Last spot on the Melbourne trip was to the historic Hopetoun tea rooms. It’s moved from its original location a little further from Bourke St into an underground historic site. The tea rooms have the Devonshire tea arrangement with a huge range of teas to buy, served in tea pots. You can also get scones, sandwiches and beautiful cakes. They sell teas to buy and take home

We arrived around 4:15pm on a Saturday, and only had the option of ordering cakes and tea. They have a wonderful selection of tea, and if you are a Earl grey fan, you are in for a treat! We ordered the earl grey with rose petals and earl grey with lavender flowers and they both taste excellent! Great selection of cakes to choose from too! 🍰 I think the variety of cakes changes everyday, but they all look delicious. Highly recommend you try this place when you are in Block Arcade! We had a wonderful time!

Excellent experience. The classic Early Grey tea (7th Earl of Hopetun) they offer was bright and smooth. Beautiful presentation. I also ordered a vanilla scone which they should rename to a biscuit because that is what it really is. It is super soft and fluffy and doughy delicious. But crunchy or crumbly like a real scone but still superbly delicious. It comes with jam and sweet cream and you'll be sad once you ate it all haha. They also have a range of other sweets and teas they'll help you navigate. And the kitchen is glass so you can see how careful, fresh, and transparent their pastries are. Note: the restaurant is a bit hard to find as it's tucked in the garment in an alley but just follow the signs. Also no wifi so you can't work here. And limited seats.

Visited their new location just off Bourke St (entrance on McKillop St) which has a more modern feel but still retains that classic English tea room look. Cake window wasn’t quite as grand as the previous location but still enjoyed the cake and staff were lovely.

Visited Hopetoun Tea Rooms in Aug 2023 on a friends recommendation. Awesome visit with the Mrs, great combo of food to have with the must have teas. Such a diverse selection of teas to choose from. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Would def recommend this place for a couple to have some chilled time with each other.

Cakes and tea were pretty good but it was a little uncomfortable there because I kept noticing one of the staff (maybe manager) was snappy towards the other waiters/waitresses. We weren’t there for long but they immediately started taking plates away and brought the bill to our table when there wasn’t even a queue out the front and we weren’t done with our drinks. I was hoping to enjoy the cakes but it honestly felt like they were expecting us to scoff our cakes down quickly and pay up.

Love the vintage setup and the staff were very friendly. The place was not busy when I visited around noon. The food and coffee were great. I even got served the tea of the day on the house. Highly recommend the orange danish if you like tangy and sweet pastries.

Amazing ambience! and really good service from staff especially "Reena". She was very polite, enthusiastic and friendly. The historic interior gives a delightful touch to the experience.

A disappointing experience. There is so much potential with the history of the tearooms. The staff have no service skills and things are clunked around. The cake was served with a large fork not a cake fork. There are so many tables crammed in that it’s not pleasant to be in. It would be far better to recognise the history with well trained staff, who are carefully groomed and tidy rather than slap dash. Use trays, cake forks and research the art of taking tea in these times and you will honour the history. At the moment with the awful service and lack of charm it’s just an old tearoom with a nice cake window. Take a photo of the window and give it a miss.

Visited yesterday 15 July 2022.. Stood outside to wait for a table for 10 mins. That was fine. Got to the door and asked for table for 3. Told couldn’t do, we could see tables inside so asked to be seated side by side as a 2 and 1. That was OK. Ordered sandwiches. Salad selection bread was stale. Roast beef on dark rye came out on whole meal bread. My daughter has a wheat allergy so we requested rye per the menu. β€œDont do”. Asked for gluten free bread. Sandwich came out. Bread wasn’t just stale was like dry toast. We had eaten half our sandwiches . Had one cup of tea and the bill was put on our table. We hadn’t indicated we were leaving . We were planning on having cake - the whole point of going to the Tea Room. Hadn’t made a fuss or complained. There was no queue of people waiting to come inside. It was 2pm. I got up and paid the bill. Advised we had wanted cake too but if they wanted us to leave we would. So we got up and left. A very disappointing experience for the $$$. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

I bit disappointed on my choice of the strawberry sponge cake, was 80% cream and very little cake πŸ™, should be 80% cake with cream. Needs to be renamed cream strawberry cake!

Was referred to this tea room, because of their great coffee. But with all the choices of tea, me partner and I decided on some tea and some food. The scones were delicious and the jam and cream were so fresh. The staff were very knowledgeable about the tea options and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended their new venue just off Burke St.

After 3yrs back to the Hopetoun tea rooms, feeling time like an arrow. The tea room originally in the Royal Arcade Block actually remain open now, same classical as past time. Always one of the signature place in CBD.

The perfect pav at Hopetoun Tea Rooms is complemented with a fine selection of organic teas. The alleys & arcades that characterise Melbourne are well worth the wander, especially when you can pause at an oasis like this.

We found this gem while exploring Melbourne today. The staff were attentive and sat us quickly, providing water before it could be asked for. We wanted cake and had to take turns stepping outside to pick due to no list on the menu. I ordered a coffee which was not only disappointing in size but the taste was poor by Melbourne standards. The dark hot chocolate was lovely but also small and we were charged more than the price listed on the menu. The triple chocolate cheesecake and lemon meringue were lovely and light however lacked that extra bit of punch you hope for, particularly with the lemon. Despite this we would come again and have tea rather than other choices and try some different items.

Had the Devonshire tea for two, it was lovely . The atmosphere is so quiet and relaxing away from the hustle and bustle outside. Awesome little Cafe where they make everything by hand and there is a window where you can watch all the goodies being made . The homemade raspberry jam for the scones was so delicious and packed full of flavour. The coffee was really good and they have every tea imaginable with a tea expert to discuss your every want, not to mention it all gets served on a beautiful tray with matching cups and plates. Yummy cakes and sweet treats would definitely go back and recommend for everyone with a sweet tooth.

So old world charm! It is what I imagine a French patisserie to be. The cheesecake was so light and creamy. The frangpani pie such a fruity, textured experience. Lovely to enjoy morning tea without feeling bloated afterwards. Next time I'm going for the high tea! The only drawback is the number of people squeezed into that delightful room, but we didn't have to sit in the arcade to get a table as many did. This made the service maybe a little slower, but they also set up 3 high teas in the time we were there! Wonderful experience! Oh, and mind the step!

Good coffee. Yummy apple strudel. A popular dining spot that was quite busy even late afternoon. A wide selection of sweets such as cheesecases, apple strudel and more to tempt the taste buds all washed down with a selection of teas or coffee. High teas available for those tempted.

I was fortunate to get a seat here in one of the iconic high tea place in town without a long waiting. The tea selection indeed is incredible. The flavour, the perfect temperature and the scent, has also perfectly blended with the sweet desserts i had which is tiramisu and fig chocolate cake. Due to its fame, there usually be lots of people queue to get a seat, and since its tables are considered small in size, bringing children and babies wouldn't be as comfortable to enjoy the high tea experience.

From the entrance I feel welcomed to the place, I tried the carrot cake and some tea. The cake was fresh and fluffy. The staff are friendly and nice especially the lady who meet me in the entrance. The atmosphere there is cosy and makes u feel as u are in victorian home style. I enjoyed my experience, and If I could give u more than 5 stars,i will.

Ordered a triple cheesecake from here which looked really delicious. The slice of cake I received had a dead mosquito on top of it which was frankly disgusting. But I paid $12.20 for it so I still ate it. The cake itself tasted exactly like the chocolate cheesecake you can get from Woolworths. Was highly disappointing. Tasted incredibly sugary with none of that rich chocolate decadence you'd hope for. This place has a nice atmosphere and beautiful interior, but the quality of the cake was really poor for the price. Would not recommend.

The Apple Mix Berry Tart is a personal favourite of mine. It places in my top 10 tarts I’ve had in my lifetime. Definitive 9.5/10 The Portuguese Tart is also creamy and the pastry is substantial. 8/10 The cakes have a great balance of tartness and texture. 8.5/10 A personal 5 star location for the tarts.
