It's a nice place where you can learn some history of Holland. I understood that every Sunday they will have a small theatrical act, especially for children.

A wonderful experience and even till now an interesting topic. Watermanagement, how to manage the water during these dry summers and wet winters. This historic museum explains how they empty the Haarlemmermeer, indeed empty a lake. Even this lake between Leiden and Amsterdam was an important and economic lake for the trade and business. But even in that time, 1600, they chose for the water management and the environment of The Netherlands. Do visit it and enjoy this still working museum.

Excellent accessibility. Lower exhibit tables, elevators, accessible toilets, great turning space everywhere, very friendly staff. All floors accessible. No accessible parking nearby, it is recommended to inform beforehand about parking or taxi services nearby.

A fascinating museum highlighting Dutch ingenuity at the dawn of the industrial age in pumping out a lake that was threatening nearby towns and cities. There are displays of massive pumps run by steam engines. Photos don't do this place justice.

When you visit this museum, only then will you begin to understand the ingenious pragmatism of the Dutch. All lovers of engineering and technology will get great pleasure from visiting this museum. The museum is dedicated to the history of hydroengineering in the Netherlands. This is one of the oldest mechanized pumping stations in the Netherlands, with the help of which the once large lake between Leiden, Haarlem and Amsterdam was drained. The pump itself still operates, but only as an exhibit, which allows you to understand the whole essence of this object. There was an experienced and excellent guide who told the story of this object in a very interesting and informative manner. I recommend definitely hiring a guide. And the museum should be listed in the schedule of all tourists as "must-visit".

If your a mechanical geek you need to see this and listen to the knowledgeable and friendly tour guide. This place is incredible let for the shear engineering feat that it was for the late 1800s. And such a beautiful easy bike ride from the train station with low traffic

How Holland was built... That's very nicely told in this engineer dream of a museum. It houses the largest steam engine ever built and the introductory animation film is a funny relic of the 1960s.

(Translated by Google) Nice that this old pumping station has been preserved. Not only as an engineer can one get excited about the building and the huge steam engine from the middle of the 19th century. You should definitely take the time to experience the steam engine in action. Even if the drive is now hydraulic. Note the many elaborate details, such as the iron spiral staircase. There was little going on due to Corona and you could look and take photos in peace.

Small but beautiful museum! Friendly staff.. they show you how the machines used to work (not with steam like before but still. Great to see! For the smaller kids they have a so called 'speurtocht' which was really nice for them (5 and 6 years old). Next to the museum is a recovery place to eat and drink (theehuis). Free parking too

Extremely interesting museum about the drainage of the Haarlemmermeer in the pump station that made it happen. Very well presented, the pump from 1850s (also the largest Cornish engine in the world) is still in function for showcase.

Nice Technology museum. Impressive steam engine. Unfortunately the steam engine has been decommissioned, but for demonstration purposes the pumps are electrically powered, which gives a good impression of the awesome water displacement capacity of this marvel of the beginning of the steam-powered chapter of our industrial age

Exciting place. There are some examples of historical steam powered machines and the most important exhibit - huge water pump that was powered by steam. It's a masterpiece of engineering. What amazed me the most is that it still works. Of course nowadays the mechanism is driven by electric motors but it's still looks amazing and even frighteningly. Thanks a lot for the tour and demonstration.

Excellent engineering for 1800's. On Sunday there is a small tour with actors (in Dutch), and the pump is activated (normally now with electric motor) and small tour is given like 30 min. Before 12 min movie about the Dutch problems with water and how did they fix it. Nice map of NL with zones of lakes that were fluded regularly.

Having used to go to prominent museums in other countries I was underwhelmed with the size of the museum and its collections. As other reviewers mentioned the English descriptions are lacking. Nevertheless we went with toddlers and they were enjoying very much the temporary exhibition: the search for tutankhamun! They could see the mummies too which was the main point of our visit, but it seems they were more impressed with the experience of crawling to a hidden chamber of tutankhamun. So that's a win! (Everything is in Dutch though)

Excellent exhibitions, especially when considering the price. Audiotours for adults or children in many languages included in the entrance fee, and ticket is valid all day - you can leave for lunch and come back later. Ancient Egypt, Greece and Italy are covered in the permanent exhibitions, with temporary exhibitions on other topics. Plan 3-4 hours for the full museum, or about 1 hour for just the highlights.

Very informative and since all the presented item are not common, it is getting better with every floor one visits. The plus is that since technology is at hand, you can get information through a portable gizmo on what if you connect a headset and scan the Codebars near to the exposed item on what you have interest to find out more, you can get a pretty elaborate and interesting description. It is a wheelchair accessible entrance and elevator to the top floors.

  • 5/5 Sophie K. 4 years ago on Google
This museum not only had a sense of adventure about it that would be perfect for families, but it was also educational. There was multiple sections of interest: Romans, Egyptians and more. If timed right, you can watch a captivating light show projected onto a replica Egyptian building. Lockers were provided for free for any additional bags or coats you may have on you. Perfect. Audio tours were free and could either be in Dutch or English. These were very clever in the way you scan an artifact and you could here the information about it. The shop was on the expensive side but had a variety of gifts that could be bought to remember your day out. Could be visited in a whole day if done in detail but can also be done in a couple of hours. I would recommend this museum of interesting artefacts to anybody interested in history, perhaps in particular eiple interested in the history of the Netherlands. Families would be suitable but be prepared for a lot of facts! Some school parties were there, but the museum was large enough for you not to be disturbed by anybody. Overall, I would definitely say, visit this museum! Enjoy, have fun, and maybe there will be a concert on when you go as well!

Nice museum, very friendly and helpful staff, great collection. Tip if you are in town and need a breather: You can have coffee next to a real Egyptian temple here (without entering the museum part of the building). The Temple of Taffeh was moved to Leiden when Egypt planned to build a dam in the Nile that would flood it. Worth a visit!

(Translated by Google) Nice museum with beautiful treasures from Egypt! There are even real mummies (take a look). Everything was great in this museum except that in the Egypt section there is a young lady from the friends lottery with a loud voice and often loudly on the phone with acquaintances of her or recruiting people. This really is very annoying as you expect peace and quiet in that room! They'd better put her in the arrival hall where you also buy the tickets so that it doesn't disturb during the museum visit! That's why this museum doesn't get 5 stars from me.

Now also open on Mondays and because of the pre-booking of tickets per time blocks, there is enough peace and space to view the collections.

(Translated by Google) Wonderful museum. Every year that I visit again, my heart beats faster with all that beauty that is so old, but in beautiful condition. Truly a feast for the eyes. The beautiful, very colorful glassware from Roman times also appealed to me. Various techniques of glass art already existed then. How special that the craftsmanship was already so extensive. (Original) Prachtig museum.

A bit far from Amsterdam, need to drive or catch one of the buses to get here. It's a technology museum. Worth a visit to see the history of Holland, but the castle like appearance of the building provides a picturesque photographic opportunities here. There's even a water canal whereby boats go pass at times. Also good for photoshoot. There's a garden at the lower area to view the beautiful scenery.

Very interesting museum. You'll learn how the Dutch pumped dry a huge inner sea in the 1800's and reclaimed a vast area of land. The old machinery is demonstrated for visitors by the very helpful museum guides and it's very impressive to see it all come to life. Amazing to realize that Amsterdam a.o. towns would've vanished completely if it hadn't been for steam pumping stations such as these. The museum is OPEN by the way, despite maps saying it's temporarily closed. You do need to reserve.
