No dishes that surprised me on their Set Menu. $95pp, I feel not worth it at all. The 'fancy' black carrot actually was wrapped in burned charcoal skin, it's a good idea for decorating however I don't think it's healthy at all. The black olives were super salty. They probably use vinegar to cook the mushroom so the umami of the mushrooms is all covered by the sourness. Also, I feel the mushroom is so hard to cut...the mushroom...so hard to cut...We had 5 potato brothers on one skewer. We have been told they had different shapes so the textures will taste different. I can only say that the green creamy sauce is the highlight of this potato dish. Then, think about having all these semi-cold dishes in a restaurant with insufficient heating on a cold winter night...Seriously speaking, after this meal, three of us went to a restaurant in Chinatown and had some hot dishes before we went home.

I had the opportunity to dine at the chefs table here tonight and the food was super delicious. The dishes were inventive and tasty and the staff were really lovely! Cocktails were tasty as too!

Wonderful restaurant, if only the food was not so salty. I would still recommend to try it once, since it’s very innovative. Some dishes would have been amazing had the salt level been better controlled. My favourite was the radish and shallots in kombu fat. The first round was perfect, the kombu fat sauce was a revelation, the radish and shallots the perfect bite, the second round the sauce was so salty it was impossible to enjoy the dish as it was meant to be eaten as I had to scrape of the sauce from the perfectly cooked veg. The hash brown with xo sauce - the xo sauce was also so salty. Bruschetta was nice, loved the ricotta, but the pickled mushrooms were also , you guessed it, too salty. The best dish was the pistachio frangipane tart as it was the dessert course. The pistachio base was delicious. The smoked beetroot was also good, although nothing to write home about.

The service is befitting the fine dining experience that they advertise. That being said they definitely want you to spend in excess of $75 per person. Always looking for the upsell on drinks or more dishes. We had one cocktail and three à la carte dishes. We were asked if we wanted to order more a few times. The espresso martini was delicious. The flatbread was exceptionally delicious and I could have eaten two more of them. I highly recommend it. The watermelon ceviche was really nice and a really fun use of watermelon as an ingredient. I can easily recommend this as well. The BBQ mushrooms were unfortunately disappointing at their price point. They were yummy and spicy, but our waiter had told us before we ordered that the price point should reflect the serving size and we found that the BBQ mushrooms at $45 was kind of the smallest dish of the three if not the same size. As nice as they were they didn't taste like anything I couldn't do at home so unfortunately I can't recommend them. Overall I'd recommend dining at Smith and Daughters, especially as a vegan. I'd be keen to go back to try more of their dishes and eat the bread again.

Delicious food! We got two small dishes (Lisa bean salad and fried eggplant) to start. Eggplant in particular was delicious. Then shared the chargrilled vegan chicken. It was delicious, but when they say big share on the menu I think they mean big in price, or maybe bowl - portion size was the exact same as the small share plates. We ended up getting the kohlrabi salad as well as we were still a bit hungry.

We had a great experience here! From start to finish! Staff were really friendly and the service was quite fast. We went on a Thursday night and it wasn't too busy, perfect for a date night! I think though, the tables were a bit too close to each other, but apart from that, great! We got the set menu and everything was delicious, very filling but still could make room for that delicious tiramisu. A bit pricey but worth it!

I had a solo dinner at S+Ds sitting at the bar by the kitchen. It was perfection. The food was incredible, as was the cocktail, the service was welcoming and attentive but not overbearing, and I really enjoyed watching the talented chefs at work. I’ve just booked to come again next time I’m in Melbourne.

This was probably the best meal we have had at a restaurant. We had the set menu, it did not disappoint. Huge variety of flavours, my personal favourite was the oyster mushrooms. However I think the best on the menu was the tiramisu. Absolutely amazing.

Amazing food for vegans and non-vegans alike! The staff are so knowledgeable and friendly and the service is quick. Each option we chose was delicious with high quality ingredients and cooked to perfection. While it’s hard to pick a favourite with everything so delicious the flatbread was a standout. The bread was so fluffy and the toppings really complimented each other. As a non-vegan I was excited to try the sausage ragu. The texture and seasoning of the pea protein was a perfect match for the sausage. With the smoked flavour of the tomatoes this dish was amazing! I will absolutely be back for more ! The changing menu makes things even more exciting ☺️

Amazing experience at the Chef's Table - Sean went above and beyond taking care of us. Every dish was fantastic, with so much variety in flavour and texture; the photos are only a small selection of everything we received. We left full, happy, and even with a couple ideas to take home for our own cooking (not that we could ever achieve the same level of flavourful mastery). Thank you for a great night! Hopefully we can return again soon, but in the meantime I'll be recommending it to many others.

I hadn't been to their new location and friends suggested checking this out. The plant-based menu with their signature mock meats are still designed for sharing, so we ordered with some help from the staff. We chose the smoked beets, calamari and potato and the focaccia bread for entree. The calamari bathed in a sauce that was rich with flavour, so using the bread to soak it up was definitely a good suggestion. For mains we had the Persian pork meatballs and marinated oyster mushrooms. Personally I didn't like the texture of the mushrooms, which were tough and rubbery, but loved the meatballs which were pretty close to real thing. The new place has a classier and more upmarket vibe than the previous location. While I prefer the approachability it used to have, staff are just as attentive and helpful here. Bookings are a must and time limits are strictly enforced at the popular place.

the lighting in this place is nothing short of criminal, straight down lights, the least flattering light in the world completely takes away from any kind of vibe or mood that is attempting to be made. I can’t express how much I think this is a jail worthy crime and I sincerely urge them to do something about this, I guarantee a major increase of quality of life for everyone who enters this building if they fix the lighting. However the wait staff could not be faulted, they were kind, friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming and the food was delicious! Such lighting I cannot forgive though it’s pure criminal and I will be calling the police

Vegan caviar was interesting. Amazing dishes all in all, I like to take my non vegan friend here. Also I need to hook the tirimisu into my veins, the portion size needs to be double. 10/10

I was visiting Melbourne and going to this place using public transport requires a five minute walk from the tram stop. The staff was very welcoming and the atmosphere is perfect for fine dining. The food was served quick and the staff took the time to describe the dish. The croquettes and hash brown are big servings and they were delicious. We had the Fusilli as the main dish and these are well cooked and very flavourful. Dining here is well worth the effort to go out of your way.

What a great dining experience. It’s been a while since my wife and I had been on a date and we were really looking forward to Smith and Daughters - and they didn’t disappoint. The food was incredible. Each dish was flavourful and exciting. The creativity was next-level and I didn’t miss meat for a second! The things you can do with vegetables - who’d have known! Service was on-point with every request we had being accommodated. The server was knowledgeable, courteous and the food came out at good intervals. Wine list is well-curated and there definitely enough for all wine types. It’s not a large list but it put together well. Feeling so good after 4 courses makes me want to go back everyday. The food is clean, well prepared and like I said, super inventive. Definitely worth checking out, even if you’re not vegan. In the end I was enjoying the food so much I didn’t take pics of the main - sorry about that. Highlights were the gluten free, wood-oven focaccia and the dairy tiramisu. I bet anyone they can’t tell the difference for either dish if compared with the glutinous or dairy counterpart. Thanks Smith and Daughters. Great night!

One of the best meals I’ve ever had. Did the $95 set menu and every dish was absolutely exquisite. The croquettes, the pasta and tiramisu in particular. 🤤 my non-veggie partner also was blown away. Finished off with a birthday cake as it was for an occasion. Most beautiful and delicious cakes. 🎂 Service was also spectacular, all the staff were super friendly and there was no rushing played away. Cannot wait to go back!

Definitely recommend going for a set course, we had 3 courses and everything was incredible. Every dish was immaculate. By far the best restaurant I have ever been to. The cocktails were amazing encapsulating every flavour profile. All of the staff were so lovely and our main waitress was phenomenal. Can't wait to go back.

This was an absolutely wonderful experience. We had a waitress who was quite new but she was full of personality and very helpful! The food was absolutely amazing and I can't wait to go back again. Highly recommend both pasta dishes and the flatbread dish, was so much more than described! Thanks so much for the amazing experience.

Gorgeous venue that is often booked well in advance. Had two pasta dishes come out together, one tasted like it'd just been plated, and the other like it'd been sitting for a while. I love what they're doing for the vegan movement and hope to try more of their menu.

Smith & Daughters is worth a trip to Melbourne from Seattle WA, USA. Full disclosure: Mo Wyse is my daughter. She has always been a force. Smith & Daughters is borne out of that dynamic. From a not Vegan family, she had the courage to devote her life to the rights of all animals. Smith & Daughters is an important step on the road to opening all our eyes. Shannon Martinez and Mo Wyse have created a place where Vegans can dine with those who have not made that choice and love their experience. Having only seen the food in pictures and read the reviews, my expectations were high. The experience exceeded my expectations. The Smith & Daughters team glows and can't do enough to ensure your experience is the best. Each entree was world class in flavor, texture and presentation. While my choice is "eat dessert first," the desserts were so wonderful, I had plenty of room left for them. Check out the pix I took. You are very lucky if you live in Melbourne. If you don't live there, don't leave Melbourne without at least one meal on your visit.

A beautifully restaurant with thoughtful design in every aspect. The food always exceeds my expectations and is definitely witch craft, it’s too good! The staff are always friendly, warm and knowledgeable. The only downside is that you will feel sad leaving when your experience is over. Would highly recommend for people who eat vegan and otherwise.

This is an excellent choice for vegans (and not vegans too)! The ambiance is nice, with its Melbourne style. Take a look to the decoration. It may be crowded, reservation is recommended. Staff is always very friendly. It is not expensive, at least no more than other places for brunch. Pay by cash to avoid a small fee. I've been there only for the brunch. Menu for the evening is different. I highly recommend the meatballs (sandwich) and the potato edges (side), just delicious!

Prepare yourself for mouth watering, nourishing food served by people who actually enjoy working at this restaurant! We had an absolutely incredible 7 course degustation plus desert dinner at Smith & Daughters which I would place in the top 3 dining experiences I've ever had. The fact that what they serve here is plant-based is a bonus but there is no doubt that anyone will greatly enjoy their time here, no matter what main diet they follow.

Came for my mother’s birthday, unfortunately the service let us down. Staff were abrupt and seemed like they didn’t want to be there. Even asking for water was a hassle :(. Food was okay. Some dishes great, some quite average.

Wowwwww that was the best vegan food I have ever had! Splendid staff and cannot recommend this place anymore. We had the 'Feast Me' and the staff were very detailed and asked if we minder a bit of spice or salty food to gather our tastes and/or allergies. The meals were delicious and very filling. We will definitely be back and recommend it to all our friends.

We went on Wednesday for Al la carte style dine in. I’m not sure if the set menu would be worth it tbh, but the al la carte definitely was! We got one of each dish and shared it amongst 5 people. It came around to be $50 per person, which is a lot more reasonable than $95 per person. Food was extremely rich in flavour. The charcoal chicken was definitely the winner winner chicken dinner. Portion sizes were a bit on the small size like the chicken, but good to share I guess. Service was great!

Absolutely exemplary Italian inspired vegan cuisine featured in a trendy, aesthetically pleasing setting that is impossible to fault. This food will inspire those who aren’t vegan or are cynical about plant based meals and offers a reaffirming experience for those who are vegan! Rich, creamy, truly decadent and beautifully presented food. I left feeling full and satisfied! World class meals that will influence the vegan movement. While the prices are slightly steep they reflect the location of the restaurant and once you taste the meals you truly won’t be phased. Some have spoken about the slightly loud music played so if you’re after a quiet, ‘low key’ experience perhaps look elsewhere. However for a solo traveler like myself it was edgy, fun and not bothersome at all. If you’re considering visiting just do it! Loved the merchandise and will definitely be raving about the place and returning. Simply awesome!

We had a fantastic night at Smith and Daughters. Excellent food and service. The staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. Delicious vegan food. We ordered 3 small plates and 2 large and it was more than enough food. The highlight was probably the arancini balls and we were pleasantly surprised by the chicken. The staff were incredibly friendly, great service. Would definitely come back

Service and food was excellent. You won’t be disappointed no matter what you order from the menu. Only two minor downsides 1) the tables are pretty close to each other, so it feels like you have extra company! 2) I visited during the late afternoon and the restaurant was not fully dressed (boxes and staff jackets etc lying around).

My partner and I lost our minds at the new Smith and Daughters - the food was just absolutely delicious and I am still dreaming about it. Counting down the days until we go back. The team at S&D were also highly accommodating to a peculiar allergy and amended the menu for us with no fuss. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone!

Wow... This is the second time I've had their set menu and this one was crazy good. Highly recommended! I'm not even vegetarian. Great value with the drinks added too. You get a heap of food. Best hummus Ive ever had... And I live in Coburg. There was only really one weak dish for me but that's just because everything else was such high quality. Drink pairings were well thought out and they accounted for our dislike for dessert wine. Jess behind the bar is a legend!

  • 5/5 Mahala F. 2 years ago on Google
Their new restaurant is stunning. I love the open kitchen and the option to sit at the bar and watch the chefs in action. The Set Menu is a whole experience in itself. I am not vegan and I could have sworn the blue oyster mushroom was actually chicken thigh! Food is unreal. Highly recommend for anyone and not solely vegans.

  • 5/5 Christina M. 2 years ago on Google
We had the set menu, it was delicious and we left feeling very full. Stand outs were the tiramisu, homemade bread and bean salad. The only downside would be the service was a bit slow and the kitchen got smokey so I wouldn’t sit at the bar. But overall a great dining experience, would recommend for celebrating a special occasion.

Reliably delicious and special in so many ways. Honestly please just try this place out, every time we've come we didn't expect it could get better and it has. From sitting down to the last dish you're bombarded with more food than should be possible at this price point. And with each different dish you try you'll find yourself surprised with the variety on offer. If anything I recommend pacing yourself until the pasta dish on offer arrives, those are usually the standouts, next to any of their smoked/chared vegetable dishes. Oh and then come the deserts, which have always been amazing. Have come here a few times and will come back many more.

Visiting vegan from NZ. I follow you guys on Instagram and wanted to visit for a while. I’m so grateful for the entire experience. I visited with my sister who isn’t vegan and she was blown away with the food. Had dinner with my partner on the first night of Smith & Daughters being open after the ease of restrictions! The level of friendliness and service is beyond comparison. We had The ONE and ONLY Shannon Martinez host the night and make us feel so comfortable at the venue. The staff had such a quality of professionalism mixed with relaxed friendliness; Our waitress was beyond compensating and so so friendly. That dropped our guard and made us feel at home instantly. The food was out of this world! The menu was so detailed and full of wild and unique flavour combinations that left us bedazzled! Vegan food at its best. The desserts were spectacular; accompanied with a perfect dessert drink pairing I have never experienced in my life. Jess the mixologist had my taste buds in absolute awe. We could not express our gratitude even more. Thank you Smith & Daughters for elevating Vegan food to a fine dinning experience and changing the worlds perspectives on food. One plate at a time! Ps Jerusalem artichokes blew my mind!

Great atmosphere in busy Brunswick St, it is up the city end and not in the real busy part so a bit easier to find parking. Plenty of variety in the dishes to choose from and a good range of drinks including cocktails and many beers. The wine list is reasonable in price compared to some other restaurants. The service was good and waiting staff were first class. Would certainly go back there and recommend for those that have not tried vegetarian food.

The ragu was so realistic and hearty, and the meatballs were perfect although the portion was too small for most people (keeping in mind they portion according to how rich a dish is). Both dishes cost $25 which isn’t the cheapest but for a nice meal out and for the sheer flavour and perfectly curated dishes I would say it’s well worth the price and we felt perfectly satisfied after finishing our meals. Staff were lovely and very helpful. Would recommend booking as it can fill up quickly especially on Friday/weekends. Absolutely recommend to everyone- vegan or not this is a fantastic restaurant. Will be back as soon as possible.

Unique vegan place- coffee was delicious but service was quite average. When we arrived, the server looked unimpressed and wasn’t very helpful. Came with my partner and even though there were lots of available tables for 2 people, the server said she could only place us at the end of one of the big tables, alongside another group. Place wasn’t even busy at the time we arrived and still wasn’t when we left; so was confused about the choice in table placement. Had the breakfast pizza and the basil pesto and roasted vegetable frittata. Breakfast pizza was tasty, frittata was ok. If you want a vegan experience with unique decor, then you’ll like this place.

Really delicious food! I was completely mind blown over the fact that everything was plant based. The best vegan food I’ve ever had. Only downside is that this is a popular spot and it is quite busy, so service was a bit slow and it was hard to get the waiters attention. But would still recommend this place!

Usually not a vegan eater but this food has blown my mind! Absolutely killer flavours that are paired so well with each other. Highly recommend ordering a few dishes to share. Highlights were the mutton ragu and the charcoal chicken.

Very delicious vegan fare. Roast chicken was standout. As was the Turkish mince with hummus. We had the mother's day set menu.

Just astounding. My tastebuds were transported. How do they make vegan prosciutto? It must be magic. Lovely serving staff and short wait for food.

This is hands down the best restaurant I've ever been to, the food alone is incredible but the service really took the experience to the next level, we picked the 'feast me' option which was awesome because we were able to sample so much of the menu, and it's very good value for money, we went in starving and came out very well fed with some to take home, I can't recommend this place enough, thank you Smith & Daughters, whenever we are in Melbourne we will be coming back to see you!

Not vegan, but this place was fireeeee. Would recommend making a reservation before coming down. Roadside parking was easier to find in the late evening. Overall amazing experience.

Great place! Incredible vegan food and that’s coming from a meat lover! We really loved the customer service, there was such a positive vibe. We left feeling happy and full. What a joyful experience. We highly recommend the ‘feast me’ option.

Ambience is great but food is somehow not what I expected. It's vegan but not healthy though.

Small menu, almost no options without soy. Food was not good enough, too salty and not worth the price. Sorry but I expect for more.

High end venue with delicious high end food that the owners have done very well to create. However, it’s let down by certain moody staff that forget it’s not their restaurant, if they don’t want to be there go home and make your own vegan food in silence.

Creativity, flavour and atmosphere. Smith & Daughters literally blew my mind. All of our meals were gluten free and completely loaded with sesnational textures and flavours!

Never eaten a vegan menu before, so this was a challenge... all of the dishes were not only good, but exceptional! Very good service too! Would recommend even to my meat loving friends!
