If you travel to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, strongly consider taking a trip 20 miles outside of town and visiting this magnificent archeological site. I highly recommend taking the tour with Albert Coffee, who has been involved in excavating and researching this site since 2004. He is an absolute wealth of knowledge and very entertaining. Because these ruins are at 7000 feet of elevation and the tour is approximately two hours over hilly terrain, wear comfortable shoes and you should be in halfway decent shape.

Very cool place to visit!! *Just make sure you have a way back home. When trying to get back to the town center, we were unable to find an Uber & had to call for a taxi. Also, bring more than one bottle of water for 2 people, and a hat! And the guide spoke Spanish only. But, still, we had an amazing time!

This is a place that far exceeds what you would expect from information available about it online. Wikipedia doesn't begin to do it justice, nor does its own self-promotional material. Every few hours, a guided tour departs from a visitor's center. The timing of these is not publicized, but I know from experience there is one at 1:00pm, and another at 3:30pm. A mini-bus takes visitors within a kilometer of the main site, and you walk the rest of the way in order to keep the main site pristine. The canyon (cañada) along the way is breathtakingly beautiful. The actual tour begins by following a maze of trails where pottery shards in situ can be seen, along with other ceremonial sites. The highlights are the buildings themselves, each distinctly different from the others. The main pyramid is the 8th wonder of the ancient world. Very imposing. The guide allows visitors to climb to the very top, and to linger there, for what can be considered the summit of the day. All told, the tour is a satisfying 2 1/2 hours, and you never feel rushed. Along with Jardin, and El Charco del Ingenio, Cañada de la Virgen, is among San Miguel de Allende's 3 must sees.

Tours are at the hottest time of the day 11am -3pm. Very few people speak English. No AC in the bus. But in general a nice experience, just not very designed as tourist place how some US tourists would expect.

Amazing place. Not too busy during the week. Fair entrance fee, which included parking, toilets, tour guide and bus shuttle service. Shuttle doesn't go all the way to the site though. The last stretch is walked with the group. There are places to take a short rest and get shade. Walk takes about 20 minutes. Tour itself is another 30-45 minutes. they show you everything and explain the meanings and history. it is one of the last pyramids in Mexico where you are allowed to walk up, so it's a once in a lifetime experience. if it gets busier they will probably stop allowing it. at the entrance there is also a small stand for food and drinks. the lady there makes amazing quesadillas. all self made. all in all an amazing experience. Also very close to San Miguel (20 minute drive) so you can combine both.

One of the most interesting and informative tours I've ever been on. Albert Coffee is a national treasure. Fascinating place to visit, probably the number one activity to do in San Miguel de Allende.

An incredible experience! Not to be missed. Our guide, Albert Coffee, was fun and informative. The pyramids and related structures were fascinating, and we had a lovely lunch once we came down from the pyramid. You can CLIMB it, and although it looks daunting at first, we all made it.

Well-preserved archaeological site. No vendors, just nature and history. Be sure to go with guide Albert Coffee to get the most of your visit. They arrange everything and provide transportation from town and back.

Really incredible place to visit. If you are in San Miguel visiting, this is worth the trip to check out. It's about a 2.5 hour guided tour and you have to walk about 1.5km to get there after the bus drops you off. There is also some elevation when walking so account for that and bring lots of water. I took a ton of photos and wish I had taken even more.

This is one of Guanajuato's hidden gems. It's amazing, not crowded, and something to experience. I suggest going in the morning or mid day to allow for a 2.5hr tour. The last one is at 4pm and is a shorter version. The guide is amazing and very helpful. If this site speaks to you, consider visiting some of the other archeological sites in Guanajuato.

It was an amazing activity about 30 minutes outside of San Miguel de Allende. The archaeological site and history told by our guide, was very informative. This is a great way to get away from the city and enjoy the countryside at a leisurely pace.

Nice day to spend a few hours. Yhe guide was really informative and friendly but it was in Spanish. If you are turning up without a tour, then check times for the tour, otherwise you'll be hanging around as they only leave every 2h.

La Canada de la Virgen has a wonderful museum with artifacts and the history of the site. The guides are friendly and informative. However,, the website has a handicap accessibility logo indicating that it is accessible for those with disabilities but this is only partially true! The museum is handicapped accessible with ramps but the actual archaeological site where the ruins are located is a difficult walk and impossible for a wheelchair. I have a disability that limits the distances I can walk and the terrain I can safely navigate, due to amputations. The over 1 km walk up cobblestone path to a rocky climb over a hill and down steppe slope eventually leads to a flat terrain. Thankfully my husband was with me he went ahead and took pictures but I have to say honestly it dampened the experience for me. I felt 😞, I would not have attempted the walk if I had a clearer understanding of how difficult it would be.Perhaps a difficulty level warning but definitely the web site needs to specify that it only the museum that is accessible. It was still beautiful.

A magical experience given by a brilliant archeologist who has worked on the site for over 20 years. An impressive amount of knowledge presented in a digestible manner with humor and precision. This tour was a one of a kind experience, due to its seclusion, there are driveways and gates for private accessibility only. We were able to climb & descend the steps to the main site, a truly spectacular opportunity. After tour we were given chance to enjoy homemade tacos and cold drinks that were vegan and gluten free friendly💚 We were then given access to the museum. That concluded the tour with more stories of their artifacts and findings of this truly mystical site. English speaking friendly tour. A large brim hat for shade and comfortable walking shoes are a must.

Interesting historical site in Guanajuato state, near San Miguel de Allende. The tour guide speaks in Spanish, which we were not yet fluent in, but the museum has some English translation. There is a 15 minute bus ride, and a 20 minute uphill walk to the site, about a mile and a half round trip on foot. Plan on spending about 2-3 hours there. It may be a good idea to call ahead to find out the bus schedule. On the weekday we went, there was a two hour wait between buses, if we had arrived 5 minutes later, we would have had a two hour wait. The path is made of stones and dirt. It would be challenging if you are not in shape or not used to the altitude. There was no apparent access for people with movement disabilities, but there is a museum to visit if you are unable to make the trip with the rest of your party. There is a snack stand and restroom at the visitor center, but no facilities once you get on the bus.

Very long, hot, up hill walk to the site. The site is only 12% explored, so small by comparison to other, older digs. Does have the advantage of no vendors or tourist traps on site. Main parking area and museum has bathrooms, water, and a local woman offers tacos for sale after the tour. Delicious.

Great site. You can only enter with a guide (and they drive you to the site from the parking lot). The entrance fee and tour is $70mxn and takes about 2 .5 hours Mostly walking as the drive only takes you to the site. My tour was in Spanish. They left on the hour. Some people have said they occasionally have English tours but you might want to call ahead to check out when.

Really nice place to visit if you’re in SMA for a while. Entrance fee is 70 pesos pp. this includes transport to the site (not from SMA) and a Spanish speaking guide. I do think it’s hard if you don’t speak Spanish, as basically everything the guide says will be in Spanish. I don’t know if they speak English, but it didn’t seem like that. The tour takes 2,5 hours and will be quite hot if you go during the day.

Tip: if you have transportation, it is better to get there and pay the entrance, the tours are very expensive from San Miguel, the visits are every hour for contingency, the last one leaves no later than 3, they open at 10 AM, bring sunscreen or something with which Covering the sun hits a lot, and the tour lasts approximately 2 hours by contingency (Original) Muy bonito lugar con una historia interesante y peculiar su descubrimiento recomiendo la vuelta allá y tener buena condición si está pesado la caminata . This place is awesome. A few caveats: There are hoops to jump through to be allowed to see this site. The pyramid is located on private land that was donated to the federal government. They limit the amount of people that are allowed to visit at one time in order to preserve the site. You have to be escorted, either by a federal employee that works at the site, or by a tour guide. You have to take a tour bus from the visitor center to the site, and they run hourly. It is the only pyramid in Mexico you can climb! If you want to learn about this site, don’t bother going unless you get a tour guide and I highly recommend Albert Coffee’s tour - he is an archaeologist and was actually a part of the dig that excavated the site! He is very knowledgeable and it was incredible to learn about the amazing history of this area. Five stars for him. If we didn’t have a tour guide, I would give this a 1 star, because as we were finishing the tour and walking to the bus pickup site, the employee, Margarit, that was escorting the other small group that was at the site at the same time, took her group ahead of us and told the driver of the bus to leave our group behind, so our group was stranded for an hour waiting for the bus to return. It was extremely hot and sunny, and most of us had run out of water by that time since the tour was over. Extremely unprofessional, and distressing to the group that was mostly people over the age of 60.

Amazing archeological site, recently discovered and still under excavation, full of astronomical knowledge from the Otomí culture. Its a short walk guided by park personnel. Avoid to go during mid day because of the temperature.

It’s a long drive and a long walk. The site is really big and fairly well preserved. It’s amazing that this was discovered in someone’s farm and they are planning on excavating more in the future. Very peaceful and beautiful. Definitely a great experience for the explorer.

Took the tour with Albert coffee. He is very knowledgeable of the site and history of the area. The site itself is amazing. Very secluded, so prepare for a little hike. But this is a positive as it is not commercialized whatsoever. My teens enjoyed every minute of it, but especially getting to the top of the pyramid. we will probably go back in a few years as they are still discovering new findings. Highly recommend.
