblige his disciple. Shiva stopped at a spot, which is now Thrissur, for his seat. Later he and his party disappeared and Parashurama saw a bright and radiant Shiva lingam (non-anthropomorphic icon of Shiva) at the foot of a huge banyan tree. This place where Shiva manifested his presence as a lingam is known in Sanskrit as the Sri Moola Sthana. Entrance into the inner temple is through a passage through the corridorMaha Shivaratri is the main festival which is celebrated in the temple.Cultural and musical programmes are held in the temple premises. Around one lakh temple lamps (hundred thousand)are lighted in the festival. The idol of Vadakkumnatha is not taken out for procession. On this day, there will he continuous abhishekam with ghee and tender coconut. The temple is not closed in the night, and there will be special poojas with abhishekam on the day.

Thrissur Pooram festival is considered as superior in aspects of Vadyam and Vedikettu [both malayalam word], across kerala. This festival, during May of every year, happens in the temple ground surrounding this temple. Epic stories says that Lord Krishna and Goddess Durga come to visit Lord Shiva (Vadukkumnathan) and hence this festival. A visit inside this temple [ outside the sanctum sanatorium]is mesmerizing.

I recently visited Vadakkumnatha Temple in Thrissur and was overwhelmed with the peace and sense of serenity the temple emanates. From the moment you enter the temple complex, you can feel the positive energy the place has. The whole atmosphere of the temple is filled with respect and reverence and the architecture of the temple is beautiful with ornate carvings and sculptures. The temple has a large number of devotees who come to seek blessings from the presiding deity and the priests are very knowledgeable and helpful. Overall, it was a great experience and I highly recommend visiting this temple if you are in Thrissur.

Vadakkunathan! This is the name which has been given to Lord Shiva in the city of Thrissur, Kerala, India. The Vadakkunnathan temple is the first temple which was created by Lord Parasurama. The temple located at the heart of the city of Thrissur is enclosed by colossal walls of stone under an area of around eight acres. The four directions, East, West, North and South in the temple have been indicated by four Gopurams inside the temple premises. In the centre of the temple there is multi shrined complex, besides the four Gopurams. The three key shrines of the temple have been dedicated to the Vadakkunatham or Lord Shiva, Lord Rama and Shankaranarayana. Lord Shiva who in the hunter form called as the Vettekkaran, besides other places is also worshipped in the Nalambalam area. As per the archaeological findings, Vadakkunathan temple is one of the oldest temples of the Southern India and is the largest temple of the Kerala which is dedicated to worshipping Lord Shiva. This religious place is an extraordinary example of the classical Kerala style of architecture featuring outstanding murals of the 17th century echoing the story of Mahabharata. The wood carved vignettes are displayed in the Koothambalam and shrines. One interesting thing about the temple is that it is believed to be the place where Tipu Sultan camped, though this fact has been associated with many disputes and many historians have not supported the idea.

The temple is known for the rare murals portrayed here that include scenes from Mahabharatha. One for the strange aspects of the temple is that the Ghee offered here for centuries doesn't melt, even in scorching summers. It is also believed that if the ghee covering the linga melts, that would lead to a massive disaster. There are no specific festivals of the temple. However, during Shivaratri, the the temple is lit up with one lakh lamps. This is known as "Lakshadeepam" which is a major offering here during Shivaratri. Aanayoottu, or the feeding of elephants, is another major festival observed here. Though the temple does not take part in Thrissur Pooram, the festival is held at the temple premises.

It's an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in city of Thrissur. The temple is situated in the very centre of town. Thekkinkadu Maidan, encircling the Vadakkumnathan Temple, is the main venue of the renowned Thrissur Pooram festival. It's one of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The main deity of the temple is Lord Siva, other idols installed in the temple are those to Sree Parvati, Ganesha, Sankaranarayana and Sree Rama. Parvati, is sanctified in the sanctum of Lord Shiva itself in the opposite direction. There are separate sanctums for Krishna, Rishabha, Simhodhara, Dharma sastha Vettakkara, Dharmasastha, Naga Devatas and Adhishankara on the circumambulatory path. If you are coming here you have to give time for yourself because to pray and see all the places in the temple itself takes 2 hours and above, it's that much beautiful and calm . It is very peaceful to sit here. As it is situated in the middle of the city,if we enter inside the temple there is no such kind of city noise and disturbance, it's full of peace, chirping of birds, etc. Churidar for ladies are allowed here, there are no restrictions for that kind of dresses but for gents Lungi, trousers are not allowed here. The temple is very near to the railway station you can either walk or take a rickshaw, it costs just 40/_ only.

Men will have to wear the traditional dress( dhothi) without shirt and ladies can wear saree and churidar.

Heritage temple, big festival and grand function name of pooram on every year. Sivan is main lord, ayyappan, sankara chariya, vinayagar, amman are here. In kerala we need to remove shirt before entering temple, mens should wear vesti and woman should wear saree. Parking facility available, restroom not available.

Sri Vadakkunnathan temple at Thrissur is a must visit temple. It is an ancient Shiva temple in a sprawling typical Kerala temple architecture campus having few other deities of God's such as Lord Ganesh and Lord Srirama and others. There is also a statute for Adi Shankaracharya near the entrance. We could also spot two majestic elephants grazing near the temple, belonging to the temple.

One of the top 5 temples that I been to over there near to 5 decades of existence. Serene, peaceful, spiritual...what these days temples often miss out on because of the over indulgence with sermons, ceremonies, clutter...Vadakkunnathan really stands out with the vast expanse of space, the spread of historical exuberance and overall connectivity to the magnetism from the energy centre it was meant to be! You feel transcended to another world at corners where you truly disconnect from the immediate present and surroundings and immerse into that infinitum. I am not sure where all I will visit next time when I am in Thrissur, Vadakkunnathan will definitely be one I won't miss

Architectural Marvel: The temple's architecture is a testament to ancient craftsmanship and intricate design. The majestic entrance gate adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant colors welcomed me into a world steeped in history. The main shrine, dedicated to Lord Shiva, boasted an impressive Dravidian-style structure with intricate sculptures and detailed embellishments. Each corner of the temple was meticulously crafted, showcasing the skill and devotion of the artisans who brought this architectural marvel to life.

The vadakkumnathan temple, which is situated in the heart of the Thrissur city is nothing but an architectural splendour, a perfect depict of Kerala’s rich culture and heritage… it attracts a large number of devotees and tourists. Lord Shiva is the major deity of the temple, along with Parvati, Ganapati, Sankaranarayana and Sri Rama (Vishnu). it also has four identical gopurams on four directions respectively. There is a koothambalam inside, which is used for staging Koothu, Nangyar Koothu, Koodiyattam etc. The Thrissur pooram is another captivating feature of the temple, which happens in the Thekkinkadu maidhanam every year. It is considered as poorangalude pooram. The main attractions of Pooram are panchavadhyam, Elanjithara melam, Kudamattam, Vedikettu and so on. Aanakotta, where we can see many elephants is one another major attraction. The beauty of the mural paintings, the majestic craftsmanship, the well maintained surroundings, the lush greenery, all add up to its serene ambience. This temple is a must-visit destination in Thrissur.

Vadakkumnathan temple is located at the bustling heart of the city, and I must say it's a truly unique and exceptional place. Despite the constant hustle and bustle of traffic just outside its gates, stepping into the temple felt like entering a different world altogether. The serene and peaceful atmosphere within the temple was astonishing, providing a stark contrast to the noise and commotion of the city. It was as if the chaos of the outside world ceased to exist the moment I crossed the threshold. The feeling of calmness that enveloped the temple was truly remarkable, making it a perfect refuge for those seeking a peaceful escape from urban life. The temple's ability to create such a tranquil environment in the midst of a busy city is a testament to its significance. It's a place where one can find solace, reflect, and connect with the divine without any external distractions. I highly recommend this unique temple to anyone looking for a spiritual and serene experience right in the center of the city.

Fantastic one. Thrissur district in Kerala is known for its rich culture and heritage. Being the place tha hosts Thrissur Pooram, the festival of festivals, Thrissur also has many other reasons to be proud of. Several unique attractions like Vadakkunnathan Temple, Punnathur Kotta (Palace of elephants) and Kalamandalam make the district one of the culturally strong places in Kerala. The temple is built in typical Kerala style architecture, located on a hillock in the heart of Thrissur city. Standing tall in the centre of 9 acres of land, the temple doesn't fail to grab attention of the passers-by. There are 4 gateways called gopurams to the temple facing East, West, North and South respectively.

The temple situated in the very centre of town on an eminence commanding a view of neighbouring areas all around. No historian or scholar has been able to ascertain the time when this temple came into existence. Our knowledge of the origin of this temple comes from legends. A big complex of three core temples, and many other shrines around it on a large park on top of a scenic hillock. Shiva as Vadakkunnathan is the primary deity and He faces west here. He is in the form of a linga manifested by layers of solid Ghee. Hood of a multiheaded Cobra hovers over Him. When the deity is decorated with gold cladding, the sight is so beautiful and divine. Right behind this sanctum is the shrine of Parvathi, Shiva's consort, facing east. Very beautiful looking deity. Next shrine is for Ganapathi, facing east. Next big shrine is for Shankarnarayana, a dual image of Shiva and Vishnu. The left half of the idol is female depicting Vishnu as Mohini. This beautiful deity faces west. The third big shrine is for Sri Rama, standing majestically with His bow on His left hand. Outside this main temple, around it on the parikrama, there are shrines for Krishna, Ayyappa, Parasurama, Adhi Shakara and many more. The walkway around the temple, by itself is a very pleasant one.

The Vadakkumnathan Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva in Thrissur, in the Thrissur district of Kerala, India. The temple is a classical example of the architectural style of Kerala and has one monumental tower on each of the four sides in addition to a koothambalam. Mural paintings depicting various scenes from the Mahabharata can be seen inside the temple. Once again in this temple too, as a respect you need to wear a mundu (traditional kerela wear) and go bear chest. We happened to visit in the evening so missed the look of it in the day light. Photography inside the temple is strictly prohibited. Managed to take a video out of the temple.

An absolute must visit temple. It’s a very big temple complex with greenery all around. Just a look at the gaint trees will make you aware of the temple’s antiquity. The temple is one of the finest examples of Malabar architecture and awe inspiring murals painted with vegetable colours. We can easily spend a couple of hours looking at the murals depicting various ‘Puranas’. Don’t miss the evening ‘Arti’ (soon after sunset) and morning 4.15 AM darshan where Sri Wadakkunathan abhishekam with ghee is performed. I pray that I visit this temple again and again🙏

Vadakkumnathan Temple is an awe-inspiring testament to Kerala's architectural heritage and spiritual significance. Having visited this temple multiple times, I've been consistently enchanted by its timeless beauty. The meticulous maintenance, lush lawns, and verdant trees enhance the temple's tranquility. If you find yourself near Thrissur, a visit to this temple is a must for a serene and peaceful experience. The temple's architectural marvel showcases Kerala's distinctive style, featuring monumental towers on all four sides and a graceful kuttambalam. Vadakkumnathan Temple is most renowned for the grandeur of the "Thrissur Pooram Festival," an annual celebration held in September. This festival is a mesmerizing blend of caparisoned elephants, colorful parasols, and rhythmic percussion music, uniting spirituality and culture in an unforgettable spectacle. You can conveniently reach the temple on foot from Thrissur Railway Station (1.5 km) or Thrissur KSRTC bus stand (1 km). The Thrissur Pooram Festival is a vibrant and grand tribute to Lord Vadakkunnathan, an event that encapsulates the rich cultural and religious essence of Kerala. It's no wonder that Thrissur Pooram is celebrated as one of India's largest and most famous temple festivals.
