The
Cape
Florida
Lighthouse
is
a
historic
landmark
located
at
the
southern
tip
of
Key
Biscayne
in
Miami-Dade
County,
Florida.
It
was
built
in
1825
and
is
the
oldest
standing
structure
in
Miami-Dade
County.
The
lighthouse
was
originally
built
to
guide
ships
around
the
Florida
Reef,
which
starts
near
Key
Biscayne
and
extends
southward
a
few
miles
offshore
of
the
Florida
Keys.
The
lighthouse
has
a
long
and
storied
history.
It
has
survived
hurricanes,
erosion,
and
even
an
attack
by
Seminole
Indians.
In
1836,
a
group
of
Seminole
Indians
attacked
the
lighthouse
and
its
keeper,
John
Thompson.
Thompson
was
killed,
but
his
wife
and
children
were
able
to
escape.
The
lighthouse
was
eventually
rebuilt
and
continued
to
serve
as
a
beacon
for
ships
until
it
was
decommissioned
in
1947.
In
1966,
the
lighthouse
was
acquired
by
the
state
of
Florida
and
is
now
part
of
Bill
Baggs
Cape
Florida
State
Park.
Visitors
can
tour
the
lighthouse
and
learn
about
its
history.
The
lighthouse
is
also
a
popular
spot
for
fishing,
bird
watching,
and
hiking.
Here
are
some
of
the
things
you
can
do
at
the
Cape
Florida
Lighthouse:
*
Take
a
tour
of
the
lighthouse
and
learn
about
its
history.
*

from
the

of
the
lighthouse.
*
