😐 I'm not sure why I got a different experience to other people by the looks of the reviews, but the manager/owner Lisette was curt and rude. Avoid unless you enjoy painful Karen energy. The rest of the staff were lovely so it was a disappointing experience. People often mention coffee, staff, friendly, great, store, service, Melbourne, owner, good, East,

The place to come for that little bit of everything. On a different route to work I found this glorious little place and if I’d had more time I would’ve stopped for a cuppa. Nestled in leafy East Melbourne, this is an old time store that stocks just about everything you do need and might need. Wine seems to be popular here but also Turkish delight, croissants, frozen food, vegemite, dry cleaning, teabags, next to, fresh bread, feather dusters and pretty much most things. The lovely Carly chatted to me about the place that has been here for nearly 30 years and has a regular, local following. Two large couches out the front surrounded by books and toys invite you onto the covered area, with succulents and plants giving it a homely feel - as though you’re sitting with a neighbour on their front porch. It is a place that you can only appreciate if you visit so hop along and check it out. Will take many of you back down memory lane.

This is a wonderful little gem in East Melbourne. We just moved into the area recently and we are so glad we came across it! The coffee is always great and we love getting a fresh roll or sandwich. Staff are always so friendly and smiley. Thank you!

My partner just moved into the neighbourhood so I stopped in today for a coffee and a toastie. Lovely staff, and it's such a cute little shop with a great mix of staples and more eclectic produce. Love the art you're selling too. Will be back for sure!

The general store is such a delight, living locally I frequently pop in and have encouraged friends to do so too. All of which are as equally delighted as me. I’m consistently amazed that I can get everything I need in a small local store, the coffee is both fantastic and reasonably priced and all of the staff are very friendly, championed by Lizette. An absolute gem of a place and we are lucky to have this on our doorstep in East Melbourne.

One of my favourite places in East Melbourne. I often compare it to "Cheers" as everyone knows your name and is so welcoming and friendly. Being someone who is not originally from the city, this personable approach to their service always make me feel right at home - no pretence or fluff. Just good people serving the local community. Unfortunately I think my predecessor has some basic education to complete in Economics, if he thinks a small business (i.e. a General Store) can compete with the buying power of the biggest supermarket chains in the country. Harry clearly has some deep-seeded (potentially iso related) issues, but as a regular (rather than some angry blow in) to the East Melbourne General Store I can verify that the staff, owner and coffee have always been exceedingly pleasant to deal with.

Yet another lovely relaxed impromptu Ham/Cheese/Tomato toastie with grain mustard, and a coffee today. We are so lucky to have this unique friendly cafe/providore in our midst. Lisette and the staff are always cheery and helpful. They stock great bread, but you have to know which day your favourite comes in to get it while it lasts! Another reason I love East Melbourne.

Open for coffee and snacks after four o'clock. Coffee is well made and the cakes are good. There is a small but well thought out range of groceries and convenience foods. Sandwiches available.

What a lovely little shop - old fashioned in a good way, with old fashioned service with a smile. Excellent range of products, including wine, and gourmet groceries. Definitely worth having a look, especially if you are a local!

Brilliant Grocery Store in Melbourne thunderstorm! We arrived at the store in baking heat as the first drops of a thunder storm started to fall. The delightful & very helpful owner set us with drinks and settled us on the couch as the storm set in. The store is really well set up for drinks & snacks, books to read, toys for the kids, free water and a great atmosphere. Wish we had a store like this near where I live!!

Don’t know what’s wrong with Harry Hunter, because there is absolutely nothing wrong with our beloved EMGS, Lisette or the coffee. We love plonking down on the couch with a toastie and a cappuccino. The staff are very friendly. Audrey is just wonderful. A great providore with fine and often rare products on offer.

I have been to this store multiple times. It has a retro feeling to it with a healthy sandwich bar and excellent coffee. They pride on great quality grocery items and promote a lot of products from small businesses from the state. The staff are very helpful and friendly and love a good chat. Lisette, the very sweet and friendly owner has groomed them and taught them well. PS: Love the plants at the front. Can’t wait for COVID to end so I can sit outside basking in the sun and have a sandwich and a beverage.

Exceptional service and have the country feel to it. Exceptional Portuguese custard tarts, even better than the ones I have tried in Portugal or anywhere else for that matter! One of the best coffees in the area too. Very touched and glad to have them so close.

What a treasure of East Melbourne the General Store is! Fresh pastries, sandwiches drinks and coffee. All the staff are friendly and professional and the store is welcoming and well stocked. Local residents and visitors can enjoy the large variety of products and excellent service. A great place to stop and have a coffee and cake in the sun in the front of the store (when Covid ends!) I'm happy to support a local business that really does provide a service to the community.

Had been enjoying going here for salad sandwiches and iced coffees but unfortunately today the bread was very stale and the iced coffee was warm with milk straight off the shelf and a teaspoon of ice cream.

5 stars for service. So refreshing to come in and feel truly welcomed in an atmosphere where nothing is too much trouble. Just the basics in terms of coffee and food but done in a good old fashioned way that is rare now.

Our local store has risen to the COVID occasion and has a huge variety of products to keep us happy and safely near home. A great coffee and pastry served by the friendly staff to take home is always my treat!

Little store but stocks plenty of pantry items you would expect at a super market although over priced comparatively and staff move at a snail pace. Stay away from the coffee and the owner though, both are horrible to deal with.

A very quaint local spot for groceries or a quick cuppa, made special by the owner who seems to take a real interest in her patrons. I was having a cup of coffee and someone likely drug affected walked in; rather than asking them to leave / calling for help she invited him to have a snooze on her front couch with some water and a blanket. All this at 11am on grand final day!

What a lovely small business. I went here today and had a very nice salad sandwich. The owner Lizette was very very friendly and loved a chat. Her customer service was awesome. I told her I’ll be back. Lizette I hope you remember serving me. :)

"I absolutely love this grocery store and cafe, charmingly managed by a wonderful lady and her friendly staff. It's one of the few places in the neighbourhood that serves good coffee in the evenings, offers a selection of good wines, and provides essential groceries. A true all-in-one gem!"

Hidden… in a good way. I Run in the area all the time and decided to stop at the end of a long session and grab a much needed coffee. It was sensational. Lovely quiet Saturday morning vibe. Pleasant lady who I assume was the owner served me. Will be back for sure.

😠 Very poor experience today. While trying to compare 3 different coffee beans, when I set one down to look at another, I had a staff member take the packages away from me and put them away.
