Sicilian restaurant that was previously an intimate affair on King St and now a spacious venue with cocktail bar on Lonsdale. Food is great, service even better, and they have a thoughtful wine list including many unusual and rarely served varietals by glass.

I had the best night at SUD Food and Wine thanks to the amazing people who work there. From the moment we arrived, the staff were incredibly friendly and genuine, taking the time to explain the menu and even cracking a few jokes to make us laugh. It was clear that they put a lot of effort into making our experience special, and we really appreciated it. But of course, the food and wine were also amazing. The menu was full of delicious options, and everything we tried taste great. I think what really made the night for us was the whole experience. Sometimes it's not just about the food, but about the people and the atmosphere. And at SUD, we felt so welcomed and well taken care of. We left feeling full, happy, and grateful for such a wonderful evening. Thanks so much to the whole team - we can't wait to come back!

What a lovely restaurant! You'd almost walk past it as it has an unassuming entrance - which is part of its charm. Inside it's a gorgeous welcoming elegant place, with wonderful friendly staff and delicious food. Nothing was too much trouble for the wait staff. It can be hard to find places like this just around the corner from Southern Cross station - it's perfect and we will be back.

Stumbled across SUD when Googling for decent restaurant between William and Spencer St. Unremarkable from the outside but a gorgeous restaurant inside. Service was charming, personable and fun. The food and wine were outstanding. Clearly full of regulars as this isn't a restaurant you would find easily just walking by.. The restaurant is moving locations to Lonsdale St in 6 weeks time. I'll definitely return.

🇮🇹 best italian food 🏠: @sudfoodandwine 📍: Lonsdale St, CBD 📝: Best Italian restaurant we’ve tried so far in 2023. SUD serves traditional Italian dishes, nothing out if this world, but taste wise was super delicious. ❤️: I don’t even know where to start. Well, food was good, like REALLY GOOD, the meatballs were to die for (sauce was 👌). Service was very interesting (in a good way) and fun, they come round to talk and chat, but the best part was the fact that they keep giving you bread and even dip it in all the sauces for you 🤣, top notch!!

It's a nice little fancy Italian restaurant. Service was exceptional - very friendly staff all round, from their sommelier, to their waiters, even the chef individually plated our mains as we decided we would share one of them between the 3 of us (in addition to other entrees). Everything was delicious! The place may feel small, but it's big on character, a very welcoming and happy place to complement the wonderful meals ❤️

Well, what an experience. Probable the best two waiter/waitress I’ve ever dealt with and actually spent time with. Expensive, but yes, you do pay for the best fresh food and the best service ever. Christian, amazing bloke, very friendly and assisted with our 3 1/2 night. It was amazing. Even got to meet the big boss. Will be back next month

We had a lovely dinner there. Food was great, service ideal and the owner a local character who made our evening. Good spot to checkout for tasty traditional Italian food. I would definitely go back next time I visit Melbourne.

My personal absolute favourite place in Melbourne, it's got the swanky looks of a contemporary upper-class New York restaurant but the personality of a warm Italian grandma. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable and this place taught me the wonder of being able to travel through wine. I won't call this place cheap, but I would however call every dollar spent here well and truly worth it. If you come to SUD, make sure you try the carpaccio.

The staff are caring, competent, and professional. The food was good and I wanted to try more. I felt that the flavours were not balanced well enough on some dishes. Oyster dressing was too sour, and beef carpaccio needed a bit of salt. It was very close to 5 stars but not quite yet. The pasta dish was amazing and the prawns were so fresh. The creme bluree was average. I really enjoyed the wines the waiters recommended as well. Prices were very reasonable.

My wife and I had a very enjoyable dinner at SUD on a Friday night. The staff were very welcoming and friendly, a precursor to very friendly and attentive service all night. The menu has plenty of choices and our server assisted us with our selection. Their description of the quail special convinced us to try that. The wine list had plenty of quality Australian options but we decided to try an Italian wine. I could recognise a few varieties but our server was very helpful asking us what we liked about wines and then making a recommendation which on tasting delighted us. The food arrived at regular intervals and everything was excellent, particularly the quail dish. The accompanying sourdough was lovely and we ate too much of it, using it to wipe up the excess sauce on our plates. We finished off by sharing the chocolate pyramid dessert with coffee. Overall an outstanding dining experience.

My colleagues and I have eaten lunch at Sud a number of times and the food has always been excellent. The risotto, the pasta, the more substantial mains; you pretty much can't go wrong. The staff are quite lively and the atmosphere feels very authentic. Try to save room for dessert if you can!

Love the place. The staff there is the best. Friendly and make you relax as soon as you step in the front door. I don’t know much about wine but am impressed by the pages long wine list and the knowledge and passion of the staff. Come again after two weeks…. Feel even better. More drinks and thanks to Vin and the team to recommend dishes and wine pairing. Wonderful experience!!

A real gem of a restaurant in the CBD, traditional but classic Italian cuisine, fabulous bar and leather lounge at entry, house staff and sommelier are top notch, really recommend letting the engaging and friendly fellow select and delight with their great range of wines and the Italian wines in particularly, this wonderful service continues into the delicious cuisine, lots of great choices and then you have the charisma and charm of the proprietor who pops around and chats with everyone one, a must visit at least five times 😊

This was the last night of our 6 week trip to Australia and we wanted to have a nice last meal before we returned to the UK. SUD was amazing and we couldn't have asked for anything better. There was a slight mix-up over the booking time, but the owner went out of his way to sort it out and couldn't have made us feel more welcome. This was the best meal we had in Australia. The scallops were beautifully cooked and sweet, the flounder special and John Dory were superb and the chocolate fondant and raspberry sorbet were the best we have eaten anywhere. Can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. Don't miss this gem.

Lovely find. Food is fantastic. Service is awesome. Warm and friendly restaurant staff that immediately disarm you with their smiles. Don’t bother to find faults, just enjoy the whole experience. 😂 Will definitely return to try other items on the menu.

Happy travellers ate there early February. From the second we stepped in the door, we were impressed. The staff were so welcoming and delightfully chatty. They clearly love working in hospitality. The restaurant takes its name from a region in Southern Italy and the food is authentically Italian as was the décor. For entrée, we shared the Salsicce (Pork and Fennel seed) and for main course, we enjoyed the spicy Duck Meatballs and Risotto del Giorno (Crabmeat and Charred Corn) with sides of Broccolini and Baked Potato. Thanks so much to the Staff. Beautiful food and a wonderful dining experience that we will enjoy again when we are next in Melbourne. Very sorry to readers - No Photos to post.

This is such a great place in the CBD. It’s almost hidden away. The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming as you arrive. The staff were extremely friendly, and it was great to hear jokes throughout the night as it didn’t feel like being served by a robot. The food was cooked tremendously and the wait wasn’t long at all. I highly recommend Sud and will definitely be returning!!! Dessert and a Long Island iced tea (made upon request). Plant not included haha.

Had a corporate function there on Friday night, the only thing better than the food was the service. Best meal I have had at a restaurant in many years. The staff just made the whole experience that much better, what a great night.

  • 2/5 Katarina D. 2 years ago on Google
Do not understand all the positive reviews for this restaurant. The pasta was overpriced and underwhelming (the pumpkin ravioli comprised a few pieces of ravioli floating in half a plate of oil). The service was also unprofessional and overbearing and the ambience was lacking (there was no music and it was very dark inside). Would not recommend.

This place was fantastic on King Street and it’s amazing on Lonsdale. Slightly more tables but Vincenzo still rules the roost and his team are superb. The kitchen is beyond, often simple ingredients are turned into something special. On this trip, I had the flounder. This was the best I have ever eaten. Well done Chef!

Impeccable food, impeccable service. I don’t often leave tips, but tonight I did. (That’s high praise indeed.) I honestly want to bring my mum on a trip to Melb for her birthday just so I can take her to this restaurant.

Best dining experience, full on a Thursday night, the food is next level, oysters, croquettes, calamari salad, pasta, the chef needs a pay rise, and the service, Christian, Issy and Vince took care of me so well. 10/10 would highly recommend.

  • 5/5 Glenn W. 1 year ago on Google
Blink and you'll miss it. Only a small frontage, a little like Aladdin's cave. Not a large menu but some wonderful choices. For once I decided to go outside my normal boring selections and chose the quail. You won't be disappointed. My wife selected the steak, and it was tender with great flavour. The wine list was extensive, specially the Italian selection. What was going to be an hour lunch turned into 2 hours.

The best Calabria/Italian Calabrese Trattoria fine dinning I’ve ever had. Vincenzo was a great person and great chef. Food quality was unmatchable accompanied by finest Italian wine. Highly recommended! Unfortunately no photos…

Dinner reservations were made for 2 celebrating an anniversary. Food Service was fantastic.. Restaurant setting is beautiful and intimate however accepting a group of construction workers in casual wear kinda ruined it for us. Had we known probably would have made alternative arrangements. Hence why we didn't stay for desert.

My wife and I flew from Sydney to celebrate our wedding anniversary at SUD's opening night at their new location at 555 Lonsdale. We felt so loved and cared for - just like visiting family. Lots of laughs all round. Darren the chef created a superb tender camel entree that will amaze you. Also a wine selection that will overwhelm. My favourite restaurant in Melbourne.

A small Italian restaurant which was packed on a sunday night so we just managed to grab the last table as we hadn’t booked. The service was warm and friendly, our waiter very knowledgeable about the wine (although only a few were available by the glass) and the food was absolutely delicious - probably the best pasta I’ve ever eaten. A couple of small negatives, on a wet windy evening it was a little cold inside and the owners bonhomie was rather loud at points in the evening as he regaled a large table with a number of enthusiastic anecdotes!

  • 5/5 Tanya H. 3 years ago on Google
We had not heard of SUD before and just randomly wandered in off the street. So glad we did! The atmosphere in the restaurant was warm and welcoming, the food was magnificent, the 3 wait-staff were all attentive, quirky and fun, and we were made to feel like old friends. A truly wonderful dining experience, and we can't wait to go back next time we're in Melbourne.

I went here for lunch with my friend on the day we were flying back home. We were woefully underdressed in hiking/travel attire and almost didn't go in because it looked too fancy. The reviews here persuaded us and we're so happy they did. This might just have been *the* best dining experience we've ever had.

  • 4/5 Kim F. 8 years ago on Google
The whole experience here was warm, friendly and personal. The intimate setting of this restaurant sets you up to be looked after extremely well by the staff. Food was exceptional leaving you with no room to spare when you leave. Only off putting part of the whole night was when I requested a glass of desert wine, a whole bottle was opened and then poured for the rest of the group who didn't want it. Which we were then subsequently charged for.

Found myself in the city alone and hungry. Google pointed me in the direction of SUD and I was not let down. Food was fantastic, as was the service. Highly recommended if you're in this post of town.

  • 5/5 Athena S. 4 years ago on Google
Sud proves that a city cannot have too many excellent Italian restaurants. Perhaps this explains its rather isolated urban location - King Street - although Foglio et Fico is more remote on Spencer Street. Food and service are top notch - it's a pretty small space, but there are plenty of staff to suit your needs, and you may get several visits by owner Vincenzo to make sure everything goes well. My impression is that the Italian style is more inclined to a simple and rich ending, not the high-tech nature of some places, and it is awesome to have this choice.

This is a place I found occasionally when I passed by in a raining day, but I had a feeling it would be good. Then I marked it on my map. The food is good, ambience is nice The service was not that perfect for me: During my whole time eating, we did not get ant small plates for sharing even we were sharing everything. And the manager did not ask how would I I want the food be served after I ordered. Honestly his passion and professional for the food and drinks here made me impressive but the cons I mentioned was really outrageous howler in the service here. But I am still want to come back again to try sth else next time~
