Definitely recommend to go and spend a night in Tacugama in their eco lodges in a little jungle - it is a special experience. Beautiful surrounding, good food, amazing staff who is taking care of the cimpanzees. We did a tour and a long hike and we had a great time!!

This was a 1.5 hrs tour of the sanctuary. It an excellent place to visit. Good for all ages and cost about $15 in Sierra Leonean curency. You can also spend a night there. Go to the website for more details.

An extraordinary experience! Very knowledgeable tour guides and exciting opportunities to witness the chimpanzees. Be prepared to hike up a steep hill to access the sanctuary, unless you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle.

Truly a magical place - and positively bewildering that it’s so close to the craziness of Freetown. You would think you were thousands of miles away. I’ve been privileged to sit with the mountain gorillas of Uganda as well as see chimps in the wild. This is a completely different experience, with them practically within spitting distance (or a “stone’s throw,” considering the chimps sometimes do that to guests!). From the looks of things, animal welfare is indeed a priority here. It’s NOT a zoo. The animals appear to be well taken after and the guides are knowledgeable, speak fluent English, and are anxious to educate guests about all aspects. Spending the night in one of the eco lodges made for an especially memorable experience - periodically waking up to the sounds of chimps yelling was unique and enchanting. Dinner and breakfast were both delectable, with huge portions. Great value for money and a wonderful organization.

I was overwhelmed at my visit to this place. If you are in Sierra Leone and you want to come close to nature, this is the place. You can learn about the chimpanzees, have a meal and even lodge right inside the forest. There are lodges named after the chimps. It was beautiful watching the alpha male display authority and control, the mother carrying their baby under them, the teenage ones playing and throwing stones at you.

Fantastic overnight stay with a sanctuary tour in the morning. What a way to wake up hearing the calls from chimpanzees and delighted the family. The guides were excellent leading us through the good work they do here. The yoga platform looks like a great space, might ask if we can have dinner there on our next visit. We stayed in the Mamma Lucy lodge which has a lovely balcony looking out into the forest. The only downside is the road up was a bit hairy with the construction work going on, but hopefully this means it will improve!

A phenomenal sanctuary that is doing everything possible to fight for some of SL's last remaining green space and to protect the chimps. Come visit if you can and definitely support them as much as possible. We need to protect our planet.

I liked the place and the atmosphere. The project is nice and deserves support. It is an incredible rainforest escape from Freetown. Accomodation is in the jungle and very basic. As there are better hotels within 30mins drive I suggest staying in Aberdeen. Overall it is definitely worth the visit and do not forget to climb the tower!

I did a scheduled tour and really enjoyed it! Our guide was very knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. The sanctuary is well kept and very cute. The best part is it’s not far from Freetown, which is unusual. It would be fun to stay at one of their ecolodges overnight!

Went to the yoga retreat here and had a lovely few days! The food was genuinely so tasty, the lodges were stunning and it was generally a very relaxing place to stay. The sanctuary walk was beautiful as well, and the chimps appear to be treated very well and are being rehabilitated to allow them the best chance to return to the wild, even after some very traumatising abuse at the hands of people. I definitely recommend a visit.

Unfortunately I was not able to see the chimpanzee because the zoo staff work on schedule and I was very short in time. The staff is very professional and friendly. And the landscape est very beautiful. I recommend.

Stayed here a couple of years ago. A wonderful eco-tourism place to stay with the benefit of helping the chimpanzees. This history of Tacugama and the ongoing work it does is a testament to the owners and the local people.

Doing an excellent job rescuing and rehabilitating chimps that have been kept as pets. Knowledgeable and passionate guides. You definitely need a 4x4 to get up the hill to get here.

A great place doing great work. I really enjoyed visiting the chimpanzees, watching them being fed and learning how the chimps were rescued and are being cared for. I also stayed in one of the Bungalows for two nights, while I was there as part of a vacation, it also crossed my mind that although located in the forest it is only 10 minutes by car to Freetown so also a great place for a Business person to stay if they want peace and tranquility outside the crazy busy town to relax after work. Meals are local food and are delicious, but be warned the portions are huge even larger than American portions.

I have for the past five years been recommending this place to guests, yesterday I had my chance to visit. The sanctuary is fun but what stands out is the tour guard's guidance. He is so calm and confidence with his narration. when I enquired about the great escape of 2016, he hinted me on the story so we'll that I am inspired to write a story on it.

Beautiful experience. It was my first contact with chimpanzees and I was utterly impressed by their resemblace to humans.. The sanctuary seems provides a very good and spacious place for the chimps, which seem to have a lot of fun living there. I also slept in the sanctuary's lodge and I loved it. Woke up with the chimps screaming, which was quite fun! Highly recommend!

Chimpanzees are rehabilitated and cared for here. You would love this place because it is one of the very few places to have fun in Sierra Leone. This is one of the most interesting places to visit in Sierra Leone. Though I visited this place before the flood that happened in Sierra Leone, I am not so sure about the status after the disaster.

A visit to Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary is such a privilege. If you can only do one thing in Freetown, make sure it’s a trip to Tacugama. The guided tour is not to be missed. Incredible place that needs to be preserved.

  • 5/5 francesc g. 1 year ago on Google
Great explanation of how the place works. Shows the way they work. Not easy to access road. Very friendly people working in the premises. They show the three stages they have for the chimpanzees to be in the wild. At the moment not freeing any animal due to the poachers can kill the animals for bush meat if released to the national park. Over all the price for an hour walk in the premises to help the place open is ok. Careful with the stones that throw the chimpanzees, please do not try to contact the animals or feed them it is against the main idea of a sanctuary. Hopefully things will get better with time and some could be freed to the wild. Thanks for the work this people does there are people that can study this animals and preserve them for all of us.

This is my 4th trip there so it must be good. Each time I come to Sierra Leone I spend one night at Tacugama in an eco lodge. It's the perfect escape and very therapeutic. Knowledgeable staff and always friendly. Their hikes and bird watching walks are worth a go.

A great place to visit and the staff are brilliant. The guides have many stories and a sounds knowledge....although watch out for the stone throwing! It's worth staying a night too in their cabins, waking up to the sound of all the animals is amazing. They can also provide dinner and breakfast; both of which were very tasty. If you're staying, they are also self catering, so would recommend stocking up on some food and a bottle of wine before hand.
