A hidden gem: Best halal Burmese place in the Bay Area 🎊 We went with a party of 8. In order to reserve, we called ahead of time and confirmed a 7:30 pm check in. Waiter said we were welcome to walk in. He also verbally confirmed the food was halal. Satisfied, we drove to the place at the confirmed time. Decor was pretty nice and the restaurant was quiet given there were very few diners. We ordered the following appetizers and mains:- 1- Tea leaf salad 2- Samosa 3- Mango salad 4- Basil chilli lamb 5- Basil chilli beef 6- Sesame chicken 7- Fried rice 8- Coconut rice All the items were absolutely delicious! The salad were oh so crunchy and so fresh! The combination of toasted garlic, peanuts and nuts with the tangy salad was really good! I thought the salad at Burma superstar was good, but this was much better! Fried rice was really good too and so were the other mains. All in all, highly recommend. This will be our go to place up north. P.S: For folks considering halal, note they serve pork too.

Great food great service! Brought us the tea leaf salad just to try while we were waiting for our food. It was amazing! Also recommend the basil lamb.

Really cozy intimate setting. Tea Leaf salad a must. It holds true to the hype. We went right during opening. So, it's not too busy. All the food was delicious and savory.

Ate here for the first time tonight, and it was such a wonderful experience. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was peaceful and relaxing. But what stood out the most was the outstanding, warm and courteous service. I can’t wait to visit again!

Excellent Burmese food in Berkeley! Service was friendly and the establishment was clean. We were in town visiting family and feeling famished. Ordered the mango tofu, fiery tofu and vegetables, and coconut rice. The rice was incredible! Highly recommend. We appreciated that the typical surly, disgruntled jaded Bay Area worker attitude was not present here. Thank you for making out-of-towners feel welcome!

Yellow tofu salad was fresh homemade deliciousness expertly mixed and with sweet conversation. We left happy and full after the main dish, an okra and egg curry. Can’t wait to come back.

We have been coming here for years, and it is one of the most consistently outstanding restaurants in our rotation. My kids love the sesame chicken, and the tea leaf salad is always fresh and perfectly spiced. The owner is warm and friendly, and at this point he had seen my kids grow from babies into young adults. This is exactly the kind of high quality, neighborhood business that is my pleasure to support. Enjoy!

The folks at royal Rangoon are prompt and friendly! The food is some of the best in the Bay Area and the atmosphere of the restaurant lends itself to lots of good conversation! The portions are hearty and the food has incredible, complex flavors. I love coming here for my birthday, and always bring out of town friends to eat here! I especially love the samosa soup!

Pretty good Burmese food. No indoor seating and this is not indicated on Google so it was annoying to have to lug the food to a nearby park. Service is pretty good. Enjoyed the tea and the food quite a lot.

I’ve ordered a variety of items over the past few years, and have liked each one. Personal standouts are the tea leaf salad, pork curry, and eggplant curry. The staff are always so kind.

Nice atmosphere and solid food with many vegetarian optiosn (4/5 green stars also) I’ve been to Royal Rangoon (formerly Rangoon Superstars) three or four times and it has always been a good experience. The interior is large, with a mix of tables and booths, and the staff members are always pleasant. The salads (tea leaf or rainbow) are a good choice if you’ve never had them and their garlic noodles (with tofu) are good too. Beer selection is not that exciting but there are a couple of decent local choices (Trumer, Sierra) and a range of other options from oolong tea to nigori sake. Good place for vegetarians and I just noticed that their veggie dishes cost a good bit less than meat or fish dishes. Most of the veggie main courses are $10-12 (for dinner) and there’s a very wide selection. Look forward to trying more! I’m also giving them 4/5 “green stars” for social and environmental impact based on these reasons: Positives: • A lot of vegetarian options on the menu. • They support the community by offering special rates for community events and school functions. (They also offer student discounts.) • As far as I remember their to-go packaging is fairly sustainable (mostly cardboard). Room for Improvement: • Could replace some of their mainstream imported beer with local options. • I can’t find any info on ingredient sourcing – more transparency there would be good. Really great Burmese food, personally I think its almost the same quality as Burma Superstar (some dishes are tastier!) but much more affordable

Our second time at Royal Rangoon. Feels like you cannot go wrong with the food here. I would have given a five stars but yesterday, the restaurant was busy and that created some room for a little bit of delay in everything. But overall, a pleasant experience.

Small restaurant, good ambience with some Burma maps on the wall. I like places where you can have dinner on the bar . I had the Royal Rangoon noodles and their red chicken curry. The curry was great. Royal Rangoon noodles are served cold which don't taste good when they are cold. Probably I don't get the idea as to why that dish is supposed to be served cold.

This is a great place to eat Burmese food. Usually not crowed but it is better to make a reservation. Thanks be of the owners is really friendly and smiled at our little one. Place is quiet and we’re friendly to our child. Parking was not difficult Friday around 6 pm. Recommended to small and big groups.

Overall it's pretty good, though the dessert was a slight letdown. The tea leaf salad is a favorite, always recommended. Also tried the basil chili lamb and chicken biryani. The lamb was great, the biryani was decent. Coconut rice doesn't have as pronounced of a coconut flavor as other places. For dessert we tried the sticky rice with mango, but the mango was not ripe at all: instead it was hard and slightly sour, definitely not a good complement for the rice. We mentioned this to the server but after checking with the kitchen he said they didn't have any better mangoes. We got some ice cream as well - that was ok. Would pass on both desserts next time unless they had ripe mangoes. Overall it's a decent value in terms of taste/price.
