Wow. Amazing, unobstructed view on the city. You can observe such a contrast of land mass in front. On the left you can see the mountains. But to the right it’s as flat as it gets. Gate looks majestic with all the white marbles. Venetian lion can be seen on the gate reminding of the time when this region was under Venetian rule.

A must-visit place if you stop in Bergamo!!! This historical place will have you mesmerized with its beauty and simplicity. Whether you chose to take a bus, the Funiculare (EURO 1,30) or the stairs (scorlazzini) you are at the right place. At the very heart of it is Piazza Vecchia where you are surrounded by the stunning Palazzo della Ragione, Biblioteca Angelo Maj, Campanone and right next to it the beautiful Santa Maria Maggiore and the Duomo Sant Alessandro. With narrow cobbled streets, every turn you make is a hiden wonder to explore. The area is small and with walking shoes is much confortable to walk around. The restaurants are a bit pricey but you cannot put a price on the italian food and taste. A child-friendly area as there is a lot of space to run around. Beautiful by day and astonishing by night you can easily dive into a well-preserved historic site while enjoying the stunning view of Bergamo bassa. And dot't forget to see the solar clock under the Palazzo della Ragione. You will need to be walking almost on it to see it and it has a shape of a "long number 8" with zodiac signs all around. I have visited Citta Alta 3 times and I would recommend to visit it in the afternoon during spring and summer period.

One of the best symbols the city of Bergamo has, as it stands proud above the new city, and at night is lightened quite nice that it's details are clearly visible from great distance

It is a nice place to visit. We were here in winter and in the morning so there was not much to do but there is a nice view of the city and is quiet. I would like to just sit around. You can come by bus, even directly from the airport.

This is the first level on Cita Alta to observe the breathtaking view of the city… You can hike, take stairs, bus or funicular to reach here ..

This gate is in the end of the stairs that connects two parts of Bergamo the old historical part of the city with the new one. The view from here is breathtaking and you can see also the old Venetian walls of the city. I am happy that I visited Bergamo Alta in a sunny December day😊 so I could enjoy the outdoor historical landmarks.

Good. From there turn left following the fortifications untill you reach the next exit by following the flow of people. When you pass this other exit on your right there will be a furniculae to go up. Pay 1.50 and be happy up there for 1 hour. Then come back. Best route!

Landmark of Citta Alta Bergamo, easy access with funicular railway or city bus. Scenic view of whole Citta Bassa. It is one of the four gates on the Venetian walls of the ancient city and a must-see during your trip.

It is a historical place to visit on hill top having a splendid cathedral and a few other historical places. It is preferable to use the tram to go to the hill top. You can come down walking on the ramp and enjoying the scenic city view.

The city wall arround "high town" of Bergamo offers a good walk arround with a fantastic view both overlooking "low town" and... but not least... the fantastic buildings of high town

Porta San Giacomo is one of the medieval city gates that allows access to Bergamo Alta, Bergamo's upper town. Constructed in local white stone, it is a huge arched portal, not really attractive but historically important for quite a number of reasons. Right in front of the gateway, the spacious clearance (actually a bridge that connects Bergamo Alta with Bergamo Bassa) offers excellent views over the lower town. From here, one can walk down to the lower town in about 10 minutes via a long picturesque flight of old cobbled steps built amidst old trees and thick green foliage. Going up is a hard task to achieve and not recommended but going down is easy and should be on your itinerary when visiting Bergamo.

Technically it’s a huge marble door with a nice road winding towards the old city. But that’s not the whole story here: you actually feel the thousands of ancient merchants, peasants, knights that walked on that cobblestone ramp, against those historical walls. It’s a door through history. And if you are not interested in history, it’s a still a very nice walk.
