Craving for something different while in lockdown, I chose this Japanese restaurant. If visiting their restaurant, they are found in King St and are open M-F for lunch and dinner sittings. They are closed on Sundays but open on Saturdays for dinner. They have been a stalwart in Melbourne since 1989 and have a variety of menu options including vegetarian and gluten-free. Recommendations: Gyoza - six pieces of pork fried meat dumplings - perfectly cooked accompanied by a dipping sauce and small salad. Hana Sakura - Sashimi, sushi roll, teriyaki chicken and miso soup - kind of a bento box with mixed items - [Also had packets of wasabi and soy sauce]. All up - great tasting food at a reasonable price point, especially for home delivery. Give them a try.

Excellent food and service. You get what you pay for. We had a good selection of their menu and everyone was very happy with their meal. Would definitely go back.

We visited again for their Valentine's day set menu. Lovely presentation, great taste and good service. Price is on expensive side but it's worth it.

ALERT: Don’t go to hanabishi! We have been there and ordered delivery for 10+ times! We got fish not fresh this time for delivery and the restaurant basically think we r lying! (See the photos for details!) Really disappointed! Always loved Hanabishi and a to go place before! 😩

The first dish hasn't even arrived and I'll give it a 4 star. It's the atmosphere, the setting, a complementary braised meatball as starter. I'll definitely edit with more comments. Edit: it's now over. We ordered a regular size sashimi and sushi platter, AUD43, it's probably not the freshest I've eaten but it's good. Totally worth the money. A teriyaki chicken, AUD23, excellent. A soba with tempura, also very good - the portion of soba filled me up well. Upgraded to 5 stars.

Delicious traditional japanese food. The absolute highlight is the salt kiln barramundi (traditional japanese dish that most people have no idea about!!!)

This is definitely a place worth trying! The staff are so warm and super friendly - they really go out of their way to make you comfortable. The Sushi and Sashimi Platter is definitely the way to go as you can taste so many different things and it’s still really affordable. The servings sizes are quite big so make sure to have an appetite when coming! The whole ambience of this place is great for dinner with some friends or even your work mates. Overall, 10/10 and I would most certainly recommend!

Hanabishi serves authentic Japanese dishes, always with good quality and friendly service. The lunch boxes (shushi, sashimi , tempura) are very good value, strongly recommended. Their dinner menu is even more interesting. We’ve been here many times and surprised to find out that they’ll be closing end of the year. So better get in your reservation and get a good taste of one of the better Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. We’re going to miss Hanabishi, hope they’ll come back again in the near future with Hanabishi 2.0!

One of the best Japanese restaurants I've been to especially the quality of the food which is actually worth the slightly higher price tag. Imo the only thing holding this restaurant back is the fit-out which could be a lot better.

This is probably one of the most authentic Japanese food experience you can find in Melbourne. Sadly they are closing down at the end of 2021. So if you can, go and give it a try before they are closing down for good.

We dined upstairs and it felt like 1:1 service. Brilliant. Tuna sashimi, teriyaki chicken and oysters to name a few. Delicious. Quiet gem away from the rain and noise outside.
