Located in a former palace in a leafy part of Den Haag, this museum is dedicated to the works of imaginative artist M C Escher. One of the best art museums in The Netherlands. It is quirky and cool. It costs 11€ to get inside. Bags must be left in the lockers at the basement. There is a cafe in the basement too, and clean toilets. There is an ongoing show by Andy Warhol too. There are some interactive installations on different floors as well. We had no idea who Escher was before visiting the museum. But were pretty happy that we visited. Highly recommend to everyone planning to visit the Hague. Do drop in. It's small but interesting.

Amazing museum, the building was once a Palace now serving as an exhibition for Escher's amazing art works. The setting and lighting of the museum is amazing just as the artworks. Do not forget to go all the way up to see the interactive floor too! The entrance fee is 11 euros for adults, students and children have a lower price. The staff is welcoming and nice too. It was an amazing experience. The museum is located in a 10-15 minute walk from the Den Haag Centraal Station, really easy walk. Museum has a central location. Ticket office closes at 16.30 so even though the museum is fairly small compared to others, better to enter beforehand. PS: you might get dizzy a little bit after visit due to all of the optical illusions.

Good museum showing the works of the incredible M.C. Escher. It's also a former royal palace. Good merchandise. I could not find any kind of ventilation, no ducts and no draught from windows. It smells bad inside. I would be amazed if the legal minimum ventilation is available here, and I would not be amazed if the air is terrible (CO2 ppm in the thousands). So go in at your own risk and/or wear a respirator mask.

The 2nd best museum in Den Haag, after Mauritshuis. I was familiar with Eschers's graphics, he was a genius of perspective and he is still fresh even now. There was also an Andy Warhol exhibit inside but was not so spectacular. All the chandeliers are customade and very interesting. We liked also the perspective picture that you can get at the end of tour trip, at the "sensorial" floor, last floor. Also the shop had interesting souvenirs to buy. One thing not so cool: some areas were in renovation and the light is not so good, lots of reflections in the pictures i took.

Escher's work is in no doubt impressive, but the ugly modern lights are a disgrace in this beautiful royal building. Bomb shaped light, anyone?

Loved this exhibition. Plenty to do and also partake in. Lockers downstairs to put away your bags. Park area outside often with a fair taking place. Nice vibe, lovely building and architecture. Little giftshop. Very chilled.

Even though there wasn’t a queue when we arrived I would still recommend buying tickets before hand as we were able to pretty much walk right in. There’s actually a lot to see in the museum and it provides an account of his history as well as other artists that have been influenced by his works. It took us about two hours to go through all the exhibits. We took our time take everything in so a speed run can be done in about an hour.

This museum hosts some great printwork pieces from Escher. 3-4 of them are especially amazing. The rest? It’s just “meh”. Museum card is not valid here and entrance fee is 12 eur. If you have one day for Den Haag and would like to visit a museum, go to Mauritshuis instead of Escher in Het Paleis.

Beautiful museum. I have been here a few times now and it stays interesting. His drawings are so puzzling and natural at the same time! The building itself is wonderfully done up as well. It is a great place for adults and children alike and there are a few interactive pieces at the top floor.

(Translated by Google) Top museum with a large collection of works by Escher and a lot of information about Escher's life and working method. Supplemented with temporary exhibitions by other artists, often with visual effects and illusions. The building is also very worthwhile. Furthermore, a nice museum shop where you can buy many Escher-like objects. Highly recommended. Dikke aanrader dus.

M.C. Escher Museum, master of perspective. Located in den Haag, Zuid Holland, Netherlands. A must see stop on any trip to the Netherlands. One of the great Dutch artists of all time. Many of his original works are housed here and you are able to get up close and personal with them. Also several photo opportunities to put yourself into some of his amazing artwork.

Great place to visit - fantastic exhibits in a beautiful building. In truth my wife is the Escher fan although I certainly appreciate his works. They do museums so well in the Netherlands and this is a first rate example. If you're in Den Haag, like art, and have some time, this place is worth a visit.

Interesting art exhibition place. Escher’s works are really interesting and educative. The place where the art is exposed is nice. The people who welcome you and guide you within the paleis are really nice, polite and friendly. I do recommend to visit it. You can have a nice experience there.

Very interesting museum! It has three floors that walk you through the different stages of MC Escher's life and artistic works. All descriptions are available in English and Dutch. There are also a couple of rooms with movies and interactive installations. Additionally, there is a shop on the first floor with souvenirs such as cards, posters, notebooks, etc. There is also locker space for your bags and hangers for coats/ jackets. The only thing that might be an issue is that this museum does not take the museum card, however, the tickets are not expensive (I believe around 10-11 euros per person). You can buy them online or at the location.

3-story museum dedicated to Maurits Cornelis Escher. Housed in the extravagant residence of Queen Emma. Enjoy the chandeliers, hallways, curtains as you browse Escher’s wood prints. See his famous works such as Day and Night, Outer World, and Drawing Hands. The top floor contains optical illusions, including a €5/photo distorted room. Spend 1-2 hours here.

Escher's wonderful work in a historical setting, so it is definitely worth checking out! It is rather small and the place is kinda squeeky so advise to go early so it won't be too busy and cramped up together. Also, get the tickets online in advance, you just need to show the QR code at reception 👍🏼

There’s so much to see here and learn! It was almost overwhelming. Don’t miss the rooms with videos. I had read to allow a year, but I would suggest two hours. There’s an elevator. Lockers and bathrooms in the basement.

Great museum tracing the life of the artist Escher. The works are exhibited in a magnificent setting, former palace of Dutch royalty, each room allows us to feel in a gallery.

Museum where the works of Escher are displayed. There are a lot of metamorphic tiling art, which is quite interesting as it is different than your average art museum. The place was a former palace used by royalty. The museum is quite small and you still need to enter the queue to validate your tickets even if you have bought your tickets online.

This is one of the best museums I have ever been to. There is an abundance of information on the life of MC Escher and his teacher Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. This museum tells a beautiful and heartbreaking story of mentorship and life. I highly recommend this museum. The staff are also incredibly kind and helpful.

For someone generally grounded in the empirical world of sciences, the introduction to Escher's work was refreshingly diverse. He has a unique ability to engage minds that primarily lean toward logic. He turns mathematical concepts, such as tessellation, infinity, symmetry, and hyperbolic geometry, into a visual narrative that can be appreciated beyond scientific discourse. His technique is consistently thoughtful and precise; each piece displays an intricate, impossible reality depicting paradoxical spaces and infinite loops, pushing the boundaries of the viewer's understanding of the interplay of space, shape, and form.

Wonderful exhibit in the Escher year - the works of this genius Dutch artist cannot be described. You must see them yourself! Also, the Paleis is a great architectural piece, Queen Anne's winter residence and a work of art in itself! Not to be missed!

Great museum to go with children. They have a scavenger hunt for kids, which makes it interesting for them to discover some nice facts. The top floor was the most interesting for my son. There, they have the photo booth and some nice things to try out, like designing a pattern, using a glass to reflect light of shapes and some other interesting stuff.

Definitely another museum on the list of 'must see' they have a really great audio guidebook for Esther's artwork and the building it is located in. I found both fascinating and switched between the two audio guidebooks as I moved through each room. So be sure to bring along your own headphones and be prepared to be inspired. It's still worth five stars even though I was there on a Friday with multiple noisy school groups around.

It's awesome to see the artworks in person. The descriptions about Escher's themes and inspiration were well written. The former-palace setting adds another dimension to the visit, as do the chandeliers.

Perfect Afternoon; A stroll on the Lange Voorhout, a visit of my favorite ´little' museum in The Hague, and closing with some boutique shopping and drinks at the Denneweg. Besides the well known works of Escher such as the Metamorphosis series, there is an extensive collection of his other works as well. The palace itself is a tour on it's own, and thoughout the museum there is a superbe ongoing exposition of the (weird &) wonderful chandeliers of Hans van Bentem. *The museum is well adapted to Covid measurements*

Fantastic museum of mind bending art! Remember to look at the building as well as its history and decorations can easily be outshined by Eschers impossible geometry!

The collection is really really great and should not be missed. However, apparently Chinese vloggers are more important than paying average Joe’s. We had to move out of the way and listen to a loud museum person and translator. Oh, and apparently for them the 1,5 meter does not count...

Great museum. The art is beautiful and intriguing. The later art of escher is very interesting and makes you question your perspective. The museum is also a great location. The house itself is beautiful. It has 3 levels of the art. The last floor has interactive features. You can take pictures and experience the perspectives of eschers art yourself. The museum was recommended to us by some friends and it was definitely worth it. We recommend it now as well.

If you like Escher you should go, especially if you happened to be in town. There are many of his prints and some biographical material - however I cannot give it five stars, because I found the staff unfriendly when I was there. The tickets were also expensive, though this is a problem with most of the museums in the Netherlands (especially if you are tourist from a poorer country - If I don't remember badly the ticket was about 20 euros)

  • 2/5 Kat C. 3 years ago on Google
Tragically underwhelming curation. If you're a fan of Escher, it might be worth the 10 euros. The palace is historical and interesting enough itself as well. However be prepared with your ticket. They do not email it to you, and the reception desk has no interaction with their ticket supplier. I did not download my ticket and paid twice. I emailed them for a refund of the first pair of tickets and never received a reply or a refund. Very unhelpful. Cold reception. Discordant aesthetic. If I had it to do over again, I would go somewhere else.

An interesting place with lots of artwork from M.C. Escher. The place itself was a place for William III and his princess Emma. The entrance costs 11 euros, which I think is slightly expensive, given the small-sized building. I liked the artworks, but then they became very repetitive. Especially that Escher was focusing on Infinity and Nature. Great place to visit overall, but I think the tickets shouldn't be more than 6 Euros.

I wasn’t very acquainted with Escher, to be honest, and this museum was a great immersion into his work. The collection is extensive (expect to spend 2 hours here to enjoy properly) and there’s a good audio guide you can download on the spot (there’s wifi available). They also an interactive section, and work from artists inspired by Escher. The contemporary lamps are very cool too👌 A must for art lovers!

Amazing exhibition of Escher’s works. You you like arts, graphics or math/geometry you definitely should visit this place. I liked that apart from the art there were descriptions of room of Het Paleis with short historical overview.

For 11€ visit two floors of mainly Escher lithographs and a third floor of op art from other people. Lighting is horribly done, reflecting off many of the works. The biographical elements are well done, as are the window shade notes about the palace. Good time filler, not a destination on its own.

What's not to like about Escher? This museum is jam packed with interesting aspects of his life and his works of art. There is an audio guide available online that you can access through your smartphone so don't forget to bring your headphones along. 3 floors of fascinating gems he created that puzzle the mind and require intense observation. Infinity and eternity are the main themes. Enjoy!

The Escher Paleis is in itself a beautiful building with an old interior that is also part of the museum tour. They explain a few techniques Escher used and then you have 2 floors of mesmerizing art where you could look at for hours i feel. At the end there is some modern art as well from younger artists who play with optic illusions! This musuem is also very nice for visiting with kids.

A big collection of Escher's work in a magnificent palace. The building and café were really interesting but it turned out to be less engaging to be looking at framed works by Escher with small text descriptions hung on wall after wall. It just became too repetitive. I was more intrigued when watching a YouTube video or learning about his works online. The most interesting part of this visit for me was the interactive display on the top floor where you can create your own impossible drawing.

What an amazing museum to visit. Small, simple, easy to follow, great guidance, friendly staff and amazing art work. One of the greatest painters in my opinion, paintings with expression and food for thought. The museum itself is a palace and this makes it even more extraordinary to visit. The price is €11,50 for adults and cheaper for youth and children. I would recommend to buy your tickets in advance as there may be a half hour of waiting line outside the museum.

Worth the price of admission - plus there are €2 discounts floating around at most hotels. Lots of info on Escher and his teacher, set in a beautiful, historic paleis. There’s information about each room along the tour, so it’s almost like two visits in one! Definitely take the time to appreciate the architecture of each room. Like most museums, there was plenty of free storage for your bags. The best and unexpected parts were: the interactive exhibits on the top floor and the art students providing live examples, with explanations of how Escher created his prints. Its through their kindness that we truly learned to appreciate just how complex his pieces were to carve and print (especially those 3 block prints). Thank you!

Great Expo of Maurits Cornelis Escher, totally stunning and a wonderful place to spend more than an hour. By the way the staff here is great, everybody is so kind and helpful, so that you could enjoy every second.

Great museum about Escher and other important artists of his time. Exposition of his famous art works together with some nice interactive installations. What I personally didn't understand was the fact that visitors would have to pay extra money to be allowed to take an additional picture in one of the installations with an illusion effect... I think that is far too much money... If the entrance fee was low okay, but in this case... Apart from that really nice museum with friendly and helpful stuff working there! There is free coffee ☕

Nice exhibition ! It's the perfect place to learn more about Escher's life and work. The pieces on display are quite diversified and span from his early to his late years. And every room includes just the right amount of explanations and context to appreciate what is to be seen, with many details and quotes from the artist.

Not long enough! This was a well-designed exhibit that was interesting and informative. The palace as a venue could be better because there were a lot of stairs and some were only one person wide so there was a bottle neck. There were fun displays and an opportunity to take an optical illusion photo. The artwork itself is so cool and detailed. I would recommend this experience to anyone visiting The Hague or even Amsterdam since it is a pretty easy train ride that you can do in a few hours.

Great visit, you can spend 2 hours or more in there easily. Each room is well presented and I found it clever to use more artists for the decor, like the chandeliers, in each room there is one with a different shape. I booked beforehand, but you could go and get the tickets at the desk with no issue. For kids there is a scavenger hunt activity, adults can go for it as well. It is available in English, Dutch, and I think in German.

Fantastic collection of artwork and really interesting to see the development of Escher's work, from his early life until his passing. Spending (half) an afternoon here is totally worth it! I was pleasantly surprised to see a drawing of Steve Carell walking/dancing. They didn't mention it anywhere in the museum, but Escher must have been a big fan!

Life’s work of MC Escher very well curated exhibition with guided audio tour. Very fascinating to see his Lithography process explained & his art work with such a attention to detail. It was interesting to read about his life and places he lived which also inspired a lot of his work. The cycles of life , Metamorphosis, tessellations, some of his work is confusing and will make you think as viewer which was precisely this goal.

interesting museum, very nice and helpful staff - no crowds in November - a lot of people but you can spend enough time looking at interesting sculptures and works. Candelabras are especially beautiful 🤩 the museum is quite easy to navigate, we spent about 2 hours, it is worth visiting the restaurant as there are photographs there
