Beautiful interior and vibes from this restaurant! Service was super friendly and went through the menu with us, giving us recommendations on food and drinks. Highly recommend the escargot! Was my first time trying snails and these were the highlight of my night! Soaked in that garlic butter paired with the sourdough - absolutely delicious! Meat was also cooked relatively well and accompanying sauces were flavourful.

I was so excited to come here but after spending $175 on 2 entrees, 2 mains and 2 drinks I am mortified. Not only was the meat chewy for the duck and the steak, it was inedible. I wasn't even able to eat the food that's how bad it was. This is top 3 biggest disappointments in any restaurant I've ever been to in Australia. If you're going to charge those prices, at least provide edible food. We selected a tuna entrees based on the waiter-read special - and did not know and was not $35. Nothing here tonight was worth the $$ spent, except probably for my large glass of red. The duck was blue, uncooked, and all-round inedible. And the steak was low quality and too chewy to consume - even after chewing the same piece for 2 minutes. Whilst the staff were polite, not only did they not ask me how the meal was at the end, but I was only asked if I wanted to tip. Safe to say I did not. Also we are in Australia not USA and spending more than enough as it is on below average food, so stopbuncomfortably asking people if they want to tip, if they really want to, they just will without prompt. And after all this, I had to go next door to get some actual food because we were still hungry.

Noisy, very dimly lit basement bar that also serves food. Would not go again for dinner as it is too dark to even read a menu, and the menu is very limited too. The snails were very disappointing compared to other French restaurants dined at recently and the salmon entree was tiny for the price. Overall quite expensive. Main meals came in entree-sized plates and chips portions were very little with the steak dishes. My duck dish had chips in a bowl on the side and I received substantially more. Staff friendly and knowledgeable, but would not return.

@barmargauxmelbourne 📍CBD ⭐️ MGX Burger ✔️ Cheeseburger ✔️ Scallops, Watermelon Bar Margaux is a late night, French brasserie located in Melbournes CBD. It is brought to you by the @madeintheshadegroup (@theeverleigh, @heartbreaker). 🍔 The basement venue’s interior is absolutely stunning, giving big Parisian and New York vibes featuring red leather booths and black and white tiles. The service is A+, they each introduce themselves formally, offer complimentary sparkling water and are very attentive. I think the portions of their entrees could be bigger (although we only had one we saw the neighbouring tables dishes). The Scallops were super refreshing! Both burgers were top, restaurant quality. The MGX had a delicious sauce and even though it had 2 patties, it wasn’t too much. If you go with the Cheeseburger Classic it also comes with a beer! 🍺 Bar Margaux is a well oiled machine, and although it looks so elegant it is very humble and welcoming. Dark and moody makes it perfect for a romantic date night! 🥰 ⭐️ 4.5/5 💸 $$

Total fail new years eve 2020/2021. Only half of what was on the menu turned up in our 6pm sitting before we were ushered out at short notice. Waiting staff did there best and were very friendly (thanks Sunny) but bar and kitchen not only not up to the task but just lacking. What did turn up was no better than a fairly ordinary French brasserie. At this price point don't waste your time - try Bistrot d'Orsay - much better service and infinitely better food.

Bar Margaux in Melbourne is a fantastic place to dine. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, and the service is impeccable. The menu is small but diverse and everything is delicious. The appetizers are particularly noteworthy and the selection of wine is impressive. I had the pleasure of trying the steak, which was cooked to perfection and the sauce that accompanied it was incredible. The desert was a perfect finish to the meal, the chocolate fondant was rich and decadent. Overall, the food and service were both outstanding, I would highly recommend Bar Margaux to anyone looking for a special dining experience in Melbourne.

One last dinner before another stage-4 lockdown. Photos taken on two separate occasions. Apology for the pixilated pics, didn't bring my DSLR. A wonder hidden basement bar/bistro with delicious french style cuisine and friendly staffs. We had a delightful dinner here. Great burger full of flavour, the duck was done to perfection and souffle was top notch. We also had a couple of very nice cocktails. Will venture here again once the lockdown is lifted... again 😅

Amazing vibe. This place is buzzing! The air con was on super high so we felt like our food went cold really quickly. We were a bit disappointed the snails/ escargot were not served in their shells. I had the steak frites which was perfectly done and very tasty. Price is on the high side. But you come for the atmosphere!

Went there last night with a heave rainy weather. While the environment and vibe was absolutely a different world with the outside. It seems like no one cares about the rain but their food and drinks. I sat at the bar with my friends but I was so wet and cold. We only had two drinks, otherwise I can have at least 3 rounds. They also have the petit cocktails and snacks. Make sure to book a table on advance and chill yourself here on weekends. I’ll leave one star for my next visit.

This was one of the first hidden bars I’ve ever visited. Was a bit difficult finding it, as the maps don’t suggest the right spot. It’s at the basement. I was delighted to see the ambience. The cocktails were absolutely stunning, loved them! It felt like fine dining but prices were very nominal for such place. The bartender was very friendly. Overall great experience!

Here for the NYE street feast. Spending 190 bucks on bad food and confusing service. If only 0 star is possible on Google. What a horrible experience. I’ll try to break this down in points. 1. We have a pandemic going on, the management stuffed guests together like sardines. A few guests requested to be seated inside as there was no social distancing at all on the tables. 2. The service staff who are working here for just this weren’t informed on the wine paring, there’s a whole course of wine that was skipped. 3. The oyster was warm and the duck was cold and rubbery, the salad had no taste whatsoever, a shame to the name of French cuisine. 4. Everyone is waiting forever for their food/drinks or even getting any water. Writing this while waiting for our desserts after the post-dessert wine was served 20mins ago. Shame on the greedy management/owners. Shame on the organisers. Shame. Update on 9pm: The staff just came over to “politely” tell us to leave because our sitting ends on 8:30pm. WHEN WE HAVENT BEEN SERVED OUR DESSERT YET.

What a great quaint find in Melbourne’s CBD! Look for a set of stairs heading down from Lonsdale Street and you’ll find it! The big doors open to beautiful lighting and welcoming staff! What a place! We ate snails and seafood for entree and shared salmon and steak for mains with a side of tasty beans! Delicious! Great beverage options available if you wish. The staff were attentive and lovely. The place was loud but not too loud (we had no issues asking the French waitress to repeat the special). I have to say the bathrooms are divine with warm hand towels instead of paper (it’s the small things). It had ambience and was a great French experience to dine if you haven’t yet!

Wow! Bar Margaux just got it all right ! 🍔Food is delectable, try the burgers for sure cause they are the best in town ! They are abit heavy so dont eat starters before it. 🍷🍸drinks are amazing, just go with the flow but the “Nightsong” is something else. 🧑‍🔧service are very professional, welcoming, and always happy to help. You guys are legendary ! 🚻🚻 i love their toilets 😄 those towels in the toilets to dry your hand are able to change you mood 💕 🎆🎆ambience is great suitable for group of friends or a casual date

Some of the best cocktails in Melbourne! The service here is amazing and the decor is amazing. The food is something I could take or leave, not bad but I wouldn’t come here just for the food. Even with this, it’s still 5 stars because of how truely amazing the cocktails are. The waitstaff and bartenders are also great, very helpful and friendly!

Salmon was awesome, great cook and very tender. Love it! And you can’t go wrong with the beers. Service is great, Spencer (the guy who took care of us) was very nice and helpful. I gave 4 stars for food only because the cocktail was way too sweet! But well, it’s a cocktail guys :-)

Found one of my favourite new bars! Very cool. The only thing that let the down with was the customer service of the staff members who refused to provide me with a menu and we little bit abrasive / arrogant 3/5 for customer service. Decor 5/5, drinks 4/5.

Beautiful looking restaurant, love the aesthetic and it was the right lighting / temperature and amount of noise. The staff were really lovely and seemed happy. Our waiter took the time to explain the concept of the restaurant and take us through all the dishes. I had the pea and garlic pasta and my partner had the steak, we were both really happy with our dishes and enjoyed the french wine. Would recommend.

Literally my fifth visit in 4 months; and I could still go again next weekend! Obsessed with every part of Bar Margeux; from the restaurant's identity, interiors, service, and of course the food! I'm always as excited for my next visit as the last because there's always a rotating special which feels considered and seasonal. Serving sizes are super generous, and the food is always a 10/10. So excited for my next visit already!

Had a lovely pre theatre dining experience here last night. Sat down at 5.30pm and by 7.10pm we were all done and we didn’t feel rushed at all. Food was excellent. The set menu offering is generous and as follows - Steak Tartare (we had escargot instead as my friend is not a fan of raw meat) Cônes de Ratatouille Cromesquis de Maïs et Poireaux Steak Frites Runner Beans Crème Brûlée Good value at $75pp however now that I am writing this review I realise we were never offered the included beverage this is part of the set menu! We enjoyed a bottle of Grenache that was divine (see picture). Service was impeccable and the food overall was just divine.

Always love coming to this bar, it’s warm and cosy with great service! They have delicious wines and surprisingly some pretty decent vegetarian options which is usually not the specialty of the French, I feel like they hate vegetarians but not this bar! 🥳

Really nice bar in an unexpected location. The decor inside is amazing and I felt like I was dragged back in time to a New York cross Steampunk cross Industrial setting. Unfortunately we couldn't get a table as we hadn't booked in advance, but the video were able to accommodate us at one of the standing areas and it worked out as I was able to absorb more of the ambience this way! The drinks were great and the table service was awesome. Everything works the way it is at this venue. Next time I'll be back to try the food!

What a beautiful beautiful place! We celebrated NYE here and I cannot recommend this place highly enough. The decor, the food and the drinks were absolutely five star. This is my first time trying french cuisine properly and I am definitely coming back. Special mention to Tom who served us throughout the night-his drink recommendations paired with his banter absolutely topped off the night. Thank you Tom and Bar Margaux, we will be back soon!

A menu that suits everyone. Whilst it's there aren't 50 options, the options they have are fantastic. I went for the burger, and it was definitely one of the best burgers I've ever had. Definitely not a fast food burger. It was quality on all fronts. Waiters were super friendly and extremely attentive.

We visited Bar Margaux for a birthday. From entry through to payment of the bill, the service was a stand out; especially our waiter, who was happy to stop and talk wine and cocktails alongside providing efficient, friendly and attentive service throughout. The french inspired menu provided good choice, and the snapper was a stand-out — fresh and perfectly cooked — a great match with delicious and buttery mashed potato served on the side. Great fit out and atmosphere, which suited the date-night vibe, with a late night European inspired bar providing a great aesthetic to suit the food and mood. We will be back once we've finished digesting our meal. Thank you!

Very unimpressed. Ordered through Providor, order was wrong, and they didn't even bother to apology. The portion was rather small for the price of the casoulet. Let you order on Sunday on Providor yet they are closed and don't deliver on that day... I won't be back.

We ordered the "Winter Set Menu for two" from Bar Margaux last night. through Providoor. It was a really delicious meal that was easy to prepare. Great value for 4 courses. Food was fantastic, I absolutely loved the burger and the oysters. This restaurant is on the pricey side but you probably know this before booking to come here. The decor of this place has a great ‘French’ vibe, great atmosphere, not too loud not too quite. I would definitely come back again and suggest for anyone looking for a nice ‘special occasion’ type of restaurant to come here, it won’t let you down! (Drinks were great too)

The ambiance is old school bistro and the cocktail was good. The food definitely was a let down except for the steak. Everything else was just about okay but the desserts were a disaster. The souffle tasted like sweet omelette. Would recommend for a cocktail just for the ambiance

Walked in without a reservation and luckily got seated pretty quickly. Was offered complimentary water (still or sparkling) immediately, which was nice. Table service was prompt and friendly. Amaretto Sour was okay, as were the desserts. The best one was the chocolate mousse, followed by the crème brûlée, and then the raspberry vanilla souffle. The ambiance was good and the bar is beautiful.

Margaux rhymes with escargot and let me tell you it was nothing short of French bistro vibes.. 💃 The underground vibe means time flies and before you know it, it’s closing. Beautiful bar!

Bar Margaux is a vibe. What a lovely bistro hotel bar vibe. The floor is checkered black and white and warm lighting was warm and homely. Menu is a classic, staff were warm and fantastic to accommodate to our needs - especially since we rocked up at 10.30pm for a table for 5. Food felt quite authentic French style bistro. Sauces were made well and we were able to share plates after a theatre production and have a discussion with a near and dear bunch of friends. Although none of the dishes stood out specifically to me, more can be done to improve the duck burger. It felt one dimensional, and would be able to benefit from a strong slaw / sauce and alternate textures.

We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Bar Margaux. The space is cozy and unique and we were happy we were seated in a booth. The staff were all so friendly and really know their food and beverages. We all loved our meals and the stand out being the souflee which was large enough for the four of us to share. I had the chicken and it was melt in your mouth - didn't really need a knife to cut it - delicious!

The entrance to Bar Margaux, from the outside, is absolutely unremarkable. But stepping through the door you would believe you have been instantly transported into another world. A lively, dimly lit bar which is somewhere between 1920s Paris and New York. The salmon was beautifully poached and was thus melting in the mouth. The vegetables contrasted really well with the salmon both in terms of the texture and flavour, and the baby leeks were fantastic. The burger, contrary to how it looked, was surprisingly light. It was a bit on the salty side which I think may have been due to the sauce, but apart from that it was rich, flavourful, juicy, and all the other good things your want from a burger. I especially liked mopping up the remaining sauce with the last bites of my bun and patties. The chips were perfect too. Hot, crunchy, salted. Friendly waiters and efficient service. Can’t wait to come back here. 9/10

A uniquely intimate setting that balances atmosphere with truely wonderful food and even better service! The food was refined and tasty. We were explore new flavours in the Beef tongue Capriccio which were certainly interesting. The table site manned of all the staff was excellent. So much can be said of a restaurant with staff that make you feel like a friend. A particular mention to Daniel who is up there with one of the best servers we’ve had in an Australian restaurant. A must visit destination in Melbourne !

ORDERED: 🧠 Steak Tartare, Marie Rose ($22.00) 🍥 St. Jacques Cru, raw sliced scallops, compressed watermelon, lime, lemon balm and walnut vinaigrette ($18.00) 🐋 Poisson du Jour, sautéed potatoes, fennel, chervil beurre blanc ($35.00) REVIEW: Between 3 people, who shared the mains (I had my own fish), it was enough. My favourite was my own main, poisson du jour. There's something about fish (king dory) in beurre blanc sauce that just does me right EVERY SINGLE TIME. It's rich buttery sauce which has so much impact and flavour. Slightly sweet and tangy, it also helps to bring out the natural sweetness of fish as well. For the entrees, steak tartare and the raw sliced scallops - I wasn't particularly blown away. Just found it basic with no frills attached. The atmosphere is meant to replicate an NYC subway. White tiles line the walls, with black lines to add some character and depth. It's very dark, which may be good if you're there to slowly wine and dine your meal - but it wasn't quite my vibe. I prefer to see and appreciate the food that I'm eating! Service was decent. Had a little mishap where I was still charged the credit card surcharge when I paid in cash... but it was rectified when I brought it to another waiter's attention.

Bar Margaux have absolutely nailed it. Such a gorgeous venue with friendly, switched on staff who were so knowledgeable about the menu. Great drinks list too with great wines by the glass on offer. The steak tartare is a must have and the charcuterie plate was really good too. Baker Bleu bread is used here and it was another highlight. Had the tuna nicoise and the lamb dish, both were full of flavour and I’d definitely return for the lamb. Finished off with crème brûlée because who wouldn’t? You’re missing out if you don’t try it. Also had the pot au chocolat which was equally delicious. We will return here often for the atmosphere, lovely staff and more delicious food & wine.

One of the perks from iso life is to be able to partake in fine dining at home. Bar Margaux's full menu is available for takeaway and thought and care has been put into packaging them neatly and keeping the food warm. An excellent meal, one with more hits than misses. The mains were delicious, especially the beef bourguignon and cassoulet. Bold and rich in flavours, and deeply savoury. The pine mushroom, and puy lentils and winter greens were the perfect accompaniment to the mains - light on the palate and balanced out the richness of the mains. A most enjoyable meal, and I can't wait to dine in in the future.

Loved this place, it was packed on a Sunday night after Christmas but the staff still managed to spend time explaining the menu, recommend dishes and wine. Would thoroughly recommend the cocktails to get the party started, beautifully presented and delicious. Escargot were fun, steak was melt in the mouth fabulous and the creme brulee a perfect finish. We'll definitely be going back to Bar Margaux for food and entertainment!

Our 20th wedding anniversary, in lock-down. Our meal arrived during he night with martinis and Shiraz. Warmed everything as per directions, for lunch. It was magical. Soup A L'Oignon, Salade Lyonnaise, Duck A L'Orange Pithivier, pomme puree and Mousse au chocolat. The afternoon made us forget our worries. Thank you so very much.

Had a really nice relaxed time at this bar, the staff were all really nice and accommodating. It is a little bit on the expensive side but the food and drinks selection is good. The music they play is a little strange, it doesn't seem to fit the decor (80s rock in a wine bar).

My boyfriend and I are from Toronto, Canada and we had just arrived to Melbourne. We googled best cheeseburgers in Melbourne and your bar came up. Immediately when we walked in the host (don’t know his name) was very welcoming, cracked a joke and sat us at the bar. MAC was the bartender that was taking care of us. He was very professional, polite and made us feel very comfortable. The atmosphere is unreal in this bar, we were very impressed. Mac also gave us suggestions on other places to visit while we are here as well Overall the experience was amazing and I would definitely recommend anyone traveling to go and check this place out.

The ambiance is so spot on here that it feels like you’re entering a different world when you step inside. The drinks are not only delicious but incredibly visually appealing! Definitely a place not to be missed.

Beautiful bar with delicious food. The burger was juicy and full of flavour. The onion soup also very rich. I very much look forward to our next meeting. Thank you.

Amazing atmosphere, delicious food and excellent staff and service. We came for a birthday celebration and could not fault Bar Margaux. Even though they were busy as it was a Friday night, the service was top notch and staff remained attentive to us and all patrons and were chirpy throughout! The food was absolutely amazing... fresh, hot and delicious, our first time trying French cuisine and it did not disappoint. The burger, steak and the escargot were some of our personal favorites. My only suggestion would be to perhaps add some signage outside on the street as it was a little hard to find. Thank you for such an amazing experience! We will certainly be returning.

Food is good. I found it a bit noisy with loudish music and hard surfaces but that may be your thing.

Fantastic cocktails and wonderful staff. We were greeted very warmly. Would definitely recommend. We were celebrating a birthday and had a great experience. The bartender was fantastic and served up delicious whisky and gin based cocktails. An intimate place with a lovely atmosphere.

Another amazing bar/restaurant in Melbourne. Like a lot of establishments in Melbourne you can have all the bells and whistles but can lack that welcoming atmosphere. Another business chasing $$$, Some people care about what they are paying for and not where they’re seen.

Have been here +10 times and every time I love the underwhelming entrance opening into strong interior design and friendly staff. The size is great. Large enough to get some atmosphere but small enough to restrict the place from feeling overwhelmed. Food is good. The booths are worth getting. My biggest frustration on a busy night is the noise. Whilst I love the interior design, the acoustics of the place are subpar making it extremely difficult to have a basic conversation and I usually leave with a sore voice. Would love for them to introduce some soft surfaces to better absorb some of the noise. Apart from that it’s great. I would highlight, since it’s opening, I have consistently found the staff to be great. Genuine. Relatable. Helpful. Friendly. And at time insightful. Highly recommend.

Fantastic experience until the point I was almost forced to tip on a confusing payment screen with options of 15%, 20% or 25% gratuity.

Some of the best service, unpretentious food and late night grooves that you will find in Melbourne. I could gush all day about how great the wait staff are and how well ever single person in the establishment from the bar staff to the kitchen crew knows and loves what they serve. But ultimately you should just go check it out for yourself. Tell Sarah I said hi and that we love her if you go.
