Gdynia Sculpture of a Kashubian couple on a bench at Kaszubski Square. The bench depicts a married couple: Jakub Scheibe (1858 - 1939), a returnee from America, engaged in fishing, and Elżbieta née Kurr (1871 - 1956). In 1928, Jakub Scheibe built a tenement house at Kaszubski Square according to the design of architect Wiktor Lorenz. At his wife's request, he added a room on the top floor with a view of the sea up to the Hel Peninsula. While Jacob was fishing, Elizabeth sat in this room, waiting for his return. The tenement house has survived to this day and stands next to a bench on the other side of the street. Jana of Kolno, members of the Scheibe family still live there. The sculpture is in the style of a cheerful, friendly caricature. A roll of paper sticks out of Jakub's pocket with the inscription: "Jakub, if you build a room for me on the top floor, I will see when you come back from the sea - Elżbieta."

A charming sculpture depicting an elderly couple - a woman and a man. A very nice accent on Kaszubski Square in Gdynia.

A nice landmark of Gdynia, near which you want to take a photo. And when you see these soulful old people, you want your old age to look like this. Disadvantage: the bank, which is located nearby, spoils the background of the photos. It is extremely difficult (but possible) to take a photo without the bank logo being included in the frame. On the one hand, I take my hat off to the marketers of this bank, who cleverly achieved free advertising on hundreds or even thousands of photographs. On the other hand, spoiling the view of the city is, in my opinion, a crime. Bonus track: they say that there used to be a sea here, so it’s possible that old people sit and admire the sea. No wonder the sculpture is called “Bench with a View of Happiness.”

Surprising for an outsider, a couple of happy Kashubians on a bench. A nice surprise.
