I have been going here for 9 years. Today they served me tepid coffee in a dirty mug and overcooked scrambled eggs with bread inexplicably cut lengthwise into two 20x4cm strips. This is far from my first audaciously bad experience here, on previous occasions I've been given a takeaway paper bag full of relish, and minestrone that tasted like vomit. BUT despite all this I, like all of Brunswick, absolutely adore this place and would defend it with my LIFE. The chokehold this institution has on the inner north is insane and must be experienced to be believed. Anyway just order the pastries and salads.

Review based on dine in experience. I would say off the bat as a take away baked good option - would give 4 or 5 stars. Great variety and awesome option for a quick on the go bite. Dine in brunch was okay. Strong positive is the price point, probably the cheapest cafe you will find in the area - $17 for a big brekky which is incredible value for money. The dish itself whilst having plenty of variety wasn't overly strong. Felt like a homemade option which is great if it's what you're after. If you're after fresh modern cafe flavours, it might miss the mark. I struggled with the dine in a touch as the venue is incredibly drafty and it feels like you're sitting in a hallway wherever you go. The cafe seems to be big on catering so the venue is set up for this purpose. When you dine in you are surrounded by shelves of dishes and plates, and unfortunately things look more shabby than chic. Not an optimal dining experience and a little dark and dusty. I'll keep it in the rotation and might just opt for a takeaway treat next time. Maybe even catering!

A big favourite of mine in Brunswick. This is one of the last places you can go to for brunch and not have to sell your left kidney to pay for your meal. There are SO MANY AMAZING cakes to choose from, and and array of wonderful quick home made foods you can eat in or take away. The dine in menu feels like home with everything from porridge and pancakes to burgers and eggs. They’ve always had take home food, but recently they’ve expanded the range to plenty of salads, soups and meals. Love it.

Coming here for the cake mostly, orange cake and cheese cake ♡ generous slice for $5.5 and great taste!!! Also great pies with crispy flakey skin and flavourful meat inside so good! 👎Place is packed during peak hour of course and there's not much space for more staff taking order so it's slow moving on the queue

A super busy and cheap cafe with great costing cakes!! Really is as cheap as it sounds with huge ‘slices’ (slabs) of cake for only $5 - I can strongly recommend the carrot cake! Also do a range of juices and iced coffees in their fridge in takeaway bottles, as well as a selection of salads and sandwiches in their display counter. A great spot for takeaway, but have to time it right to find space to eat in as is always packed!! A very cute outdoor courtyard bit out the back as well.

Wow what a bargain! Can't believe the value of this place. Just popped in on a whim after some op shopping up the road. Ordered a coffee, Turkey roll and large cookie and it came to $14.80! What the? That's amazing! Turkey roll was ok but would try something different next time. Coffee was delicious and service friendly and prompt. Cool vibe overall too.

A gem of Sydney Road. Gets busy and hard to find a seat at times so I prefer to take away but the courtyard is nice. Prices are great and there’s heaps of variety and veg options. Not everything is a hit but the things that are (like the veg and haloumi pie) are standout.

I had no problems ordering my gf and egg-free birthday cake online and also spoke with someone friendly and helpful on the phone before pick-up date.. I was due to pick it up at 11.30 on Saturday morning. I get there at around 11.45 and am told, after she'd checked, by a not-very-friendly member of staff that they 'were working on it now' and she didn't know how long it would be. Had it not been so crazy busy in the teeny, tiny café, I'd have asked her to find out for me how long. I went back after about 10 minutes, after having seen a few people walk out with their cake boxes, to be told by the same friendly(!) person that no, they haven't brought it out so no, it's not ready yet. Great. Sorry for wasting your time then eh!? I must have come across as a little annoyed when I went in for the third time, and this was after over half an hour's wait. A (different) member of staff went to check and came back with a box and handed it over to me. No apology. No confirmation of the type of cake, no opening the box to show me and no ticket on box. Hmm. Cannot fault the cake on taste. It was incredibly rich and tasted great for a gf and egg free cake. All enjoyed it. However, I am not sure I'd be back, purely based on the customer service. I've never been here before but it is clearly a very popular place and has great reviews so it must be doing something right!

Wide variety of delicious salads, lasagna, sandwiches, savory muffins, variety of cakes. The place has style and personality. Everything looks fresh, and it’s always quite busy. You have to pay at the counter and then food is brought you after at the table. Good vibes. Option to dine in or you’ll see a fridge with quite good variety of pre packed food to take away. The coffee was good, but not outstanding. I asked for a matcha latte but they don’t have it in the menu, only coffee. The staff members are nice and friendly enough. The food was brought to the table quickly, but I observed it was a bit desorganizad the cleaning of the tables o getting them ready for new customers. The prices are fair, not too cheap neither excessive. Generous portions. Recommendation: supply toiletries in the toilets ( they were run out of the basics: toilet paper and soap). It would be nice to organize better the cleaning of the tables to improve the rotation of customers, mostly on peak hours. It would be nice to put a little cushion on some of the chairs outside, otherwise the metal get stuck into your legs. Many thanks.

I ordered the vegan salad (I am vegan/ lactose intolerant) after eating most of the salad thinking the cheese in it was vegan my stomach became very painful so I called and asked if they had put vegan feta in the salads that day. They confirmed that they did not have vegan feta but they have normal feta which was in the vegetarian salad… When I went in store the staff didn’t even apologise or event pretend atleast to care.. I’m a chef and we never make mistakes like this, how does this happen?

Fantastic bakery and cafe. So many freshly baked and delicious looking pies, pastries and cakes. Also a great breakfast and lunch menu. I had the ricotta veggie sausage roll and the veggie burrito. Also had a coffee. Everything was really enjoyable, generous and tasty. Very happy to have given this place a try.

Excellent food, lots of options and very reasonably priced. We catered a small party and everyone loved the food. Plus we were glad to see that they take back the trays.

Awesome breakfast with many vegan and vegetarian options. Nice outdoor seating for small groups only. A beautiful cosy romantic place for an early morning breakfast for a couple. Coffee was amazing and so was the concept of baked egg.

I've been coming here for over 12 years. The coffee, the food, the cakes, the pies... The scrambled eggs and salmon is still $14, and is presented identically to when I first bought it years ago. I don't know how they do it, how they maintain this incredible consistency over such a long period, in a city which is all about what is new. In a crazy changing world, this place feels like an anchor - familiar, safe, reliable. I love it here, the staff, the customers. Sit and have coffee here and you will see people from all walks of life. Green is Brunswick. Thank you and don't ever change!

Fantastic home-made-style range of pastries and sweets, plus unusually lovely service from the young, hip staff. Whoever makes the cheesecakes deserves some sort of medal - I didn't think I like baked cheesecake until I came here. That, plus Melbourne's best sausage roll (I don't know why it's here, but it has to be somewhere.)

Terrible food, eggs overcooked, white muffins, looked like it was from a bad motel - felt sick in the afternoon. They heated up my friends salmon bagel, also bizarre. Better food elsewhere in Brunswick.

It's the best cafe where you can taste drinks and cakes at a low price! The staff are really nice and I love the system they bring when they're seated! The turnover rate was fast, so it was good to eat inside the store :) Thank u so much 😁

It’s crazy in here on the weekend - so good luck finding a seat but the food is delish! Great pressed juices in little glass bottles to take away. $5 salads, cakes 🤤, super affordable and super tasty! Sweet potato and spinach frittata today was *chefs kiss*

really cozy cafe with great variety of baked goods. We got the lemon slice which was light and yummy, and the hot chocolate was not too thick but very milky! Enjoyed our time here very much

If you’re after a cafe that screams ‘Brunswick’ this is it! You’d easily walk past it but make sure you stop by! We grabbed a coffee (delicious) and a sausage roll and some eggs Benny. Generous portions. Great prices. This was a great start to a great trip. Would recommend to anyone after breakfast or coffee in the area!

First time visit and I will be back for sure. So much delicious looking food. Eggs on toast with added veggies was delicious. Take away quiche, pastry triangles, pies, banana bread, all yummy. Cakes look delicious, will try them next. I thought the prices were very reasonable.

Easily one of the best cafes in Melbourne, it's like these guys never went through inflation, have some of the best pies and sausage rolls, cheap breakfast literally half the price of any fancy pants cafe. Everything is home-made and fresh. Couldn't recommend this place more

Popped in here for brunch on a Monday morning. Great atmosphere, decor and selection of counter foods and treats. If you’ve never been before there’s a bit of a learning curve in terms of what to do - we assumed it’s a “Find a table & seat yourself” service, which we ended up doing. The menus are also only behind the counter on chalk boards, so it’s a matter of going up to order and deciding quickly in the queue. Once you get those basics though you’re good to go. Didn’t take long for the food to arrive and it was all delicious. The eggs Benedict from here had been on my list to try for a while and it didn’t disappoint!

It's a cute small café but the food and pastries are great. The variety of choice is overwhelming though so be prepared to want to try everything. It also gets very busy on Sunday after 11am, the line is unbelievable.

Really delicious selection but some stuff is definitely better than others. I got the quiche Lorraine (which is unbelievably amazing) but got the chickpea chorizo pouch which was really not great. Coffee is always good. Only deducted one star because the menu and how to order can get so confusing. I reckon they should streamline it to the best items. Also worth mentioning that the price is unbeatable!! Very friendly for a uni budget or any budget really

A cute little hidden gem in the heart of Sydney rd Brunswick its always an hive of activity great food incredible atmosphere wonderful staff and amazing food selection at reasonable prices the space could be a little bigger but that is a minor hinderence for an fantastic cafe experience totally recommend a visit if ur in the area

I've had takeaway a couple if times, but dined in today for the first time. I wasn't sure if we could select something from the cases at front and eat in, but it was totally fine to do so, and it's such a pretty little outdoor space with cacti aplenty. My quinoa and veggie salad was tasty and my partner's sausage roll came with a delicious smokey chutney. Pretty reasonable prices too! I see why this is a Sydney Road institution.

One of the most consistently high quality cafes in Melbourne. Prices are fantastic, service is friendly, they cater to a mind-bogglingly high range of dietary requirements, and the food and drinks are delicious. Can't fault this place and have loved coming here for years

My best friend and I always end up there for a place to chat and some cakes+coffee and juices even though how full I am at that time. I still have some space to take up some cake from this place! 😆🤣😊❤️

Attracted by the long waiting line outside, I ordered a spinach and feta triangle, a slice of 3-layered chocolate cheesecake, and a berry smoothie. Initially, I felt fortunate to secure a table for dine-in, but it turned out to be a bit dissatisfying. I waited nearly 15 minutes for the triangle and cheesecake, which I thought wouldn't take that long since they were displayed in a conditioned place. The berry smoothie was acceptable. The service, however, was somewhat slow. Until I had finished my entire order, the dirty plates from customers before me had not been cleared, a situation I observed on many tables, not just mine. On a positive note, the cashiers were nice and quick.
