Nice oasis of calm style in the center of Amsterdam. Nice interiors but tbf way overpriced for what they are. I am a massive passionate of historic interiors and I managed to see entire house in about 30 mins. The stables at the end of the garden could be arranged in a more interesting way. There seems to be no real story told while you walk inside the house just old furniture in the rooms... a little bit dead for my liking. The only thing I found outstanding was the wallpapers in 2 bedrooms upstairs. The rest really really average.

This museum was recommended by someone who lives in Amsterdam and conducts private tours. He suggested it because it is one of the few old houses that has a large back garden that extends from one street to the street behind. It dates to the 1600s and does have an impressive back garden and coach house. It is a fine example of how wealthy Dutch lived. The Van Loons were with the Dutch spice trading companies. I only give it a 3 star rating because the special exhibit was installed the rooms in such a way that the rooms were totally obscured behind special exhibit temporary walls. So it was impossible to get a really full picture of how the Van Loons lived. The exhibit was to illustrate the lives of blacks who served the Van Loons. Worthy and needed perspective but poorly executed. The signage throughout the museum was hard to read-small font and too light. I do not know the cost to enter as it was covered in our IAMmsterdam access card, which I recommend purchasing while touring the city.

Fascinating museum that you are unlikely to need to book in advance, unlike most places in Amsterdam. Normally the exhibition informs the visitor about the historic Dutch family that lived here. When we visited we were informed on arrival that there was a temporary exhibition reflecting on the "people behind the wealth". This was incredibly well done and gave a voice to the slaves and servants that served the family. It was produced in collaboration with descendants of these people. It did obscure a lot of the normal exhibits but as we were warned about this before paying we really weren't bothered. There's also a beautiful courtyard garden which we enjoyed greatly.

This house is owned by the family that confounded the VOC. Come visit if you wanna see some European high-class old fancy building with a garden.

A not so knonw museum that could be considered a hidden gem in Amsterdam. If you want to travel in time in the wealthy side of Amsterdam of the old times this is a great example. Spare a bit of your time and enjoy a relaxing visit in this little palace.

Obama should have gone to Willet-Holthuysen Museum instead of this house. The museum lacks character and information. Though the house is beautiful, it is mainly decorated with portraits of the family. The rooms and gardens are frequently rented for events and meetings which makes me wonder what their business model is. I compare this museum with the Willet-Holthuysen Museum (which is closeby) because it also showcases a mansion from the 18th century. The Willet-Holthuysen Museum museum has a free and highly detailed audio tour with many interesting historical facts and trivia that make for an immersive experience.... along with beautiful art that isn't focused on portraits. The Van Loon has a small booklet with a few facts. If you don't have a museum card, It feels that at Willet-Holthuysen Museum you get more bang for your buck..... Museum Van Loon runs a distant second in my opinion.

This is more than a museum - it is a house with incredible style. Beauty is in every stap here: interior, household items, portraits, decor. Even the servants' costumes are beautiful. The atmosphere is amazing - it is a bright house with wonderful energy. It's nice to be here and you don't want to leave. Probably happy people lived here for a longtime. I'll definitely come back.

Such a beautiful museum. Well worth visiting Museum Van Loon to see how the upper class of Amsterdam used to live. You can learn more about this prominent family and the house itself with the printed guide and Dutch/English material in each room. The courtyard behind the house is amazing and makes the visit even better! You should come tour this museum!

Very interesting museum to learn more about how high-end, historic Amsterdam houses look like from the inside and what’s behind those canal houses.

(Translated by Google) Very nice! Everything is in perfect condition. The house lives when you walk through it. As if the people are still walking there. Definitely recommended to view. The garden is beautiful and then the coach house with a sleigh of the children that comes straight from a fairy tale. Nice gift banned families van Loon to share this with us. There will be many tourists, but we as Amsterdammers have also enjoyed the splendor. (Original) Heel mooi!

The museum is located in a canalside house. The highest point of this visit is his garden as well as seeing a house designed on the 17th century. The museum regularly organize contemporary art exhibitions besides the Van Loon family lifestyle and historyexhibition.

A fantastic well preserved Amsterdam Canal House from the gold days of Dutch empire. The preservation is superb. The details, the paintings, the furniture, everything is so good placed that you feel you back in time. The inner garden is very interesting to walk around. There isn't a guided tour unfortunately, but they have explanation notes. Is a museum, but you can also use it for private dinners or events. I've been here for a dinner with the USA ambassador for example.

This is a pleasant and enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours, but I don't think it's a "must see" as the content is quite limited. The highlights for me were the Garden Room, which is small but lovely, and finding out about Widow Johanna Borski, an astute investor who bailed out the Dutch National Bank at its start. I would recommend a brief wander through the small garden to the café in the Coach House that does beverages and very tasty apple cake.

It was interesting enough given it was based on slavery. The exhibits referred to it but not quite as reflective as some items in the Rijksmuseum. It could also do with more furniture! I’m sorry for the 1* reviews, be a respectful visitor and you’ll be fine.

This elegant 17th-century canal house turned museum is a must-visit for those seeking to immerse themselves in the history, art, and opulence of Amsterdam's past. One of the highlights of Museum Van Loon is its exquisite interior. The beautifully preserved rooms are a testament to the refined taste and grandeur of the Van Loon family, who were prominent Amsterdam regents. The museum's period furniture, fine art, and decorative objects offer a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Dutch elite during the Golden Age, providing a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the time. Included in the Dutch Museum card.

The old woman at the front desk is seriously rude. I would be cautious of taking photographs in the house/garden as she will scream at you. She even made comments about my partner’s appearance insisting that the van Loon family would be sickened by her… it’s the 21st century and couldn’t care less if some stiff upper lipped family or their ancient receptionist had any opinion of us. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was racially provoked. Honestly ruined the experience by her unprovoked comments. Guess jealousy stings. The house and garden itself is really nice (although there is scaffolding and construction in the garden which slightly ruined it). However beware that the van Loon family profited massively from slavery and colonialism and some of the exhibitions attempted to justify it. Also, the entry is quite steep.

An amazing moment back in time in this somptuous typical canal house. No need for a guided tour if you are not interested deeply into the family history, you can see how this rich aristocrat were living. The garden is also beautiful, and you can even see how the family got so rich as so many others thanks to an additional exhibition on slavery in another building at the back of the garden. It was worth it just to satisfy my curiosity on what were those canal houses hiding.

If you want to see this 17th Century Dutch merchant's house, wait until after 24 August 2023. At present an exhibition about Dutch colonialism and slavery covers the interior walls of the 8 major rooms with dark screens and hides the art and decoration you have come to see, in this case inspired by the 'Miniaturist', the fascinating novel by Jessie Burton. It´s a great shame they could not have shown the two stories side by side in a different way which does not obliterate the art of one of them.

We stumbled upon the museum and decided to visit. I'm glad we did! It was a neat look at how the upper classes lived. I appreciate that the museum has also put in the effort to acknowledge the pain and suffering that the duth east India company inflicted on ensalved peoples. Signage through the museum describing items wasn't always clear, though.

Want to see what it was like to live in Amsterdam during the 1600's? Then have a stop here. I was surprised by how little information was provided, which makes me think that it may still be in use for personal lives outside of museum hours?? The rooms are fantastic and beautiful, very elaborate. The garden is very nice to rest in, and you can stop at the cafe. I'm not sure it is worth going out of your way to see unless this perspective intrigues you.

The house was designed in 1672 by Adriaan Dortsman, the famous Dutch architect known for having created the Ronde Lutherse Kerk. There are four sculptures on top of the house, representing Ceres, Mars, Minerva and Vulcan.[2] The interior of the house has been renovated, and appears reminiscent of its look in the 18th-century, with wood paneling and stucco work. The upstairs features several paintings of Roman sports figures and a bedroom that is decorated with a Romanticism period painting of Italy. The house also has fake bedroom doors: the 18th-century owners desired to have symmetry in the interior design so they painted the real bedroom doors to match the walls and fake doors to appear real in a location where one would assume a door would be.

Interesting to see how the ‘other half’ lived and hear some of the family history. The rooms are well preserved and the garden is stunning on a sunny day. A bit of a shame that the coach house no longer houses the coaches and there was an art exhibition of family portraits instead. I was intrigued and wanted to see the former servants quarters as there are clearly two other floors. It turns out that the van Loon family reside on these two floors and it’s accessed via a secret hidden door and concealed staircase. I wonder if they sneak into the big house in the evening?

This has to be the nicest historic mansion on the grand canals of Amsterdam. I've visited this mansion several times, and it's never crowded or too busy. I noticed quite a few people come in and go straight to the café in the coach house on the other side of the beautiful back garden. A mansion from the Golden Age, multiple generations have lived in this home, with lots of portraits over the centuries. If you're to visit only one Golden Age mansion, this is the place to visit. On the belle étage, (the main floor) there's a gorgeous formal dining room, a large salon and 2 other sitting rooms. On the second floor, there are 3 bedrooms and a sitting room. The basement contains the kitchen, wine cellar, and there's a room with a tv presenting the history of the mansion in Dutch with English subtitles. Through the basement, there's a door to access the back garden and the coach house which still smells of horses and is now a lovely cafe. Highly recommended. My Museumkaart covered admission but if I had to pay, I would have, it's that nice.

A beautiful place with a garden and a historical collection of divine paintings and artworks🏞🖼🖼 🌟 Didn't have a chance to "indulge" in historical excurse, but could enjoy a cup of coffee and an amazing courtyard during my mindful break 🧘‍♀️. Was lucky enough to become a spy and witness preparations + a general rehearsal💃( I do believe so!) before the final Saturday try-out & Sunday premiere of the opera Va Pensiero: The Euphrates and her Stories. Promised to return for more enlightment, a pop-up dinner, debate, and positive vibes! 💫 Definitely worth stopping over and coming back! 👌

Lovely old home on the canal which gives you an insight on how it was in a rich family. This home is beautiful but what i missed was more insight about the family. And more explanation about all the portraits hanging there and to know who is who in the family. They have a huge collection but i did not get as much info as when i visited the Willet-Holthuysen house. Also i did not see storage nor were we offered any audio tour.

I would not recommend this museum. They covered most of the interior in black fabric and removed most of the furniture as they were doing an exhibit on enslaved people. I was very disappointed and wish I demanded my money back. I visited in April 2023

A very interesting museum showcasing a traditional Amsterdam house of a wealthy family throughout the centuries (1600-1800). Also nice garden and temporary exhibitions in the part on the back. Someone is probably still living there at the top floor, and you can alsonrent the dining room for events.

Historical residence of the Van Loon family, co-founders of the VOC, but there's a plot twist, the residence has lots of historical elements around slavery but the way it's put in the story is quite random and confusing, so I give it at 4/5. It's small and if you are a meticulous tourist you'll get to enjoy it!

  • 1/5 Linda L. 11 months ago on Google
It was a beautiful museum, offering a unique opportunity to visit one of the characteristic canale houses and learn about Dutch history and culture. But now they have willingly ruined it by covering the entire interior with black panels and plaster messages all over them instead. This is not an exaggeration - it is literally what they did and called it an "exhibition". There is no point in visiting this museum anymore, sadly.

Spent some very quality time in here to have a feel of how Dutch aristocrats live in the old days. The place is quite small yet it is very worth going there to look at how the Dutch value art. Although it looks similar to British Aristocrat yet they have better taste in some aspects. The cafe within the museum is also another highlight of this place because it is so calm and great to have a quick tea/coffee session before leaving or continuing your visit.

Small and beautiful museum showing how a family history has mixed with the city one.

It is a very beautiful place. The stuff are friendly! Taking pictures are accepted. I had fun very much, thank you. I come from Japan and I do not speak Dutch, but if you speak English, everything goes smoothly. The payment has to be done through a QR code and credit card. Why not 5, but 4: A bit expensive. A little. The stuff guy with glasses and a green shirt from POLO was reading a book, sitting in a chair, and I really liked how beautiful it looked. This might be irrelevant to the museum itself, but the posture, fashion, his hairstyle, the art the match created was so beautiful that I wanted to take photos of him (I did not).

Really beautiful, almost like a castle. You can see that the family puts a lot of effort into keeping this a gem!

A treasure inside of Amsterdam. It is not a well known museum but definitely worth it. It's bigger than you might think and have some important statues
