This was just not the Spanish cuisine I was expecting the hype to be about. In fact, there were so many Spanish dishes that I was looking forward to that were missing from the menu. Unfortunately there was not one menu item that appealed to me, and I simply stayed because I know how busy it gets, and the manager/gentleman at the front was very friendly and helpful. So I felt bad leaving after sitting. But to me, this was a wasted and expensive experience I would have rather spent elsewhere. The portions are small, the prices are on the expensive side, and the food was not to my tasting at all. I do appreciate the accomodating of the walk in at such a busy time however. 🙏🏼

The tapas dishes were explosions of flavours in my mouth. Absolutely yummy dishes. We had a great time catching up there as a group. The Staff told us which each dish was and we're sweet and attentive topping up our bread up to dip in the sauces in each tapas dish 😋🥰

Hands down the best restaurant experience I had in Melbourne! From arrival to finish the service was absolutely amazing every serve was explained to details, the atmosphere was calm and pleasant the staff was welcoming and knowledgeable included wine pairing! Special thanks to Toni who waited on us on the day I asked him so many questions and he was more than incredible, he made sure that we be served with a pescetarian menu and when I ordered wine I did not look at the menu I explained what I like and left it with him, I have made the right choice by doing so! THE FOOD! the food the food the food! I am known for keeping the salt and pepper close! I can reassure you that I didn't even think about it on the day. The food was well presented, FRESH and absolutely DELICIOUS I smiled the entire time! That crisp with anchovy and tomato was seriously one of the best things I tested in my life <3 I'm half spanish and this truly reminded me of home I would come back every day if I could. To sum this up if you are after a really spoiling restaurant experience MoVIda is the place for you. We will be back for sure! P.s this is the longest review I have ever written well done!

There is definitely a good reason why Movida is the iconic top contender for Spanish cuisine in Melbourne, every element from food to service is faultless. We decided to make a visit to the Original restaurant located in the famous Hosier Lane, one of their many restaurants they’ve opened since 2003. The menu is a seasonal mix of tapas, sharing plates and ever-changing specials, with an aim to bring an experience of culture and fun. We ordered a few things from each section of the menu, and made sure we left room for dessert. The drinks menu mainly consisted of wine and beer. Each dish had us salivating and wondering why the hell we hadn’t visited sooner, with the Octopus and Empanadillas being the standouts from the night. What also impressed us was how laid back yet efficient the staff were, sometimes when restaurants get too popular they end up dropping levels of service - this is not the case here. We felt extremely welcomed and can’t wait to try more of their restaurants. ⭐️ 5/5

Impeccable customer service, the food was delicious and I was just excited to try new food I haven’t ever tried. Every single dish we tried was better than the last. MoVida is all about the experience and we easily spent 4 hours just talking, laughing and most importantly… eating. That is what the MoVida experience is. I highly recommend you give that experience a go. You won’t be disappointed. Shout out to the team for being super friendly and welcoming.

Had their set menu for dinner; menu seemed to have changed a lot over the years and even though their food remained creative; they were all on the really salty side and there was less tapas-style dishes. Same amazing cozy atmosphere and good service.

We chose to have the degustation menu for lunch, plus some oysters to start. It was so tasty and well thought out. The beef cheeks were particularly moorish. Enjoyed every bite. Great wine list. Lovely attentive staff. Thank you for a great experience!

What a hidden gem! Movida certainly knows how to serve up great tapas! The tapas lunch menu was extensive and provided a great selection of Spanish food. The atmosphere, service and staff friendliness will certainly mean i go back again.

A gem located along the Hosier Lane what famous on the wall painting art. You won’t miss if you there to visit this art work. The food is Spanish base and lots of unique tapas. Enjoyed the anchovies with tomato sorbet. The mussel with citrus pickles with seaweed biscuits! The abalones with butter lemon sauce kind of so so! The highlight is the beef cheek with cauliflower purée and the slow cooked duck leg with saffron rice! Such a comfort food and the duck meat just melt in your mouth. What a lovely lunch and highly recommended!

You're in great hands. Friendly staff. People having fun in the kitchen. Not stuffy. Class on a plate. Good atmosphere and I found the high stools we sat on very comfortable. We had the set menu which I highly recommend and it was no problem to swap out items if you share different tastes. Well done and compliments to the chef. 5 out of 5.

Movida 🇪🇸 - Fideua $55.00 Baked Catalan Noodles, Calamari, King Prawns,Spring Bay Mussels, Pippies & Ali Oli 🦑🦐🦞 - Carrillera de Buy $36.00 Pedro Ximenez Braised Beef Cheek, Cauliflower Puree🥩 - Abulón $16.00 each South Australian Abalone cooked over Charcoal, Nashi Pear, Finger Lime & Butter Sauce ⭐️ - Pez Real $8.00 each cold smoked kingfish, Pine Nut Sorbet & Pine Nut Gazpacho 🐟 - Croqueta $6.00 each Zucchini & Queso Mahon 🥒Croquette - Pincho Pork Skewers 🐷 - Pescado Fish of the day w/ sticky smoked hock sauce and fresh grapes 🍇🐟 Finally got the chance to try Movida and I was very impressed with their tapas! The flavour profile of the abalone was definitely spot on. Beautifully charred abalone paired so well with the sweetness and crunchiness of the pear, tartness from the finger lime and the umami from the butter sauce. Chef kiss 💋 That pork skewer was so tender that you can just swallow it. The Pex real was very interesting. The pine nut sauce was quite distinctive so you either love it or hate it 🤣 For the mains, the beef cheek was perfectly cooked, super succulent and tender but the star went to that smooth and silky cauliflower purée. I could munch on it all day. It was my first time having grapes and fish but they went so well together! I couldn’t describe it with words but it was simple yet sophisticated. The only let down was the Fideua. Seafood wasn’t fresh so the noodles tasted a bit fishy. Overall it was a lovely experience but food was on the expensive side.

Third visit to MoVida and it continues to wow! The stand out tapas were the anchoa (anchovy with smoked tomato sorbet), the croqueta (zucchini was pickled adding different texture to the croquette) and the tartar (beef tartare with almond and horseradish cracker). We also had the oysters with watermelon salsa picante sorbet. There was blood plum grated on top adding the smattering of plum colour that just added the visual pop to the oysters and they were fresh and delicious! The blue swimmer crab bisque was one of the specials today. A unique flavour to me that was very tasty! The food is soooo good and the staff were very friendly! Can't wait for my next visit!

One of the best Spanish restaurants. Movida made every single dish in between creative and tradition. Food is the best and we enjoyed the atmosphere. And the sangria is so refreshing.

Iconic Spanish tapas bar in Melbourne’s premier graffiti location, Hosier Lane. From the moment we stepped off the street we were warmly greeted by attentive staff. We were lucky enough to take a seat at the bar where the sensational bar staff were only too happy to recommend dishes and wine pairings. MoVida is a slick, well-oiled machine, with everyone from front of house to the kitchen providing superior service and excellent knowledge. The dishes were exquisito and delicioso!!! Each dish was stunning. We fully enjoyed our experience and will definitely return!

Movida is an institution of Melbourne's dining scene that we have wanted to visit for a very long time. The Spanish restaurant serves a range of Tapas (small entrees bites), Raciones (Sharing dishes) and desserts, alongside a rather generous wine list. Before our they served us freshly baked bread with olive oil and salt. A warm and satisfying appetiser. For Tapas we enjoyed Anchoa - Cantabrian Artisan Anchovy on Crouton with Smoked Tomato Sorbet. This was a deliciously salty snack, with the highlight being the cooling tomato sorbet that we were asked to spread on our crouton. Gambas These chargrilled Skull Island Prawn were amazing. They were butterfly cut and topped with chilli, garlic and Aioli, this combination of flavours really pops. Morcilla, Chorizo and Pork Belly with braise white beans. This authentic Spanish dish was amazing. I’ve never tried the Morcilla before. It was a spicy and sweet blood sausage. The chorizo sausage was very succulent but the portion could have been a bit more generous. The pork belly had the crispiest skin on top. The beans and sauce just gave this dish so much balance to the intense flavours of the meats. Must order dish! The service of the front of house team was great, they really knew their dishes. They have an allergy menu for dairy free diners like myself. We took our daughter along, but we wouldn’t do it again, it’s an adults only scene. If you’re looking for great Spanish cuisine in Melbourne, you’ve gotta check out Movida!

Oh what an experience. The tapas are crazy good. We got the air dried wagyu with truffle cauliflower puree and poached egg. Oh my lord it was one of the best things I've eaten in my life. The dried beef is basically prosciutto, and then combined with the funkiness of the truffle, smoothness of the cauliflower, and richness of that silky egg yolk. Yum. The sangria was ok. Not great. Not terrible. But great service and experience overall.

We dined in as a pretty large group, so we had the fixed set menu. Turned out to be a good thing because we got to try/ eat lots of dishes that we likely wouldn't have ordered otherwise. Love the variety of food given. Appreciate that they swapped out some for those with dietary restrictions too.

If you love tapas this should be on your must go to list. They are outstanding and almost as good as what you can get in Barcelona which is saying a lot. We had 5 different Tapas to share (would have liked some more but was to full) and a nice bottle of wine. The wine list is nice but overpriced, which is the only quasi negative thing to say. The servers were friendly and above average. Would recommend a reservation as it was packed and very popular

The food is delicious but the service could be better. Great value tasting menu with arguably too much food. Each was on point. Had a long wait between the tapas and the mains for some reason, odd when you look over and see people standing in the kitchen not doing anything, rather disappointing for a place of this standard. Can’t fault the food so hopefully they sort out the slack service. Keep up the good work!

The food was absolutely delicious! There wasn’t a single thing served that wasn’t a 10/10. We had Sam as our waiter and he was fantastic & really friendly. We don’t get to go out too much so it meant a lot to us to have such a nice evening.

One of the best Spanish restaurants in Melbourne! The ambiance and customer service are great. The tapas are especially outstanding and highly recommend. The only issue we had was that the lamb we ordered was a bit too greasy. Nevertheless, the overall quality of the food is fantastic!

Forgot to write a review back when I went in November, but I LOVED this place! Hands down some of the best Spanish food I've had outside of Spain. I highly recommend the Cecina which is wagyu beef and truffle potato foam (posted a video of what it looks like) and this is probably the best thing I've had in my life, just amazingly delicious. The venue is slightly loud indoors, a fair warning for those who get a bit of sensory overload like myself, but other than that I would absolutely come back here when I'm next in Melbourne.

Having tried the Next Door with my wife, date night, on our last trip to Melbourne, I since have had the chance to visit Movida original twice for work trip. The food quality is consistent, service friendly and efficient, and atmosphere intimate. I always felt welcome and knowing that I will be looked after. We have had a variety of dishes from aperitif, tapas and raciones! Excitement of yummy food makes you forget to take photos to savour and enjoy the food. I would recommend the blue fin tuna crudo, sheep milk cheese for aperitivos. Tapas dishes of Abrolhos Island scallop, cold smoked kingfish and Shark Bay blue swimmer are winners of umami mouth bites. For the share dish, Raciones, I would recommend the calamari, pork cutlet, and the market prawns are always the stars. Always too full for desert, we did love the sorbet and the flan. All very morish and a rounded ending. I know people have reviewed this place and in its 20 years, I welcome the continued service and good food. No doubt if you do visit, you will feel the same as well.

The tapas were mostly ok but very pricey for what it is. We tried the croquettes, tartare and anchovy. Our favourite was probably the tartare. The croquettes lacked balance and the sizes were too big which made the overall texture just too mushy. It’s also missing a sauce as the overall taste of the dish was very one tone. The tartare was a good size and the addition of shaved egg yolk worked well with the dish. The anchovy wasn’t bad but really not worth the price tag. The beef cheek main is overrated. The dish needs much more of the cauliflower purée to balance how heavy the meat is. The meat itself is very soft but sickeningly sweet and burnt. The duck leg was quite small for the price tag and a little dry. The baked rice was also undercooked and you can’t really taste the saffron flavour. If you’re coming here, I recommend just getting the tapas (keeping in mind the steep price tag) and skipping the mains entirely. While the tapas come out pretty fast, we were waiting forever for the mains…

After a number of years being a bit hit and miss, at this point Movida has got it's mojo back - celebration menu has the classics (e.g. pulpo and potatoes) and the drinks selection has improved with more choices of fino (better quality too) and the beer on tap (more choices please). If only the salt cod croquettas were back on the menu. Loved the kingfish, school prawns tapas and the crab bomba rice. Service was friendly and very attentive - didn't catch the name of our waiter but he was very good. Service was prompt, helpful and friendly and we had enough time to get to another venue despite a late booking. Looking forward to our next visit.

We went early to eat before the theatre, even at 5.30/6 this place had a buzz. We enjoyed the tasting menu, plenty of delicious food and interesting flavors. They forgot to put through our order for oysters through at the start of our meal, they were very apologetic and didn't charge us for the oysters.

Very nice service and I love the combination or Spanish flavours and the presentation of the dishes. The staff is so friendly. The wine is delicious. My best friend and I were looking for somewhere to eat lightly in CBD because we were not too hungry, but wanted some good food and wines. We had been to this place about 10 years ago, and noticed that we never went back! So we just wanted to try it again, and it was wonderful!! The service was on point, and especially Bruno was amazing, very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly, and timing was great for everything🙏🏻 My best friend and I go to many places to try out, and of course food need to be great, but the service makes such big differences to be satisfied. Atmosphere was very relaxing and great vibe. Will definitely go there again soon!

Was treated by my darling here for an Xmas pressie ❤️ we are foodies - period Must admit having read great reviews we were a bit surprised by the simplicity of the fit out - fair enough 👍 Our waiter Louis was just superb he even recommended a better wine than the serious sommelier intiial choice We choose mostly tapas and were amazed by all and two semi mains wagu beef & truffled potato foam and asparagus- just simply devine! Our only complaint was that every dish including the marinated olives simply had too much salt We suggested that possibly the chef smokes - often a cause for increased salt infused dishes in my long experience One more small but important complaint no GF bread for my gal - just not on in 2023 for a high end restaurant please include guys ? We shall be back for sure! Thank you Movida 🙏

It was alright, we were at the tapas bar on the corner. The octopus was absolutely delicious and tender/juicy (off the grill) and so were the churros w/hot chocolate for dessert, but the bistec came well done (they didn’t ask us how we’d like it) and it was tough and under seasoned, and the costillas (pork ribs) were just okay (not fall-off-the bone, lacking flavor, and they hadn’t removed the silver skin). So a hit and two misses on the protein. Probably worth a try if you stick to the tapas.

Unreal, felt like I was back in Spain, I had a lot and I mean a lot and felt bad I didn’t finish one of my plates. But the vibe and the food was just amazing, great service too , was always chucked up on and gave me information on the food to which was great. Easily one of my favourite spots in Melbourne and as off now writing this review, this is my third day in Australia 🤣 HALA MOVIDA

What a find!! Tucked away in a laneway in Melbourne is a fabulous Spanish resturant. The tapas is next level. You could not be disappointed with the food, atmosphere or staff service. Staff were welcoming and friendly and explained each dish. One resturant to revisit for sure.

To my Spanish friend it's quite authentic Spanish food with little adaptation. To me it's a nice place but generally salty in pretty all three dishes we ordered. My favorite out of the three is anchovies with burrata cheese, the salt tlreally bring out a lot of rich flavor from the fish

Exceptional experience and menu. The beef cheek with cauliflower purée was delicious. Also never knew kiwi and cheese goes that well together, wow! However if you’d prefer to have a more relaxed dining experience, we would highly suggest reading the menu and drink list before you go! It has a very unique menu and extensive wine list so to avoid feeling pressure to order, it would be good to have an idea of what you want ahead of time. Their wine/drink menu is 32 pages long and they don’t have time for you to read it all!

Decent Spanish tapas! The vibe here is pretty good and the restaurant is nicely decorated. The food was good but not amazing, I didn't feel like there were any stand out dishes from what we ordered. However it is still worth a try if you're in the area and can splurge a bit!

Melbourne’s most famous Spanish tapas restaurant & bar! 🇪🇸 Located down the city’s iconic Hosier Lane, this modern Spanish restaurant is loved by both locals and tourists alike 🙌 They specialise in tapas with a modern twist - every single dish is incredibly well-executed, inventive, and delicious! 😍 Our favourite tapas were the Ancho, Pez Real, Veira (but honestly you can’t go wrong with any option!) For mains, you must try the Cecina (air dried Wagyu Beef, Truffled Potato Foam & Poached Egg) - absolutely delicious and exceeded all expectations 🙌 Love the Sangria and the Jerez Express coffee cocktail!

Can’t really remember what I ordered here. One dish was highly recommended which had anchovy and a tot at spread which I found to be not bad, as not really an anchovy eater. The duck leg was tasty though. Good flavours.

Movida is generally one of my favourite places to eat. Incredible service. Very experienced waiters and in the case of last night, an impressively well informed sommelier. However the last two visits have not hit the mark as usual. The key with this place is to choose the dishes well. The classic and unchanging menu choices of the anchoa with tomato sorbet, croquettes, beef cheek, jamon and flan are unbeatable. But I didn’t love the tiny serve of abalone smothered in a salty, meaty sauce or the bizarrely heavy zucchini slivers atop a dense floury base. The eggplant and chickpea pancake didn’t taste of much except parsley salad. Can we please have some of the vegetarian classics back? Field mushrooms glistening in sherry, butter and thyme? Stuffed peppers? Something light and fresh? I’ll be back for more but hoping my vegetarian friends are more enthused by the offerings.

If you love tapas this should be on your must go to list. They are outstanding and almost as good as what you can get in Barcelona which is saying a lot. We had 5 different Tapas to share (would have liked some more but was to full) and a nice bottle of wine. The wine list is nice but overpriced.

So good. The anchovy. The fennel sorbet. The wine the smoked sword fish. Next level. Truly an amazing place to eat. Staff so helpful. Food is a wonder. If you can go here then go here.

I was surprised by this Spanish gem! I was expecting a generic tapas restaurant, as this restaurant has multiple locations. What I did find was exceptional service, friendly staff, and exauisatw Spanish tapas with a modern twist. The croqueta is fantastic, while the mussels and also duck empanada special should become a permanent fixture at this modern classic.

Always consistent and much needed after 2 months in lockdown. Tapas and Sangria hatd to beat with the little anchovy starters the stand out!

I went there with my partner to try the full set menu. The staff was really friendly and helpful and they let us remove some of the dishes from the menu since we weren't that hungry. Every dish was truly amazing and fresh especially the swordfish. We will definitely come back again.

Stopped here for drinks and dessert. Wow wow wow. The dessert was one of the best we've ever had, seriously. Next level. Great atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

One of my favourite restaurants in Melbourne. We tried all the tapas and everything was divine. The mains were also very delicious. Great service and suggestions from the guys there. I recommend it highly!

Great night full of good food and wine to celebrate end of yet another COVID lockdown. Love the vibe here, great service and the food were delicious. Or fav was the croquettes of the day and the abalones. I'm a sucker for a good flan and it was creamy smooth and down right delicious. Can't wait to come back here again.

Great tapas bar in Melbourne. The sardine and sorbet and swordfish and sorbet are just two of the many tapas dishes you should try. The sangria is good as is the location in one of Melbourne's lane ways.

Warm and cosy setting with delicious range of tapas! I think everything is just way too salty for this meal but maybe that's on us for ordering too many tapas and salty ingredient dishes. The duck (shared plate) was disappointingly underwhelming for the price but cooked well - 1 star. Service from all wait staff were fantastic.

Phenomenally delicious. 10/10. Anchoas are addictive. Absolutely flavour bombs. Very hard to pick a favourite dish, but if I had to I'd probably go with the wagyu/poached egg/truffle foam. Wwwwwow

Good friendly service, was happy to wait a few minutes for a table as it was very busy. There was a good selection on the menu. Will come again.

Excellent tapas, beautifully presented. So delicious. All meals scrumptious, especially beef cheek. Staff eager to please, without being overindulgent. Good knowledge of food and wine. Wine a little on high side cost wise, but some excellent Spanish offerings available.

After hearing so much hype about the food I was absolutely underwhelmed. I have an allergy to yeast & they couldn't even make me a fresh Tommies margarita ( margarita that doesn't contain cuantro, apparrently its all PRE mixed & they cannot even customise a simple cocktail to order). The female waitress was quite stuffy when we tried to order a drink or pay the bill. The food was very average overall. We just had a few dishes but I certainly would rush back that's all I would say.

After weeks in Spain we were looking forward to experiencing a little bit of the wonderful fare we had been enjoying there back home in Melbourne. Movida was fine but we wouldn't revisit. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Food didn't measure up to the hype - ordered set menu at $80 per person to be able to have a good range of options. Chicken & chorizo skewer - why? So simple but so average. Chocolate served with churros was like a weak milky cocoa - whatever happened to the (usual) dark, rich chocolate? Flan was delicious and so was the anchovy starter.

Went for dinner and asked for all the tapas selection. Although all tapas were very tasty, our absolute favourite ones were the swordfish, quail and anchovies. Service was impeccable and atmosphere great. Only problem is that this restaurant is not available in London! Loved it!
