The memorial statue of the founder of the State Library of Victoria, Sir Redmond holds centre stage and in a prominent position in the middle of the entrance steps of the forecourt and front lawns area. Barry founded some of Melbourne's most famous public institutions, including the University of Melbourne and Royal Melbourne Hospital. The statue of Barry, measuring 2.97 metres tall and having a plinth at 2.58 metres, was installed in front of the State Library of Victoria in 1887. He was a prominent Melbournian who briefly held the position of the first solicitor-general of Victoria before being elevated to the new bench of the Supreme Court of Victoria. He died in November 1880.

Great spot to see a statue of one of the most important people in the founding of the state and for donating the resources necessary for building the state library behind it. Many tour groups also meet in front of this statue including free walking tours.

Is that 1880? Long time ago. He doesn't seem to age.

There are a lot of people, so I don’t know if I will be able to concentrate while studying here.

We had our lunch there recently while on hokidays. Great place to watch the world go by and just take everything in around us. Always something happening in Melbourne and often for little price or free. Alot of the little Lane ways have the best restaurants. Love the CBD

Well known and easily found meeting point between Victoria State Library and Melbourne Metro Central Tram Station. Used as gathering point for Melbourne's "I'm Free" tours.
