Second major station in Melbourne's CBD and the main hub for Regional Services. The station lacks decent ventilation - there can be awful diesel fumes on still days. Stores on both the upper concourse and lower concourse - mainly food stores but there is also a pharmacy, newsagents and phone store. The food is your basic fast food options. The toilets here are horrible. There are none available on the upper concourse where all Metro services depart. This is a huge design flaw. The two lots of toilets on the lower concourse (outside the main VLine gates near platforms 3/4) and the ones on the way to the Coach Terminal (below the Bourke Street Bridge) are disgustingly smelly and dirty. Not a good advertisement for visitors to the city. The lack of bins on the Platforms mean that there is often a lot of rubbish dumped on the seats and platforms. Navigating the station is also difficult. The lifts on to the platforms are small and slow. They also seem to break down a lot. Whilst the Metro platforms have escalators from both ends, the access to Platforms 1-8 has been completely neglected. One Escalator and then a long trek down to the main concourse. The whole station lacks any character and is sterile and unattractive. No greenery and very few comforts. It is either cold and dark or stinking hot - and still drab and dark. There is a PTV Hub and Travellers Aid available.

Hey Google, this isn’t Southern Cross Station. Remove this as it causes confusion; Southern Cross Station is where Google has “Southern Cross Underground Station”, on Spencer St. Cheers.

We visited this very large train station in Melbourne. The architecture is interesting and many trains arriving and departing. There are some food outlets at the station entrance.

OK let's face it you are only at Southern Cross because you are going somewhere else - not because you want to be. Southern Cross is the closest thing the CBD has to an underground coal mine (that's open to the public). Its dark, dirty and smelly. Why the State Government awarded this design I'll never know, particularly when you think of overseas train terminals, as busy as this, that are so light. But aside from the aesthetics, Southern Cross is conveniently located right next to Marvel Stadium for your concert and sporting events and to DFO for your shopping needs.

Second major train station in Melbourne's CBD. Regional vline and coaches start from here if you're going out of Melbourne. Regular metro services also go via Southern Cross Station. It has floating sails above the Metro train tracks, which gives it a very contemporary look. There are toilets located both on Bourke Street side and Collins street side if the station. There is a lot of very friendly V/Line staff. Several outlet shops, restaurants, and coffee shops are located upstairs at Spencer Outlet.

Southern Cross Station Visited on 7/9/2022 It is a very contemporary design station with floating sails over the Metro train tracks. The country train track is the far end and the interstate train tracks are close to the main entrance. When new the "saiks" look great, but they look a bit tired and dirty,

Awful situation for people with restricted mobility. If the lift doesn’t work how do you think people will take the train? Poor lady had an accident in the electrical stairs. Disappointing!

Can't really say much about the station itself other than caos ATM with changes to trains and buses making it an absolute nightmare..What a big city Melbourne is and they pride themselves on being a big deal in the city of Melbourne..The trains actually stop running for nearly 5 hours.. so don't drink, bring your car,no kids and plan ahead and save your money as you'll need accommodation for the night as you won't get home till the following day or like myself not knowing I had to stay at the casino in the gaming area till it was nearly time for the train's to run. Step up guys and clean the place up to.mit stink in there and if you want to promote better I'd listen

Southern Cross Station is a top hub with such beautiful design and more. It's one of the best stations I've ever seen and it's well sign posted to get around and more. Great staff too. They give you directions anywhere and very patient with my silly questions x

This place is dismal. I see they tried to inject some whimsical roof over the old and drab Spencer St Station, but forgot one basic thing, cleaning. The total lack of bins means rubbish is left on all manner of objects, oak milk cartons vying for fast food soft serve containers. If the operator of this train station invest a small percentage of revenue from the immense amount of advertising then maybe it could be a half decent transport hub. Sadly regional visitors and international travelers are greeted to Melbourne with sticky residue and a smell of diesel fumes.

Luv Southern Cross Station - being from our of town it puts you literally in a stones throw distance from anywhere in the city - if you have a V/Line ticket that means it ALSO covers you for Zone 1 & 2 - so you can get on a tram, bus or Metro to the suburbs etc and all over the city - its awesome, its cheap compared to driving your car - Seriously - why would you bother putting the keys into the ignition of your car when you can buy a daily pass for $10 ???? …. Let someone else drive … No Stress.. just relax and enjoy 😊

Country trains vline and coaches commuting runs starts from here if you're going out of Melbourne, local trains still connects here and connected to the famous marvel stadium we're all experiencing with diesel trains and electric seems ok I travel and connect trains from here up to six days a week no problem, if you like to wonder out of the station there's shops, cafes, food, bar and much more, public transport buses and trams connects right outside.

#SouthernCrossExperience 🚉 Recently visited the Southern Cross Station, and it was a fantastic experience. The architecture and design are impressive, creating a modern and vibrant atmosphere. Navigating through the station was seamless, and the facilities are top-notch. Southern Cross is not just a transit hub; it's a gateway to Melbourne's energy. The hustle and bustle of commuters and travelers contribute to the dynamic vibe. It's a melting pot of stories and journeys converging in one central location. Despite the transient nature, the station's diverse food options cater to various tastes. From quick bites to leisurely meals, there's something for everyone. The accessibility and convenience make it a hub not just for transportation but for a holistic urban experience. Proud to have explored Southern Cross – a pivotal part of Melbourne's charm. #SouthernCrossJourney #TransitAdventure #MelbourneVibes #CommuteInStyle

Absolutely my fave train and coach terminal. Has regional and metro trains and regional plus interstate coach terminals, plus easy access to trams, located right on the doorstep. Loves how shiney the new busses are, and the easy access to Coles, and 7/11 for cheap easy meals and coffee! Boasts various supermarkets including Coles and Woolies and a massive Spencer outlet centre upstairs. Has two hungry jacks and lots of other specialised cafes like Starbucks and a lord of the rings. Theirs heaps of dedicated areas for weary travellers to rest including lockers and a travellers aid, and lots of restrooms etc and a taxi ramp outside. Heaps better than flinders but thats my personal preference.

Sorry excuse for a train station with no bins around. Rubbish everywhere. Other stations are better, board elsewhere if you can. Why management removed bins is beyond me. And yes as of December 2023 and as per other reviews, this listing is still on the wrong location. The real Southern Cross station is right along Spencer Street.

It’s a wonderful station with a mix of regional fast trains, metros and coaches and being there on the peak hours gives a vibe of living in a metro city. Attending office in melbourne twice a week and this hub is a part of my office days. Love it.

Right at the heart of melbourne, in between the CBD and Docklands, lies this beautiful hub station. Inside the station there are wide platforms and access to all train lines as including the Vline towards areas outside of melbourne. Outside the station contains multiple bathrooms, food establishments and tram stops that will take you all over the city and beyond. Ive had the pleasure of being at this station during the day and even late at night, and whether im out for business or going for drinks the station has always been a sort of old reliable for its travellers overall 8/10 this station is 100% better than flinders, but probably not as iconic.

One of my favourite places. Incredible design and appealing to the eye. It’s central for all regional and metro trains and connects with a direct factory outlet. I do however have a few complaints, as it’s annoying that I have to touch off to access most of the shops and restaurants. Say I want to wait an hour for a changing train to another location and begin to feel hungry, it’s quite inconvenient that I have to leave the gates and touch off to access that

Literally the most disgusting train station in the southern hemisphere. The staff who work here should quit immediately, and proceed to sue over the damage done to their health from all the diesel fumes.

Deducting a star for super confusing signage. First platform 15A, then 15 B then some platform S. S for super confusing 😅 Other than that an awesome station with everything you can ask for. With super market, heaps of cafeteria, sugar station, an entire mall to the other side, places for breakfast to dinner and more than 3 tram stops on door step. Attaching pics for locker facilites.

This station is quite simply a health hazard. Just 10 minutes spent breathing in the noxious trapped diesel fumes caused me a headache. Outrageous that passengers and workers are still being subjected to this after 20 years. Also, changing platforms takes far too long due to the poor station design with no pedestrian subway. Avoid at all costs. Unfortunately you often have to go through here to get to and from the airport.

Poorly designed, mismanaged, it's like a gas chamber torturing you in diesel smoke while making your wait for trains arriving late or running around with last minute changes to schedule or lying to you that a train for a certain destination is leaving from a certain platform and you end up surprise when this train actually doesn't leave for approximately another half an hour.. time table is totally unreliable.. and easy for them to shift blames on each other between them and vline and metro.. The biggest lie they keep telling signal fault at some station which caused delay in the train.. PTV is doomed in all its services..

This station looked better on the blueprint. In practice it is dark, dirty and it smells... The intercity trains run on diesel fuel which means you periodically smell the fumes, which are trapped by the overhead roof. It may be a transport hub, but unlike Flinders street station it certainly is not a destination in itself. One simply gets off here and goes to their intended destination, because of how scummy the station is. I rate this station 2 1/2 stars out of 10 and the only reason I'm being so generous is because of its convenient location as it is close to marvel stadium, McDonald's,KFC, The Mail Exchange Hotel and many other places. The shops within the station itself are adequate. it isn't something that would take your breath away, but they get the job done when it comes to the bear essentials. If the options don't tickle your fancy, the Spencer Outlet Centre (formerly DFO) has a lot more shopping options and can easily be reached from the train station.

One of the best train stations of Melbourne! An improvement that can be made is to display the train information at the entrance of each platform. I had to ask one of the customer service people about which platform to go to.

This train station is always busy, day or night and probable the least amount of staff around to help , what I really don't understand how vline customer need to wait in the cold, while there is an empty train and will become the actual train towards the destination. Yet try to get in and you will be stormed with staff( I wonder where they hide) becuase they are not helping or proving direction .

It's one of Melbourne's inner city stations. Is what it is.. 🤷‍♀️ not really expert on reviewing stations. Not even a thing cos no one's interested....but is a great station to use if need to go someone and you are close to this station.... 😃😆

This is probably one of the worst train station / hub I ever visited. The lack of ventilation makes the air unbreathable especially when diesel trains are stationary for long time. In 2023 diesel train should use electric power in the city and switch to diesel outside heavily populated areas. This place is often too dark and feel unsafe after sunset, I never see any security personnel or police. Being in the heart of the city and don't feel safe is not a pleasant experience. The sky bus designated area does not have a waiting area, where elderly persons can sit while waiting for the bus. It is also very dark with the most polluted air being an underground car park with no ventilation. This station is fairly new but it's already obsolete for today's standards especially compared to European hubs.

Southern Cross railway station is a major railway station in Docklands, Melbourne. It has 22 platforms. The station is the terminus of the state's regional railway network operated by V/Line, The Overland rail service to Adelaide, and NSW TrainLink XPT services to Sydney. It is also served by metropolitan rail services operated by Metro Trains, and connects with Flinders Street station and the underground City Loop.

Always smells like diesel, there are no bins, and the subway's closed to pedestrians. It's not terrible, but most of Melbourne's train stations are better.

  • 1/5 Michael H. 6 months ago on Google
It's a train station, so not much to say about that, but the toilets are vile. One today had urine all over it, another had projectile fences sprayed all over the walls and some clogged. I know people can be disgusting, but this is just unacceptable.

Southern Cross is one of the best rail stations in Victoria. It has a large selection of shops inside the building, and many more a few hundred meters away. It has toilets (kind of nasty), Myki top up machines, a luggage hall, prayer room, vending machines, Very clear announcement's, staffed first to last train 7 days a week, nice diesel smell, friendly staff, 100% wheelchair accessible, tram, bus Metro and V/line services. Overall an amazing station, always worth visiting . If I could give 10 stars i would.
