What a great museum to visit, especially if you'll be going to Ek Balam and/or Palenque archeological zones. They have done a great job of treating those places in the context of the time they existed and within our modern context. In many places in the world, the ruins would be destroyed in favor of hanging up the most beautiful parts in a museum somewhere. This museum has used preservation and exhibition models to educate the audience. For the folks who prefer English, all of the exhibits are translated and included in downloads of Pdf files provided from QR code at the entrance, so you can follow along.

Visiting this museum is not just about the current exhibits, it’s also about the gorgeous mansion or casona. The exhibits are very interesting and beautiful. You can spend as little as 1 hour to 3 hours. It’s so nice to see a revival of this once neglected area.

One of the poorest museums I have ever seen. The palace around it is not uninteresting, but the exhibition is not worth to visit, unless you have special interests. Loveless pictures of people a foreinger will not know, some broken pottery, some video presentation. Don't get me wrong, if you are into this - 5 Stars! But that was kind of waste of time.

This building is beautiful inside and out. Admission is free for those with an INAPAM card. There is an English guide to the exhibits...you scan the QR code to get it. The exhibits on the ground floor about ancient Maya hieroglyphic writing are very interesting. The exhibit of contemporary Mayan stitchery and fashion design is showcases current artists.

This place is so very beautiful, and you can stroll by it as many times as you want during your time in Paseo Montejo. Really, it's an architectural dream. For the museum, they have special pandemic hours, and I would advise you to check out their social media for any changes. As of January 2021, they are open Monday - Friday from 10am to 5 pm, so your last chance to go in is 4:30 pm. They take your temperature and they even gifted me some lovely postcards.

Well done museum. Entry was 90 pesos. Air conditioned. Clean bathrooms. Two levels. The upper level is for temporary exhibits. The museum focuses on Mayan and local archaeological work. Almost everything is in Spanish only (download Google translate if you don’t read Spanish). When I was there there was a QR code to download most of the interpretations in an English pamphlet onto your phone. A lot of interpretation. I spent over an hour reading all of the interpretations.

Warning: advertised as being “open” but is not. Stopped by after 10am on Tuesday, Feb 8 (during hours it’s advertised as being open) and it was closed. No signage in any language on the entrance indicating such either. Other reviews indicate the same issue; should have read them before going. Would have been nice for them to tell people, especially after walking through a rainstorm to get there…

Nice museum, there’s not much information in English but my favorite part was the top floor to see embroidery art that’s very cool. The Mayan exhibit is decent, I just had a hard time understanding because there was not translation in English. I wish I knew how to read in Spanish!

Beautiful mansion turned museum! The Maya exhibit was excellent, there were so many unique artifacts from all over Mexico. The architecture alone is magnificent, truly a must see if you are in the area. My family and I were only able to see the first floor, so we are looking forward to going back and seeing the rest of the museum soon!

As others have said, there are little to no explanations in English or other languages so you're pretty much on your own. It's a great museum that's not too expensive, entrance fees are $95 pesos per person. There's no parking inside only on the street so you'll need to go around a few times to find a spot. Lots of really cool things to see in this museum and didn't really encounter the curmudgeon up front that many reviewers were talking about.

Great museum in an amazing architectural space! Perfect indoor activity when visiting Merida, especially before going out and exploring any ruins. For non-Spanish speakers, you may need to be a bit creative and flexible once inside, but it’s totally worth it. Google translate helped to fill in any gaps.

I hated it. Spent 20 minutes. Reading the reviews people stated that explanations were in both Spanish and English. Complete farce. Most pieces had no information or was only in Spanish. I wasn't in the mood to google translate everything and unfortunately the reviews stating you didn't need to were incorrect. You may as well just look at online pictures unfortunately. The architecture was the one in person thing worth viewing. Maybe I am spoiled to Museums after CDMX but this is my opinion on this Museum.

It was beautiful outside but not so great inside. Plus they charge an entry fee. Description is only in Spanish so it is difficult for an English speaking person to understand. No interactive exhibits or recorded descriptions

Our guidebook said this was one of the best anthropology museums in all of Mexico but it was wrong... I think they moved most of the interesting stuff to the newer museum on the north side of Merida (not sure). The place is super small (can be done in 30 minutes easy). They have some interesting artifacts but only a few pieces. There are no English translations so you have no idea of what you are looking at. I would not recommend this at all unless you want to get out of the heat for a few minutes.

Welcome to a nice small museum with a good exposition on two floors. It‘s a short 30 minutes visit to habe a look at what they present. Ticket is 65$. For whatever reason they spray your backpack from all sides(!) and ask you to carry it in front of you. No one was able to explain why. Only statement was that this is their politics. You get to know it once you paid for the ticket. By the way, most of the exhibits are presented in large glass boxes.

For $65 pesos you would be able to access a 10 minute exhibition of very few pieces, you won't be allowed to access the area upstairs and you won't find texts translated in other languages. Even if you know Spanish it would have a very short explanation that doesn't help at all.

Wrongly advertised to be open and no clear directions on where the entrance is. We ended up getting fully drenched in the rain trying to figure that out. The management needs to get it together. They’re putting a bad light on the history and culture of this place .

Probably the most dull museum I've ever been to. Staff seem to have given up on life. Bathroom dirty. No effort made for non-Spanish speakers to understand or learn anything, assuming there is something of interest to learn. Was not free however was only $85Mex. Very disappointed.

The building is nice, European style architecture, but unless you want to look at some old bowls and not a whole lot else (there were some small sculptures which were quite interesting, hence the 2 stars rather than 1) I would give this one a miss. I saw everything in like 20 minutes. Maybe us gringos stole all the interesting stuff for our own museums

Excellent exhibit on art and culture of an ancient civilization contemporary with but different from the Maya. Included great images and explanations of the actual archaeological dig. Another exhibit of an individual man's collection of mesoamericana . Very informative. QR code gets you the main captions in English.

The museum is situated in quite a remarkable building in Merida. Entrance 90 pesos was really good. The exhibition was well structured and very interesting. The only thing was, it’s all in Spanish. I have quite a limited knowledge of Spanish and I’d love to understand all the cool animations and texts. Translating all was a bit difficult and time consuming. I’d appreciate at least some English translations.

I don't know if I missed something, but I only saw two exhibits, one from Ek Balam, the other from Palenque. A lot of stuff on display were reproductions. There were some beautiful pieces, but I really thought there would be more exhibits. It was also kind of sad to see such beautiful pieces removed from their original locations.

Great museum! You can get very close to the artifacts, and the architecture of the house is stunning. It is a bit small, though. We came around the last hour they were open and still had enough time to see everything. Not everything has English translations, I did have to use Google to translate some information on the exhibits.

The entrance to the place is very economical and they didn't charge us more for being foreigners. The museum has a rich collection of Mayan artifacts, as well as works of art and sculptures of all kinds. The only thing I would like is to give some maintenance to some areas that already look worn out over time. The rest is very good

What a gem to find along Paseo de Montejo. Unassuming given that it is inside a gorgeous 2 storey mansion. There is no English audio although they provide a PDF download for your mobile device. There is an English guide book if you leave ID at the entrance desk. The first floor was a varied selection of Mayan exhibits. Truly impressive and in varying conditions. The second floor displays the equipment and covers the important role Merida played in historical aerial photography. Rooms full of high resolution prints of various cities and towns are on display. It was incredible to see how everything has developed over the decades.

(Translated by Google) They have posted that they close at 5 p.m. We arrived at 4:30 and they were already closing; They allowed us to pass but only to the room on the ground floor, they no longer allowed us to go up to the room on the first floor. At 4:45 we were inside and they started turning off lights. Apparently schedules are not respected.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful building with a great history ... Unfortunately it is not the great Anthropology museum as it was years ago. Currently it works as a general museum with some beautiful Pre-Hispanic pieces with exhibitions of different themes, among them Archaeological, Photographic, cloth weaving, and many other topics. Ask about the possibility of a guided tour of the building (most of it since the lower part cannot be accessed because it is the INAH warehouse) explaining its history. It is worth visiting just to know the interior and imagine its beauty in its years of splendor!

(Translated by Google) Located along the Paseo Montejo this small museum is nice and not crowded at all (unfortunately). It houses some very interesting finds found in the various excavation sites of the main Mayan cities; the information panels are very detailed and understandable and the building that houses the exhibition is a marvel. Obviously the Museo del Mundo Maya is much larger and with many more artifacts but for the small entry price it is worth taking a stroll here too. Upstairs there is also an interesting photographic exhibition that portrays many areas of Yucatan from above after a few decades and it is quite impressive to see how much man is destroying nature to create roads and buildings.

Very informative, its only in Spanish so you may want to read up or use Google translate, word recognition. You can see it all in less than 3 hours, you can cross Montejo and there are juice bars, Marquesitas, this is a beautiful area to walk down the Paseo Montejo. You can pick up a horse drawn carriage.

Entrance fee is 65 mxp. The museum is not big, it's only a few pieces you can see there, but still very nice to get an idea about the history of the Mayan.

Great museum. It has 2 exhibits: one about local anthropology and the other about the history and collection of local artifacts. Both fascinating. Nothing in English so bring your phone with Google Translate and use the lens feature. It was great

I believe the purpose of the museum needs to be more clearly started at the start. Not recommended for anyone who doesn't speak advanced Spanish.

Beautiful building but disappointed exhibits. 1st floor limited archeological and anthropological exhibits. 2nd floor is a small portrait gallery. All was quiant but small. Good for 30 - 45 minutes of your time. They really could do much more in this space. The building itself is beautiful.

I had not expected to find a museum with exhibits dedicated to indigenes from an area other than the Yucatan, but I was not disappointed by the depth of the exhibits. Although the exhibit details were only in Spanish, they were easy to understand. The building is spectacular both interior and exterior. The art on the top floor was very colorful but the subject matter was a bit jarring m

Hardly worth visiting. Poor information for an non Spanish speaker, although you can get some info on wifi unfortunately the signal is bad so it cuts out half way. Didnt really rate the exhibits but we may be spoilt by having been in Mexico City. Nothing on the archeological area around Merida. No cafe.

  • 3/5 Bobbi M. 10 months ago on Google
90 pesos to enter, displays are Spanish only. Was told QR codes translate to English. I scanned one and it only brought up a 3D Image of the artifact. I just used Google translate. Only spent about 15-20 min inside. The display area is small in comparison to the building. It mostly tells the story of the site of Ek balam. Nice if you don't have anything else planned but I would say, don't go out of your way to see this one. Go to the Mayan museum.

  • 5/5 Duane H. 1 year ago on Google
Excellent collection of rare Mayan antiquities. Well curated. If you have visited Chichen Itza, Ek Balam or other important sites, this will add to your knowledge and understanding. The current exhibit Idolos, powerfully explains the destruction of Mayan ceremonial objects by the Spanish conquerors.

Good exhibition but they don't have too many artifacts. Foreigners pay 90 pesos as July 2023.

Very good exhibits in a house built during Mérida economic boom in the late 19th/early 20th century. Exhibits focus on prehispánica Mayan culture. Definitely worth a visit.

Small museum with small but interesting exhibition. The price 90p is expensive and with no English explanation there is only one QR code that lead to English explanation but it is in the entrance and nobody tell you, they should put the QR code on each Spanish explanation. A bit disappointing, considering that most of the people that comes here are speaking English. No consideration, a bad image for Merida. Client

Truly disappointing. They want you to pay 95 pesos entry fee for a handful of broken exhibits. Very little to see and really disappointing if you have been to a proper museum of anthropology. Definitely worth skipping....like the rest of Merida. Overhyped and underwhelming.
