I cycle around this park regularly. The lake isn't pink at the moment, if that's what you're looking for. El Nino is just starting and the water level is dropping so maybe it will be pink again in the next 18 months. The park isn't usually busy, it's nice for wildlife, but please be aware that there's a fair few snakes. I've seen a huge tiger snake near the old train tracks, by the ponds that are choc a bloc with frogs. I jumped off my bike and it was two feet from me, I never saw it and it was extremely well camouflaged. It was full and slow, very placid. It was a lucky day for me. The bridge over the lake provides some stunning views, especially with the reflections when it's calm. I enjoy cycling around this whole area of Port Melbourne. The park, the lake, around to the beach or the river. The salt water and fresh water lakes have an abundance of birds. It's a really nice area, even though there's a bit of traffic noise from the bridge. Enjoy it before it gets developed down there.

Westgate Park is an exceptional park located in the industrial heart of Port Melbourne. It offers a range of attractions and activities that make it an ideal destination for visitors seeking a green oasis close to the city. The park's location on the eastern banks of the Yarra River, under the Westgate Bridge, offers spectacular views of the river mouth and the city skyline. One of the most remarkable features of Westgate Park is its salt lake, which turns pink seasonally due to high salt levels, high temperatures, increased sunlight, and lack of rainfall. The reddish algae growing in the salt crust is a sight to behold, particularly during hotter weather. The park's shared paths are popular with cyclists, joggers, and walkers, and connect to some significant trail networks of Melbourne, including the 53km Bay Trail. Visitors can take the unsealed trails that wind past lakes and wetlands to see the park's plants and animals, as well as the Earth Series Sculptures. These artworks by Lyn Moore are made from natural materials and add to the unique landscape and character of Westgate Park. The park also offers a free shared electric barbecue facility, making it an ideal spot for picnics and gatherings. Westgate Park is home to a variety of bird species from around the world, and the lake is a great place to observe wading birds such as stilts, ibis, and spoonbills feeding on the shores. The park is part of an Aboriginal cultural landscape in the traditional Country of the Bunurong People, adding to its historical and cultural significance. Overall, Westgate Park is a wonderful destination for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Its unique features and attractions, coupled with its proximity to the city, make it a must-visit spot for anyone looking to explore Melbourne's natural beauty.

We were here back in April 2019. It was a fine day; the lake was beautiful, a deep pink. It wasn't busy, there weren't many people, but we still had to park on the main street. I strongly encourage all Melbournians to pay this park a visit, at least once. Remember, many visitors travelled hours just to catch a glimpse of this unusual lake. It's nice to explore what our own city has to offer. Highly recommended. I believe you can call the park to ask if the lake is pink before heading over.

We went there expecting pink lake, but sure there is a lake but it's not like pictures seen online. There was a note at the edge of the lake that mentioned that the lake was last Pink, around 2019 May. It's not worthwhile if you are driving from far like we did, expecting to see something spectacular as shown in pictures online.

Cool park that remains a bit wild with a variety of small and quirky monuments. The phenomenon of the pink lake happens when it is very hot, with sunny days without rain. The salt lake turns pink because of the natural interaction of a green alga, in response to a very high salt levels, temperature and light. This alga grows in the salt crust at the bottom of the lake and produces a red pigment (Beta-carotene). The colour intensifies as the water evaporates in summer heat and salt content increases. Very rare phenomenon!

A fairly large park and well maintained. You can get here by car, bike or walk. It has a few places you can sit and relax, it also has a lot of different trails to go down and explore. Pretty nice retreat from the nearby metropolis next door.

Interesting park located right next to Westgate Bridge with 2 lakes. One salt water that sometimes turns a spectacular bright pink in late summer, and an adjacent Freshwater lake. Both are located very close to the Yarra River near where it enters Port Philip Bay. A small carpark, lots of walking trails, a BBQ area with picnic tables and toilets. There are spectacular views of Westgate Bridge, and from some parts of the park, views of the nearby cities skyscrapers. Lots of Birdlife. A very pleasant place to spend a few hours on a sunny day.

What a beautiful place! Loved every bit of it. My husband took me there as a surprise and couldn't have been more amazed. It was hauntingly beautiful. The greenery, the water, the sheer vastness of the park. Loved the greens and blues! We visited it on a sunny day so it added to the overall experience. It's very quiet and peaceful.

This is a very mixed review, I have regularly gone here since COVID. It has always been nice and peaceful and it’s a great spot if you’re into your wildlife photography. But I went there this weekend (18th Nov) and I can say after what I witnessed there I will never be going back! If you have small children or you’re not a fan of people having relations in public on a footpath then stay well clear! I’m not sure if this is a known thing but it’s disgusting to witness at 6pm on a Saturday afternoon in broad day light !

You could be in the middle of nowhere in the Australian bushland here - beautiful natural setting with grassy tracks that all of a sudden open out to view the busy Westgate Bridge - an amazing sight with the wetlands in the foreground. I’m so proud that Melbourne has these diverse places preserved for everyone to enjoy.

The lake is no longer pink as of late 2019/ 2020. They don’t know when it will be pink again. It’s a pleasurable walk around. Some beautiful unusual little birds in the trees. A short walk so to speak from Port Melbourne. Good Cycling track near by.

Had been to the park with the excitement of spotting Pink. But the lake stopped turning Pink in May 2019. Nevertheless, this is a serene lake. No noise or crowd. You could sit there by the lake and enjoy a meal and chat with a friend. Or grab a book and sip coffee along. Easy to reach as well. Right across the Westgate Bridge. You wouldn't expect such a quiet place in the midst of the bustling city centre. Must visit!

Possibly my favourite park in Melbs. The pink lake is well known the biking and walking trails around this surprisingly large park are the real secret. Packed full of birds, this rejuvenated brown fields area is highly recommended for a bit of urban hiking in the shadow of the Westgate bridge.

The lake in Westgate Park has the pinkest color in Australia. The bottom of the water grow ed many microalgae that produced red pigments in a high salinity environment and presence of high temperatures causing the entire lake to turn pink. During summer time, increased sunlight and insufficient precipitation makes the lake so deep in pink even turn to rose-red The environment of the park need more protection, many rabbish left behind by visitors; however this pink lake is the easiest to reach for people live around Melbourne.

Westgate Park. Tucked right under the Westgate Bridge many Melbournians know where it is but very few visit. It has been maintained and developed over the years by both Parks Victoria and Westgate Biodiversity (friends of). The plantings are all native and provide both a nice place to stroll and relax but also to enjoy Australian natives. The park, which forms the western boundary to the new Fishermans Bend development, will take on more importance as Australia's largest urban development takes shape. Well worth a visit.

Went there multiple times expecting to see pink lake, but never saw the pink… there is a lake and a nice place to walk but surprisingly was dirty at multiple places on one of the days I visited… we drove an hour just to see pink lake and didn’t it, thus was a disappointment

I’ve always enjoyed walking the circuit of the park but it’s becoming all too frequent these days to find myself crossing paths with massive tiger snakes. You don’t see them until your right next to them and today I had to leap like a Gisèle over one and then bolt the hell out of there. I wouldn’t be walking on the grass nor would I let a dog run around there, it’s only time until someone is bitten, im surprised it hasn’t happened yet. Stay aware at all times.

Scenic views of Salt Water Lake with Westgate Bridge as a backdrop. Benches and grass to sit on, sealed track to walk or ride on but lots of debris so no good for skates. Dogs must be on lead due to wildlife in area.

Beautiful and pleasing to the eyes, but gosh it smells so bad. Not a spot for picnic due to the smells, it would be nice if the park had some shaded huts or something similar for people to chill and enjoy nature's beauty.
