I enjoyed an enchanting evening at this French restaurant, surrounded by a romantic ambiance. The setting was perfect for a special night out. The culinary experience was exceptional, showcasing the very best of French cuisine. The duck and escargot were standout dishes, cooked impeccably. The house Shiraz they offered was truly remarkable, one of the most delightful flavors I've encountered. I highly recommend this place for anyone seeking an exquisite dining experience.

Philippe 🇫🇷 - Artisanal sourdough bread from Laurent bakery & French butter (Complimentary) - Burgundy snails cocotte en persillade, garlic & parsley butter 6/$20 - Traditional Wagyu beef tartare 100g , pickled radish, salsa verde  $32 - French fries, Parmesan, garlic & rosemary $12 - Mayura station wagyu rump cap 300g $68 - Dry aged “Mila’s farm” duck breast rôtisserie, braised duck leg, mushrooms, onion petals, roasted apricots, jus  $52 Philippe is definitely the perfect French restaurant for your romantic date night! The ambience and atmosphere were absolutely lovely. They serve humble yet refined and gourmet French food. Everything we had was perfectly executed. We started with the sourdough bread and French butter! That was one of the best butter I have had! So creamy, buttery and fragrant. For entrees, we had the escargots and tartare. Can’t fault any of these. The flavours were perfectly balanced, just delicious! We ordered duck and waygu rump for mains. I will not stop raving about the duck because that was sublime!!! The duck was tender with a crispy skin. I could taste the duck fat melting in my mouth in each bite. The bright and tart jus complimented so well with the slight sweetness of the duck. The waygu was alright but the duck outshined it. Last but not least remember to order their chips. Can’t wait to visit Philippe again.

Had a really special night here, of course my birthday night 😜. The restaurant itself is welcoming and the decor is perfect. Service was personal without being intrusive, and excellent as well. I love that Melbourne has so many gems you can find. This is one of them. For me The food was delicious. Would recommend for that special night out.

Keep an eye out for the reopening of this gem. Currently undergoing some renovations back looking to come back with a bash, get your reservation confirmed asap. Fine dining classic French cuisine, absolutely loved loved this venue. Subtle flavours complementing the hero of every dish. The service is amazing, and I must say the staff are so very charming 😊😊. Very impressive wine list and the team are there to ensure you have an experience not just a meal. Such a cossy yet sophisticated environment. Located in basement level. Fabulous go to for that lock of to a romantic evening, don’t forget the oysters 😉😉. Enjoy and Enduldge.

The French female waitress that served us today (23 Nov 2021) in the dining room away from the kitchen was very attentive, professional, friendly and warm. I wish more service staff were like her! 👍👍👍 I'm glad the charcuterie board and bread basket is still as good 2-3 years ago. Chocolate fondant was amazing but duck has declined. Escargots were 🌟🌟🌟 Really appreciate the kitchen splitting our shared main into two separate plates with proper presentation without us asking. As the male waiter said "it's better and more professional". There was a hiccup/misunderstanding come bill payment time but the manager was kind and understanding. To be honest I thought he was going to put up a fight but it was the opposite. So thank you for that. 🙂🙂🙂 The staff kept their masks on correctly the whole night in line with covid regulations and did ask for our vaccination certificates. 👍👍👍 I don't agree with HaiYing Chen's one star review below about Asian discrimination. 80% Of the patrons the night we dined were Asian and the kitchen staff were Asian.

Perfect date night dinner in the city for French cuisine. Everything was top notch. If you head early there happy hour oyster for $2 which was an absolute bargain for the quality and freshness.

Great service, relaxed atmosphere, French food cooked with passion and attention to detail. The duck is the go to dish here and it did not disappoint - wonderful sauces and rich desserts. What more could you want?

Celebrating a 22.02.2022 birthday couldn't have been better at Philippe. Spencer served us with his best attention and so did the rest of the crew. The food was awesome..can't go wrong with the snails, brochollini, pate, and not forgetting the duck! The must try place for French dining! Thank you for the Happy Birthday chocolate!

We had an incredible experience at Philippe. The service was fantastic and the food was even better. Portions were very large and the flavours were very authentic - so delicious! We never order dessert at restaurants but the creme brulee was too good to pass it. Would definitely recommend for a date night!

Pleasant decor in semi-basement. You can have a drink at the bar with $4 oysters before being seated. Waitering staff are helpful and courteous, and there is even a genuine French waitress. Open kitchen adds to the atmosphere and food delicious.. Dry aged duck is their specialty, and the escargots memorable

How good can a French restaurant get in Melbourne? Well you won't find much better than Philippe on little collins. All the dishes here highlight the natural flavours of the ingredients and execute the cooking to the absolute pinnacle to achieve maximum flavour. I was most surprised about how good the eggs were in the asparagus! They were indeed worthy to be called "perfectly poached eggs" as written in the menu. And the duck! Omg the duck. It is unbelievable so if you come you have to get it, trust me. If you are looking for some quality food at a truely friendly fine dining restaurant, please do check out Monsieur Philippe Mouchel's restaurant!

I loved our dining experience here. From the moment you walk down the stairs, you are greeted by a friendly staff who would guide you to the table. We were provided with very informative and kind suggestions on what to order. The atmosphere was really nice too, had a light touch and provided a sophisticated ambiance but still allowing for a casual dining experience. Tables were spread out just enough so we didn’t have to talk over other people’s conversations. The open kitchen concept was also a delight to view. Food service was extremely quick and we never had to wait long after ordering and between dishes despite the restaurant being almost at capacity. We saw the chef also greeting guests and providing that personal touch to the experience. Taste of the food was amazing - we ordered the prawns which were juicy and cooked to perfection, wrapped in deep fried crepe(?), some fresh oysters which were fresh and juicy too, half dozen escargot in Persillade butter which were delicious, perfectly balanced and went really well with the bread that came with it… and for our mains, we had the dry aged duck and the wagyu rump steak with Bernaise sauce, both were cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious, personally I enjoyed the duck more as it was packed full of flavour and so juicy to bite into together with the crispy skin on top… finally for our dessert, we chose the crème brûlée and white choc pistachio desserts, both were satisfying, not too sweet and a perfect end to the wonderful meal. Personally I did enjoy the pistachio dessert more simply because it was more complex in the mix of flavours and textures. Would highly recommend and look forward to another opportunity to come back here.

One of the most personal and delightful dining experiences in Melbourne. Pricey but the staff know their stuff and make every meal an absolute treat. Traditional French menu with favourites. We had the pressed duck and it did not disappoint!

Absolutely delicious food! The Chef even split our onion soup so we could better share it. Had a variety of dishes and they were all amazing. You can clearly taste the quality of the ingredients and the “heart” that went into making and coming up with the dish. Special mention to the mash potatoes, it was light, fluffy, creamy and flavourful. Quite costly but definitely worth every penny.

This fine establishment may be one of the most underrated restaurants in town. Everything was exceptional; the service, food, atmosphere. The duck is a must order dish. The value for money you're getting at Philippe is exceptional. I liked this place so much on the first visit I've already pre-booked 2 other dinners in Dec, including my birthday dinner. Looking forward to coming back and try other dishes as well!

My partner and I recently had the fixed price lunch here. This is a classy restaurant, located in a laneway off Collins Street. You are greeted with a warm 'Bonjour' as you arrive. As soon as you sit down, you feel as if you were in a Paris restaurant and I was impressed by the warm and professional staff. Although we were having the fixed price lunch, we were treated with the same professionalism and attentiveness as others. Warm, fresh French bread arrived at no charge. For entree, we both had the summer tomato gazpacho with mozzarella and basil. A fresh, light flavoursome entree; perfect on a warm day. I had the seared silver dory fillet with heirloom tomatoes and vierge sauce. Great colours and beautifully presented. A sensible portion with great flavours. My partner had the charcoal grilled aged porterhouse with potato crisps and bercy sauce. Great presentation and a succulent meal. For an extra $10, we shared a mesclun salad with snow peas and parmesan. The accompanying wine from M. Chapoutier (Heathcote) was very good and generous in a 250ml carafe each. We decided to turn the quick lunch into a long lunch and had dessert ( the three course fixed price menu is $55). I had the vanilla creme brulee. It had the crispy, semi-burnt top and a beautifully light, vanilla creme custard texture. My partner had the Chocolate Mousse "Langue de chat". It was a lovely rich chocolate, accompanied by a Langue de Chat ( a cat tongue light long biscuit) which complemented the mousse perfectly. We both enjoyed an interesting, nicely balanced three course meal, with good wine at a leisurely pace in a five star French restaurant. We shall go again and would highly recommend.

Every food was made to perfection! Every bite was supreme contentment and utter joy. We were running late and only had 15 minutes before the kitchen closes, however, the entire Philippe Family was accommodating. The staff who looked after us was professional, amicable, and attentive to our needs and small mishap. When we visit Melbourne again, Philippe is our first stop and choice! Again, thank you so much for accommodating us, and our experience in your restaurant made our Melbourne trip all worth our while. #HatsOff

I had a fabulous time. The decore reminds me when I was in France. The restaurant doesn’t have many tables- not over crowded. As soon as the food arrived the aroma hit me. Food was delicious. The taste amazing!! Enjoyed the chef cooking dishes at some tables. Excellent service! Truly French food.

Food was top quality, the chef really brought out the natural flavours of the ingredients without being overpowered by sauces or flavouring. The highlight was the duck and the staff were so attentive and lovely, would definitely go back!

Food was phenomenal, from the presentation to the taste. We come out from the restaurant feeling happy and satisfied. Service was great coz we walk in without booking but we happy to get the bar table and the service was still great. Most important we still get the bread is complimentary because is rarely found this days. Most places need to pay for that.

I adore this restaurant. The food is incredible. All of the staff are thoughtful, attentive and lovely. And of course, Phillipe himself is a charming and talented chef. The whole experience made our anniversary such a special and personal night! And the pressed duck was incredible!

The most authentic fine dining experience we could have imagined. Phillipe was warm, entertaining and fantastic and served us with his famous duck press dish. Excellent and friendly staff, attentive and consistently checking how each course was, explaining the history of dishes. This is the number 1 restaurant in Melbourne.

Fantastic service and delicious food, Couldn’t fault a thing! Sat at the oyster bar and the $3 oysters were amazing. One of the best restaurants in Melbourne, the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the food. You must order the chicken liver parfait, dry-aged duck breast, and the crème brûlée! What made the experience even more special was witnessing the passion of the owner and chef, Philippe. You could tell how much he enjoys his work as he checked every dish before it was served. The staff was also attentive and friendly. We left with very happy tummies and will be coming back for more.

Philippe is a stunning restaurant with divine food. We shared an hors d’ouvres platter which would have been a delightful meal on its own and followed it up with absolutely incredible main meals of chicken breast and duck with apricots. This was a perfect date night restaurant, with friendly, attentive staff and a wonderful atmosphere. We will definitely be back!

'Philippe’ by Paul Bocuse trained Chef, Philippe Mouchel, is a great place to celebrate a special occasion (or any other for that matter) with special friends, as was this visit. The food, as you would expect, is up there as some of the best French offerings you will find in Melbourne. We thoroughly enjoyed our entire dining experience.

Lovely service and great atmosphere. Lovely onion soup, pate de croute didn't quite hit the mark for me. Chicken was perfectly cooked, I would have liked more sides/flavour to go with it though I loved the secret smoked morsels. Lamb dish was delicious and surprising, very good. Chocolate fondant with pear sorbet was a perfect balance. We look forward to returning to try the duck! 4.5 stars!

Charming and cosy restaurant with superb tender chicken! All aspects of the meal were marvellous; from the bread with Normandy butter, to the cured salmon with beetroot starter. The waitstaff were friendly, attentive and polite - the only drawback was that it was very crowded and we had to wait a while for each course. Highly recommended!

Maybe it’s just my general excitement at being able to dine in again but having eaten here several times I feel like this place has actually improved since reopening after lockdown. Everything was great, the cassoulet was extremely rich and hearty. Our waiter (an Australian with glasses who’s name I sadly can’t remember) was especially lovely and accommodating.

When PM24 closed, I was dreaming about when I'd next see a Philippe Mouchel meal. Tucked in a laneway and downstairs into the venue, the charming atmosphere and meat on display took me straight back to France. I was able to make a reservation quite late in the day, and I was promptly seated at the start of service. I had the Chef's oyster selection (Pacific, Sydney Rock, Angasi, Sea Water Jelly), escargots (with garlic and parsley butter, tomato fondue, croutons), Mayura Station chocolate fed Wagyu rump cap with Bercy, parmesan and rosemary french fries, and a milk soaked honey madeleine. Service was amazing, and I was fortunate to be seated near the pass to watch Philippe Mouchel himself throughout the evening. Highly recommended, will definitely return.

After catching a film at Kino, we walked down Collins st, looking for a place to drink and take shelter. It had started to rain, and we ducked down a random alleyway. There I spotted a small entrance, with those two magic words written on a sign: WINE BAR. But this was no wine bar. We went down the stairs and was transported into a whole french bistro world. The waiter, as if he was just expecting us, greeted us happily, telling us this was the perfect place to take refuge from the rain. "Let me take your coats", he said, proceeding to hang my friend's old tattered hoodie alongside the fur and cashmere. He gave us a seat at the bar. On the speaker played champs elysees. Were we in a Wes Anderson film? I had a sauvignon blanc (a bit too light) and a chenin blanc (perfect) and my friend had a glass of bordeaux which was really good. They were decent prices for such good wines. We inspected the food menu, which was resplendent with bourgeois items like foie gras and marrow and rumps. Behind us, behind bars of hung meats and cured things, was a young chef who was great to watch, dashing from one side to another, putting things on fire, tousling a pan, finely chopping some greens. What a great find. I'll come back here when i'm rich. When we went back outside, the rain had stopped, and the air was clear.

(Translated by Google) In the downstairs of the alley, it is easy to find. It feels very comfortable from the entrance to the seat. The grandfather leads the seat and helps you adjust the position of the table. It is a fat French waitress who helps to order food, but the service is very general. Yes, it feels very comfortable. Ordered oysters, very recommended, very special! Very fresh! Must be. Foie gras bread is also a must-have point, the bread is very crisp, foie gras is not awkward, slightly sweet. This set of dishes is a bit greasy, and I personally feel that other homes are better than this one. I have seen other people's recommendations before the cow tartart, but after the point, I may not be accustomed to such a taste. I think the sauce is mixed with this beef, which is very common. The main food of duck breast is really big! More than you think, but recommended, delicious!

Environment and meals were lovely. Special mention for the butter - delicious. My chicken was moist and the sauce flavorful. The sashimi entree lovely. Service is polite and friendly without being too intrusive. Had my birthday dinner there. Waiter brought out what looked like sponge cake offcuts with a candle on it which was a strange touch. Probably better not to have it at all. Overall a nice classy French underground restaurant.

Generally good experience and great food. The duck is the signature dish and do well. Disappointed with the wagu dish, cost $68. It is sinewy. Not worth it. Dessert is nice. Waiter only focus on their own tables that they are in charge. I think the management needs to rethink how the waiters should split the tips. Lack synergy among the waiters. I read the previous review and complaints from the customers and proof my point.

Located in Melbourne CBD, Philippe offered French cuisine in a classic elegant setting. For dinner we ordered their burgundy snails, sauté mushroom vol au vent, classic herbed rotisserie chicken, chargrilled broccolini. Loved the flavourful snails and flaky vol au vent, although I found the chicken pretty average. Desserts were cherry clafoutis and crème brûlée. The clafoutis was pretty tasty although on the heavier side, and was nicely paired with ice cream. the creamy crème brûlée, another favourite of mine, was nicely served with crispy gavotte. Staff was professional, and overall a great dining experience.

Dined in with 5 friends last week. We were hoping to enjoy the offer of $2 oysters but didn’t read properly and booked a table where the oysters were $5 - if you want to enjoy those delicious oysters, ensure you sit at the bar! Although the service was quite outstanding, our food experience wasn’t the best and it ended up with a few of us not feeling amazing the night of and the next day. I hope this was an isolated case. The staff did communicate with us that we were the only table with that feedback. Unfortunately it was our experience.

SO AMAZING! Never had French cuisine this good!! The pressed duck is a MUST, followed by the escargots, crème brûlée and chocolate fondant for dessert. I would give 6 stars if possible because it’s really the best I’ve had. Philippe has outdone himself here 👏🏻 Tip: the pressed duck requires 24 hours of notice so remember to RSVP in advance!

Very good. Standout dishes were the duck and finishing with the sorbet. 🇫🇷🙌 Would have been 5 stars if it wasn’t for the table of two drinking heavily and getting very loud right next to us, mood killer.

A hidden gem. You immediately get the sense that this will be a great experience when you set eyes on the "duck cabinet" at the bottom of the entrance stairs. A decent sized dining area is split into 2 so the feel is that of a much smaller venue. The food was really good with the pate being a personal highlight for me. We were 3 persons and had 3 courses and not a bad dish among them. I'll be back.

Had a great experience here with a 6 course meal, although we did wait quite a bit for the mains to arrive. All that we ordered was great. If we're to pick top 3 items, it'd be the Duck Breast, Beef Tartare and Snails

Very good service. Food is very delicious. Though I ordered simple dishes, every single bite is delicately tasty. Home made vanilla ice cream is scrumptious.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Philippe and I was absolutely blown away by the food. The restaurant is helmed by Chef Philippe Mouchel, who has over 30 years of experience in the French culinary world. He has a clear passion for his craft, and it shows in every dish. Highlights of the meal include the oysters in sea water jelly which were fresh and creamy. The escargot, which was perfectly cooked and served with a rich and flavorful parsley and red sauce. Our main courses were the dry aged duck and scotch fillet, both of which were melt-in-your-mouth tender and served with a delicious jus. We finished our meal with the Vanilla crème brûlée, which was absolutely god tier. Literally one of the best desserts ever, it was just so rich and delicious. The service at Philippe was also top-notch. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable, and made sure that we had a wonderful dining experience. Overall, I had an incredible dining experience at Philippe. The food was superb, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was elegant. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a special dining experience.

Had a great time, food was a little bit average honestly. Beef tartare didn't come with any yolk on top, but still tasted great!

Loved Philippe! It was my first time here and we celebrated my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary! The food was delectable, the service was friendly and impeccable and we all really enjoyed ourselves. We will be back!

This is the best! The hosting staff were so welcoming, polite, helpful, courteous and their attitudes permeates the entire atmosphere with a 10/10 rating! We took a longer time to finish lunch and they were clearing up lunch hour and preparing for dinner bookings and left us to continue on chatting… they informed us that they will din the light and closed the section but not chasing us out… they even offered if we needed a candle on the table! Philippe… you are the best!!

Such a cosy vibe at Philippe and we had an amazing dinner here. Enjoyed their Dry Aged Duck and Barramundi dishes. Cooked to perfection and matched well with wines. Creme Brulee was a classic finish and nothing we can fault.

Nestled in the heart of Melbourne at 115 Collins St, Philippe stands as a testament to authentic French cuisine. With its entrance discreetly located in the laneway of George Parade, the first impression is intriguing. As guests descend the narrow stairway, greeted by the sight of ducks being aged, they're subtly hinted at the culinary journey awaiting them. The restaurant's ambience captures the essence of a warm, cosy evening in France. The bench seating adds an intimate touch for quiet conversations and jovial gatherings. Dining here, one feels the embrace of a comforting atmosphere, only accentuated by the meticulously designed interiors. Service at Philippe is impeccable. From the moment guests are seated, there's a sense of attentive care without ever feeling overwhelmed. This attention to detail extends to the presentation of each dish – beautifully plated and a true reflection of the restaurant’s commitment to fine dining. The food, undoubtedly, is the hero. Each dish boasts of freshness, and there's a delightful play of textures in every bite. The rotating seasonal specials further ensure that the menu remains dynamic, offering something new for regulars and a broad palette for first-timers. Cleanliness, often a silent aspect of dining, stands out at Philippe. Spotless tabletops and a pristine environment echo the restaurant's high standards in every part of its operation. Speaking of value, the lunch deals are worth noting. At $60 for a choice of two dishes or $70 for three, complemented with a glass of house wine, it offers an exquisite experience without being hefty on the pocket. An extensive wine list is to accompany the gastronomic delights, catering to the discerning connoisseur and the casual diner looking for the perfect pairing. In conclusion, Philippe isn’t just another spot in Melbourne's bustling culinary scene. It’s an experience that encapsulates the soul of French dining. Highly recommended for lunch and special occasions, this place promises a meal and memories.

A perfect dating and vintage vibe for couples and girls talk. My fav food is the dry aged duck breast. It’s so tender and delicious. Also, they have a great variety of wines, and the warmest service.

Good experience overall. Favourites - The chicken rotisserie, was great and so tender but wish the seasoning was a bit stronger. The tartare was really nice as well as the Dégustation Hors d’oeuvres.

We came here for a three course meal for lunch. Delicious roast chicken and creme brulee, and such a lovely atmosphere. My only critique is the roast potatoes could be a little bit more crispy.

Came here for the first time to celebrate my birthday. The moment we walked in we were welcomed by the classy ambience. Loved the marbled lights behind the bar, the vertical gardens and rotisserie window! Beautiful decor, perfect for a romantic night out. For entree: hors d’oeuvres to share, beef tartare and of course the escargots. We thoroughly enjoyed everything especially the beef tartare - the crisps on top added a nice texture to the dish! Personally the escargots would’ve tasted better with more garlic, just my opinion because I love garlic! Overall the entrees were great already! The waitress overheard that I was gluten intolerant and offered gf bread. Wonderful service where I found everyone to be so calm and accommodating! For mains: gnocchi and dry aged duck breast. The gnocchi was topped with a mushroom foam, beautiful plating. The dry aged duck breast was the highlight of the whole night - duck breast cooked to perfection with rendered crispy skin, the pomme purée was out of this world, smooth silky, light and had the perfect balance of butter and cream. The jus was just as fantastic. We were so full by the end of the night. Didn’t get to have dessert unfortunately! This is the epitome of French dining in Melbourne. So amazed by the service, the food and the ambience. I highly recommend Philippe to all wanting the French dining experience. Love love love ❤️

Food was tasty but less than we expected from such a highly rated restaurant. The wine recommended by the sommiler was exceptional. We had a whole truffle chicken, served with truffle mash, and steamed vegetables, truffle flavour was minimal in the chicken, and the best part of the meal was the mash, which was buttery silky and smooth (although again lacked the truffle flavour). The dessert was lovely.

Merci beaucoup Philippe! I always wished to bring my mum to Philippe restaurant knowing what she enjoys, and tonight was the night that wish came true. We had a wonderful evening and enjoyed every little detail of your restaurant. Dishes were 👌 the best of the best. Thank you Philippe for bringing so much delight, and your cooking is too good it makes me blush😆

Had a lovely meal at Philippe! Many things reminded of my pop's old (continental French) restaurant in the US. Great space with lots of character, walking down the stairs to see the meat & chicken case. Then the white tablecloths & butcher paper (stamped in blue). We started with the wagyu beef tartare, Jerusalem artichoke crisps and cured egg yolk. Yum! Had the oysters with sea jelly which were also lovely. And then we had their pâté en croûte (duck and pork, black mushroom, pistachio nut with pickled crudités) that was recommended. Absolutely loved it. We're all escargot heads so the Burgundy snails cocotte en persillade (with garlic and parsley butter) was probably our favourite. For mains, we had their Thousand Guineas Entrecôte “scotch fillet” and their famous rotisserie chicken with duck fat roasted potatoes. I had to have Béarnaise with the steak as it brings me back. Staff were lovely. Great meal. Great experience.

A hidden gem in Melbourne's alleyways, delivers an exquisite French experience! The confit duck is unparalleled, rivalling even those in Paris. It was also my first try with escargot, and the taste was mind-blowingly good! The buttery and garlic flavours were addictive. The service is impeccable. It is a must-try for French cuisine enthusiasts seeking an authentic dining adventure.

We had the hors d’oeuvres variés and planche de charcuterie to start, the chicken liver parfait and pork riellette were quite nice. I felt some of the charcuterie slices could have been sliced thinner to make it easier to eat. For the main we had the dry aged duck breast rotisserie which came with turnips. The duck was very tender and the skin was crisp. The flavour was okay, though I felt it was quite gamey. Service was a bit slow and I personally didn’t like the atmosphere of the restaurant as it was below ground and quite dark. Come here for dinner as you’ll miss the sunshine if you come here during the day.
