My husband and I had previously come here for cocktails and really enjoyed our experience. So when they advertised for a cocktail paired menu night, we jumped at the opportunity. The space is beautiful and felt very special as there were only 3 other couples. If I had rhe cocktails separate, at rhe bar, I think they would have been quite enjoyable. The sangria was the best sangria I've ever had. However, the whole point of the night was that it was a paired experience with food and with that in mind, the night was a real let down and not at all worth the money. Firstly, my partner and I felt none of the cocktails paired well with the meals. They weren't balanced at all and every one of them was overly sweet (this coming from a sweet lover). Normally a pairing beings out a particular flavour in the food, or it might juxtapose to cut through sweetness or fat. The cocktails were like drinking desert with every meal. Secondly the food. Our menu was predominantly sea food and we could not eat at least 2 of the meals. The prawns were so fishy and not at all fresh that I actually (politely) spat it out of my mouth. Another dish had muscles that again, were not fresh at all. I was so sad! Gastronomy is my favourite and having had a good experience previously with their cocktails, I was pumped to have some good food. Considering the night had 5 meals and we could only safely eat 3 let alone that we had to then go get more food because we were left hungry, it was a real let down. Overall, I recommend going there for cocktails only.

Was suggested this place by a colleague of my brothers as a must while in Melbourne. They are absolutely correct. We came with no reservation and greeted by a very well groomed Maître who was able to find us a table with an hour restriction. Very happy with this. The cocktail menu is incredible as was the food menu. We just had the croquettes as we had already had dinner, but the waitress (Melissa I believe her name was) described them so well we just had to try and was not disappointed. We chose our first round of cocktails which were fantastic and very theatrical. The second round we asked Melissa for her recommendation and again was not disappointed. Decor and ambiance was perfect and despite no really uniforms, their staff were well dressed and suited the style of the bar. This place is a must! And hope the team keeps up the amazing work!

Love this place for their drinks and atmosphere! It's always exciting opening up their cocktail menu as there are so many options to choose from. I really like the way they are grouped too. Would highly recommend the Yuzu mule with rum if you're looking for something sweet and refreshing.

We had a ball here! Such friendly staff. The ambience of the place is a little noisy (wouldn't go here for a quiet drink), but fun and happy. The cocktail menu is a delight to read! Sooo many interesting and varied combinations! Do yourself a favour and visit - this place has to be experienced at least once in a lifetime!

really did love EDV! a super cosy, warm and dimly lit speakeasy that you’ll literally have to do laps to find! makes the visit just that much more exciting though! our service was fantastic with waiters being super aware of menu items and cocktail choices, was a little hard to grab their attention though! the everything platter was quite pricy for the quality and portion but enjoyable and ideal for a group. their potatoes were also incredible! the almond desserts was quite pasty. but their cocktails are what they do best, and it was extremely evident! you can really tell each drink has been thought out, flavours paired with purpose and they are executed well. this is a must visit spot in melb for a cosy drink. I can’t wait to return!!

In love with this place! It was full house when we arrived and it was very loud so not the best for people who are sensory sensitive. Definitely not a quiet bar at all. Make sure you reserve well ahead of time to secure a spot. We were so happy we were seated at the bar watching bartenders in action! Food was excellent and so well priced. Will definitely return - Our bartender was amazing and entire experience was faultless

A Melbourne institution. It’s been a longtime between drinks here for me and i’m happy to say it continues to uphold its formidable reputation as one the best Martini’s in town. This place is all about the theatre of drinking cocktails and does it to a very high standard. Finding its entrance is part of its fun

Just felt like my mate was taking me down an alley to be mugged, but thankfully it was another amazing gem in the crown of hidden bars in Melbourne. EDV, is well hidden, but not their reputation apparently. Although new to me, when I mention that I've been there, everyone says ..'how good are the cocktails!!' .. And they were darn fine. What I loved the most was our waitress, who was really a, err let's say, a cocktail sommelier! Her knowledge and joi de vivre in explaining them was infectious (Alice, I think her name was). The cocktails themselves were an adventure.. from fancy liquid nitrogenny concoctions to birch burnt/infused creations, for me, it was a cocktail carnival. Don't get me wrong, the tastes were probably too complex for this lager lad, but I'd go again just for the fun of it. If only they'd let zip in?! (Yep... Zippy Spam ahead in the photo's. Zip not happy he wasnt allowed to come... )

One of the best dinner and cocktail experiences we've ever had! We did Eau de Vie Melbourne’s Shared Cocktail Degustation. Eau De Vie is a bar straight out of 1920's prohibition America. From the moment you walk in (once you locate the secret entrance 😉) you are taken back to a much forgotten era. Once inside we were shown into the Library, home to their degustation table, for the cocktail degustation experience. It was made all the more enjoyable by our great host, Brody, who was exceptional, along with the amazing degustation delights created by the very talented chefs, and of course all the excellently paired cocktails, which helped top off what was a fantastic foodie and drinkies experience. Each cocktail was revealed in a different way, as well as how they were concocted before our eyes and then delivered to us. We were also lucky to be joined by seven other fun and friendly people. Very highly recommended for any lovers of great food and of course, cocktails!

Another hidden gem of a cocktail bar.. had to ask for directions as there was no signage. On entry it was a secret bar that needed to be found. I will definitely visit again. Expresso Martini done right and differently made it special.

Class act. Book a table and order their amazing cocktails. Or better yet, converse with the knowledgeable service staff and design a cocktail that you'd like with the flavours and tasting notes that you'd prefer for the evening. One of our favorite hang out spots with a group of friends.

Exceptional. So creative. So Delicious. Listen to the hype. It's there for a reason. Liquid nitrogen cream, a duck with smoke coming out of its mouth. What an experience. Such tasty combinations. Each drink is a new experience. We will be back for more. Clearly we need to try others. 10/10.

For sure on the upper end price wise for cocktails, but when you sum up the whole experience and the quality of the drinks the price is not at all the thing keeping me from going back. It’s such an experience, that it’s one to save up and savour for the special occasions. I can’t imagine how it could be improved. Such uniqueness and variety on the menu to make choosing just 1 drink impossible. Service to make you feel like you are the only table the waiter is servicing. Drinks are made quickly, presented together, and each is clearly very well thought out, for its place on the menu, the presentation, the theatre and of course the taste.

Really Just amazing.. and had one of the best cocktails here. Reserve if you don't want to wait. Finding the place could be tricky the first time.It is first right if you enter the Flinders lane from exhibition St and go till end and brown door on the right. Amazing service and amazing ambience. Do try.

Cocktails are super yummy. If you don’t know what to order, leave it to the experts. It is table service and the staff are very attentive. Here is just not about the drinks. Here is about showing Melbourne what it’s like to have a proper cocktail with the service/knowledge to go with it

@edvmelbourne 📍CBD Eau De Vie is a classic, 1920’s America inspired cocktail bar located in Melbourne’s CBD. The entrance is discreet, hidden down Malthouse lane. They also have a location in Sydney, which once made it to #13 on the Worlds Best Bar list. 🏆 Secretly behind a book case, you can find the Whisky Room, with a large collection of rare and exclusive whiskies. It is also home to their Bottle Lockers, where you can purchase your favourite spirit bottle and store it for your next visit. 🥃 Regardless of your usual choice of poison, you will most likely be able to enjoy anything from their menu. Almost all of them come with some sort of theatrics and a story. To pair with them they also offer a small menu of plates to dine from. 🍴 We enjoyed all of our cocktails, but my favourite was the Tiny Danza, which comes in a flute glass, had a strong taste of capsicum and chilli. If you like a Chilli Marg, this is reminiscent. 🥰 The Espresso Zabaione also impressed us, which comes with your choice of vodka, rum or whisky. Liquid nitrogen is used to make the cream set on top, overall very strong but unique. The Honey Butter Old Fashioned #2 was a nice version of the classic and the Banderillero is served in a Viking horn! It is often completely booked especially on the weekends so make a booking or prepare for a wait! We walked in and joined a waitlist which got us in within the hour. Up there in my top favourite bars, a great spot to come for a date night! The Eau-de-Vie Library is home to their degustation table where they host a 5 course, cocktail degustation experience. This is $175 and includes food and drinks.

Went here for my 21st birthday and this bar is definitely a place everyone should experience! At first I didn't know that it was hidden as there were no signs whatsoever leading to the bar but ended up finding it with a little bit of help. We were very early to our booking but the staffs were very accommodating and the customer service was immaculate. They explained all the cocktails that were ordered, definitely order your next drinks of choosing after they serve you as the bartenders take their time making them but for me it is definitely a plus as it shows they actually do it properly. Also ordered the meat platter and was very delicious. Definitely would recommend anyone to go here 🙌🏼

Top notch service and wonderful experience. Not only you will be treated as a royalty, but the service and staff there are amazing, very knowledgeable. I went there with my partner on a date and by myself, and both times it was a great experience. Their menu is very interestingly presented, my favorite was their version of Bloody Mary and I don't even like the classic one. The overall vibe of the place is very eclectic and elegant. Very worth visiting. They also follow up on you if you liked the experience, wow! My recommendation is to book a spot. The manager will contact you to check if there is anything to make your visit better, top notch approach I'll say!

Perhaps one of the best bars in all of the world (and I feel after visiting 48 countries I can say this!) I've done corporate events, degustations (amazingly priced) and visited for a cocktail ot two more times than I can count. From the moment you walk through the hidden door, to the atmosphere, decor and even how the amazing bar staff are dressed, you are immediately transformed into another dimension. Their espresso Martini (pictured 3 times at 3 different events) is THE best cocktail of all time!

Came here late on a Saturday night and we were lucky enough to get a table really quickly! All the cocktails and food were delicious and although all the staff were amazing special shout out to Ellie who we asked to surprise us with drinks that she thought we would like individually and she nailed it! Would recommend this place to anyone and ask for Ellie if you want a great drink!

Cool lil hole in the wall/speakeasy. Great staff, Defs worth checking out. Liquor selection is extensive to say the least. Big wall of booze haha. Our cocktails were pretty and the selection is creative and intriguing. Our drinks just lacked on impressive mixing/taste. Presentation was good, missed the mark a lil but would come back again to impress friends with the venue 😜

Amazing! Next level cocktails and service.. yes it’s pricey compared to most cocktails but they are not like most cocktails.. they go beyond! We couldn’t help ourselves and doubled up and Eau De Vie will be a must stop when we visit Melbourne each time and can’t wait to be back.

We had a great fun visit to this awesome little speakeasy bar with its impressive selection of amazing cocktails. Amazing cocktails, and excellent vibe/atmosphere. The thrill of feeling like you’ve stumbled onto a great Melbourne secret, from the discrete entrance, to a cool oasis of cellar like drinking experience. They do it very well. Definitely worth booking ahead, as it can get crazy, and wait times can be long. Considering just how busy it is, wait staff are generally very attentive, friendly and know their products which is refreshing. Due to the cramped nature though, it can get a little noisy, and hard to keep a quite conversation going.

Been over here several times. My favourite cocktail bar in Melbourne. There are so many unique cocktails to choose from. And each cocktail comes with a show. Love their take on an espresso martini, next level - just like a dessert. Great for an after dinner drink. If you haven’t been here, you’re missing out! Highly recommend checking this place out. It could be your favourite cocktail bar too. (Note: it’s hidden, was a bit tough for me to find it the first time, but I saw people coming out of somewhere and followed them)

A special place with more than special drinks. We had a great time at Eau De Vie! The theatrical drinks are amazing and the time flies, so be prepared to it, or give a go to the staff recommendations.

  • 3/5 Deepali S. 1 year ago on Google
The bar itself is beautiful and the place has a good vibe. However, service is slow and cocktails are extremely overpriced. We paid $27 for one cocktail that was finished after two sips literally. Was a nice experience after all but I wouldn’t come back again.

  • 3/5 Shane S. 2 years ago on Google
Great place, but so loud and warm. Also, finding the entrance is like a puzzle! We left after a short while, just too claustrophobic, and we spent $138 in 15 mins. So go if you like a secret place and deep pockets. Oh and be careful of the liquid nitrogen drinks. Seriously careful!

Visited this bar at a busy Sat night, and absolutely love this hidden gem. Very nice atmosphere, and had a enjoyable time here. Love their creative menu, drinks look great and it’s tasty as well. This hidden bar won’t take you too long to find, and it’s totally worth the wait to experience some of the best cocktails and most friendly staff in Melbourne. Nestled discreetly, this hidden gem, Eau de Vie, is a sanctuary for the discerning palate. Beyond its concealed entrance lies a world of artisanal cocktails that redefine mixology. The ambiance is intimate, with dim lighting casting a warm glow on the vintage decor. The expert mixologists craft concoctions that are both inventive and masterfully executed, elevating the drinking experience. From the first sip to the last, Eau de Vie is a clandestine haven where every cocktail tells a unique and memorable tale.

Awesome cocktail bar, extremely entertaining watching the cocktails been made, an art form in itself, just as impressive as the taste of the cocktails Maybe just need to work on the atmosphere a little, was a little like going to a football game which is unusual for a classy cocktail bar

  • 4/5 Cz A. 2 years ago on Google
Absolutely love the ambience! Have been here a few times and the drinks can be rather mysterious but always fun to try all the drinks. The wait times for seating and/or drinks can be a hit or miss depending on the busyness though.

Sadly we’re disappointed - as long time customers we were looking forward to catching up with friends and family post lockdown. Our experience was not at all what we expected, particularly as restrictions on capacity are now off. Rather than an intimate bar setting it was though we were in a nightclub when we were seated. The music was so loud we had to shout to be heard. The floor staff made us aware of the restricted sitting time (why is this still needed as restrictions are off) and rather than chat and enjoy a relaxed experience we felt pushed to put our drink/food orders through. The drinks were amazing as they always are but the night left a sour taste in our mouth.

Sixth visit. Brought some new friends Wanted to order cocktails from the bar so friends could watch them being made Waitress insisted she would order and would let us know when they were being made so my friends could watch Instead someone showed up at the table and poured a little liquid nitrogen over the drinks. Definitely not the same quality. Only the edges of the espresso martini was frozen Mentioned this to waitress who would not listen and told us that it was the same drink As I said. Sixth visit. Told her we would pay no problem but dissatisfied with the drinks we got. Only got attitude back This place plays on spectacle. This was our first less than awesome experience. I I’ll be back but staff need more customer service training. Picture of how busy the bar actually was

If you aiming for quiet bar this is not the place for you. If you aiming for the best cocktail with jazz music in Melbourne then you must try this one! They have diversity of flavors for people like fruity, rich, savory tastes. If you have no idea about what to drink just chatting with waiters, they’re find a amazing drink for you. Foods are tasty but careful with their cocktail oysters (that’s the one knock me off😅😵‍💫) They also do master class for wine tasting, but you need to book a reservation first. Little reminder is check the bill, they didn’t mean that but there’s mistake on it. Highly recommend and will willing to visit in the future🍸 ⚜️For the people got problems to find, the entry of the bar is close to the bin next to the step (as you see on the photo)

Food and cocktails were delicious! Vibe of the secret bar is 10/10. Almost like you've walked into a period piece or a home of a monarch. The food and beverage service was rather slow, although it was quite busy so this likely played a part. My group was scowled at by the person receiving people at the entrance/please wait sign, for wanting to pay, having not been made aware that we were supposed to pay from our table.

It was my and my wife's 43rd birthday celebration, and more important, our first night out in 4.5 years. (Kids + first generation migrants with no family support network.) I'd booked out a spot there, after seeing all the glowing reviews online. After dinner, I intentionally took my wife for a bit of a walk around the Paris end of the CBD, and when we turned into the dodgy-looking laneway where Eau De Vie was, she questioned it. I've never been here either, but reviews said to look for a non-descript door, and pull it open. And that's what I did. we were sat directly facing Jack, who was super engaging, and gave us 2 x recommendations each. We told him we wanted a bit of drama and flair, and also what we liked, and were not disappointed. What I also like - and this is very important in the Covid era that we live in - was the team adhered STRICLY to the mask-wearing rules. This meant unless you're sitting down, you're required to wear a mask at all times. If only more F&B operations practised this; I'm a small business owner myself and can understand the limitations on staffing, costs etc but this simple practice left a good impression on me. The cocktails were flamboyantly prepared, and my wife and I had a wonderful time. Jack topped it all right at the end, with a complimentary shot for us each. Everything was just on point, and we enjoyed our 75 minute at Melbourne's best cocktail bar. My wife and I had a fantastic time. We'd come back again one day.

What a spot! Loved the whole experience these guys have created! I got to try the nitro cream on the espresso and the mezcal horn one, and the description provided on each drink was an added bonus 🤩 The menu was intense but laid out in a cool way, the picture key was a win for me. Service was exceptional and always a win to sit at the bar!!

I organised a cocktail masterclass here to kick off a hens party, and I would definitely recommend! And the guy that hosts it can read the group and wasn’t offended when we were a lot more giggly and paying less attention by the last cocktail. Lucy, the venue coordinator was also an absolute gem!
