This museum has answers to many questions about what life was like under German rule during WWII. It gives a great impression of the inventive ways that the Dutch used to resist oppression and smuggle contraband or weapons in seemingly everyday objects. The desperate days of the Hunger winter in the last year of occupation are also very prominent. My grandparents had "onderduikers" too for most of the war (people hiding from German oppression) and my dad went into hiding to avoid forced labor in Germany, so this museum struck a chord that hot home in so many ways.

A really nice museum, I wasn't expecting to have so much to learn. I read somewhere you could easily visit it in 2 hours but I'd say something between 3/4 hours is the ideal. We couldn't see everything as much as we'd like because of it. It has a lot of interactive points. Can only recommend it!

I had an unsettling experience at this museum a few years ago (2018). To echo other reviewers, I expected more information about the resistance and tributes to those heroes in particular. Those stories felt like they were lost in the shuffle. As if that weren't disappointing enough, my visit was at the same time as a scavenger hunt where kids on a school field trip were running and making a ton of noise. It struck me as disrespectful. When it was time for me to leave, I tried to tell museum staff that it was distracting with the kids running around and barely absorbing the contents. I was told to mind my own business instead of telling the Dutch how to run their affairs. (I'm from the U.S. and my grandfather was saved by the Dutch resistance.) It was a jarring experience, and while I take the point that activities can be a great way for the younger generations to learn, this felt like it crossed the line into disrespect. I'll just add that the museum staff made a snarky comment about how most of the school kids were not ethnically Dutch, and that I should just be happy they came to the museum at all. Talk about stereotyping...

We did not have this on our list of places to see, but I recommend everyone go there. We all really absorbed the information and our girls (10 and 11) really learned a lot. The conversation we had during and afterwards was insightful and reflective. The museum does a fantastic job with a junior area, our girls worked through the workbooks and followed the 4 lives of kids during that time. We all learned tons. Recommend giving yourself about 1.5 hours to cover it all.

Museum displays are well set up and organized with their helpful audio guide provided. Visitors will learn a lot of Dutch WW2 history and the impact of Nazi resistance throughout the war and daily life. You'll need two hours or more (lots of standing)

Simply incredible.Very interactive and educational. At the register they give you a little device that provides you with a voice guided tour.In every third/fourth room there’s a short video clip on a constant loop. All of those short movies show you,in order of the timeline of events, the history and struggles of jews in the 20th century. The museum not only tells about Jew History in The Netherlands, but lots about WW2 as well and the Dutch-Indonesian colonies. There are depicted stories of jews, dutch, germans, soldiers, prisoners, escapees. The museum overall is small, but it personally took me 2h. 40m. to view EVERYTHING and take it all in.Although everyone says 1h or so is enough,i don’t think so,after all you’re there to learn and experience, not to sightsee. The staff(which is only present on the register,as you’re digitally guided)was extremely friendly and polite, they spoke perfect english and offered me a guide in 7+ languages. There’s a locker room space where you can put your belongings - you can’t enter with anything on you.I went on a Tuesday at 4pm and there were plenty of people, but it was easy to pass through and get around.I wouldn’t recommend visiting on a holiday or a weekend though,as the place is narrow and small itself and a lot of people bumping into each other would be an inconvenience. No pre-reservation needed,I bought my ticket directly from the register, but I’d check the availability before going in. I definitely recommend. It’s a museum with a lot of work, dedication and respect put in

Well done Museum! €7,5 student 2:10h visit Really loved listening and reading about the Dutch people fighting for their freedom, the freedom of their Jewish citizens. A few interactive displays, some funny stories, plenty maps and pictures helped to bring history to life. Totally recommended :-)

Overall it is a good museum, but honestly when it comes to the Second World War, the German museums are much more detailed and informative. Not to say that the resistance museum was bad. At the start of the museum they have an introductory film which gives a short overview of the museum inside and I would recommend that film to anyone who is visiting there. The museum takes about two hours to complete and cover most of the important aspects. One of the exhibits that I liked was a detailed map of the Jews living in Amsterdam. This same map is also in display I'm Auschwitz. Please take a moment to reflect about that map and what it lead to. The museum has three main themes, fight, collaborate or do nothing and it gives examples of people who belong to each of those categories. This makes one think about the real circumstances of the Second World War and in a way (for me at least) justifies why the Dutch people did what they did. Overall I was happy that I visited the museum and I would recommend it anyone who in interested in reading WWII history.

A very unique and memorable experience! The museum is contemporary made and therefore it's so easy to learn facts on history of the Netherlands. The space is not overcrowded so you can explore the space at your own pace. I can't recommend it more!!!

A really informative and interesting museum about WW2, the resistance and colonialism. I liked the focus on individuals’ stories. All available in English, very high tech and interactive (I believe it’s just been renovated). Would highly recommend, I’d say give yourself at least 2 hours to get the most of the experience.

A very good presentation of how life was during the Nazis occupation. Audio equipment in many languages allows you to go at your own pace and examine the material while listening to the script. The museum portrays the challenges the Dutch people faced, both the adults and the children. May that terror NEVER be repeated.

A very important museum which if explored correctly will take about 1.5 hours. The staff are very helpful and the audio gadget means there's no need to read everything, you can just listen to it. This museum is informative to the modern Dutch experience and as someone with extensive knowledge of WW2, Tales of bravery from the Dutch resistance were plentiful and intriguing.

If you are interested in WW2, you will find this museum fascinating. I didn't know much about the Dutch experience of the war but the museum set out the conflicting approaches by the public in a very understandable way. The fact that much of the war seemed near normal is chilling, particularly the film of Jewish people getting on trains to "go to work in Germany"🥺

One of the best WW2 museums I've been to, better than Berlin. Very fascinating to see how much the Netherlands was impacted... this information isn't discussed much in other exhibits. This museum excels in providing information through personal stories of both the good guys and the bad. Very cool interactive displays as well. I easily spent two hours in here with the free guided headset. You must use one!

Wow. Bigger, more thorough than I anticipated. Extremely well done and immersive museum. You can spend over 2 hours here easily. If you know how the Netherlands entered the war, you can move ahead to see more Resistance-specific displays. Too many cool things to note. Add this to your list.

(Translated by Google) Fantastic is not an assessment criterion for such an impressive piece of history. I prefer to say: impressive. The museum demands prior knowledge. Without it, the images remain either touching or soulful. For him / her who knows more, this museum is a short and powerful summary in words and pictures. I am from 1941. I still carry deep impressions of war violence with me today.

Worth the visit did it before going across the street to the zoo. Could spend one to two and a half hours depending on speed. Spent just over two hours and really took my time. Good museum to see with maybe the maritime museum or the zoo. It won’t take long and it’s maybe a little pricy for how quickly you go through but for a niche museum I expected it. The special exhibit they had was really worth it, you follow a group of artist as they planed and burned down the records office. Gives you an interesting perspective and try’s to put you in their mindset. The museum is set up as a self guide, so you have a little box that you can activate at certain points along the way and gain more specific information. It’s a small museum focusing on a small area and period of time (primarily Amsterdam and The Netherlands) It is a interesting look into an area during the war I was completely unaware of but had significant events occurring effecting many lives.

Informative experience with lots of displays ranging from many topics related to world war 2 and the Netherlands. Almost every display is interactive with lots of memorabilia from the time, there is even the ability to listen to the displays in whatever language you choose. Staff was also very nice at the entrance

A place where those brave people who worked in the resistance during WWII are rightfully honored. The exhibition itself is set up as a dark journey through the fearful years; you reach the light at the liberation. Very educational, also for children: lest we forget... One quote that made the biggest impression on me is: "Being a father of two daughters and even though it could cost me my life, I choose to do the good work, for my children best had a dead, brave father than an alive and cowardly one."

A very nice museum about the resistance during World War 2 in the Netherlands. The museum has a very nice audio guide. You walk from 1940 to 1945 when visiting the museum. The way the history is personalised in the museum is well done and allows you to see the history through the eyes of different people. The museum has several well made videos and also has a small town for kids. The museum also seems to be accessible for blind and deaf people, with videos with a deaf translator and signs on the ground for blind people. The museum accepts museum card. Parking closeby is difficult. There is a tram stop less than 100 m from the museum. Highly recommended to visit!

We visited after a recommendation. It's a really good exhibit with a lot of interesting bits and pieces but it's the stories that really make this place. Really important to hear and see but can be a bit 'heavy' so maybe something to do earlier in the day. To really do this justice I think you need a couple of hours to follow everything and not rush around. We visited on a weekend and it was busy but still plenty of room to move about and see everything.

It is a very informative and beautifully decorated museum. If you want to see and read everything here, you can easily spend three hours. All the text is supported with audio (in multiple languages). Moreover, the entire museum is fully decorated with imagery covering all aspects of the war and the resistance within it. The information was also very complete, from personal stories to explanations about deportation and the organizational structure of both the occupiers and the resistance fighters.

It's so much information you get and then it's helpful to walk in the right direction to put it into perspective and context. The individual people and groups in Amsterdam during the war are given names in this museum by the amount of personal materials. Numbers become people. The numbers become faces. (Translated by Google) This museum is a beautiful museum about the wartime in the Netherlands in general and Amsterdam in particular. If I had to rate this museum only on the main part I would get three stars, because it is a lot of reading and shows little real stuff. That gets boring and I catch myself walking through the museum faster and faster. But we were told that this section will be refreshed soon. The reason for the fourth star is the truly fantastic children's section, where the war is experienced from four different children, complete with the "houses" they lived in and objects related to them. That grabs you and makes you understand what human-degrading things have happened. You should not miss that part.

Very interesting and thought provoking museum, with a lot more to show you than you might think, also not far from other typical tourist spots

Very interesting! it has so much information and it's very interactive. It should take at least 4 hours to see all of it, I needed more time!

Go and visit this museum! And do it before they are closed for renovation (may23) because it is real good. Recommend!! I especially like the question you get to ask yourself: what would you have done?

Although the topic is heave, the museum made an effort to depict how people were affected. Especially the children's exposition highlights the situation of different people's vantage points during the war in a very lightly way without downplaying the ugliness and hardship of the war. The exposition is highly interactive which keeps children engaged. Even our six years old, who after several hours still didn't want to leave. Very well done museum!

A very enjoyable and informative museum on the Netherlands in WW2. Very accessible to English speakers with good audio guide.

Small but packed with information. The free audio controller can be used with corded headphones, for easier use. (Multiple languages available). Friendly and helpful staff

Wonderful and thought provoking museum. There are self guided audiotours and texts in both English and Dutch. The museum design makes you feel like you are secretively observing many things, though small windows and clever displays. You could quickly peruse, but this is definitely a visit that benefits from reading all the plaques. 1.5 hours was not enough time, would recommend planning about 3 hours to visit.

We had a very nice tour throughout the city in a very old tram. They showed us multiple places in Amsterdam that where involved with world war 2. The museum itself is closed for a while because of a new collection and they are rebuilding the inside. Edit: Today I've taken a look inside the rebuild museum and it was a very educational tour. Unfortunately it was a bit crowded so the small exhibit rooms were quite full and it was sometimes difficult to take a look at some artifacts and stories. Still it was a very good experience with stories from all sides which is very good imho because it makes you understand how people get drawn into terrible things

Spent quite a bit of time here, very realistic and informative historical accounts of life during a time of life or death. The interactive audio tour was excellent. The introduction video seems outdated

well presented and explained museum about Dutch resistance during WWII. The audio devices worked well for us English speakers. There was a lot to see, read, and absorb.

Really excellent museum, I highly recommend taking advantage of the audio tour available in multiple languages. Close to 3 hours seems about right.

I can't recommend this museum enough. It has clearly had some investment and is all interactive. There is a great mix of media from photographs, original items, text and an audio guide. I spent 3 hours here and was really moved by the exhibits. This place is grossly underrated and should be top of everyone's list.

Out of the way, but worth the trip to the eastern part of Centrum. Content rich, well presented museum. We did it in ~2.5 hours which felt about right. Content hits all sides of the situation from sympathizer, to Jewish victims, to resistance, to the vast silent majority. Lots of personal stories and original artifacts. Be prepared for lots of self analysis. What would I do?

It’s a beautiful day to visit here in Verztsmuseum Amsterdam- Netherland Museum. I love to figure out the exactly hours it takes from New York to Netherland Museum. It take 9hours:45m to get to Netherland Museum by Plane ✈️.

Just finished up with the museum. I thought it was incredibly well done. Easy to walk through and follow the timeline of events. You can take as much or as little time as you wish. I did basically everything and it took about 2 hours. By far one of my favorite museums. Very interactive and hands on while keeping you engaged with different ways of information. Read, listen, or watch and even participate in activities. Would 100% recommend.

It's been a while since I've been this impressed with a museum. The permanent exhibition is extremely well researched and put together. Basically, the war is broken up into a series of shorter time periods, each of which you get an overview of in the form of a roughly 3-minute film, followed by a series of exhibits providing more details and stories about individuals if you want to know more. I completely lost track of time and spent hours in here. If you have an interest in history, this is a must see.

Fantastic exhibition, however it doesn’t give credit to Eleanor Roosevelt’s contributions to the Declaration of Human Rights in the decolonization conclusion. That was my only con, but the resistance was very broad and only 1/3 of the Dutch collaborators were prosecuted for aiding the German occupation. Fears of racism are still present in Dutch culture. Particularly within law enforcement and fire fighting circles who refuse to answer the cries of help from minority communities. This particular group is called the Brotherhood. Viva La resistance!

This museum must be better promoted, it is mega interesting, but be prepared to spend the whole day here because you have to read it listen to every single thing.

What a fabulous interactive museum on the Dutch Resistance during World War II. We spent 2 hours here. Close to the zoo and has public transportation connections near by.

Very nice experience. You can learn about the Dutch resistance against the Nazis during the second world war in an immersive environment.

This was an incredibly moving to experience. The documentation of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands was detailed, sometimes graphic, but never failed to be informative. I'd recommend this to anyone. Whole section devoted to the experiences of 4 real children from different backgrounds.

Well presented museum with excellent history from multiple perspectives. They have the typical audio boxes to hold to your ear. I noticed that they have an audio plug on the bottom so maybe you can plug your own earphones into them. Don't know if that will work or not but holding those boxes to your head for two hours is uncomfortable.

It’s awesome! This place really got my attention for hours. You can read many individual histories and testimonies of different normal people doing what they thought was right to do, at that time. Strong values, protecting people, and resistance to oppression is what you see on each of those histories. This is the type of place you need to go in these times when fascism is showing its ugly face every where!
