(Translated by Google) Beautiful Garden near the Meir with benches and beautiful buildings Den Botaniek is in bloom all seasons. Nowhere else in Antwerp can you find so many herbs and plants together. Strolling along the winding paths along the flower beds you forget the busy city, while it is still close by. The whole of Den Botaniek exudes the atmosphere of the past. Initially, the garden with the medicinal herbs belonged to the adjoining St. Elisabeth hospital. Thanks to the efforts of doctor and botanist Claude-Louis Sommé, the garden has grown into an important domain for scientific research. Today you will find about 2000 plant species. With the help of the nameplates, you can easily refresh your plant knowledge. Take a stroll while shopping and enjoy the full sun next to the greenhouse with cacti. Or catch your breath in the shade under one of the special trees. During the exam periods, Den Botaniek is popular with students, who settle on the grass with their textbooks. When you get hungry, you can have lunch in style on the adjacent terrace. Pharmacist Peter van Coudenberghe (1517-1599) created a unique herb and plant garden for the adjacent St-Elisabeth Hospital. He used more than 600 different plants to prepare medicines. This one botanical garden exists to this day. The collection of herbs currently has about 2,000 pieces, of which there are several are protected by law. The conservatory houses a large collection of cacti and exotic plants. The garden itself has beautiful trees and shrubs and a sea of flowers. The pond and frog pool were recently completely renovated. Just in front of the frog pool you will find the artwork "Greening II", donated by artist Monique Donckers. The original civic guard gallery was also given a new look. Garden of the Poets In 2020, former city poet Peter Holvoet-Hanssen renamed Den Botaniek the "Garden of Poets", a green oasis that regularly forms the backdrop for poetry initiatives.

Plantentuin is situated in a very posh Antwerp neighborhood. Businesses around the garden include a very expensive restaurant, an exclusive hotel and fancy brand name stores. The green space is pleasant, well-tended and takes very little time to discover. It does, however, leave a lasting memory.

Beautiful and quiet little garden in the center of the city, a great place to take a rest, listen to the birds, have a picnic, clear your head, enjoy the flowers, ... Best seasons to visit are probably spring and summer. The garden also has a greenhouse with limited opening hours.

The pond and frog pond were recently completely renovated. Just before the frog pond you will find the artwork 'Greening II', donated by artist Monique Donckers. The original militia gallery was also given a new look. He started it in 1548. Twenty years later in 1568 there were already 600 exotic plant species from Africa, Asia and especially America. Needless to say, what a lot of effort and expense it took to get these plants, seeds and bulbs here! Van Coudenberghe therefore took care of it and invented an ingenious means to allow these plants to hibernate. It is a fact that he invented the principle of the orangeries, so that from now on it became possible to hibernate and acclimatize tropical plants in our regions. Unfortunately, during the siege of Antwerp in 1594, the garden was overrun, trampled and destroyed under soldiers' boots and horse hooves... Van Couwdenberghe was then 65 years old and no longer had the energy or the plants to create a new garden. He died in 1599. But fortunately, today the Botanic garden is preserved, protected and maintained so we can enjoy in this little paradise on earth. Opening hours Summer time from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m Winter time from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m Entrance is free.

Beautiful and surprisingly large botanic garden in Antwerp. We wandered around this place for about 30-45 min when visiting the city and it was a great place to relax. It has a large variety of plants from around the world and appeared to be well organized by plant types/families. Docking one star bc the garden was a lil rough around the edges and could have been maintained a little better (especially the succulents, which appeared to be overwatered and probably weren’t the best choice for this climate). Also, the greenhouse was temporarily closed, which was disappointing. Besides that, this garden was a great place to visit and highly recommended.

Nice botanical garden but rather small. The greenhouse is not always accessable and looks really dirty. They could make this place much nicer if they wanted to. Although in summer it is a good spot to go for a picknick or hide from the sun if you can find a place. If you just want to walk through, don’t count so much time as you will be done in 5-10 minutes.

Small but pleasant botanical garden. It is very well kept and there are loads of plant species. It is a true oasis in the city center. There are a few benches where you can take your time to enjoy the environment. At the moment the greenhouse can't be accessed due to Covid restrictions. Dogs are not allowed.

This would have been beautiful if the plants had been watered. Everything was sad and lacking water. We were very disappointed as we were looking forward to seeing a beautiful garden. The hot houses were not open but what you could see looked basically dead.

Beautiful garden with lots of plant species. It's a shame the indoors section was closed but it was nice outside too. Most of the plants had a tag and a sign with the species and family name on it. Helps a lot with studying plant species and families.

A very nice and quiet place to relax and maybe read a book. Plant variety appears to be somewhat limited out of season.

My favourite place in Antwerp! Between the crowded streets and noisy roads you can find some peace in this small but oh so beautiful garden, full of different species of flowers and plants. Enough benches to take a rest or on a nice afternoon perfect for picnicking on the grass. There is a small creek where you can see some fish swimming peacefully between the stones, aswell there is this very cute restaurant which is specialised in desserts or visit the nice hotel across the garden which is also a must see.

A beautiful garden very close to the center. It has a lot of type of plants and trees. You can go here and enjoy the sun laying on the grass.

My favorite resting spot in the hustle and bustle of Antwerp’s market and fashion district. Everything a botanical garden needs: beautiful plants (some with their own poem!), peace and quiet, and seating. There is no entry fee but the garden can get crowded in good weather.
