Watched Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde here. The house is elegantly old-fashioned, and the acoustic excellent, but the seat (in the second floor balcony) is less comfortable and the room for legs is narrow. The orchestra and title roles of the opera were wonderful, but the new staging by a French director was just nightmarish for my taste. I basically closed my eyes, only listening to the magical music and singing for most of the night.

The opera hous in Ghent dates back from 1840. Although the facade is elegant and classical and not at all flamboyant as many other opera houses from the outside. The 3 inner rooms are much more baroque and still breath the 19th century atmosphere: the foyer, concert hall and ball room are very intimate rooms. The opera scenery is also very cosy and has a very good acoustic. I had the opportunity during covid times to be one of only 200 participants to enjoy La Boheme from Puccini...splendid.

We went to see a dance performance that was absolutely amazing. The people who assisted us with the wheelchair access were all very kind and friendly, however there is room for improvement logistically and in terms of communication (one of the staff members didn't know what to do and gave me ambiguos instructions, I am guessing it was her first time). The theater is very old (and gorgeous) but still they sought to find alternatives to guarantee wheelchair accessibility which is definitely very much appreciated. It is worth mentioning that there is a wheelchair accessible toilet although it might be a bit small and might require assistance to close the door for some people.

Part of Opera Ballet of Flanders, this opera house still has its allure (a renovation will be great though). The cloakroom is free and mandatory and the foyer has a bar. There is also a nice restaurant. Gent is definitely worth staying overnight if you come from dance/ballet. Vooruit is another theater in the same area with dance program.

Anyone entering an opera house immediately gets a special feeling. The imposing buildings with their ancient decorations and stately staircases and columns immediately transport you to another era, maybe it’s because of the red carpets and opulent luxurious decorations. Going to a performance in this unique setting gives your opera visit just that little bit more. However, the opera houses are not only venues for performances, they also have a story all to themselves. Although they are old, they have not always existed, and both locations have undergone extensive restoration. Well worth a visit, pop up and have some Prosecco while you’re there!🥂

No charm, high level of discomfort. You won't see much if you sit on the 4th balcony - yet still pay an extravagant amount of money
