ORDERED: 🥟 Boiled pork dumplings (12 pieces) ($17.80) 🥟 Shao Long Bao $16.80 🥟 Wonton with hot chilli sauce (8 pieces) ($13.80) 🥟 Pan fried dumplings (8 pieces) ($19.80) 🌱  Spring onion pancake ($8.80) 🐔  Diced chicken with vegetables ($28.80) 🐟 Fish Fillets in hot chilli oil ($35.80) 🍚  Steam Rice ($3.80) 🥭 Mango Pudding ($9.80) It was $36.60pp between 7 adults which includes card and weekend surcharge. REVIEW: The dumplings are great at HuTong Dumpling bar! But as with many good food choices, too much of one thing (dumplings) can get a little overwhelming. 😥 💖  My favourite was the shao (xiao) long baos and the pan fried dumplings. The pan fried dumplings are filled with pork and the HuTong chefs do the cool ting where they pan fry it all at once, creating a plate in of itself.  🍽️ The sauce is pre-made with a combination of vinegar and soy sauce but definitely more on the tangy side. 💗 I would also recommend the fish fillets in hot chilli oil! The fish fillets they usually use is basa so it's incredibly soft but it still holds its shape in the soup. It's too savoury to have by itself, so you might want to consider having it with rice too. ❌  The weakest was the spring onion pancake. Since it's rolled up, it becomes a little dry. I prefer the threaded version where tit's in crispy little flakes 😰. ✔️  Service was very friendly and they were very accommodating of children. They offered to change up the cutlery, provided an extra plate and napkins... because well, kids. We left the pram downstairs, but unsure if there's an accessible elevator to use. Otherwise you may need to walk up some staircases with a kid in hand. Atmosphere is very nice.

Traditional Chinese dumpling place that has a reputation and tradition of making it good in Melbourne. So had to give it a try. The place looks like a traditional Chinese restaurant so the ambience was on point. The Shai long bao and the pan fried dumplings were good. The star of the table was the deep fried tofu with salt and pepper. The noodle was pretty average. All in all a pretty good place and the service was pretty alright for the night.

Mar 2022. Visited HuTong at the recommendation of friends. Bookings are always required as this venue is extremely popular. The manager was quite stressed downstairs, not helped by rude clients pushing for a table even though they'd been told twice already that the restaurant was fully booked. We were on the second floor and served by the wonderful Dee. Dee was super friendly and talked us through the Menu items suggesting complimentary dishes. The meal was one of the best dumpling experiences in Melbourne of all time. The beans and pork mince were THE best. Such a simple dish, done superbly! If you're in town, definitely give HuTong a try.

[3.5] We came to this place as it was highly recommended for its authentic dumplings. We booked a table as we weren't sure how crowded the place would be on a weekend. To our surprise, it wasn't. We were taken by very friendly staff to our table and assisted us with the menu. We ordered the following: Shao-long Bao (8 Pieces) - $12.80 Wantons with Hot Chilli Sauce (8 Pieces) - $10.80 Szechuan Bean Curd with Minced Pork - $15.80 Fish Fillet in Hot Chilli Oil - $28.80 The dumplings were amazing and were served at the right temperature, so you can tuck into them without worrying that you will burn your tongue. The tofu was amazing and was probably the star of the dishes we ordered. The disappointment was when we got the fish filet. Not only did it take a long time to get, but the portion was HUGE, and it was honestly tasteless! They could see that we were only two people, and could have advised us about the size of the dish since the picture gave us the impression that it was a decent size portion good for two. The fish had zero taste and seemed like it was swimming in a chilli sauce without picking up any of the flavours. Despite our experience with this dish (which I will never recommend to anyone unless you are used to this kind of food), we loved the rest of the food and the friendly service. They were very attentive and made sure that our Jasmine teacups were never empty. We will come back again for more dumplings, and the Jasmine Tea.

My new go to place for classic or traditional Chinese food. Went with a group of 10 which meant I was able to try a variety of dishes. We ordered the following: - Shao-Long Bao - Wantons with Hot Chilli Sauce - Boiled Pork Dumplings - Dry Chicken in Hot Chilli - Special Fried Rice - Deep Fried Squid in Salt and Pepper - Spring Onion Pancake I do have to apologise as I was in a group setting and we ate all the food before I could take more photos. Every dish was tasty without being too oily or salty. The only dish that wasn't as good as the rest was the spring onion pancake. The Shao-Long Bao had a good amount of juice in the dumpling (I hate it when they are dry) and had good flavour with the filling. The other stand out dish for me was the Dry Chicken in Hot Chilli. This packs a real punch (Szechuan spice) and wasn't easy for me to handle the spice but it was so tasty it was well worth it. Staff are super friendly and attentive and made my experience in a group more enjoyable. I'm not an expert but I felt like they cook the classic dishes very well. The salty and spicy flavours you would expect from a Chinese restaurant. I will be coming back as a go to place when I'm in the mood for traditional Chinese food.

Do yourself a favor: make a reservation, be on time, and order the xiao long bao. The best you’ll have outside of Asia. People don’t come here for Michelin star service - if you come with high expectations for service, you will be disappointed. Come with an appetite and ready for the dumplings: xlb, and the fried ones. Make them swim in chili sauce and vinegar. Get the fried rice and the spicy fried chicken. Your head will spin after a phenomenal meal.

Food and fitout are good, but service needs improvement. For those who have issues with stairs, please be aware that much of the seating is upstairs and you need to walk up a lot of stairs. There is very limited seating on the ground floor, which is mainly used as the kitchen.

Nothing to write home about unfortunately and left still feeling hungry. Pretty basic taste wise so not sure if I'll be going back when I visit Melbourne again. Good location.

I really like the vibe of this place. The green tea is quite special and added well to the experience. The variety and taste of dumplings served are good.

Everyone has their favourite dumpling place in Melbourne, so it's contentious to say a place is the best. While maybe not the best, this is one of my favourites and I love the chili wontons - a must try dish! The atmosphere is cozy, the staff are really lovely, nice and service is very fast. Enjoy the aromas from multiple dishes while you dine, and be sure to have a peek in the kitchen window in the ground floor to watch the master dumpling makers at work. Price is great given the food portions. Add this one to your list when you want something a step up from your "dirty dumpling" joint.

Had Xiao long bao, pan fried dumplings, fried noodles and black pepper beef stir fry. They’re all good. My favourite was the black pepper beef stir fry (don’t remember the exact name) and it was really good. Went there on Friday night with walk-in and had seats with limited time. Still enough time though. Looks busy and popular.

The Xiao Long Bao are excellent. Unfortunately the other food is very average and not worth it. The only reason to come here would be for the Xiao Long Bao

Long established dumpling restaurant with some deliciousness on the menu. We ate here ahead of attending to footy as service in generally prompt without trying to hustle you out the door. Recommend the wantons in a chilli sauce and the crystal prawn dumplings and if you like a battered calamari then the salt and pepper squid is a great dish to indulge in fried food. On this visit we found our dumplings could have been a little warmer although they were cooked through so perhaps sitting a while after steaming.

There was a queue outside so we tried it. Dumplings were ordinary, in fact the coating was thick and the pork inside was dry. Much to be desired. The vegetarian fried rice was ok, just ok. Reasonably priced.

Our last night in Melbourne and what a place to have dinner! We had a booking at 8:30 and were seated right on time and the second we sat down we had the waiters come to us straight away 👍 Now to the food... it was absolutely amazing easily the best dumplings I have ever had!!! If you ever find yourself in Melbourne would 100% recommend this place

Great atmosphere & decor but the food was pretty ordinary and it’s a bit more expensive than the other options in Chinatown. The pan fried Dumpling were decent but tasted quite stodgy. The fried rice lacked seasoning but was a good portion, as was the pork noodles. The wontons in spicy soup was definitely one to order though.

Huge range of dumplings, in a more secluded venue, away from the byo restaurants on the main strip. The crab meat and prawn dumplings were good but the Har Gow from The Empress of China are still the best. The skin/wrapping is more gelatinous here, still some of the best dumplings in the city.

The food wasn't bad. However, the service to the customers was very unfriendly, so I never wanted to go again. The first one was discrimination against those who reserved and those who didn't. I was very surprised by the different ways of serving customers. The second one was that even though there were two people, if we ordered more than two dishes, there was no room for the food on the table. I was uncomfortable throughout the meal, and we couldn't fill our hunger, so we ended up going to another restaurant to eat.

There are many other better places than this one. 👎 Shao long bao had a thick outer cover - Go to a local place like Shanghai Street or Juicy Bao 👎 Chinese brocolli had only stems ( almost no leaves) 👍 Wonton and Pan fried dunplings were good 👍 Soups were ok No 👌 dish They served wrong twice for a table of 2 Also, didn't give me the option to say no to tip - kind of moved ahead and said - how much would you like to tip? $135 for 2 ppl Not returning!

Absolutely incredible dumplings! I didn't even know I could enjoy Dim Sum this much but the signature prawn dumplings may have changed my life. I would pass on the fried rice though. Staff was friendly and helpful as well. The building is small and you'll likely have to go up one or two flights of stairs for seating; make sure you arrive early or are ready for a wait.

This place is popular for a reason, very good food. Probably the best xiao long bao and chili wanton I’ve had. The wrappers are a bit thick and chewy, big pieces and delicious fillings. Also had the pork ribs salt & pepper. Very tender meat and delicious.

Nice dumpling restaurant. Three stories tall, great food, good service, great for meet ups with friends or family. The seats were a little uncomfortable when sitting for a long time. The interior decoration was nice, lots of oriental decor. Tried ordering duck dumplings, but they ran out. Went with the pork dumplings instead.

I ordered the following: Green beans Spring onion pancakes Xiao long bao Crispy fried chicken in hot chilli All of it was delicious. I especially liked the fact that they use quality ingredients. The chicken was fillet (eg. white meat) which is a rarity in chinese cuisine. It was one of the best dishes I can remember having at a Chinese restaurant. Cooked to perfection. Also pretty fun to sit on the ground floor and watch the kitchen do their thing and make dumplings 🥟 😋 Definitely try to get here early or make a reservation because it is booked out. We go here regularly for the birthdays of our friends and they're always great. We have a variety of dietary requirements among our friends and find that they are able to cater to/have a wide range of food! They're always friendly and have great service! Food comes quickly and is really good! We always book because they get busy and we're usually a large group (6 or so).

Xiao long bao skin is so thick and the soup inside was so little. The skin that they used is different from the traditional ones from Din Tai Fung (perhaps this is Beijing style?). The skin is more chewy and glutinous, and is thick. Didn't really enjoy it unfortunately, and this place seems to have high ratings from the non-Chinese. If you're a Chinese looking for authentic xlb in Melbourne, I wouldn't recommend this place. The pan-fried dumplings were better in terms of flavour wise and fillings. Service from the host seems a bit forcefully friendly? Did not feel warm or welcomed maybe cos we do not look wealthy or wear any designer brand (I don't know). I feel very judged here. Overall would not come back here to dine if I were to visit Melbourne again.

Very good food. Excellent service! The staff is very attentive and friendly. They make the HuTong experience memorable. However, I did not expect them to ask for tips. I really hope that they get paid fairly even without tips.

This place is incredible, the food is always fresh and delicious. Portions are generous and decent prices. We have only visited around lunchtime, and the downfalls based on my experience are: the place is always cold, can't remove your jacket, and the staff could be a bit more polite. Other than that, the food worths a visit. Best dumplings in town

The atmosphere here is pretty nice. You can get Chinese food at HuTong, so I tried their Xiao Long Bao and Wontons with Hot Chilli Sauce. I was looking forward to Pan-fried Dumplings, but they don’t make them anymore. I ended up getting food poisoning at the end of the day, but I’m not sure which of the dishes it was. And the staff were nice. The Xiao Long Bao are okay. They were a little plain, but this could just be me. The soup had leaked out of some of them, so some were dry inside. The Wontons with Hot Chilli Sauce are alright too. The sauce is a bit sweeter than other stores, which is a good thing if you’re into this.

The OG dumpling house, a trip to Melbourne isn’t complete without stopping in here for a xiao long bao, chilli dumplings and chilli fried chicken. Great staff, the gentleman on the door has been working there for years and is always friendly and hospitable. Make sure you book so you’re not disappointed! They have some walk in spots for singles and couples but don’t count on it.

Sept 2022: I have great memories of this place. I think it is nowhere near as good as it used to be or I was much easier to please 10+ years ago! Siao long bao ($16) nowhere near as good as din Tai Fung. The bao wrapping much too thick. Eggplant & Scallop claypoy ($35) was ok but too sweet and only 5 (or 6?) scallops. Special fried rice was average ($10). Overall ok food but not worth it for the price. Friendly efficient service though.

Best dim sum and dumpling place in Melbourne! If you’re seated on the first floor, you even get to see them make the dim-sums.

Hutong has a really good menu and range of food choices for all. They had a lot of different dishes for vegetarians. We ordered the spinach dumplings and the silky bean curd spring rolls. The Chinese tea choices are great too! We enjoyed all the different flavours and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I would recommend giving their food a go if you're craving dumplings and happen to be in the city.

If you reserved, you are goin to second floor, you didn't first floor. Recommend the Chili wontons and shao long baos. Their shao long baos were great. The skin of the Dumplings were thin enough. Only had one With no soup inside due to the ripped skin. Have the soup dumplings with ginger soaked in soy sauce.
