What an impressive church! I am not religious myself, but have a high regard for those who are. This is listed on the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail because of it's historical beginnings. It is the oldest church in Louisiana, during a period when Catholicism was the only allowed religion in Louisiana. From the beginning, people of color had to fight for space in religion and a Battle of the Pew was started. In the end, people of color owned three pews per one white pew and there were pews designated for the enslaved in the back. The day I went, a person of color was leading the service. There was a nice mix of white and people of color in the audience. The auditorium is closed for repairs right now. Everyone seemed accepting. The Tomb of the Unknown Slave is along the side of this church. It isn't as fancy as St Louis Cathedral. It is in the Treme and set away from the Quarter. They do have a parking lot in back.

This tribute to the unknown slaves of the Treme neighborhood and should be acknowledged and highlighted much better. I rode the hop on hop off bus to this location because I saw it in small print on the list of sights on its list of stops. The tour guide giving a verbal tour as we rode the bus did not mention it. I had to ask him for its location as I exited the bus.

A very historic Catholic Church, Saint Augustine was founded by free blacks in 1841. The church is not outstanding in appearance and shows need of repair. Hurricane Ida damaged the cross on top and the roof. Services are currently being held in the hall due to the damage and the chapel not able to be entered. Hopefully this great historic church will be repaired soon.

called to inquire about services, and the secretary was so rude, and when i called her out on it, she hung up on me. the church is still damaged, from the last hurricane but they're STILL taking our monetary donations and hanging up on us. this is UNACCEPTABLE. won't be back and most certainly letting ALL of my colleagues, know.

Came for the jazz mass experience and left with the spirit of community. What a wonderful community, welcoming all with warmth and hospitality. The catholic mass was beautifully celebrated.

We visited this historic church while we were at the Treme Festival. Be sure to make a donation when you go in which goes to help keep the church expenses down so they can keep it open. Lots of History here.

Authentic, Catholic and jazz worship. This is New Orleans at it's best! Only a couple blocks out of the French Quarter, and missed by most.

Love how they have dedicated the shrine for the unknown slave and how they recognize that there were most likely more under the foundation all around and so amazed that they allow the public to visit and pay respects.

Of historic significance to the Black Community in New Orleans. Must stop to see the Tomb of the Unknown Enslaved, which is on the outside. The church itself was closed. It may only open on Sundays if it still has a congregation.

Beautiful building with a lot of history. We went here on a bus tour of the city. The business was closed the day we were here, but the tour guide had only good things to say about the Sunday service.

The tilted cross wrapped by iron shackles had a huge impact on me, which had me stood there for a while, silent, as I tried to imagine the lives of those "unnamed slaves". I really appreciated the display which allowed me to reflect on the history not to be repeated.

The gospel mass was amazing, thank you so much! For everyone visiting: please make sure you dress appropriately and have some cash for donations with you. The mass is currently being held in the hall next to the parking lot, not in the actual church.

Typical and suggestive mass, with music and choir. An experience absolutely to try. You can feel the real southern atmosphere.

This was the center of the TrΓ©me Festival last weekend. It’s been one of my favorite festivals, there’s great food to be had. And local artisans selling their wares. Plus a brass band that leads a second line about every hour.
