Great, specialized museum with a variety of artifacts from all over the Mayan empire. Enjoyed that most of the exhibit descriptions included English too! We also liked that there was a wide perspective of Mayan culture presented - from the explanations about the language, calendar and record keeping to stories and literature written about the culture throughout history, as well as textiles, pottery, jewelry and other artifacts to diagrams and dioramas that helped to explain the culture. We are excited to visit more of the archeological sites in the Yucatan now with all of the new information we gained here!

Nice museum, a pity that all videos are in Spanish, no captions, no English. Also the conquistadors are presented on a biased angle like if they brought so many good things to the indegenious. It is even said that thanks to them they came to know God? It probably would have been much better without colonization, like everywhere else.

Easy to walk with plaques to explain what you are looking at. I had a wheel chair the museum supplied for free. The exhibits are awesome. You can take photos as long as you don't use flash. Take your time and enjoy it's magic!

Visit the museum if you’re in Merida for more than a few days. It gives you some background information on the Maya civilisation and houses some interesting artifacts from the surrounding archaeological sites. I found the museum a bit short and underwhelming. It’s an average museum, not great but also not bad.

Meh. Strange organisation of exhibition, starting from modern days. Museum is not big at all, even the building is big and modern. Price for that is huge - 150 pesos. In CDMX in Museo Nacional de Antropologia it costs only 80 pesos for much better exhibition

This museum is absolutely top-notch. It is so clean and easy to follow. I was absolutely stunned by every single room and exhibit. A lot of the signs are in Spanish and Maya. Some signs also include English, but not all of them. I highly recommend coming to this museum because it shows so much about the Maya culture, and it’s overall very beautiful and impactful.

We loved it. But it was disappointing to have just one floor in a huge building. One floor and 4 exhibition halls where details of Mayan struggles and history is wonderfully captured. Except there is no Mayan themselves being represented. Their voice is missing , their life is all there

Very lovely museum that gave us a wonderful window into Mayan culture. Would love to return and continue learning. The audiovisual components were excellent. Also a great option for viewing solar eclipses, if you're in town for the next one.

(Translated by Google) Good afternoon When will you have access to the museum? I went on Sunday, September 20; because I read on the Google Maps page that it was already open and what was my surprise that only the guard informed me that although it appears on the page as open, there is still no service. Today, October 9, I dial the phone that appears on the page and it automatically sends me to the mailbox. Fantastic place to spend some cool time ! Great statues, architecture, artwork, jewelry etc from the Maya culture. Friendly staff educated me on the types of gods and their place in the Maya/Aztec religious hierarchy. A must see if in Merida highly recommend!

Quite a disappointment. Campeche Maya museum is half the size but very well done. I’m a big museum goer and I had high expectations with such a big building and I heard it was a referent for Maya history. The main Maya permanent exposition it’s quite confusing, you will begin learning about nowadays Maya, then you’ll learn about how Christianity transformed them, then jump to their calendar, with some disconnected videos along the way. Most items exposed don’t have any tag whatsoever, you don’t know what they are, their age or where do they come from. To finish up and eerie fixation repeated again and again through the museum with the Spanish conquest and murder of the Maya.

Great staff. Very helpful. Not crowded on weekdays afternoon. Building gives an impression that it may be a multistory museum but it is all on part of the main floor. Museum is awesome. Staff is wonderful. We were hoping to eat something or at least go to the coffee shop. Both were closed. Restaurant is not even open from what we understood. Guided tour is not available, stalest in the afternoon. Many of the exhibits don’t have English explanations sad! One of my issue with the museum is that it starts with conquest a lot. I was more interested in Mayan culture as the name indicates. Mayan culture representation is done well however it could have been so much more in-depth. Many signs and descriptions are below 3 feet in height and so many even lower, making you bend down a lot for these exhibits. So much potential for improvement to make it grab your heart. Mayan culture deserves way more. I still give it a 4 star because one should visit this place for sure. Overall, totally worth the visit. I’d say a Grand may not be the word but a Good Mayan Museum for sure.

If you have visited Mayan ruins, than this museum is a must, additionally it provides an escape from the searing heat of Merida. For an English speaker it would be nice if everything was translated, or if an English speaking guide or portable audio phones were available. On one side is a nice short bit on evolution and evidence of the giant meteorite crash off the coast of Yucatán, believed to have caused the great extinction of most dinosaurs, long before our human ancestors emerged. On the Mayan side we learn about early Mayan myths of origin from an egg, not unlike many indigenous, Asian, even Finnish myths. The Museum artifacts trace several stages of Mayan culture, up to and including colonization. When we got back to our hotel, a review of the Spanish only Museum brochure indicated there was a theatre, which shows a 3D video on the Mayans. We wish we had known that. Maybe because we visited on Sunday, the theatre was closed, as was the restaurant.

Interesting, and appropriately sized. Clean, accessible, situated in a beautiful building. Covers a wide range of Mayan history, from pre-classical to current day. The information about the calendar and writing systems were particularly interesting.

Its quite small, audiovisual and interactive design is nice but I expected to find special pieces but there aren't a lot. All mitological stories in these place.

Disappointment. Very static, compact and by far not a wholesome Mayan story. Not even a mention of cocoa, a ballgame is only briefly mentioned, poor mythology ... Not everything is in English.

Nice museum to learn about the Yucatan peninsula and Mayan history. Friendly staff. Bar could be a bit nicer and it would be nice if they had the introductory video right at the start in English too, or at least with English subtitles. Other things in the museum were also only in Spanish, although most were in English too.

Excellent educational experience for myself and family. Beautifully laid out displays with detailed descriptions in Spanish, English and Mayan for most of the museum. There were some interactive screens which were fun for the kids as well. Quiet environment, low lighting to keep the items on display from deterioration. Cool, Comfortable temperature inside.

Good museum! It has a lot of explanatory boards and it's a joy to go around reading everything. It gives you a really good explanation about the Mayan culture. Highly recommended before going to visit archeological sites that don't have too much explanations inside.

This was a very nice and informative museum. It had visual media presentations of the Maya and their spiritual beliefs. The collection of artifacts was not like the museum of Mexico City, but it was a good collection from textiles, Christianity, ceremonial, and daily life models. Pretty cool.

The weather forecast called for rain so we decided to go to the museum. Well you should go whether its rainy or not as it is a great way to learn about Mayan culture. We are English speakers and really appreciated reading about the artifacts in our language. Lots of amazing displays and you could easily spend a few hours reading and learning. Highly recommend. Price 150 pesos per adult which we thought was great value.

Great way to spend the day. Plan of dedicating at least 2 hours of your time there if you want to read most of the placards. Lots to see, half the museum is dedicated to the Mayan culture of today and the other half showcases ancient Mayan relics. Another part was about some random French artist. Her stuff was a little risqué and distasteful.

There are some interesting stuff in this museum which shows Mayan history and stories. Compare with National Museo, 150p price is a bit high. No restaurants and refreshments shop over there. No bicycle locks alongside the road.

This is an exceptionally well run museum. Security is vigilant and helpful. Signage is multi lingual on the exhibits. Special priced entry for inapam (25 pesos) though rumor is that Sunday is discount or free for Yucatan residents (license etc as period).

Mayan cultural museum definitely worth a visit when in Mérida. It starts with the story of the dinosaur extinction by meteorites and then extends into Mayan civilization. There are several educational videos that are in Spanish. However, all the main exhibits do have English captions and descriptions. We learned a lot about Mayan history, language, beliefs and customs.

A quite decent museum to learn about Mayan people. There is a quite important staff to welcome you and guide you across the museum and the information displayed are worth it. Not everything is translated in English but you get the most important information. I would have appreciated more information about Mayan history however.

  • 3/5 Bob le F. 4 years ago on Google
Missing more detailed information, all that is given is quite superficial. Also the position of Maya’s nowadays remains unclear. Maybe because of politics. Translations in English are not consequent. Unfortunately there is a high number of replica’s.

Nice museum worth visiting. You can learn a lot more about the Mayans here than at the ruins. Lots of neat artifacts with plaques that have info about the item. Only complaint is most of the plaques are very low to the ground and on metal so they are difficult to read. Most plaques are in 3 languages. Spanish, English and I assume Mayan.

Nice museum (lots of interesting facts). The visit takes approximatly 1 hour, which is a good length for this kind of museum. One negative point: some of the best infographics in the museum are only in Spanish and Mayan. However 90% of the museum has an English translation.

Loved this museum so much, educational, beautiful and a great way to spend a few hours. Fair warning you are not allowed to video tape inside the museum (I did until I was told not to oopps) not suggesting anyone do this. There is alot to see and rooms to enter with short movies to learn about the ways of the Mayan people good for family, dates, or solo trip! Cost was 150 pesos =$7.38 USD

Designed by ‘Grupo Arquidecture’, the concept behind this landmark building is the sacred mayan ‘Ceiba’ tree. The museum hosts a well curated permanent exhibition that guides you through the timeline of this incredible civilisation to the day. Temporary exhibitions spice up the content, making it a great experience.

Outstanding museum! Full of history and accurate representations of the culture. I recommend you take your time on reading all the placards and watch the videos in the small cinemas around the inside of the museum to fully picture the history. Only photos with no flash allowed and don’t forget to visit the store on your way out!

This was an excellent experience. The museum gives a very good depiction of Mayan history and culture, from ancient times, to the pre-Columbian classical age, the coming of the Spanish and their modern history today in the Yucatan. Most exhibits are in Spanish, Mayan and English. Many dioramas, artifacts and more. Well worth a couple of hours.

One massive floor of exhibition spaces. The museum begins with a Maya identity spaces and terminates with the expected artifacts display. Many of the Yucatán archeological sites have removed their sculptures and display them here (El Balam, Chichén Itzá). Great supplement to the Maya route. I learned a lot about the Maya and even found one object that was strangely omitted from explanation (see here).

Love this place, in this Codice and the other three existing Codicies is found most of what we practice today as far as calendar, Mathematics, Agriculture, Astronomy and many more scientific discoveries that Europeans did not have. Then, they claimed they discovered all this to keep the credit for themselves. Lol

It is a good one time go-to place. The tickets are a little bit expensive though. Museum had a lot of historical components, good to know history of many things. Would recommend maybe explain the videos in English as well or with captions. Easily 2-3 hours to be spend in here. Try visiting in the morning, so there is less crowd for good photos. The only thing was price is more, other than that it’s good to go one time, if you’re in the area.
